      To be precise it's Windows Server 2012 R2 since it's still supported and it still has security updates but Windows 8.1 is what it's based on, so it works and runs exactly the same.
      So to everyone here, you should absolutely try it out! Windows 10 has almost no reason to exist at all!!

      It is only a user interface downgrade, and while it's much uglier, it's the lightest Windows can get with no compromises other than aesthetics and UI.
      I have plenty of data to show all the incredible speed boosts that 8.1 gave me, so ask me anything.
      While it may won't be that useful to get it on a powerful PC, I can guarantee you that it gives an amazing speed boost in about everything for slower PCs with less RAM or older CPUs.

    So, I have used Chris's tool with, and without a custom ISO (that I made, ripping out everything but the frameworks and whatnot).
    With a system of 4 years, no refresh of the OS, I managed to get it down to 180 processes.
    With a clean install with my custom ISO, I have it stable to 166 processes or lower every time.
    The glaring thing that I saw that Britec did not do (or has but still has many of) is disabling startups. This is on a person to person bases. Just know that if you don't disable a good portion of your startup programs, you too could also have over 200 processes on startup. There are also other things to help lower processes, but Chris's tool is a good overall in covering most of them. Just be carful what you take out using Chris's tool.

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09  2 роки тому +2

      I already had start-ups disabled. But you are right, each pc will be different and yes, if you want to remove some processes then Chris Titus tools is one you could use. But you wont remove half the processes, that was clickbait lol

  • @Jakos01
    @Jakos01 2 роки тому +28

    Chris has really optimised the tool over the past months/years, it should always be a top priority to use this when you do a fresh install of Windows, as it really does help give you back more performance of the computer YOU PAID FOR. I use this a lot across multiple systems, even my workstation lol. My gaming desktop has 80 processes running at boot and I love how slim it is.
    That being said I am a firm believer that you should never let a system get this bloated with background tasks and startup applications, especially if you game on the system, because it really is a waste of resources that could be better utilised by your games. I get that every person's scenario is different and I'm not saying that you should purge everything from running at all, but I mean in cases like Microsoft Edge, if you literally never use it then what point is there in having it run at system start?

  • @DevilbyMoonlight

    Chris does great work, as you do too, you both give a lot to the community, I just checked my own machine and with just chrome + 4 tabs running am using 152 processes with 1702 threads, and just over 4.5 of 32GB of ram used, also running malwarebytes premium & dragon center and the essential bells and whistles in the background on Win10H on a now old i7 MSI GE73, it can be trimmed down a bit more but am happy with that, I have trimmed a fair bit of fat off an update rollup a couple of years ago and the junkware hasnt come back on, I removed the unneeded packages by hand from powershell - and had to rename cortana on the fly before its service restarted to get rid of it- I dont like the extra hand holding and the other junk that increases your attack surface so that went! I always check the systems integrity before imaging the partition with dism before adjusting anything, its better to be safe than sorry :). I usually pull the drive out of a new personal laptop and install from scratch on a new empty device, but not had to do this on the GE73 as there wasnt that much bloat on it when new which surprised me- this install is around 5 years old - it still gets the essential and security updates - and it gets more use than my workstation - it also plays star citizen pretty well for an old i7 8750h/gtx1060 machine too

    I believe that for modern browsers that run tabs in isolated memory spaces, each tab instance also counts as a process. So if you clean boot your machine, even running something like and you start off with say 260 processes, if you open a browser with 20 tabs the process count will automatically jump to 280.
    I believe this is the case, though I may certainly be wrong.
    Bri is absolutely right - on machines that you actually use, there really is only so far you can go to reduce core Windows processes before you either have issues or you break something you didn't know you needed for some programs to function.

    For me, with all the necessary drivers, programs, launchers and backlight control (I only use msi center which can also be slimmed down) on windows 11, of course, after a bit more thorough optimization, I went down from about 150 processes to 75-80 at startup.
    So it depends on how much garbage you install because probably half of it is unnecessary anyway.
    For the rest Chris had more in mind halving the windows processes and he succeeded and everyone uses different software so the end result may be different.

    And of course when you have that many processes running after using Chris's script, that's when you go through your startup programs in msconfig or whatever. You don't necessarily need manufacturwer programs or driver applications running every bootup unless you really need them. Between Chrome processes, Malwarebytes Firewall control, iSLC, and Winamp and the touchpad driver, I'm at 94. 68 when Chrome is closed.

I think installation of programs will not close update processes even if the program is closed, you can see them in task manager in details tab, using portable programs is better because once you close the program, all processes stops.

    After Chris's tool, my pc is at around 135 processes with Steam, ICUE, MSI Afterburber and Soundlock. All these run at startup because i need them. I have a 13700KF with 32GB of ram at 6400mhZ. Reducing below 135 will not be providing any major performance gains for me since my PC can easily handle that (i have 1%-2% CPU usage at idle with the above programs open). So don't get too obsessed with the numbers, especially if you have a modern CPU and at least 32GB of ram.

      There is a much better alternative, hear me out:
      My *Windows 8.1* has only *32 processes* running, and only takes from *600 to 800MBs of RAM.*
      To be precise it's Windows Server 2012 R2 since it's still supported and it still has security updates but Windows 8.1 is what it's based on, so it works and runs exactly the same.
      So to everyone here, you should absolutely try it out! Windows 10 has almost no reason to exist at all, and you'll see why!
      In 8.1 there is literally *NOT ONE FEATURE MISSING FROM WINDOWS 10.*
      It is only a user interface downgrade, and while it's much uglier, it's the lightest Windows can get with no compromises other than aesthetics and UI.
      I have plenty of data to show all the incredible speed boosts that 8.1 gave me, so ask me anything.
      While it may won't be that useful to get it on a powerful PC, I can guarantee you that it gives an amazing speed boost in about everything for older PCs with less RAM or slower CPUs.

    Razer Synapse - no.
    Standard Nvidia Drivers with GeForce Experience - no.

    Asus Armory Crate - hell no!
