    Alot of people think she was romanticizing abuse with ultraviolence. But if there's one thing I've learned from domestic abuse survivors, a lot of them will somehow at some point justify the abuse or think they deserve it. And I think lana was just showing how much domestic abuse can mess up the victims head.

      @Krishana it’s all speculation bc she never confirmed a name but i have a few reasons why i think it’s lorde > lady gaga
      - lana said the person “questioned her authenticity, then stole her style”
      - lorde stated that lanas music was unhealthy for girls to listen to , then she went and made a semi-dark indie album
      - lana liked a post about lorde wearing a rubber band with thumb tacks shoved in it as a bracelet so she obv had ill feelings towards her
      - before uv was released , gaga , lindsay lohan , and her had a sleepover so i think whatever feeing from “so legit” we’re cleared up

    The term "ultraviolence" comes from the book A Clockwork Orange where the ultimate form of violence is violence to oneself. I think Lana actually is exploring a few ways she or people do that to themselves (consciously or otherwise) - by being in relationships with abusive people, through substance abuse, through working for "money power glory", through being the "other woman", etc.

      @@hamiltonlucio3910 the album's title track is a twisted fantasy of Lana's obsession with a man, and I think she ends up killing him or at most kidnapping him later on (him being one for carnage, having a dangerous lifestyle, always on the run as told in the title track). Ups and downs throughout the album and Swan Song she sort of goes all in with her obsession, to the point of ending her own career just to be with him. In the final song, (yes it's a cover but it fits the narrative) she basically says she was playing around and didn't mean to take it all on him. Just my own theory on how this album is darker than UV.

    With more and more listens, I’ve realized how sarcastic this album is. This album came after the controversy of the SNL live performance and she’s taking a jab at critics, especially with every song being in one take. Songs like Brooklyn baby, money power glory, and fucked my way up to the top are main examples, the critics believed she couldn’t really sing so THEREFORE she must be f*cking a producer in order to be successful !! And same thing with Money power glory is about critics saying that she is just money hungry when she is very much the most down to earth artist I’ve come across :)

    West Coast is about Lana moving from New York to California. She is leaving behind NY's rock music scene and preferring the glamour of Hollywood and all that the West Coast has to offer. But it's also an analogy of leaving behind and breaking up with her "cold, neglected lover", her previous partner, the one she talks about in the song Shades of Blue ("that's why I'm leaving you for the moment, Boy Blue, yeah, you"). Then, during the chorus, Lana starts a new relationship in LA (a hotter place) with a Latin lover, a Cuban man ("te deseo, cariño, boy, it's you I desire"), in search of that flame that was missing in her previous relationship. By the end of the song Lana is in love again, she is on fire.

    I’ve said this a lot of times on UA-cam, but I feel like she sings from the perspective of an abused woman very very well. She captures the fact that people in these situations feel like they can not survive without their abuser, they are made to believe that it is true love, and that it isn’t abuse. They make excuses for the bad things their abuser does because they feel they can’t leave, that they are worthless, maybe that it’s even their fault. They don’t see it as abuse, they see it as ‘normal’ and just what happens to them, because that’s what he tells her. I absolutely don’t think she glamourised abuse , she’s just telling a story from a perspective we rarely hear from, and I actually think it’s important because I feel like to an outsider it is obvious her character is in an abusive relationship, and maybe someone will hear these songs and relate and realise themselves, and gain strength from the realisation.

      Even beyond that, I feel like there's a double meaning to all of her songs through her takes on American culture. You could almost interpret ultraviolence as an ode to America and the complex relationship we have with it. The culture is toxic, obsessed with the bible and guns, appearing pretty on the surface but abusive when you take a deeper look. We have things like woodstock representing the free and rebellious spirit, and the glamor of New York where you get lost in the sea of faces and stories, and the nostalgia we have for the place we grew up. It's easy to get caught up in the aesthetics and ignore the real problems.

    The lyric “he hit me and it felt like a kiss” was actually from another person and she put it in the song because it fit the theme. She even doesn’t sing that lyric live anymore because it’s uncomfortable and she just doesn’t want to sing it anymore
    Edit: West Coast is my favourite from the song because of its interesting structure and I love it so much. Honeymoon is next which is my favourite. It’s so cinematic and just flows so well and feels like a movie. It’s the fans least favourite but it’s my favourite because it’s just so beautiful and cohesive

    I think it’s interesting that you mentioned that Lana doesn’t come out and say “it’s wrong” when she’s singing about domestic abuse. I think it’s simplistic and somewhat Puritan to say that an artist can only explore darker themes if they put a big old waning sign that says THIS IS WRONG. It makes it feel like an after school special to gram art like that. Saying that a woman can’t explore her own history or an artist can’t show the perspective of living through abuse unless they sanitize it defeats its purpose. If someone can’t speak openly about their own experiences without considering the feelings of how the reality of her being beaten might upset others then that is simply a way of silencing and censoring women.

    • @Luscent
      @Luscent  3 роки тому +2

Stories that are sad & beautiful & tragic & sometimes happy all at the same time, in a kinda “ it was the best of times , it was the worst of times “ tale of two cities , life is complex way .

It's also just a fuck you to the many people who question(ed) her authenticity and her debut in 2012. Same goes for Brooklyn Baby, which seems to both poke fun at the art scene but also idealise it
