*VIDEO SPOILERS* so if you care about that, read after you watch the video!
Okay, I’m still not even happy with the “update” that a filmed re: this album yesterday. I’ve continued to listen to the album and it’s growing more and more with every listen. I’m starting to differentiate the songs a bit more and my appreciation for the production has even increased. I think the struggle with this album comes from how complex it really is. Trying to digest it after one, two, three listens is nearly impossible. It’s so heavy, so dark, so deep, making it difficult to grasp. But again, as I continue to listen, the more I grow to love it. I believe as a full record, I am still going to say I prefer Born to Die but I could see that changing any day in the near future. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video and I’m very much looking forward to Honeymoon.

In case truth matters to anybody, Lou didn't overdose. He died after being ill for quite a while. That's also the reason I doubt Lana's story, as he wasn't likely to be working that close to the end, but maybe she misunderstood the situation.

Money Power Glory and Fucked My Way Up to the Top are both sarcastic. She’s taking critic’s perceptions of her and basically making a dark joke about it, like “oh yeah, I’m totally here to just ruin everything, course I am. That’s what I’m about.” She gets crucified all the time by people who don’t understand her music.

You: listen cruel world by lana
Me: welcome to the psychodelic world of lana del rey💫
Fact 1: in ultraviolence lana is talking like she was in the skin of the girlfriend of
    Jim Morrrison (the doors).
Fact 2: brookling baby its in my opinion one of her best songs, is her STATEMENT as an artist afert all the hate she recived, all the critic about her, because many critics call her "FAKE"
    She sings:
"They say im to young to love you" - all the critics that cames out after she keeping writing songs about older mans,
like she wasent free to write about whatever she wants.
"They say i dont understand the freedom land of the 17s"
How media criticized her for singing about these era, her influences about this decade, like she wasent free of writing about this decade and understand it just because she wasent born in it or if that turns her into a fake artist, just because she is singing about the past and she really born in other decade.
    "I'm talking about my generation
    Talking about that newer nation
And if you don't like it
    You can beat it
    Beat it, baby
You never liked the way I said it
If you don't get it, then forget it
So I don't have to fucking explain it" - she literally says, im talking about real things,
I'm not glamorizing the abuse about anything, many womans have this problems, if you dont like it STOP TO LISTEN MY SONGS ITS NOT FOR YOU, LET ME BE. You dont like the perspective from the place i write my songs, you just dont listened it OK?

I think people confuse written, lived experiences that work into art as a form of glorification. Artists writing, singing, performing the things they’ve lived through is a tale as old as time and isn’t new to any realm of theatre, songwriting, or storytelling. Glorification comes more in the form of how someone likes or loves something and endorses or praises it.

"Money, power, glory" is a "fuck you" to her haters and the media because that is what they were saying about her so she took it, flipped it and made a song out of it.
"Fucked my way to the top" is a diss track aimed at an artist who said that about her, again she took it and sarcastically made a song out of it.
"old money" is lana Reminiscing about her childhood.
"the other woman" is a Nina Simone cover.
"pretty when I cry" was freestyled.

Ultraviolence really grows on you. I first listened to it when I was a freshman in high school. I hated most of it except for a few songs (Brooklyn Baby, Shades of Cool, Pretty When You Cry). To me, those songs resonated with her old albums the most. I felt like I lost the “old Lana” in Ultraviolence and was extremely disappointed; to me her music style changed a lot and all the songs sounded the same. As time went on I started listening to it more often, and I really don’t know what it is about Lana’s music, but I feel like you just need to get used to it because her vocals and her instrumentals are so unique and unlike anything you’ve ever listened to before. Flash forward a few years, my favorite album is now Ultraviolence. There’s just something about it. It’s so dark and seductive, yet the feelings in it are so raw and unfiltered. It really brings out all of these feelings of grief, sadness, and nostalgia you never even knew you had. Each song in Ultraviolence is like a sad story, with the moral being that no matter how much you love someone, you are bound to get hurt. The price of love is pain.

