Sometimes it's easy to forget, but then there are those cards that just completely blow it out of the water with how masterful the artwork is. Love your content, btw
His videos remind me of how relative time feels. It's like getting into the zone with a good video game, suddenly it's past your bedtime and you never noticed the clock.
I am not going to lie, this video was the thing that finally got me playing Magic. I had always been a passive observer watching some of my older friends collect and play Magic, and was intrigued but also put off by the vast repository of cards, lore, and game knowledge they all had. I feel many new players experience this, but Magic was intimidating, and trying to breach the 30 years of history was difficult. It didn't help that I never had a solid introduction. I picked up a deck builders kit around Dragons of Tarkir to play with some others, but generally had no idea what I was doing. So, the cards were tossed months later and Magic simply faded- I didn't give it much thought besides that. But somehow when browsing UA-cam, as I find myself doing more and more these days, your videos kept getting recommended to me. Maybe it was the fact I was beginning to get into D&D and general nerd culture overall, but I kept seeing these lore and art videos from you. Eventually, I clicked on one. I watched it, saw that it was MTG related and offhand just dismissed it. But it kept appearing in my recommended "hey finish this video" section. And so when you released this video, about "Ravnica," something I had heard floating around due to MTGA's launch and distributed among strategy game players on UA-cam and Twitch, I checked it out. Everything, from the relaxing, presentable editing and voice, to the breakdown on the colors that represent the game, to the exploration of one of Magic's greatest planes, ignited a spark of interest in me that has led me to spend far too much money and time in the game, but still getting just the right amount of enjoyment to make it all worth it. You sir, have truly affected my life and quickly created what I imagine will be a lifelong passion. I just wanted to say, not even knowing if you will ever see this comment months after this video's release, Thank you.
Sam you have to be one of the greatest video essayists I’ve ever seen on the platform I’ve only gotten into Magic about six months ago or so, and your Black Lotus video was the first proper Magic content I’ve seen on UA-cam, but suffice to say I was blown away! You’re videos always have a crazy high amount of quality, and from this one they just seem to be getting better and better! So I just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to the UA-cam magic community, and your reminders for why I love this game so much Much love from South Africa, thanks once again for doing what you do, and I look forward to watching your next video, peace!
man, i feel kinda in awe/spoiled by the production values here and just... how satisfying this content is - no bullshit dilution, no top 10 list, no highlight clip at the start. much love to ya Rhystic.
This is one of those few channels where I click ‘Like’ before the play button. This is because I am sure of watching a well-made, enjoyable video on a game that I have loved for many years.
This is some of the best mtg content on the internet. I find this more interesting more of the time than even Mark Rosewater's Tumblr page. Which is SUPER interesting haha thank you for all you're doing and the hard work for this labor-of-love. I work at one of the largest comic/game/hobby stores on the West Coast and I have been recommending your content to tons of people. Hope to keep watching for a long time.
Good lord. Your videos are consistently outstanding Sam. Always an excellent watch in terms of research, quality visuals and sounds. Always brilliant. thank you for your hard work.
This plane was always so special to me. I never realized I felt so strongly about the art direction in it before. I think this one helps me appreciate the guilds I normally don't follow that much more.
Thats why I get so excited for ravnica sets because I can have an identity when playing cards where I cant with other sets. I can identify with a guild and act like that guild while playing where other sets I feel like im just playing a mish mash of cards.
I'm emailing this to my classmates in my college art classes! This really helped to expand the way I think about capturing the feeling of a theme, and the way I approach color to evoke those feelings. There's a lot of value in this video here, and not just for to magic players
Try taking 3 8 mg melatonin tabs and letting them dissolve under your tongue. This absolutely knocks me the fuck out when I need to sleep and be up for work early.
I had actually taken 2 meletonin about 2 hours previous to this comment. Just didnt help last night. I thankfully managed to fall asleep. Just hope I can readjust my sleep schedual. Edit: also, thank you both for the consern
If you like relaxing voices to deal with insomnia check out ASMR videos. There are millions out there and many viewers confirm it helps when trying to sleep
I watched this when it originally came out, but I had to watch it again. Thanks for doin such a good job with this video. Whether it’s a painting or a video, well-done art is a gift that continues to give :)
I have a few genres of videos that I watch, and there's always the one or two creators that I would say that they define that genre. You define the Magic genre, video essay genre, and overall quality genre. You're someone that any aspiring creator looks up to due to sheer quality and skill, everything just as intentional and thought out as the game you talk about. Thanks, Sam, for all that you do. Just know that you are one of the great UA-camrs that set the standard for quality content.
