Watch my Capra UTB18 Blow Your Mind

- What difference do weighted wheels make on this little thing? Let's find out!
I started with an Axial Capra UTB18 1/18 RTR crawler. I wanted to replace my custom-built Mini 1.9 comp crawler. But though the UTB18 had potential, there was a considerable gap in capability between the two.
RCAWD supplied these wheels for review. They also are supporting our local club (Melbourne Comp Crawlers) and are very responsive on feedback and product development. Thanks, RCAWD, you guys are ace.

Update late May: RCAWD overdrive and underdrive portal gears are ready!
- 24/17 (1.4118:1 ratio) - 22.78% overdrive.
- 27/14 (1.9286:1 ratio) - a 10% underdrive
Combine both sets (24/17 front, 27/24 rear) for roughly 33% overdrive - perfect for competition crawling!

Another performer! Just like that Vanquish rtr, this made it look easy! Congrats on working with RCAWD too, that's really cool that they'll put up some support for your local scene. Hopefully the little UTB serves you well in future comps 💪
Thanks Andy! I'm super excited to pit it against the big scary pro comp rigs. I really want to know how a bolt-on chassis like mine will do against such custom-built rigs. Gonna find out soon enough!
And yeah, rcawd have been very receptive and in particular, *fast*. We last discussed gear ratios for new products on December 20, and on Jan 15 I had a manufacturing sample in my hand. Craaaazy fast!
@@RCTNT That's really fast turnaround! I'll definitely keep an out for them when I'm shopping parts. You know more than I do how the courses look, but from here at least, your UTB is checking a lot of boxes
Oh, it's a killer. Wasn't sure when it was new, didn't know how far we could take it without having to spend heaps, but yes, it's a real performer now!
What a weapon. i installed the furitek bettle chassis on mine a while ago, those wheels and tyres look like the perfect addition to it.
Try them, you'll like em!
I've done the exact same thing with the Outback tracker and boy what a simple and really effective improvement 👏
That was smooooooooooth. I've gotten my mini capra pretty tuned but that was mind blowing particularly given how many rigs have struggled with the problems. Nice job!
Thanks, I'm really happy with it :)
Impressive machine, excellent video crafting, and I’m totally intrigued by a Traxxas-free Traxxas
It'll be an interesting experiment!
Those are Awsome!
What a great product some nice weight that looks good.
Bigger rigs in comps go carbon fiber is this not case for minis…there is def less place to add weight. Crazy how well it performed.
Saved web site and sending it to hopefully get it printed.!
Oh sweet, I hope you like it! My last mini (linked in Description) was CF and went really well. But I could get more brass on the outer ends of the front axles than I can on the UTB18 axles. I must design some hangers to see if I can get a bit more down low, as then I could remove some of the weight from the wheels. But in its present config, she's a beast alright!
Live stream of your next utb18 build would be sick!!
I'm looking forward to it!
Oh man! Now I've just got to have that little rock crawler. Thank Craig! Seriously, thank you;-)
It's epic, you'll love it.
Great crawler machine👍💪😉
Came up pretty alright for stock links, trans, axles and shafts, didn't it!
That machine looks so cool! I have an SCX24, and I also fitted some sort of plastic cage on it, I love that car so much more now, ha ha. That 18th scale definitely is cool, and I'm happy you fixed the noise issue...
I heard of RCAWD, but for some reason haven't needed any of their parts yet, probably someday!
What dates in April?
April 26-28

Made it look too easy!
Went well eh!
Got this printed up went together so easy with just a few longer screws which if your at this point in building mini comp rigs you prob have.
Have some running vidoe with stock tires super impressive….
Was reading on the wrcca site and the cage doesn’t meet the specs for length…going to add something to lengthen….so I can run in comps with it.
Have some HP rovers coming to run for wheels from Dlux. And some metal Beadlocks….couldnt jump in and buy these wheels for 100+. That looks like sick combo you have watched this video a few times but so nice !!!
Even if I can’t get it comp legal I love it already.
You're kidding, it's not in spec?? Geez that's an oversight. I'll check that tomorrow and fix it immediately. (ah yep, 134mm long when it should be 172mm. Wow, easily fixed, but what an oversight!)
Huge thanks for letting me know, I was going to test this at Nationals at the end of April and it would have been gutting to not be able to run it. I'll report back with an update.
Glad you like it anyway! And thanks heaps for letting me know!!
Ok, I've designed a tail piece to address this that'll add 10.3g in filament and whatever 4x little screws weigh. It's not ideal, but with Nationals so close, there's no way I'm going to risk a brand new chassis design when I know this works! I've updated the page with the new part attached: rc-tnt.com/project/rc-tnt-ht-feather-chassis-for-utb18-v2-36/
Ed. Just fitted it to mine. She's still about 8mm too short. I'll just modify it and update this comment when done. It'll be a few hours, I'm really busy today!
Update has been made and uploaded, but not tested. It should work, we'll soon see!
Thanks again for catching this, I'm deeply grateful!!
Very nice Craig! Heavy wheels has been my go to for a while now. Hands down the single best mod imo. Without weight you dont get traction. Awesome how this just crushed those lines like nothing. :)
I've enjoyed the incremental improvements, yeah. Satisfying!
I don't know if I've seen you so excited or positive about a crawler. It will be interesting to see how it performs in future meets. You definitely need different or more challenging problems for this crawler.
Thanks. It dominated at our last local comp but ECCF is where we'll really see what it's made of.
My course is designed to test 1/10 scale crawlers, but given the UTB18 out of the box couldn't do a lot of the problems, it's still been useful! But yes, need more rocks!
Way more capable now!! Great job!
Hey Craig you have a awesome little crawler and congrats on the RCAWD sponsor to your club and the channel...
Thanks 👍
That thing is a beast! You can physically see the weight in the wheels pushing against the tire adding grip. It looks amazing seeing it work. 👍🏼
Yeah, satisfying isn't it
Wish i could have one
I think these will be in production for a good while yet. Axial seems to have had a challenge keeping up with demand for both the car and upgrade parts. You'll get your chance, hopefully!
Ah, ok. But even if it will be available i may not be be able to buy one because of finances. I have one cheap rc that i bought 19 years ago and it still runs, though, it is not an rc crawler that i used to dream and only watched videos of it on you tube. Here in the Philippines, only few people can afford such a luxury whoever get into that hobby. Anyways, thanks for your time on replying,...i watch most of your videos. Keep posting sir.
Then I am sorry we are so far apart. Thank you for watching along. Hopefully one day you get a chance to drive one!
Impressive! And my ears thank you!
Haha yes, good to have it quiet now!
What motor do you use?
This motor: ua-cam.com/video/e-ILpmQpH7E/v-deo.html
And now with a rhino 40a esc for silent running. Good combo.
Thank you. Nice videos on your channel, love them. They help alot.👍
Glad to hear it, thanks!
