Some people theorize that Lana is a ghost and that the guy in the music video is the boyfriend that killed her in the Born to Die video and that she’s still haunting him.
I think West Coast (the song) is primarily about her falling in love with California. This song is on Ultraviolence, her first Californian, west coast inspired album and I do think that in this song she's more in love with the west coast than she is with her lover. I think the two tempos and two men archetypes represent both sides of Lana : young indie simple AND old sophisticated Hollywood
Exactly thats my take as well. In the chorus she says she is on a balcony and asks her baby to move so she can see the view of the city, in which she is much more in love
I think you're spot on about the Queens of Saigon line, like a queen of nothing, or an imagined queen. Love how knowledgable you are, you pick up on things that many others might skim over. (Also totally relate to the discomfort of seeing Lana with an old guy lol)
So, I've seen a few things about this music video, and if you kind of watch it in context of a few of the other ones, it tells a story. Starting with Born to Die, then Blue Jeans, then this one. I'm pretty sure that the young guy in the three is the same guy. If you look at the older guy, it looks like the young guy, just aged up. In BTD, he kills her at the end. In Blue Jeans, she's haunting him in the pool, singing about how she'll love him until the end of time. Like even death isn't enough to end her love for him. In this video, it's a duality. You see her joking and having fun with her 'baby' and her 'sweet boy.' When she goes under water, it seems to be a metaphor for her life on the West Coast now- like she's here for good, living the glamorous life, perpetually stuck in time as the Hollywood starlet that she 'died' as, as opposed to when she's with the younger version of him, laughing and having fun. A few things to note. She says "I can see my sweet boy swaying, he's crazy y Cubano como yo my love, on the balcony and I'm singing 'move baby move baby, I'm in love'" like... swaying and move, saying keep on dancing, I'm in love with you. But also saying "move out of the way, I'm on the balcony and I want to see the city I'm in love with." I also like your take on Queens of Saigon, and I do think it could also be a metaphor for these women who move to Hollywood and have everything about them changed, like how Saigon was renamed. Apparently, if you go to Ho Chi Minh City now, if you call it Saigon, it's looked at as kind of an affectionate name that some locals still used. Saigon was seen as the Paris of the East. It was known to be so beautiful. It speaks of humanity's obsession with being beautiful, with changing yourself like they changed the city. And now you're beautiful, sure, but it's empty, because YOU don't exist anymore.
Love this reaction and and can’t wait for you to react to Summertime Sadness. It’s such a heavy music video, the visual are absolutely stunning but the fact Lana wrote it about her best friend and what happened to her over the summer is heartbreaking.
@@Methswans I doubt that. It probably portrays a friendship. Even though Lana has never mentioned that, it can be about a friend who committed suicide or just passed away.
Hi Mere! This videos goes on with Born to Die, Blue Jeans and Shades of Cool. The fast parts are about when they were together, memories. The slow parts, in the car, is just this man that is old now, imagining her beside him and how things would've been if she still there. The last part, with the fire, seems she's on hell. The last image is her in the water, so it's all connected. 😉
Love your videos! Thank you for the PSA on vaping/smoking, not a lot of people know just how detrimental it can be. As far as this song is concerned, I've always found it to be a sort of "self-destruction anthem" in the context of a toxic relationship and what it means to be in love with a person who may not necessarily love you back the way you do them. Notice how the lyrics are declarative and descriptive from the first person, but never reciprocated--it's like unrequited love plus the toxicity of a bad relationship. The music itself reflects this, as you point out, it goes from being kinda' upbeat to depressed and slowed down... almost mimicking the effects of going from an upper to a downer--the kind of drug imagery she often uses in her lyrics. What do you think?
I never made the connection with this song that she could be comparing a "bad boy" to California/the West Coast, but it totally makes sense! It's like the line from Arcadia "I'm not from the land of the palms, so I know I can't stay here, I'm not native". She is drawn to Hollywood even though it isn't good for her. You could take that analogy deeper with the two main men in the video, too. The older man could represent the stoic glamour of old Hollywood and the executives of the entertainment industry, where the younger man has a much more "normal" vibe, even a little New York. With the older man, it looks like she is in a trance, but with the younger, she is able to have fun and be herself.
This was one of Lana’s songs that first got me interested in her music and I love your reaction to it as always! Especially interesting point about the “silver starlets” and “Queens of Saigons” part. I feel like Lana has always been drawn to Hollywood glamour but in this case uses this imagery to show that an addiction to drugs and alcohol leads to nowhere fruitful and like almost leaves a person frozen in time somehow rather than fully living in a moment. The whole way she sings this song from her tone of voice to the lyrics sounds kind of hazy and “drunk” in a way. By the way, I bet you would really enjoy songs by The National, especially since they co-write some stuff with T Swift!! New Order T-Shirt is a great song, I highly recommend and would love to see your reaction to it! 🙂
I always thought of west coast being Lana reflecting on her past relationship. When she was younger things were fun and she could be wild and go mess around the beach with her boyfriend. Now she’s older, richer, she’s more glamorous.. but she misses that fun she once had and she’s torn between those two world Just my theory 😅
Yes, it’s a great video. However, it doesn’t fit w White Mustang, since it was originally filmed for Next Best American Record which was supposed to be on Lust for Life, but it got leaked, and she saved the song for Norman. If you play NBAR, along w the white mustang video, you’ll see how it makes more sense!
