I'm still waiting on Rob Alexander.
What is the last card you show. And also great video, you introduced me to what is now my favourite mtg artist.
But I already did :( do rebecca guay
This was awesome. Is there any chance you'll do one on the art of Phil Foglio? I know it's a little outside of the range of normal magic art, but that's why I think it'd be great.
Could you do Adam Paquette, please?
"Hey Seb, can you show me the value in protecting the innocent?"
"Hey Seb, you know the tinge of sadness that haunts a sunny Saturday afternoon?"
"Hey Seb, show me regret."
"Hey Seb, play Despacito?"
Truly mastery of his form
Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeb!
"Hey Seb, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
@@KMn048 gladiator movies?
Truly amazing work. Just...wow.
ain't he good?
History made and told, two distinct and awesome arts.
@TheManaSource I want you to know I read that in your voice XD
Seb is hands-down my favorite artist in Mtg. His style is imaginative, haunting, and instantly recognizable.
a couple of quick notes:
• I apologize, Canadians! I showed an image of a map of Labrador instead of Newfoundland (and after reading that the latter was an island, I thought it looked strange). Thanks for correcting me!
• Geoffrey Palmer (@livingcardsmtg) provided the animation for Eidolon of Blossoms at 4:43. Follow his work and reach out: he's one of the best folks in the community and is so talented with his craft.
Eh, close enough. XD
I enjoy how you loved your own comment.
You also mispronounced it. New found land like 3 words. String them together shouldn't sound like new Finland
@gregheffly No, he pronounced it properly, it's the pronunciation that Canadians and people from Newfoundland use. It's not pronounced 1 word at a time, like "New Found Land", it's more like Newfindlind, just as he said in the video.
CanadianBaconPwnage dude. I live here. I grew up in mount pearl
oh wow. seeing that archfiend is the first time ive ever considered buying a card just for for the art. i think im a fan of this guy
I feel you. Not about the first time thing though, I don't even want to know how many cards (especially very bad ones) I purchased just for the art! :)
First time I saw Archfiend of Ifnir, I was freaked out and couldn’t understand exactly why. This composition analysis did an excellent job of explaining it, right down to “this isn’t how MtG Demon creatures usually look.”
If they ever make a live action Dark Souls film, they should get this guy to direct it.
You literally read my mind.
The silent and stoic chrarcter at the beginning definately reminds me of darksouls.
William Merrill
He would harmonize quite well with the dark tones and abstract world of dark souls
the one at 3:41 instantly reminded me of bloodborne.
When the video started I honestly thought that was an ad for a dark game
Artists like this is one of the many reasons why Magic: the Gathering is still a leading force in card games both digital and physical! Great work Seb McKinnon, and absolutely superb video, Sam!
Some of my favorite art in the cards are made by Seb Mckinnon. This was before I even knew they were made by him. My favorites are 'Essence Scatter' and 'Bedevil'.
I don't believe any artist has impacted me how Seb McKinnon has.
My entire online presence is shaped for a character based on my love for a Shadows over Innistrad uncommon: Topplegeist. The curious, almost childlike feeling of their face and in their gesture, the light and it's importance on Innistrad.. It's beautiful and it made me really look more at art than I had before.
Thank you, Sam, for making this video.
Seb is, by far, my favorite MTG artist. Cant wait to receive his first edition art book in a couple months!
A tarot deck made by these guy would be breath-taking
so true
Seb Mckinnon is what got me into mtg, I took one look at his Order of Midnight and I was sold.
The absolute artistry that is this video man. Like jesus, you hit every. Single. Pieces. I truly admire you man, thank you for this beautiful information and inspiration
Only recently got into Magic, Seb has been the first artist who really grabbed me. As soon as I saw Deliver Unto Evil, I immediately looked up which other cards were his. It's such a unique style that stands out while still fitting so well into the tone of the game. His work on the Golgari cards is so fantastic.
I love it when cards tell you what they do just from the artwork alone.
MTG needs to capitalize on such principles.
Soulherder is by far my favorite piece of his. I would love to hang it in my home.
He's got another Kickstarter going, soulherder is among the playmats available!
@@samuelirwin4880 thanks Samuel i got there thanks to you 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Very powerful intro, and great video as always :)
Well, I guess I know why I'll be making dinner 15 minutes late!
MTG Muddstah Well I guess I'll be sleeping 15 minutes later! (It's 1 AM)
MTG Muddstah if you don't make your dinner before 15 minutes the nutrients in the ingredients are legally allowed to leave.
