yes kali or Arnis are good way of self defense when i was younger I learn Arnis because it waS part of physical education here in Philippines back when i was in the elememtary and high school beside learning karate but i was more interested in completing my education and build a career i stop to practice it .but I know how to used the stick for fighting and i not a fighter i am just a regular guy. that works 8 hours day but i have retired at 60 because i have hypertension and diabetes i take maintainces medicine.

Hi Matt, thanks for sharing really good info, especially reemphasizing how self defense is the product of training for survival. As you learned in the Marine Corp, as i did on the PD, reaction to the threat has to be instinctive. How tunnel vision can happen, when the adrenaline dump occurs feeding the fight or flight response, when facing one or more aggressors. As you said when realizing the necessity for self defense, a person has to enter the situation with the mind set: "It's time to go to work!" Thanks again for sharing your expertise. Stay safe. Doug

Just got my Escrima sticks from Kombativ, Those warm up exercises are a lot harder than they look, I never realized how stiff my wrists were and I had no idea that I had absolutely no coordination 😆...But I'm going to keep.it up till I get it right..Thanks for the videos, They are very inspirational and very educational.

I like this channel, I am lacking in the study of weapons. Now I can start to fix that.

I'm enjoying your videos. I like self defence but sport not so much eg was watching 80's karate vs now it's so different

I like the 2-hand bayonet posture better as a "ready position" than the 1-hand fencing posture.
If the guy rushes at me (and he kind of has to, since if he just creeps in then I'll just step away), then I want that 2-hand power ready to stop his momentum.
Holding the stick out forward looks too easy for him to grab it or swat it off line before attacking. It'd be different if it had a cutting edge on it.
From the bayonet position, the lead hand can snap out a quick 1-hand hit if needed, and the rear hand can deliver a 1-hand thrust, so you don't lose anything. I think you're also better positioned to fend off an additional attack from a different direction.

I firmly agree. As soon as I saw him trying to reason this I immediately thought that the sticks instantly became way easier to grapple or hit away allowing for easier attack. Keeping them close gives you a better chance at striking first (should they charge to attack).

Hey Matt, what brand medicine ball do you recommend? I got a cheap one on amazon but it ended up being garbage.

Hello Matt , I'm new to the channel and have a question. I'm making my own self defense stick and was wanting to know if putting a lanyard on one end is a good idea. Say for instance the stick can't be pulled out of your hand by the assailant. I'm making the shorter stick (12") I forgot the name of it. I'm a 60 year old man who is disabled and have decided against a gun for self defense because of all the reasons using a gun can backfire on you even if you are 100% right in using it to defend yourself. I've always been interested in Martial Arts so this has really got my attention.

The Koreans call it the Dan bong and it is a great idea! Very powerful for self defense.