I just barely leave comments but binge watch videos. But this video, like most of yours, is such an incredible masterpiece combining entertainment, art and education. I can't imagine how much time it must take to create this video. Keep going with this channel!
I’m an artist and a fan of magic myself, and the art has been in large part what draws me to the game. This video means a lot to me on both an artistic and very personal level. Truely, well done.
I just have to appreciate your video's and their amazing true-to-home contents. Not too elaborate to loose yourself into the details, but deep enough to invoke a sence of understanding! Very well done! Not only that, but your narraration is spot on. I'm impressed, again and again! - As a matter of fact: every time I go to the city Antwerp (almost daily) I see the cathedral in the background with the buzzing city life in it's wake, metro's and busses for transportation, walking paths and small alleys cast in shadows of the buildings, a great promenade lit by sunlight... I don't think I could get any closer to Ravnica myself...
I dont even play MTG (planning on changing that since we currently have a shit format in Yugioh ATM) but I really like your videos and find them exceptionaly entretaining.
I had a similar situation. I was playing Yugioh for 10 years competetively and needed a change of pace. Hearthstone felt too simple for me and now Magic is where I ended up. couldnt be happier tho. So feel free to try it. Maybe try out Mtg Arena first, since its basically free.
I stopped playing MTG years ago but what drew me to the game all these years back is the absolutely amazing artwork that is constantly produced for what could have been a disposable toy product. I'm really glad you're taking such lengths to display the work that is being put in this game! Amazing job.
ravnica was one of the first major sets i really dove into & was my absolute favorite as a kid, it's amazing to see how much work has to go into expressing something as deceptively simple as 'the first set happens during autumn'. i remember the cards & the game itself was always very good at linking cards together through typing, naming, effects, artwork, etc. even without background knowledge of the wider lore. i'm just impressed with how much meticulous thought & planning has to go into every aspect of a deep & successful expansion set like this. amazing video & critique!
I am amazed at how you can constantly make videos this good and interesting, the production Value on this channel is precious and i wish i could show this channel to everyone. Thank you for always deepening my knowledge about this game that we love so much.
I was shocked too. Ravnica is my favorite set om MTG. Now I know why. My homeland city. When I saw the Prahv in Azorius guild I thought that was coincidence of Prague . Now I know it isn't.
That was an amazing analysis of ravnica and it's position within the artistic and narrative world of magic. It's awesome how something like colours can become philosophies through arrangement and then develop in such a complicated yet sensical way. There are some great artistic minds behind this game. They have such a strong grasp on the concepts with which they work.
My first MTG set was from Return to Ravnica, and I absolutely love the plane. And I love how much you showed me on the thought process of the people who make the city into a reality. I always loved the art for Ravnica, and after seeing how much thought, love and care was put into every single card drawn makes me fall in love with it even more. Thank you so much for such a wonderful video! - Boros/Rakdos player. (Mainly play Boros, but as no one can be completely order cannot exist without chaos, Rakdos brings out some of the pent up chaos.)
I’m consistently amazed by the simple fact that people like you exist. Your passion is contagious and the amount of craftsmanship and dedication you pour into everything you make is inspiring. You’re wonderfully unique and immensely entertaining. Thank you for existing Sam.
Very nice. I love how Ravnica (and other faction sets) have really epitomized the color pairings for all Magic fans to enjoy. It gives us a common language. I also love how I can see so many of Wizards' recent articles in this! Like the parts on factions and some of the art showing how the guilds were conceptualized.
Your videos are absolutely gorgeous, man. Not only are they will written, but everything flows so smoothly and your voice puts me at an ease that no other UA-camr does. I cannot compliment you and express my gratitude enough. One of these days I will hopefully have the funds to pay back the joy you and your videos have given me. Thank you, Sam.
Well done! Your work is always pristine and well-polished, and I always appreciate that. I really enjoy the play on color throughout this video. I expected your take on the color pairings, and you started there, but then dove into the actual color of the actual images. Then we experienced the color that time gives all things as it strides along - seasons, past, future. Loved it!
I've never played a game of mtg in my life. Somehow your video One With Nothing popped up in my recommendation feed and now over watched nearly all of your videos. You hold your content to an extremely high bar, the visuals are stunning, the commentary is colorful and meaningful. You've made me care about something I had only ever written off previously. A lot of people are saying the same thing but damn it man your content is just awesome!
This is my favourite video you've done yet Sam. I particularly liked the interviews with Ryan and TItus and how you related art direction to the artists' individual interpretations. I'm about to sit down at my easel, and I will be thinking about all of the great colour theory you covered. Thanks for this!
