Darwin is open source, Swift is open source, they’re creating open standards with many companies for passkeys, home automation and other technologies…

I wonder if they charge shipping as well?

I get what y’all are saying about the price. That’s more for the Pro, they will definitely have a cheaper version down the road. As for the glasses thing, if you really think about it, that’s a whole different product that will provide limited info on a screen like Google glass and that’s it. You would never do spacial computing and have the immersion of the set they showed off. It would basically be your Apple Watch on your face. If Apple ever came out with that, it would be a cousin device to the AVP. The AVP has the potential to replace your Home Theater, computer and iPad. Glasses would replace your watch at best lol!

Good points, I think the problem with the idea that is replaces theatre, computer, and iPad is that it only replaces it for one person. With two or more people in a household this gets problematic especially at $3500 a pop.

I think the glasses could replace the iPhone.

Did Apple just fix VR. No. What Apple did was show us the future of computing. This is not another Quest Pro, this is a Macintosh Pro headset.

I think Apple is trying to look past the smart phone. They are trying to figure out what that next big thing can/should be. I mean if you think about it, smart phones have reached a such level of maturity, companies have realized that a new, shiny rounded rectangle just isn't all that exciting any longer.
Companies like Motorola and Samsung, etc. have begun going back to the flip phone form factor now. While Apple's tech is top in this AR space, I'll be ultimately impressed once the technology has reached a state such that eye glasses without the huge battery in your back pocket provide these capabilities. That means that battery technology and computing technology will need to be much, much smaller, more capable and use far less battery power.
We're not there yet, but seeing as how this is Apple, they'll likely sell this thing to a lot of Apple fans. Unfortunately, going with this means total Apple lock-in because you have to have an iPhone to do the initial scans of your face, thus leaving Android users out of the running.
A question I have is when does Linux begin to play a role in this type of technology (Extended Reality)?

You might be right. It's a great question with Linux getting into the equation. There are a lot of headsets that support Linux but can't do the things this headset can.
