I find myself disagreeing with many of Glenn's positions but I'd have to say that I believe he is the most credible, uncompromised, courageous, journalist out there these days. besides that though, just in general its a rather unscrupulous question. how are you determining what a democracy is? it is beyond obvious, (and has essentially been proven regardless of its obviousness) that the US functions as an oligarchy, and that there is virtually no correlation between what average voters actually want and what their "democratically elected" politicians actually do. israel is also obviously not a democracy, and in even starker terms than that of the US (at least not a "liberal democracy", since palestinians and all non jews are literally codified into law as second-class citizens).
"democracy" in the west really just means a relatively high standard of living (thanks most chiefly, but not only, to accumulated wealth from third world plunder and quasi slave labor) with the thinnest patina of liberal values to put some lipstick on the pig for the ruling classes that have a personal and emotional interest in believing that their class positions are justified by some kind of merit

You are wrong to imagine western wealth is maintained by colonial plunder. Western wealth is based on advanced technology, higher education, and more rational and efficient economic systems. The labor and natural resources western nations obtain from third world nations are negligible contributors to western wealth. All that excess labor and unused natural resources are worth nothing to societies that lack the means to develop those resources or usefully employ that labor.
America is the most warring nation on Earth.

• The U.S. has killed more people in their homeland-both combatants and, by an order of magnitude more, innocent civilians-than all other nations in the post-WWII era combined.
• It was true in 1967 when Martin Luther King said it, and it remains true today: _"The US is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world."_
• No one reading this comment will live to see the day when the US is not at war somewhere on the globe.