**Overused Joke Intensifies**
Yehia Falcon dang you beat me to it
*14:58
Gabriel Häggebrink guess the nutrients aren't going to leave.
I love Seb's art. Just surreal enough and looks to be ripped straight from a faerie tale.
Wish I could find more MTG artists with his atmosphere.
i feel like his mythos paintings from ikoria really capture the sort of tribal people's style of depicting these god like beings, my favorite is either that set of images or prismatic piper. because he's just a creepy lil' guy of elemental chaos.
This video makes me happy. I only properly got into the game recently, and Seb was the first artist whose work caught my attention enough for me to actually make of point of investigating them further (the specific card was Soulherder btw). Pretty cool seeing all these other people in the comments with similar experiences.
Seb is easily one of the best current artists in Magic right now. He's consistently knocked it out of the park with every single artwork he's done. I'm super excited to see what he does for Throne of Eldraine
I was just about to ask about the music... I can't believe that Seb made it. He is truly, amazingly creative
This is one of the best. Totally awesome stuff. Its interesting how I can overlook an artist so easily... and then feel like a total idiot when you bring it to my attention. Thanks for that Sam.
Seb’s work is incredible. Some of these are pieces that have absolutely hunted me.
I hadn’t dug into his work yet but I will absolutely do so. Truly inspiring and brilliantly done.
This channel makes me feel what really is “PLAYING MAGIC”
The fact that his artwork for Stasis and Cuombajj Witches aren't on actual cards saddens me greatly. I would get them in foil almost immediately.
Old stasis > any other magic art
@@r.r.theninja6812 >Diabolic Vision has entered the chat.
They have now been printed in an actual set.
May have taken a few years but it's finally printed.
@@Kohdok Good to see you here, Kohdok!
your videos are among the few that I leave my computer feeling that I did not just waste time on youtube thank you
Man this art is amazing, thanks for showcasing it in a way that really does it justice.
Came back to your channel today and also revisited Seb's gallery. His render of damnation as a close representation of judgement day is one worthy addition. Yet he knocks the ball completely out of the park with Soulherder. That image is something else - and I love it.
Archfiend of Ifnir has been one of my favorite cards from the past year or so and after seeing the detailed art with your observations Ive gained a new appreciation for the card and Sebs art as a whole
"Because of his ability to turn the macabre into something beautiful" Very enlightening line, awesome video as always.
Haven't watched it yet but I can tell it'd be worthwhile.
Thanks for the effort put in these vids, love the crisp editing and the insight you give us about these great artists!
seriously dude.
I felt like I'm sitting at a very engaging art history class.
this video game me chills. I'm just astounded at the level of research, analysis, critical thinking, insight etc... the amount of work you put into this.
The Professor at Tolarian runs the lower div classes.
you run the upper div classes.
Stasis (the depiction of the young girl surrounded by stone soldiers) is jaw dropping. Wow. Just wow.
Some of McKinnon art I recognized, but I can't believe how much of his work I've overlooked.
Excellent video as always. Love this series and love this channel. Keep it up!
Simply stellar man.... The flavor he manifests is the reason I still remember random cards like "debt to the deathless" ..... If I had any true talent in concept art, his style would be the closest that I'd be replicating....
I wasn't even aware that many of my favorite MTG artworks were all by him; amazing artist indeed, and great video analysis.
What a video. Congratulations, Sir. Subscribed
That was such an amazing video.
Seb Mckinnon is one of those artist that you've seen many times on magic cards where you go like "oh thats actually a pretty good artwork. I wonder who made it.. Seb Mckinnon? i wonder what else he made?" And then 75 pieces later and 2 hours of net searching you're still in awe.
And this video gave me that experince with him. I love to discover magic art and art with you. Thank you.
Your such a small channel you make some of the most quality content I’ve ever seen on UA-cam, you are a prime example or hard work. Shoutout to you
The symmetry in his work creates so much room for symbolism, almost like a medieval diagram or tapestry - much more than a cinematic snapshot of what is happening in the fantasy world
Goddamn Seb, goddamn…
This channel helped inspire me to back to art college. It's unreal how you break down the depth and techniques involved in illustration.
Seb's art gives me chills. His art brings this game to life and is a big reason I play it.
There is nothing about this video that isn't masterfully crafted and meticulously incorporated. The introduction of the Kin Fables and Seb's personal background give viewers an attachment to the artist. Each video essay you make always has a sub-theme behind it, this one focusing on atmosphere; the music and video before showing anything related to magic was a brilliant addition! I love all of your videos, thank you for your work!
this is my favorite magic artist, love his style
I never realized the artist for all my favorite cards was... one artist. Seriously, these are like all my favorite cards for their art. He's really fucking talented!
