      UBI will just be used to keep those who will lose their jobs to automation alive, while they still work the same hours at jobs that pay pennies. It's a way to keep the revolt against this socio-economic structure at bay.

    • @jordannedkov
      @jordannedkov 4 роки тому +27

      @ForrestSCS it's not the same. There is no negative connotation with UBI, unlike welfare. How's taking care of your primal needs not liberating you by giving you the hours and resources to explore whatever, to find meaning? Unless you're of the Jordan Peterson's school of thought where meaning can only be derived through suffering. Which even if that's the case i don't see how UBI will get in the way of that

      In my experience, how people think about work is class related. People from a working class background, like my grandparents, believe in honest hard work. They believe that if you work hard at your job then your career will take care of itself. By contrast middle class people realise that your job and your career are two different things. Successful career progression is more about who you know, applying for opportunities, and talking yourself up.

      @@fladave99 Venezuela's problems can be traced to corruption, and incompetent management of resources. You do realise that V has the largest oil reserves in the world?
      I've lived in Bahrain, and visited UAE many times. I can assure you that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and other middle eastern countries give generous hand outs to their citizens to keep them quiet so they don't whine about the Royal families who control everything. These monarchies don't call it UBI but the hand outs are effectively UBI. Yet, they haven't become venezuela. do you ever wonder why? Perhaps it has something to do with better money management though they too will face issues in the future.
      As for america, Goodness! You can raise taxes and cut military spending for a start. Then there is VAT. You can make VAT less regressive by exempting food and medicines. When you roll the existing monies paid for existing social welfare programmes into increase revenues, I think you will find enough money.
      People mention inflation. And it’s possible inflation could happen. But I think that we will be living in a deflationary economic environment for a while longer yet. Why? Because the cost of production will keep coming down. Why do for profit organisations use Robots, AI and other technology? Because Robots, AI and technology DRIVE DOWN COSTS of production. An AI Robot can make cars cheaper than human beings. That’s why companies do it. So, though I agree we should keep an eye open for inflation - always, I think the risk is deflation right now.
      Anyway, here's the thing. If you disagree with Yang, what's your solution to the widening income and wealth gap? What's your solution when the IOT, robots and AI can do the work of 10 humans with only 1 engineer taking care of them? What are you going to do when 60% of working age adults stop looking for a job and so don't get counted in the employment statistics? But they aren’t earning money either?
      Any suggestions?

    I don't find the "what about meaning and purpose" argument very persuasive. Most of the "jobs" out there are not providing meaning and purpose...they are a means to an end.
    I know many people including people where I work that just show up for a paycheck, they could care less about the actual job and they find meaning and purpose outside of work.
    If flipping burgers and mopping floors, etc. is the best we can do at providing opportunities for activity that truly does provide meaning and purpose, than that is just sad and we are not using our imaginations.
    I find this argument really only coming from those with college degrees and actual careers where they do find meaning and purpose in what they do, and they seem to want to project that onto the masses.
    But that is not the majority of people.
    We can do better.

    • @B20C0
      @B20C0 4 роки тому +54

      The point is, that UBI enables those people, it doesn't force them. E.g. in many countries around the world (the USA being a prime example) education is not free, but even if the education is free, people from poor families still have to work instead of focusing on their education 100%, which in turn makes most (but not all) achieve less.
      UBI enables those people to achieve educational goals they wouldn't otherwise be able to and in turn take better earning jobs with higher tax rates (to repay the system) and the ability to consume more.
      But even if they just sit on their asses doing nothing (which most people wouldn't do) and just buying random stuff with their UBI and paying their rent they are still more valuable than if they were just poor.
      In fact, even from a strictly capitalistic standpoint UBI makes a lot of sense, because the income gap increasing is a HUGE problem. It's leads to social unrest and to diminishing consumption which in turn hinders innovation.
      Essentially what you want to achieve is a society where every participant is able to consume produced goods while still keeping competition and reward innovation, hard work and a good education.

    This is a good video. I have been a supporter of the UBI idea for a couple years now. Primarily because I am 53 years old and have served in the military, have worked over 30 years of my lifetime mostly in construction but also have had to jump from job to job due to circumstance (like closings and health issues, only been fired from one job and have had over 20 "jobs"). I am physically damaged from accidents both at play and work and have a hard time finding work now because I have difficulty with many of the basic lifting tasks required by most "jobs". I do odd jobs for some cash and live with others helping the household to "earn my keep" (effectively a homeless vet). I am not allowed disability, cannot get the healthcare I need, and might have been looking forward to getting social security in 7 years but now it looks like I would have to live another 17 years to "retire." So yeah UBI would allow me to be "lazy". Sorry but I think I have earned the right to be lazy now by being a productive citizen for over a "lifetime". Yet what will most likely happen is when my situation changes again I will be homeless and another one of those that other people point at for being lazy and not wanting to work even though it appears I "could". With UBI security the weight of my current grim looking future would be lifted and I see the potential to pursue other goals like maybe teaching, or entertainment of some sort here on Utube. Myself I do not care if some people will sit around in their underwear shooting up heroin if they get a UBI. Most likely with UBI resources they won't last very long and by dying sooner will not burden society nearly as much. People need to quit evaluating things based on what has always worked in the past. As civilization progresses we need to change, adapt, and overcome. Better to do so by examining our future needs as a society than try to work it out after the riots destroy the foundations we have built.