The "Why am I staying" made up lyric is completely fan based. It's never been confirmed at all by anyone in Lana's personal life and definitely not by Lana. Lyrics can sound like different words than they are and an artist can use this to their advantage. However, there's no reason to think Lana did this. Singing, "White mustang" can sound like "Why am I staying" but the idea that Lana did this purposefully or intentionally is only propelled by fans.
i would love to see your reaction to either "sweet" or "sweet carolina" - theyre rlly heartwarming songs of hers that could be palette cleansers for the reasons lana songs youve listened to
I think queen of Saigon is a play on Saigon (cinnamon). Cinnamon is a slang term for cocaine. Lana references cinnamin as a drug metaphor many times in her discography.
There definitely is a lot to unpack in her music videos and songs. As a newer Lana listener, I am getting a feeling that I need to listen intentionally to an album to see how it comprehensively speaks. I know Taylor’s albums are like that. I want find all the pieces of the puzzle Lana is giving us! Thanks for sharing this video so I could see it for the first time! Hope you’re feeling good vibes and feeling all the love you’re being sent! 🌼💛
Thanks for the great reaction ❤ if you like Lana's videos, you really should check her music video for "fuck it i love you × the greatest" (you did a reaction for the second song but not the first one) 💘
I loved the video! I know it seems very different from Lana, but it would be cool to hear your analysis of some Bjork songs. The recent albums have a lot of inspiration from difficult phases she went through, like divorce (Vulnicura), mourning (Fossora), and others are more pluralistic. I particularly like the first albums, especially Homogenic. A hug from Brazil!
You should react to Wild At Heart from her Chemtrails Over the Country Club album! I think you would really love it and the themes of fame it plays into!
Lol I’m glad I’m not the only one with the bang struggle, I have to trim mine like every other week 😅 definitely worth it though yours still looked good in the video.
She mentioned one time that sometimes when she writes a song that sounds like it is about a man it is really about a place, like NY. I think this one is about NY and LA. She was leaving NY for LA
The song expresses the difference between passionate and fiery love with a young man and settled love with a mature man. She tells him that he has music that will stay with him after she leaves him. Love for the young guy is more passionate, but it won't last. He is surrounded by admirers and cannot devote himself only to her and she understand that.
Some other artists you should definitely react to are Melanie Martinez and Marina. Their music also has a lot of symbolism, deep meanings and strong feelings
West coast video is sooo random lol lana is do random, she's at the beach with young guys, and then in a car with a old man, and than in a red dress with flames, and suddenly laying on the waves, like, what.
Lana del rey inspired an entire generation of millennials who had no idea what she was talking about. Because Lana’s depiction of the patriarchy, of femininity, of the male gaze and of whiteness is actually pretty profound. Her entire discography and everything involved was designed to portray feminine delusion. She’s basically expressing how girlhood and womanhood through a patriarchal lens, makes you wanna d!e. All of her themes about living fast and dying young and romanticizing mundanity is all just a commentary on the actual existential crisis that it is to be a woman-because within a patriarchal lens, life as a woman is short, your life as a woman will end about 75% sooner than any man. And thats why she has never veered away from her vintage Americana aesthetic. It represents the fact that we’re stuck, we’re stuck in time. The main things that lana del rey gets criticized for is that she romanticizes mental illness and that she’s just writing sad music for white women. But if thats the case then white women should listen to her because shes also narrating the attachment to the patriarchy and the addiction to her victimhood and to her misery. There is a reason why lana only uses black men and mediocre white men who are sometimes even three times her age in her music videos. Because i think the point of Lana’s art is that you’re supposed to walk away from it kind of disgusted. I could be wrong but i think lana has always been incredibly self aware about what it is exactly that she is portraying. I had no idea how much this woman had influenced me but when i started to snap out of it and come to and start to recognize my experience and my environment, I was MAD at Lana Del Rey. And it makes sense that i was mad at LDR because she was literally depicting the enemy of my life of every womans life. And she had started to add a little bit of commentary like the last video she did with Jon Batiste was pretty insightful. Anyway i do think that in this environment of modern feminism Lana Del Rey will come back in a big way. I think the reason why she was so misunderstood is that she was just a little bit too ahead of her time.
regarding the e-cigarette, the age of smokers are getting younger comparing to the traditional ones because there are so many flavours and so many cute and cool designs. now they can also mix drugs in it. you smoke you ruin your life and people who breathe your smoke. i mean when we go outside and we breathe AQI of, say, 72 (pm2.5), it's already like we smoke 2-3 cigarettes. so don't smoke. anyway, thanks for a great reaction.