People like you keeping this website alive. Im not even the biggest magic fan,but i do love art, and you explain the reasonings behind every last detail in the images. I have learnt so much from you, your channel, and the amazing artist of MTG. Thanks man.
It's absurd how good your content is. Thank you so much for poking me to watch the art more closely every now and then and explaining it to me at the same time.
One never quite realises how much work goes into the detailes of a game such as magic. This is why I really lovw your videos though, as they bring insight.
I see new video, I make popcorn, grab a pop, and enjoy, every single time I love the work you put into these; you have a great talent, voice, and passion. Please keep up the awesome work.
This autumn my mother had a stroke and died a few weeks ago, as winter set in. At this time I rediscovered magic that I had played since a child. Playing again and discovering this game and its world has provided me so much comfort. One of the oddest feelings is how opening a booster pack helps or reviewing cards can ease anxiety at the worst periods of this time. This video and all of rystics studies really expresses why people can build a deep emotional bond. Personally I’ve found myself draw to Izzet. A frantic mix of rage and control to move forward and use that energy towards the creative.
im in love with your visuall essays( calling them video is bunching them with other content of this site and feels deteriorating). you go in depth on your subject, are articulate and leave nothing to be desired if not simply more of this content. please keep doing those and keep up the quality of work you put into them. I like your choices of topics and always look foward to your next publication. hats off to you
This was a beautiful essay that encapsulated why I love the Ravnica blocks of MTG so much. Not always the most competitive cards, but always the most flavorful. I will never grow tired of a city that has so much lore and personality.
I was looking foward to the next video from this channel and I am by No means disappointed, in fact this is my favorite channel for MTG! Everything here is something that I can look foward to and then some for three reasons: 1. Game History and Art. 2. The Videos are detailed and worth the wait. 3.There are little to no other UA-cam channels that delve into what makes this game beyond the game play. Safe to say this Channel is One Of My Favorate Channels and am looking foward to the next video!
You create among some of the best content on youtube. I am not an artist, but watching your videos helped make me look at artwork differently. I come to learn about a game that I love, but I leave with a sense that this game is a reflection of life and experiences that we all share. That's what makes WOTC's direction and design so effective; it taps in to a part of us that we are unknowingly familiar with but at a glance can relate to.
Nothing perks up a bad day like some relaxing commentary of an interesting topic. Admittedly when I saw that "Uploaded 20 minutes", I was too out of it to even watch. A quick rest later, firing up UA-cam again I immediately hit this video, and man. Instant relief.
I got into Magic because of it's artwork, and Return to Ravnica was actually the first Booster Box I purchased. Your video NAIL the feelings I had about this game, and about Ravnica specifically. Amazing video, I genuinely look forward to your releases eagerly every single time.
Always feel so blessed when you upload. Consistently relaxing and engaging. Like the kinda lecture you're interested in and comfortable sitting still through. Comfortable is the best word to describe your content. Can't wait for the next one
I love how you can make the small parts of magic that most just comb over stand out and make me feel special just for playing a game that has so much more meaning then untap upkeep draw.
Thank you as always for producing insightful videos. You are up there with Every Frame a Painting as one of the best video-essayists to grace this platform.
You make some of the best videos/short documentaries on the internet. It is always so interesting to see your content, thank you for it, and keep on going!
Ahhh, perfect. I want all of your videos in a tiny tin boxset that also comes with some rustic alt-art cards and why not, a bag of finely roasted coffee... Thanks for the nostalgia and the optimism on the future! This goes far beyond Magic! Cheers from Argentina
Just wow. Not surprised by the quality, but still greatly impressed. Easily some of the best Mtg content I've found. Thank you so much and as always looking forward to more.
its always so intriguing to take something you doing think much of, like a card back, and then learn more about it, what it means, and how it was used to change and create so much more
Great videos, lots of work put into it, structured narration, parallels with real places. You made the best thing any niche content creator can do, and that is to make your content interesting, relevant and useful to those that don't even care about that niche and maybe never will, or now maybe will after watching this.
I got bumbs with that Calvino's quote. And you read it as Florence was shown in the video! My favorite writer and my own city together. What a beautiful montage. Congrats!
Bravo man, this was such a great video. Followed over from a reddit post and I'm glad I did. Brought the entire realm of magic onto a whole other level for me.
Amazing as always. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for taking what we love with extra care and hoisting it in such a regal fashion for the whole world to appreciate, and fall in love to.
Really great piece man, these videos are always so detailed and meticulous, the interviews and graphics are extremely well done, and your analysis of what gets to the heart of these designs and ways of thinking is spot on.