Thank you so much for making this. I'm not an art person but your videos help me appreciate and understand the art. So thank you so much for this series. Keep up the awesome work
Recently, I hadn't been watching your videos as much as it was difficult for me to want to sit down for the long periods of time required. But your content fulfills an unspoken want I didn't know I had, that not very many content creators touch. Keep being fantastic, I hope that you innovate a way to increase the frequency of your uploads without sacrificing your staggering quality to do so.
Amazing as always. These videos really help me appreciate the art of Magic cards way more than I already do. Thank you for taking the time to do these.
Seb's pieces are some of the most thought-provoking for me. Many creatures in Magic look angry and menacing, but many of Seb's are expressionless. He somehow manages to build atmospheric context in such a way that provides an ominous and genuinely unsettling tone without even needing to convey those aspects directly in the subject entity. It's so hard to pinpoint, but I think that the foggy, wispy elements along with the often expressionless creatures lends to a sense of the unknown. He manages to tap into that "other" kind of fear so successfully. His work is fantastic.
One of my favorite artits I feel deserve their own video is Igor Kieryluk, he truely brings the mystery to New Phyrexia
your video essays are one of the best organized and well spoken on youtube, love every one of your videos
Seb McKinnon's art is AMAZING! One of my favorite MTG artists of all time. :)
Please keep doing these videos! I’ve watched all of them and can’t get enough
Not gonna lie, Seb's gotta be one of absolute favourite artists EVER, not just in MTG, and hearing that things like Essence Flux and Deathsprout are digital just makes me want to work harder at my own digital art!
this didn't age well
@@z1p632 Oof, yeah...
@@Skullgrin. what happened?
@@BleedTheRic McKinnon turned out to be an anti-masker jerk who sided with a bunch of looneys a while back. It was really disheartening...
@@BleedTheRic People in the internet, blowing things out of proportion, as usual.
I've watched this study several times before, but each time I do, it is a powerful emotional experience. Seb's work, so stunning on its own, is really brought to life by the insight, wit, and grace of the storytelling and visual design. Rhystic Studies has produced some of the most important content in the history of MTG, and I hope it is widely recognized and watched for years to come and helps to shape the legacy of this game in the popular consciousness. Sam brings out depth and gravitas that a neophyte might miss completely, and the old guard may take for granted, or even be blind to.
So good
I didn’t realize how much I liked his art
Archfiend has to be my favorite
I think it says a lot about this channel when every time i go to the comment section i see the creators i follow comment.
every time you post your amazing videos most of the community (at least it feels like it) is there waiting to watch and always agree you are one of or the most high quality MTG content creator
Ah, March 32nd. Here at last!
More and more of a fan every installment. Don’t ever change please. Many others and I can tell your passion is as great as the artist you shed light on. Waiting for an amazing video is like waiting to discover ones new favorite dish. Unexpected but always welcomed.
Great essay as always Sam. His work reminds me a lot of Stephen Kasner, who I have always wished was a Magic artist. Keep up the great work.
Your commentary on art is art in its own right. This video had me in tears. Thank you.
Wasn't a fan of Seb HOLY FUDGE AM I NOW i hope he does a green or blue colored playmat AWSOME VID
You mean like a... Growth Spiral?

This video is so next level. I come back to rewatch it every few days because it is just that good.
A wonderfull video about one of my favorit artist 😃
Dang, it's one thing to just look at a piece of art and feel something, but to have a description of the feelings it invokes and why just takes it to another level. Well done on the video, great job!
When I saw the title of the video, I asked myself... who? I have not been putting enough attention to his art. But I remember when I first saw his art for Entomb, and I decided I needed it for my Meren deck. I love so many of his pieces, but until now, I did not make a connection between them. As always, thank you Sam. It's a pleasure to give you Patreon dollars.
I come back and watch this every once in a while, it's my personal favorite video of yours. Seb's Kickstarter just hit $1 million, meaning the film is fully funded! So excited to see what comes out of it.
Didn't even watch yet, liked anyway. Thank you Sam for covering my favorite MTG artist. Happy Easter!
You achieved that I took out my EDH decks to study every piece of art individually. Thank you Sam, to increase my appreciation of the art of magic!
