    A good video on the impacts the Coronavirus is having on marinas. We're feeling it here at the marinas in Juneau, Alaska. A guy I know is in quarantine on his small powerboat, along w/ his girlfriend who tested positive. They've been unable to get groceries (they lost some business and gear for their diving and fishing businesses) and had to apply for Covid unemployment here in the States, so I've been running a few groceries and supplies to the marina ramp and he comes up and gets it from where I put it down (while I'm in my car some 10 meters away). So stay safe out there. Also, good info to know about your staysail and how long someone can get service out of a dacron sail. I'd guessed it was anywhere from 10-15 years if used regularly. I have some older dacron sails but mostly use my mylar/kevlar racing sails but the main is wearing thin, so I might have to change it out in a couple of years for a backup dacron sail I have onboard. Cheers and keep up the excellent videos!

    I have a bit of a idea for you for cleaning hull, make a multi piece angled pole and a stiff deck cleaning brush, angle the pole to match curves of the hull so you can do most of the scrubbing from on deck or in dock. Might help save some water time

I did get my first sail in last weekend, and have been spending more time on Jennifer Marie, just fiddling around. Your in a lovely anchorage and you should have fun there for awhile! Cheers!

    Hi, enjoying your videos. You mention the mooring cost in Cartagena at Euro 100 per night. Looking at their website it should be around 50 per night. I am intending to go to Cartagena this summer with my boat and would like to avoid any surprises. Enjoy the med, don’t forget to go to Cabrera, south east of Mallorca. A truly magical place.

      Yes it came as a shock to us. They do deals for stays longer than a month but for anything less than that the rates at YPC arn't negotiable and they have risen significantly from their old advertised rates. RCRC marina next door are a cheaper option for short stays.

    Balearics will be expensive, Lockdown or not! I remember us needing a new paper chart couple years ago. £17 in the UK , €45 euro in Mallorca.... ouch! but plenty of anchorages if there is still space to anchor (which I think you might be very lucky this time round). Btw can’t wait for your anchor chain video ;-) keep it up

    Hi Guys, great to see you have finally escaped your Mar Menor prison, but I think it could have been a lot worse in other places.... Small update from me, sailed down from Denia with the initial plan of going in to Gib, but alas, once I left Denia there were no longer any places available.... spent a few days anchored at la Linea, which I know you have both enjoyed previously, then got in to Alcaidesa marine, where I am still currently.... Lots of jobs etc ongoing for me onboard prior to an expected (I hope) departure around the 10th, destination Preveza.... There I hope to arrive 01 July and have my better half fly in to Corfu 02 July... will try to find a good weather window to depart Alcaidesa and then a 15 - 20 days to Greece....
    Fair winds to you and hope your will enjoy a good season....

      Oh wow, shame to have to crash through the med so fast! I heard today that Greece arn't accepting people from the UK when they open up on 1st July? Hope your wife can manage to get in. Also Murcia Today were reporting the the President may extend lockdown by another 2 weeks so travelling out of region may not be allowed. If you're on transit to another country that may not affect you? We were hoping to go to the Balearics next week in stage 3 but it seems that may not be possible now until 1st July :(

      @@svfairisle Morning 🙂🙂🙂 my better half will be travelling out of Ukraine, still not certain of much but hopefully she will be able to travel. My current status is 'transit' so hopefully I will not be prevented from departing, we have had some delivery yachts through in the last weeks without problems of coming and going, but I plan to check more today. The last official news I read re: Greece doesn't go as far as July other than all airports plan to be open for international arrivals with random checks and sea arrivals will be permitted 👍👍👍👍👍

    Great video, as always, thanks! We have been locked down on our boat in A Coruna Spain, since 14th March and are being told by our Marina that we must return each night and that we cannot move around the province and anchor out. Annoying as we wanted to move !st June. Do you have any official information on what boating activities are allowed and when? A little jealous of you going cruising again! Any help appreciated. Thanks.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 роки тому

      I feel your pain! If you can't cruise the province you must still be in stage 1. I'm not up to speed with whats happening in Northern Spain, but on the Med coast the Costa del Sol is still in stage 1 so they cant stay out. Murcia is in stage 2 so we can. We were hoping to sail to the Balearics next week when we move to stage 3 but we've just heard that sailing beyond the province may be delayed another two weeks due to an outbreak in Mallorca.

    • @cathytodd3996
      @cathytodd3996 4 роки тому

      @@svfairisle Thanks for your reply. Galicia is in phase 2, so we should be able to sail within our province. I think there is an issue here because A Coruna is a transit port, allowing boats in to refuel and provision but not to stay. The marina has to inform the Guards Civil of all new arrivals. Shouldn't impact us as we have been in Spain since February, but they are being very strict. So we wait until June 8th. So glad you are able to be underway again.

    Well Balearic's go to high season in June an from my proper experience there is no negotiation possible. We were in Port during the lock down and hardly got a discount even with being trapped in Port by the lockdown. Clear statement for June from the port we stayed that there is no reduction.
    I recommend that you check out the ports of IB-Ports www.portsib.es/es/paginas/inicio these are state operated and far more cheaper then the Clubs.

    • @svfairisle

      Thanks, yes we will certainly check out IB ports. Hoping that we can pretty much stay at anchor though.

    • @riffseeks10s46
      @riffseeks10s46 4 роки тому

      Unfortunately your Hans Christian 49 is too large for IB. I was in the Balearics two years ago for the entire summer. I stayed in my all-time record high marina in Ibiza city, €243 per night as I recall. I had some engine problems in Andrax and stayed there for five or six days at €150 per night with no negotiation for an even longer stay, Palma de Mallorca is also very expensive, but I found a marina smack dab in the middle of town that normally stored many charter boats, so during the week when they were out of the marina, they had fairly reasonable rates. But there are enough fabulous anchorages so that you don’t want to spend any time in a hot Marina anyway.

  • @andyhilton3359

    When we were ocean cruising and sailing downwind we were advised to have the following set up. (this is for a set up with the wind on the port aft quarter, we also never sailed directly downwind!) Genoa poled out to port, quite hard, staysail very hard, as flat as possible to STBD. Main out to STBD with gybe preventer winched in hard. `I know it seems counter intuitive but we were told to try this by the Oyster techs when we were in Las Palmas and in good winds it works really well and certainly reduces the rolling compared with goose winging. Maybe worth a try....safe sailing and loving the reports. Andy www.intotheblue56.com

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 роки тому

      Yes I do use a similar setup to that sometimes and I agree it's a good one. I do usually poll out the yankee on the slightly windward side and pull the main out hard with the preventer. I don't often bother with the staysail though, but I can see sheeted in hard it could help stop roll, will definitely try that thanks. I was being lazy on this occasion, should have set up the pole ready, all the shenanigans with the bridge distracted me & by the time we got the other side in the rolly stuff getting on deck to grapple with the pole wasn't appealing! I know, been lazing around in lockdown too long!
