Thank you. Iv been wanting to understand porphyrias on a basic level for so long, this is the best resource Iv found that lays out the basics!
Thank you for this. I have Variegate Porphyria and try to learn as much as I can about the disease, preventing attacks, and the treatment of attacks. I have found when I am at the beginning of an attack, eating 1 to 2 pints of ice cream (for the sugar*) can stop the attack. I also have various medications to help, including anti-nausea drugs, pain meds, magnesium supplements, etc.
*For those who don't know, sugar (dextrose, in an IV) is the first treatment of a porphyria attack. If that doesn't stop it, doctors have to consider panhematin, which usually requires a port for large vein access. And now there's a new treatment, so things are looking up for people like me.