      With the basics covered a lot of stress and fear is eliminated. That basic concept will free people to explore their ideas and passions.
      Kind of like having a safety net under you while learning gymnastics or trapeze. Remove the fear of death or injury and you can soar high above the ground. People would be free to pursue their dreams. Think of a young person who wants to be an actor. If their basics are covered they’re free to take acting classes and participate in local theatre to gain experience.

    For the "life purpose" dilemma I think it's interesting to look at retirees.
    Retirees go from a life with purpose, i.e. their career or job, to having no prescribed purpose. Yet most find fulfillment through their families & hobbies & pastimes, or through voluntary or community work.
    Those that have none of these usually wither & perish.

      Work weeks should be reduced to 10 hours per week per individual. That would make people more happy. The ones who do not work would love to work. The reason they dont work is because they are either unable physically to do 40 hours per week or because most jobs are built around a system. The people who work 40 hours or more per week are breaking down to the physical demands. Full Benefits are only given to the people who work a full 40 hours. I know alot of people on disability that would love to work a few hours per week but the job market is not able to help them. Their Disability benefits would be cut if they make more than 800 per month. Who could live off 800 per month to be honest? Many on disability are intelligent but not physically able to do a full week. Shorten work weeks and the unemployment numbers would be near zero and everyone would be happy to have a job. Why do humans need to spend all their waking hours doing a job yet some never get out of bed or leave their homes during the day because they are unable to find work due to many reasons. The more people that go back into the work force doing 10 hours per week would create jobs for everyone.

      Yeah everyone would have jobs that pay 1/4 of what these jobs used to pay. That's not a solution.
      Minimum wage and other job related policies are the reason people don't want (or even can't) hire people that produce less. The higher the minimum wage less and less youngsters get to work, the same goes for other people that produce less because of other reasons than inexperience. How can a business owner pay 100$ for 10h when X person produces less than the standard? If he could pay whatever he thought it was worth less people would be unemployed, thus reducing the weight on welfare.
      What's better? Working and receiving 50$ for 10h OR not having a job and depending on the govt money?

    • @piyushvaidya5086
      @piyushvaidya5086 4 роки тому +23

      Sorry. But I believe human behaviour is guided by efficiency and economics aka feasibility. Now a basic phenomenon of economics is the demand supply curve. As long as the supply for demand of low skilled jobs will be much larger than the demand itself, those jobs will be low wage. And that goes for every form of job. 30 years ago, having the knowledge of computers was very much valued, and they got much more pay over traditional older job doers. Today, just after 30 years, every kid holds a more powered computer in his hand and knows to effectively use it. So today, knowing computers is the basis of medium skilled jobs, not an exception. second, jobs are payed by their worth in the company, if the work u do in the company that contributes only 0.001% in the value of the company's income, how & why do u expect it to pay more than what ur work contributes. Are u willing to pay 50$ for a 30$ pizza even if it's ur most favourite food?no. Then why do u expect the pizza delivery guy to get 10$ rather than his valued 7$. U want people to be payed for their inability to learn & contribute as much as the world around him. U can help people who are disabled, mentally unstable or any other birth disability. But why would anyone even willingly help able handed sane people for their own created shortcomings? Especially in first world countries. But there is no discussion about UBI going on in developing & third world. It's going on in the first world, when many countries already have public education &/or healthcare. Even if it's not free, it is still very much accessible & with the help of ngos & scholarships, even affordable. Also, the justification u give for UBI is very much wrong, because even though someone's got to clean toilets, stock selves, pack Amazon orders, people do not get into those jobs thinking someones got to do menial jobs. People get into those jobs because, they are unable to learn how the world works, & therefore can't convert thing into anything of more value. We can even take a very millennial culture example like jay-z for this. He was from the shady parts of the city, was into drug selling for earning & lots of other problematic conditions. But he's almost a billionaire now. How is it that the rest of the people from his neighborhood or anyone such from first world, not be able to do such a thing,& taxpayers pay for their inability. Nice solution