The title song "pretty when you cry" is her boyfriend telling her that. Is about her boy whos control her, she is in a abusive relationship,
her boyfriend manipulates her psychologically so he tells her something like (its an interpretation of the context):
Im doing what i want with you, you have to do what i want, and if make you cry, babe, dosent worry, is not bad, because you are pretty when you cry, soo i will do what I want no matter if it hurts you and I make you cry - manipulation.
In a relationship where she is being MANIPULATED she BELIEVES what he is saying y she acceps all the shit from him soo for that reason she sings en el chorus" because im pretty when i cry", is the manipulated Lana whos sings this part.

Black Beauty it's about when you're in love with someone who has depression. She paint all in black, but she is not depressed. That's why she sings "Life is beautiful, but you don't have a clue".

Lana came out with BTD to make her name in the industry, but then they claimed her to be not original and she slammed Ultraviolence on their face
Also when I was in an abusive relationship I used to listen to this album a lot, it gave me lots of comfort since when you're under abuse you can't really tell it's bad for you so, Lana hugged me for 3 years

I was one of the people hyping up UV and im sorry because at the end of the day its always like that. After we see a lot of people hype something so much, its inevitable to set the bar so impossibly high. I'm glad that after deep diving and more re-listens you're getting to love this album a bit more (it was the same for me with this album and honeymoon especially) I'm really excited for you to react to NFR, it's frequently called her magnum opus and I think you might love it :)

Yes this album is very dark and heavy and its my favorite but I dont listen to it very often because it puts me in a very Dark place if that makes sense. So I understand how you may feel liking BTD better. Cant wait for you to listen the other albums!

girl, this album made me stan lana because I loved the production and stuff but for the lyrics, it took me YEARS to fully appreciate the emotion, deepness, heartfelt, darkness, soulful, sadness and beauty of this album. it's so haunting and explosive, makes me wanna scream and at the same time, put me on a place I don't know if I can take it, it's full and so fragile. her mind and sound change a lot since then and tbh I prefer her newest album NFR (which I think you gonna love it), but UV it's still her most vulnerable album for me, even more than honeymoon, another one that I did only appreciated years after because is soooo personal and deep, it's really sad but so pretty too, "The Blackest Day" it's one of my fav songs of all time.

honestly i immediately loved uv right after it dropped, probably because i was into rock bands at the time and i really wanted lana to release an even darker album but i understand that it might be too heavy and dark for a lot of people. my friend was also the same, she had only liked uv when she listened to it again after so many years. also the music videos for uv era are amazing!

the best thing about this album is that it was recorded over a live band! which is like never done, at least not since the 70s or something lol. her singing in sync with the live music around her is definitely part of the reason I think this album is magical

I first listened to Born to Die in 2012 and is still my favourite album. People hipe up Ultraviolence so much, and it's a great album, I love it, but tbh is 4th on my ranking of Lana's albums

  • @m3rrys0ngstr3ss
    @m3rrys0ngstr3ss 4 роки тому +3

OH this is gonna fuck you UP! And I do appreciate you being thorough, I know I have to take the time to sink in with Lana's new stuff whenever she premieres something.
Edit - I think what's tough with this album is that later tracks aren't as hard, but stuff like "Cruel World" and "Shades of Cool" are just so unrelenting that it's hard to breathe.
Edit 2 - I think "Ultraviolence" the song is one of the best depictions of abuse in music because of the rumors I've heard about it. *SUPPOSEDLY*, and that's a big supposedly there, "Jim" initially nearly saved Lana's life; she was spiraling due to drinking, especially with the stuff she talked about on "This Is What Makes Us Girls", and Jim helped her get sober - but it wasn't because he cared about her, it was because he was a total control freak. To me, if that's true, it makes it much easier to understand why it would have been so hard to leave him and why getting hit truly might have felt like true love.

Fun Facts about this ALBUM: There was no pre written music or lyrics for Pretty When You Cry, they were all just messing around and created a masterpiece in one take. Dan Auerbach, the producer of Ultraviolence, says that 90% of the vocals Lana did, were recorded at once, while the band was laying down the instrumentals. Brooklyn Baby was supposed to be a duet with Lou Reed, but she passed away the VERY day The Velvet Underground crooner was supposed to to record with Lana.