this song literally ateeee, this isn’t very related to ldr but could you react to ‘American Teenager’ by Ethel Cain? (Also after your done doing your therapeutical[?] analysis you could read some of the song meaning on genius)
I love that she smokes in her videos, and she's not ashamed. Society judges those who smoke harshly, but smoking is part of the old Hollywood starlet persona, it's integral. I smoke as well and seeing her do it makes me feel nor so alone .
It looks like she's talking about two men, as we can see in the music video. But the way I see in the first part, she's talking about the West Coast to someone she cares back home, and in the second part, we can see the appeal to califonia. So I think the old man represents california, Hollywood and old money, and that's what she means when she says she's in love. "On the balcony and I'm saying, move baby, move baby I'm in love", to this person get out of the way so she can see the view. Of course it can be both things, the two men and West and East cost.
Hey, Mere. So I know you usually listen to newer and well-known songs on your channel, but I thought I could recommend a few that aren't as new or well-known. But still good. "Me" by Paula Cole, "Over and Over" by Teddy Thompson, "Snow Cherries From France" by Tori Amos, "Horses in the City" by Nina Gordon and "Whispering Pines" by The Band. (Okay, that last one is super old school, but it's my favorite song by my favorite band and it's all about loneliness, co-written and sung by someone who had so many gifts but also so many burdens. No wonder I related to him so much.) Anyway, they're all good, so have a listen if you'd like.
There are theories that the old man and the young one (he’s the same guy from blue jeans and btd) are the same person. After lana passed away (BTD video) she kept haunting him as a ghost of some sort.
I do really like the way you intrepret Lana del rey song, perhaps this song of lana del rey can have other meaning for me, since it was released, i have been listening to this song which is my favorit, and wondering what's the meaning behind every word until i relised that lana may talk about alcahool, since she said I am a lush, a lush means a heavy drinker, and in such a way you can realize she may singing about it and bout herself when she drunk and her love to that
Lana intimated about the move, being with one boyfriend, while fantasizing about another more mature love interest in Hollywood . . . Being in one situation, while looking forward to another . . . It could have analogies OUTSIDE romance . . . I think it is her Carly Simon's Anticipation . . . being in one situation while your mind is in a fantasy.
As always, I love the Lana reactions even for songs I don't really like such as this one. If you want a break from Lana, check out "Deeper Well" by Kacey Musgraves.
just love love love your content, um begging you to react a hayley williams “first thing to go” music of flowers for vases álbum, she is such a awesome writer
Great reaction! Lana does still smoke sometimes but very rarely. She definitely vapes way more than she ever smoked now which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. 😞
Lana is the definition of someone who does things for the plot and I love her for it

She mentioned one time that sometimes when she writes a song that sounds like it is about a man it is really about a place, like NY. I think this one is about NY and LA. She was leaving NY for LA
She's also said men are a stand-in for alcohol in some of her songs, since she used to struggle with alcoholism
I always assumed "his hands are up" is that he is dancing on the balcony with a parliament in his mouth.
Agree, in this case it's literal. She is watching him while he is smoking and dancing.
I think the “hands are up” might mean he’s surrenders and he’s not resisting her love
She is reflecting on how he looked when she saw him.
Watch her short film, Tropico!!
The song expresses the difference between passionate and fiery love with a young man and settled love with a mature man.

this song literally ateeee, this isn’t very related to ldr but could you react to ‘American Teenager’ by Ethel Cain? (Also after your done doing your therapeutical[?] analysis you could read some of the song meaning on genius)
YESSS
I’d love to see you react to some songs by Halsey and Billie Eilish 💗
I think you have seen the last video with both these guys. it's gonna be alright :)
Love your bangs!!
I love that she smokes in her videos, and she's not ashamed. Society judges those who smoke harshly, but smoking is part of the old Hollywood starlet persona, it's integral. I smoke as well and seeing her do it makes me feel nor so alone .
Please do Cola and Off To The Races
It looks like she's talking about two men, as we can see in the music video. But the way I see in the first part, she's talking about the West Coast to someone she cares back home, and in the second part, we can see the appeal to califonia. So I think the old man represents california, Hollywood and old money, and that's what she means when she says she's in love. "On the balcony and I'm saying, move baby, move baby I'm in love", to this person get out of the way so she can see the view. Of course it can be both things, the two men and West and East cost.
Do “Florida Kilos” pleaseee😊
Taylor Hawkins, oh wow i felt the same, so 😢
There are theories that the old man and the young one (he’s the same guy from blue jeans and btd) are the same person. After lana passed away (BTD video) she kept haunting him as a ghost of some sort.
I do really like the way you intrepret Lana del rey song, perhaps this song of lana del rey can have other meaning for me, since it was released, i have been listening to this song which is my favorit, and wondering what's the meaning behind every word until i relised that lana may talk about alcahool, since she said I am a lush, a lush means a heavy drinker, and in such a way you can realize she may singing about it and bout herself when she drunk and her love to that
They’re just playing on the beach it wasn’t violent how he pushed her in the water…
React to Carmen by Lana Del Rey please.!!🖤

Great reaction! Lana does still smoke sometimes but very rarely. She definitely vapes way more than she ever smoked now which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. 😞