11:11 I just had this deep emotional respond to your description of the arch fiend,
some kind of sorrow
I have several seb's print (legals ones) at home and they are outstanding! I'm absolutly in love with his work! Good job to you depincting it!
I love this series!! I learn so much about a game I adore so highly every time I watch you :)
Dude, your work is amazing.
I tried to play magic because the art of the cards is impressive, and everytime that i watch your videos, i analize again the cards that i like
God I fuckinc love your videos
This almost brought me to tears. Brilliant artist, brilliant analysis of said artist. Thank you.
I feel bad that I never realized some of my favorite cards were made by the same artist.
Edit: my favorite is the Pale Rider of Trostrad.
Incredible work on the video-- I rarely check the artist on cards that I like, but i've now found that Seb is responsible for a handful of my favorite art!
Now that i've seen a bigger version of archfiend of ifnir i want a play mat with it's art
my personal favorite artist, Seb's pieces look amazing
he also happens to be the only artist i know of who's works
will always look incredible in foil
If/when Seb puts playmats up for sale, I definitely want to own one
Boy, I don't know how to say this but Seb just finished a kickstarter for limited edition playmats
If you're still interested he's running a second kickstarter right now for playmats!
I keep a spot in my collection for my favorite cards based on their art and/or flavor text, and i'll say, without even realizing it, a good chunk of that is most likely Seb McKinnon's work!
I love the dark, brooding nature of his pieces, as if darkness was a physical manifestation, especially with that black fog/aura he loves to use.
Fantastic work, i'll have to look out for him more often from now on!
Seb's work on Dirge of Dread caught my attention during previews for Masters 25. Holy cow, is that some awesome art. Cuombajj Witches was incredibly awesome, too.
Seriously, Seb has been doing some really awesome work over the last few years. Thank you, Sam, for highlighting him.
This is perhaps my favorite of your work thus far. Debt to the Deathless is among my favorite artwork of any card, and learning of the artist behind it was incredibly enlightening. So much respect!
Soulherder is one of my favorites.
His art is so moody and atmospheric. Silent Clearing is probably my favorite piece.
This hits different now
This video is by far my favorite one you have done so far. Fantastic
I feel like seb could make the perfect representation of a skinwalker
these are far and away, the best, most interesting videos on the entire subject. thank you for these works.
Vaporkin? More like Welkin Tern. And don't even get me started on Pongify or Searing Spear.
I'd like to buy you dinner for this comment.
Wut
Rhystic Studies I accept
Is there a joke in here because I'm missing it entirely...
I think it's just a joke about how Vaporkin and Welkin Tern are the same card with different names (just like Searing Spear and Lightning Strike are the same card with different names)
I feel compelled to let you know that this series has impacted my life. A great appreciation for music is the only art I felt I can truly pick apart and enjoy. This series however, has given me a new perspective on visual art. I’ve learned so much from this series, including how to truly delve into a work of art. I can’t look at Magic cards the same way anymore, and it is amazing. Keep up the great work.
i n f u c k i n g s a n e
I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. You continue to elevate this game and its culture. Your work reminds me that the game and its entire subculture has an almost infinite depth.
April fools! There is no Seb McKinnon!
Got me at "and he also did the music". Really? Fantastic art, cinematics AND music? Pffft.
But there is a Seb Mckinnon, only he didn't do every card featured here. He actually IS a film director and music composer check out his website (made in 2015 I might add) : www.sebmckinnon.com/illustration/
Of course there is! He's the Red Grin Grumble of the Art world!
Thank you so much for this!! McKinnon and Hamm are my all time favorite magic artists. Chronostuttuer, despite offering nothing as far as gameplay goes, has been one of my favorite illustrations; it’s awesome you took time to highlight. Awesome work from you too man! Keep it up!
I came from Austin
Same
Wow, what an outstanding video!
As others have noted before me: thank you for highlighting this artist's work, style, and more for those of us who might have gotten too engrossed in the game to appreciate it before!
I love everything about magic the gathering, but seb's artwork is something that drives me away from cool-looking cards and really makes me awe at the whole mtg world. when i play, i feel satisfied to play a seb's artwork just because the art make me feel one with magic. I trully worship his artwork and look forward for his next compositions to come, He stands out the most beautiful and eerie way I could eve imaginel Thank you,, seb, for making my gameplay feel the way I dreamt of.
(Also, Soulherder is the most beautifully haunting art magic could ever hope for, even though I don't play it at all)
Another outstanding video! Moved by these artist studies and can't get enough of them! Looking forward to seeing which artist you will pick next