      Piyush Vaidya your argument makes sense if all the profits weren’t going straight to the top. When you have execs making more in a year than their entire workforce then why can’t people say they deserve more for what they do? Work at the end of the day is work especially when it’s jobs that most people don’t want to do. And let’s not forget all the jobs that someone has to do that take years of training and money and education that don’t pay any more than a job with no education

    • @piyushvaidya5086
      @piyushvaidya5086 4 роки тому +8

      @@julian9231 if most don't want to do those jobs, such employees would have been hard to find. I think u mean to say, they would have preferred to do a better quality or better payed job, but don't have either the skill or will or resources to do it. and that is the case for pretty much 90% of employee workforce. And u say executives get payed alot like it's a bad thing. Executives are the core of the company, anyone can build a few goods, anyone can write a few lines of code & build a program, the value of a person is decided by what he controls, risks & maintains. Managing hundreds of employees, their demands, the shareholders demands for growth, the investment to growth ratio, the health of the product or service provided & continuous problems in achieving goals isnt an easy thing to do. That is why a CEO prefers to pay executives more, & not the employees, because even after incentives, gifts, benefits etc. the employee will still leave at his designated 7:30 pm off time. He won't care for doing an extra hour for the betterment of the company. Thats what executives do. They don't have time schedules. They have targets, goals & possibilities in mind. The lower or higher demand of the product doesn't harm the employee nor does he care(unless theres a lot of loss or the company shuts down), the people at the top own the shares, & it is their pockets which hurt the most, when the company faces losses & shares fall, the employee still gets his salary, his timely leave, his insurance & parking benefits & what not. Of course there are many places where CEOs demand & get much more than should have been plausible. But then again, he is in a position to demand that high of a pay, & the shareholders value him at such level. Elon musk only gives tasks & sets goals & give it to his executive, while his executive is the one that works more(physically) than elon. The emotional thing to say would be to give them both equal pay(or shares or whatever) but the company shareholders values Elon much more than the executive, she can be replaced, but Elon is the company(just an example, not very accurate but still I guess it conveys what I mean).

    I suspect UBI will contribute to the number of people pursuing a life with purpose because life choices will not have to be based solely on financial considerations. Everyone with artistic, intellectual or spiritual ambitions is free to pursue their passions. This would enable a larger number of people to subsequently share what they found with others as people love to share and inspire others with what they love themselves. But maybe it would also enable someone to quit their insurance job to become a gardener.
    Personally I didn't study art and philosophy for financial fears. With UBI, I would have. So this could enrich our countries cultural wealth.
    One thing is not Adressed: this will just highlight the importance of education to inspire raising free and autonomous individuals which should be the goal anyways! Young people that are not merely there to feed the needs of the market! So it might get bumpy like every major shift in the past was but it will be progress and could mean a new mode of living and experiencing life. Watch "Thrive" the documentary if you're interested. All the best to you and us.

      Christian Ponicki Welfare as it currently stands is a deterrent to a productive citizen. If you’re having trouble making ends meet and you receive assistance, getting a better job just means you lose welfare and are in the same position. So instead of people working harder, they just continue to receive welfare because working harder wouldn’t improve anything. Same goes for disability. Can’t work more because then you’d lose disability which artificially lowers productivity. UBI would prevent this.

    • @christianponicki9581
      @christianponicki9581 4 роки тому

      @@kg_atoozi That's partially true, welfare means that picking up a job doesn't net you more money... at first. But the point of welfare in the first place is to hold your income steady while you get on your feet, not to supplement future income. You shouldn't and won't profit from it at first, because that only comes once you've gotten raises/promotions/a better job or position at work.

    Thank you so much, this is a great video on this subject. Crucially, it speaks of the issue as what it is : a societal/lifestyle problem we will all face and its most probable solution. Too often, this issue is linked with political views and that makes it too polarizing/difficult for people to relate to.
    I also agree with your point of view that not a lot of people are inherently lazy or unproductive. By talking to a lot of people from different walks of life, I can tell that a big majority of us need something to do in life and will work towards something that has a value, by doing what we love, what we are good at, or by helping people we love.
    Sometimes what we want to do is not seen as "real work" by society because it doesn't create money, goods, or "services". But entertainment, art, heritage, education, taking care of our family, our community, of sick people, of our elders, etc. all these things are very useful to a society and are rarely well paid, sometimes not even paid, often not even seen as real work. UBI would certainly help a lot of people who really want to do more of these things that are seen as "unproductive".

    No matter your political view on economics - we NEED some solution to automation. Either we deal with increasing unemployment (there's no way of avoiding it - fighting it is futile), or most people crash into inescapable poverty. And by poverty I mean being truly penniless - because they won't be able to work. At that point, what do corporations intend on doing with all of their profits? Almost no one would buy from them. People will simply be dying of hunger instead. The how can be debated - and then people's political alignment can be taken into account. Simply continuing on and ignoring the employment which is bound to increase, will lead us into a dystopian plutocracy. SOMETHING must be done. If you really hate UBI, come up with another idea that doesn't involve stopping automation - because that's impossible. Progress doesn't stop, it accelerates, like it or not. I love it, but we must be prepared. As I said, this *is* happening.

