    I like your videos, I've watched several of them now. I do a lot of field work at gas stations as part of my job. You are so right about situational awareness, it is truly the core aspect of job safety for me. It's not just about spotting the bad guy before he/she striks, its also about minding the traffic flow through the parking lot, so I can set up my cones and barricades and hopefully not get creamed by a car while doing my job.
    Being aware of your surroundings is king when it comes to personal safety.

    I practice Kali Silat. I love the sinawali and how the principles can be used for open hand techniques also.

    Blisters, aches, pains, bruises, broken bones, and other injuries are trophies for excellent work, excellent training!
    The mind and body get accustomed to those injuries so each injury becomes less and less bothersome.
    The mind learns quite quickly, "oh, I got hit," and continues the workout of fight.
    My Sifu used to tell us to come work out even if we are in a cast, so I did. He said that when one part of the body is weakened the part that functions well and the mind becomes stronger so you can fight even if you happen to get hurt. In the military we say, "never give up!"

      I hope you guys went really easy on the injured. You can develop nasty health conditions like myositis ossificans or stress fractures when too much activity is put on current injuries

      @@jaredevans8263 My Sima (Chinese for woman teacher) told us that we study Five Family Kung Fu. She said we are family and family takes care of each other. She said that if we beat the crap out of each we would find ourselves with no one to train with.
      A rule in my school was to inform your training that night of any injuries or pains you have so as not to prolong healing. My Sifu and Sima told us we can develop speed and power on the bag, not on each other. However, if we get inadvertently hurt try to continue working out, just go easy.
      There were injuries that did present a risk of antagonizing the injury so we give up for the night and even for days or however long we deem necessary. Sifu and Sima will advise to take a break if things seem sketchy.
      If I THINK I feel good enough to get back to working out and feel the pain I back off. We do have to use our own sense when it comes to injuries and healing.
      Train, but be wise. Be safe...

    You’re absolutely right about the teenage gang thing. One night while going to work I was confronted in the subway by these jokers looking to have a good time at my expense. The kid ran up on me first immediately regret it as I pummeled his body with a series of punches and techniques from the Filipino martial arts. I hit this kid so hard and fast he jumped back terrified thinking that I had shot and move the gun! Throughout the whole beat down none of his friends jumped in like I was expecting! The fight ended when the cops rolled in on a train and I got on and went to work. I believe it was because I showed strength stood up hurt this guyThat caused his buddies not to want to get involved they weren’t expecting what I had prepared

    Hi Im just starting to learn to use the sticks find your videos great to watch and learn from, Ive been learning the nunchaku as well. Ive noticed the sticks you are using in this video are of the same style as some of your nunchaku and was wondering if you could tell me where I could perchase of a set of each. I live in the UK.

    Sir.
    Can you do a session on the different sinawalis.
    You know one session for one only and show how to do it step by step slowly. Sometimes it's kind of hard to follow when you go fast. At least for me. That way I can collect all of them and when I get good on one I can go to the next one. And so one.

    Kali stick fighting has been my dream for some time now, but for reasons unknown even for me I haven’t looked into it yet and got stuck with bokken. Finally I have an occasion to buy kali sticks and start exercising with them but I have a question: there are two lengths available 60 and 66 cm. How to evaluate which would be best for me (173 cm)?

      Longer. The shorter sticks are generally for females (who are often not as tall) and children. You are average height and you want the longer reach of the longer stick and won’t have any trouble handling it.

      Yes! That’s where I got them. I train with the clubs twice a week for shoulders and grips. The Indian Swinging Clubs healed my shoulders years ago and I keep training with them to stay healthy and strong. Do you train with them too?

    Hey Matt, I always enjoy your videos, thanks very much. I've been looking for a Dojo up here in Canada like yours. My last one was very similar, and the Sensi great, we all called him Boss after some Bruce lee movie as he was Chinese, teaching Japanese Shotokan. I have a quick question for you, I found a local dojo, the only one which would return my call as I have all sorts of physical disabilities, they don't bother me and I'm happy to sign the waiver! At first, all sounded great he wasn't into strict form, combat-oriented, so I went along to what I was led to believe was a class, a bit of research, soon revealed this was a very scripted demonstration, with an assistant move for move, by a Master in his style. Now I've asked to see a second lesson, and this is the first dojo I've attended where watching one or two lessons is a problem, is now a nogo. Now He wants a void cheque, I want to pay cash in advance instead, and no checking out an actual lesson, I smell something off I'm not inexperienced, I want to spar with some hands-on unpredictability, as I find that's where I learn the most, Kata is a waste of time for me, especially with the short term memory loss I now have, I'm also not a kid but a senior citizen who wants to stay safe now they've put a bunch of half-way houses and Drug rehab joints (Methodone) facilities in our area. I think this guy may be great at what he does, but I"m not interested in his style? just common sense application and I don't want to get sucked onto x amount of lessons I can't afford. Sorry, I need a sounding board. anyone feel free to answer, please.

      I’m very familiar with that way of selling martial arts classes. It annoys me too. I never believed that if you had to use “sales techniques” to sign someone onto a long term contract, then you start to rely on selling more than teaching. As a martial artist, that’s crap. I would rather spend all my time trying to get better at being a martial artist and instructor than being a great salesman. Nothing against great salesmen, I respect them a lot. I just don’t want to learn martial arts from them. It sounds like this school doesn’t offer what you want anyway. Go with your gut.

      Thank you for the info, much appreciated. I would like to add that you need hand movement, since you probably don't have the sticks with you when you are in the street. You grab what you can on street fight and you can use empty hands if you don't have nothing, the movement it's basically the same in Kali, I think.
