on the surface yes, if u look further into studies u very quickly realise that being anti UBI is just plain silly. Of course UBI isn't UBI, there are many forms, but the ones who get the most traction, especially yang's form of UBI has overwhelming support from professional economists. The only downside to it, is that it would accelerate the economy so freaking much that handling stuff like global warming and such would just become harder.

Talking fast certainly allows him to slip false statements in almost unnoticed. Check 11:06 on the video. The pilot basic income program in Ontario was not cancelled because it was incentivizing people to not work. On the contrary, it was cancelled before any data at all could be obtained. There is presently a class action lawsuit against him for the damage this caused to so many people who had done things such as moving into adequate house, purchasing a vehicle so they could get a job, or going back to school.

We should all want better for this country but I see so many people who have good jobs and look down on people who are stuck in the aforementioned situations. People don’t care about issues, most of the time, unless it effects them directly. And when you have politicians who make more in a month than some of us make in a year making all the decisions then it leaves little hope for change at all. For every CEO who is buying their third yacht and building there fifth vacation home, there are thousands of employees working for them who are often forced to live off the bare minimum. Skipping meals just to make rent. Never getting to go out and do anything fun because it’s just not in the budget. We need a check on greed, yet most argue freedom. After explaining the intricacies of AI in the market place, Yang closes with “... so it’s very very difficult to stop this process. We have to, instead, think about how we can make Americans prosperous through this time. The goal should not be to save jobs; the goal should be to make our lives better.” - BOOM Andrew fuckin Yang, ladies and gentlemen.
The question is a perfect example and the result of the mainstream current human psychological attitude toward human life in general. Most humans are psychologically hung up on the idea that humans need to work to have purpose in life (maybe because we’ve always had to, maybe because they think it’s the only way to provide purpose for humans, or maybe because they haven’t thought about it at all.)
Yang busts up that idea in one fuckin sentence. *“THE GOAL SHOULD NOT BE TO SAVE JOBS; THE GOAL SHOULD BE TO MAKE OUR LIVES BETTER.”* This is the example of what the human psychological attitude towards life should be even without the threat of AI taking most/all jobs. Andrew proves in one sentence that he has broken through this psychological hang up that we need to impede the progress of AI for the sake of keeping humans working. Yang is completely on another level than the other presidential candidates and most humans in general.
*Side note- Just one statistic that really challenges the “work gives humans purpose in life” idea is that only 20 something % of Americans claim to like their jobs in the first place. It should be fairly easy to change the psychological attitude of Americans on this topic but it most likely won’t be. Philosophers and economists were talking about this seriously, in great-depth back in the 60s (and I’m sure even before that).
Check out the UA-cam link below for an example. Watts describing exactly the direction our economy should move in. Here we are 50-60 years later and barely talking about it. It’s a 15 min audio that everyone should listen to. He starts with talking about the concept of money but gets into introducing automation into the labor force, a UBI, changing the psychological attitudes of humans, etc.

I would like to see what you proposed though, a UBI and everything you earn on top is taxed at a flat 15% with no deductibles. That would give every adult enough to live, in fact multiple adults(or a family) can live together to pool their UBI. a UBI should not allow someone to live alone and have everything provided for them, you'll need to work hard for that. People need to feel productive and feel like they are useful and providing value to society which will be increasingly difficult with automation and AI.

I agree. There are four major points in the video, and they all seem to agree with them.
      1. Money and purpose are essential for a happy life.
      2. If people become truly unemployable, they will lack both.
      2. Governmental UBI seems necessary in that case to provide the money.
      4. It will be hard to find a solution that provides the purpose.
The only major disagreement comes with the premise in 2. Shapiro believes there will be few people that'll be truly unemployable, while Musk and Yang think it will be a bigger issue.
Personally, I would agree with Musk and Yang that this industrial revolution will be categorically different than the previous three. Once AI and robots become good enough, it will make less and less sense to employ humans in *any* field. The new fields of employment in the past were always based on the truth that humans had the edge over technology in *some* area. Maybe we will find a field of work that humans will inherently do better than AI or robots, but the number of fields we can "escape" to is shrinking drastiscally.

    • @Epyriel

But sometimes it takes money to start your life; sometimes it takes the money to find your purpose.
UBI has a good chance to provide that. People in UBI experiments often seek out higher education to improve their life, to get out of their terrible job and find meaningful employment.
Also Peterson’s point about drug use is misleading; a false analogy to UBI. UBI studies have shown that the vast majority of the time drug use and drinking is reduced substantially through the introduction of UBI. The reason why some people might buy drugs as soon as they get a bit of money is because they don’t feel they can do anything about their situation so they just sort of give up. This might explain why with a sustained UBI so many people stop abusing drug since they now feel they have been given a chance.

In a broader context, a job is your contribution to your fellow man. Why should someone else truck the food in to the store? Run the store? Clean the store? Stock the store? It is always based on exchange and value of contribution. I drive a dozer, so someone else can dig dirt, so someone else can haul it, so someone else can refine it, so someone else can transport the refined fuels, so someone else can sell it, so someone else can have fuel for their car, so they can then get to work to produce food, so someone else can process it, so someone else can transport it, so someone else can cook it, so I can go and eat it and go back to work.