    Not to mention, my feet are becoming problematic in terms of pain. Eventually, it'll get so bad, I may not be able to do any kind of hard labor job. I could use the $1,000 to help with that. Possibly save up for surgery, as various treatments are only doing so much.
    Heck, maybe I could use the $1,000 a month to start a small business online. One that focuses on some of my other skills that wouldn't require hard labor. Perhaps make it replace my current hard labor job altogether.

Without a body of representatives which we can vote in or out of power most government bodies such as police health and education would become overbearing and dicatatorial over time. Most jobs rely on licencing, planning permissions and legal oversight to function. Most aspects, from rules of traffic to regulation of banking, drugs and food quality and trading standards already depend heavily on government oversight for their proper functioning. Most peoples income, unless living completely off grid by subsistence farming, depends heavily on government oversight and administration already. UBI would be only another tiny step forward.

    Thank you for the content. I have been a long time fan of your work. The only push back I would give is in regards to the final portion of your video where you mention that if people come into more money or win the lottery that they may be happy for a few months but then lack any purpose or get bored. I can tell you this is not true and not the case. I have known people and read stories where they have come into money and finally feeling like they were released from the shackles of capitalism. They invested their money into things they were very passionate about and spent several years just creating, exploring, and enjoying the beautiful aspects of life. Eventually, they started their own businesses, but only once they were ready. It may also have to do with the fact that most of these people had a solid spiritual practice. So they already felt they had a purpose in life and just needed the means to manifest it. The issue with capitalism is that it does not give folks the capacity to dream and create; especially if what they choose to be does not match with the status quo. We will need programs that allow people to explore what they are passionate about. What they wish to contribute to the world. Another world and alternative is possible. We shouldn't sow seeds of doubt before we even begin to plant the seeds. Its the fault of capitalism that many people have no drive, passion or purpose in life, because they weren't given the space to explore and that goes back to our education systems. Capitalism is definitely on its way out. We just need the right people in leadership positions there to catch us when the system inevitably falls.

      @@arturodelarosa4394 not true in all jobs, but I see your point. Mostly, those who work more than 8 hours, require more sleep, with no time to sleep, so their family life and maintenance of their property and cars, etc, suffer (depending on pay, some jobs have wages that outpace the cost of paying others to do said work for you). This is a very complicated issue. But mostly, family and social life suffer, and medical weights on society from a population that is overworked, most probably creates more inefficiencies in GDP growth, if you cycle through to the end of the circle and how it affects the nation as a whole.

    If companies save say 20% by automating and we add a VAT of 7%, that means there is still a 13% reduction in costs. I see UBI as a way the people (especially the laid off people), get to share in the savings of Automation. We are all the inheritors of the "economy", so it could also be considered a Dividend, and We The People are the Board of Directors of our society. Don't let people become unnecessary and left to starve.

      How will capitalism and competition deal with that when these two things are maimed by the politicians and their decisions?
      In the end these taxes will just make it even more difficult for new and smaller companies to profit and operate, thus reducing competition. That's why people like Bill Gates approve of this. He gets even more political connections, his company is big enough to pay and still profit with the new tax(es) while other small and newer companies will just go bankrupt or not even get to exist.

    I’m way late to the discussion but I’m here because this video showed me the type of forward thinking a government can put into place quickly. I think this UBI concept is far too naive without much needed research to ensure actuarial consideration regarding the impact in a far broader context than organizational leaders are thinking of now. Also I believe more money needs to be put towards putting healthcare moving forward based on on our current global crisis. However, I believe this, THIS, “UBI”!!! Needs to be given a look at almost as much as healthcare. Thanks for the video!

      It's not about bringing happiness, it's about giving everyone a minimum basic standard of living so that they are free to pursue happiness without fear of starvation or homelessness. At the moment there is no basic standard, and motivation for working is done out of fear rather than inspiration. A UBI values the individual as a human being and a person rather than just the value of their labour.

      No, we do not have exact Universal Basic Income because you only get it if you are without a job. And we have had this system for as long as I live at least. There is no reason here to be homeless unless you want to be, or have extreme mental issues and are not able to keep an address which is required for the government funding. I can tell you though, there is no reason in Holland to be scared to be out of work. The only thing is social pressure. Which might diminish if most people get on that system, which will come if most people lose their jobs. A thing not happing right now. So that is one flaw, which is not present at this moment, will make this system fail. But being without a job here doesn't have consequences other than your dating life basically.