I don't even play Magic anymore. Never was a serious player. Watching your videos makes me appreciate the thought that goes into the game and its marketing. Thank you.
From time to time il still watch this video as im starting to learn more about color theory. Its like im watching class featuring something i love to play
Sometimes I forget that Magic is art.
Dammit TierZoo you like magic too? You keep gettting cooler. 👍
The art adds to the Magic.
We need the colors/guilds in the actual life meta now

Masterfully done, as always. Sam, you add so much value to this community.
Cheers Professor!!!! 😃
Agreed! Thank you for seeking to elevate critical thinking and analysis of what otherwise is ignored. Hats off to you sir.
couldn't agree more,prof.
Well said Prof.
community is full of talentless hacks who can't cut it working or teaching. what a crock
Your channel is the pinnacle of what content should be. This amount of effort that UA-cam creators should strive to have.
What an amazing video! I can't wait to see the last 5 guilds receive the same treatment! 😁

please keep doing those and keep up the quality of work you put into them.
Everything here is something that I can look foward to and then some for three reasons:
As someone who lived in Florence for a bit, I loved that comparison at the end and those pictures gave me some great nostalgia. Awesome video Sam!
I never noticed how much autumn imagery was in this set until I watched this video. Your videos are so good.
Thank you as always for producing insightful videos. You are up there with Every Frame a Painting as one of the best video-essayists to grace this platform.
You make some of the best videos/short documentaries on the internet. It is always so interesting to see your content, thank you for it, and keep on going!
Please do this for the other sets in this non-block.
Also your description of Dimir is what makes me love them so much. Very beautifully articulated.
I like the comparisons to the real world, and the artist insights. I'm sure you're getting a lot of money/respect off of these, so good for you.
That reflection at the end was just superb. Great job at capturing the emotions that I didn't know I had.
Well that's one channel that I actually sit and watch the video. Not just having it on side-screen. Great production as usual.
its always so intriguing to take something you doing think much of, like a card back, and then learn more about it, what it means, and how it was used to change and create so much more
Your videos made me look through each card as a whole pieces of art with its unique story to tell. Thank you for that.
Great videos, lots of work put into it, structured narration, parallels with real places. You made the best thing any niche content creator can do, and that is to make your content interesting, relevant and useful to those that don't even care about that niche and maybe never will, or now maybe will after watching this.
Titus is my favorite! So awesome you got him on the show. Love everything you do, keep on creating Sam!
Love the care and effort you put in every video. Its always so relaxing watching your videos i really appreciate it thank you
Yussss, Rhystic is back with another super high-quality video, glad to see you back man!
I got bumbs with that Calvino's quote. And you read it as Florence was shown in the video! My favorite writer and my own city together. What a beautiful montage. Congrats!
Every of your videos is state of art.
Thank you very much for this 21 minutes with coffee :)
Bravo man, this was such a great video. Followed over from a reddit post and I'm glad I did. Brought the entire realm of magic onto a whole other level for me.
Great video! I like that you included comments by Titus Lunter. He is a nice guy, great artist and Magic player himself.
Amazing as always. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for taking what we love with extra care and hoisting it in such a regal fashion for the whole world to appreciate, and fall in love to.
Absolutely amazing video essay by far you've become one of my favorite channels of this community
This is a masterpiece as always, Sam
You need more views. Such ridiculously high quality content, which you can enjoy even if you don't even play magic. Keep it up man, you're amazing.
Thank you.
This video is brilliant, it talks about art, design, marketing, sociology... Bravo!
Always wonderful to see your videos in my feed, Sam. I enjoyed each and every second of them.
You are killing it!! You content is the best by a landslide. Can't get enough
Each and every video fron Rhystic Studies is a masterpiece.
I don't like commenting on videos. I can't, not comment on how beautiful I found this video to be. Outstanding.
The quality of your content is just amazing Sam
From time to time il still watch this video as im starting to learn more about color theory. Its like im watching class featuring something i love to play
thank you so much for enriching the magic community and adding a facette that is very much needed.
I know these videos take time and effort, and the wait is always super worth it! Thanks for being awesome!
Always waiting for new stuff from this channel. Never disappoints
You are amazing. Every video, down to a note, is perfectly crafted and produced. Please keep it up man.
Excellent!
The end monologue brought me to tears. Beautifully executed!
Just when I was having a tour in your videos, you show up and deliver this master piece
Thank you for your amazing job!
I wish you could make more of these videos however I get that it takes a lot of time. Keep making these masterpieces and cheers on making this one.
Fantastic video and gives me an entire new perspective to not only Ravnica but Magic in general