If your job, and millions of others, can be done better via automation, then aren't you being denied the ability to contribute as you once were? Sure some can be retrained but the knowledge we have on distribution of intelligence strongly indicates the majority will struggle. If UBI allows these people to maintain a healthy life then that is all that we would require right? Though we have yet to see the long term effects on the economy, it was interesting to see what people did with that money. I actually spent slightly more than average, but that was mostly due to having more free time, and I was super productive during lockdown, since I didn't have to worry about paying my bills and could do whatever I wanted. On the other hand, I have friends who blew all their money and wasted their time when off work, so it's really hard to say if UBI is universally good or bad.

If their response is to sit at a beach and sip martini, then you know their only sole purpose in life up to now has been derived from their jobs.
A more reasoning base approach is to first define what the meaning of life actually is. If we are to define meaning of life as the duties and responsibilities that one carries, then it is easy to see how job plays a role in that meaning. The meaning in people's lives that Elon Musk mentioned could be derived from helping others. Mother Teresa never turned a wrench or a hammer on an assembly line, yet I think her life had wonderfully significant meaning. There will always be people who need our help, the sick, the addicted, the emotionally, or spiritually drained. There could be meaning in caring for these.
There could be meaning in simply being the best of possible parents to our children. Programs could be started that would encourage and teach parents themselves to become more active tutors, counselors, and mentors in their own children's lives. The exploration of arts and philosophy should not be discounted either. If you free up people from thinking about their own predicaments, by creating an environment of abundance, unlimited is the potential return on that investment. It is difficult at best for creativity to flourish in the surroundings of scarcity.

Joe, if you ever read comments, I can explain what’s happening macro-economically with what Ben was getting at @ 17:45
The labor pool for tech has had constant growth because of the concentration of VC, institutional, and public markets buying companies at 20x early on - that has started to slow. The influx of labor dollars available in the tech sphere is higher because of this. It is only bolstered by the low overhead costs of many of the revenue schemes. As long as the entry costs stay cheap and overhead stays low (barring regulation) I don’t think it will change for a long time. Meaning our economy will move to digital forms of goods as much as they can transfer, I don’t think this leaves any people out of work but maybe you think different?

Here are the things that are never addressed properly by anyone: If UBI is the solution to people who are losing jobs and are not likely to be able to acquire the skills for a new one, how is $12,000 a year supposed to "solve" that problem? I can't live on that amount of money, and I don't even have a wife and kids to support. The other thing is where does the money come from? Andrew Yang talks about how the federal budget is about $4 trillion dollars now, but how much of that is deficit spending? And keep in mind that the truckers, etc. who will lose their jobs will also not be paying income taxes anymore, so there will be even less revenue coming in. His false analogy about Alaska involves selling a valuable commodity (oil) and giving the proceeds to the people. We don't have that type of commodity in a lot of other states, and where such commodities exist, the commodity is owned privately and so too are the profits.
I hope Ben Shapiro is right about new jobs being created as old jobs are eliminated as in the past, but what was also true in the past is that people who were middle-aged and older were not able to adapt to the new jobs and suffered in poverty. Also, in the past it was mostly manual labor jobs that were eliminated by automation, whereas now it will even eliminate some jobs that required a lot of education. They mention radiologists for example. Some say that software will replace investment bankers in terms of deciding the best way to invest your money. Even some of the simpler coding jobs will be handled by AI. How long will it be before AI can take over even complex coding? To say that new jobs we haven't even thought of yet will appear in the economy because they always have in the past is a bit naive. Just because something worked out in the past doesn't mean it will in the future.

    • @Flip-3206
      @Flip-3206 3 роки тому

@J Watson That's just it, though. The way Andrew Yang talks about it, it's NOT a short term cushion until people find something else to do. He's clearly saying that there won't be enough jobs to replace the ones that are lost, and that the jobs that aren't taken over by AI are not likely to be ones that the people losing truck driving jobs (for example) will be able to adapt to. You can argue about whether or not he's right about that, but that is the premise from which he is proceeding. That's why I don't understand why he thinks $1000 a month will be enough.
Also, paying for UBI with a 25% tax on ALL incomes is going to push more lower income people into poverty. People barely getting by won't be able to make the rent and you'll just create more homeless people.

People have predicted “no more jobs” so many times historically that I just don’t believe it will happen UNTIL we have prevalent cheap energy. But, I don’t think it is a good thing. People need to work, it is a good thing to feel useful and valuable. If the economy values the work a person does then it has value. But placing an artificial value on a job such as a national minimum income is nonsensical. Hear Andrew Yang “admit” that government retraining programs are, at best 15% successful is a real slap in the face. Businesses should train people to do the jobs THEY need to have done because they need them. That way they have skin in the game.

Peterson always suprises me, wonderful answer. What Shapiro says is not that true, it had never happened so fast that change, so it´s true there will be many, many people who can´t keep up. Also, giving a free salary has it´s ups and downs: some people will do nothing, but most people can create companies because they won´t be as scare to have nothing, if they have a salary no matter what, they can have more risks.
