The Better Beer review heads to Cork Ireland for their next review to taste the second most popular Irish Stout in the world - Murphy's Irish Stout from Murphy Brewery Ireland Unlimited.
Transcript: "James: On Tap Murphys Irish Stout.
Hi, Im James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are reviewing our first imported beer Murphys Irish Stout from Murphy Brewery Ireland Unlimited - which is owned by Heineken.
It is an Irish Stout with 4.0% ABV and it is brewed in Cork Ireland.
Murphys is closely related to Guinness the most famous Irish Stout in the world.
There is a nitrogen widget in the bottom of the can that offsets a lack of carbonation in the beer and provides a creamy, thick head when pouring.
Murphys grain bill contains roasted barley, pale malt and chocolate malt.
    What is chocolate malt?
The chocolate malt is what gives most stouts their dark color and Murphys gives it credit for adding hints of coffee, caramel and slightly roasted flavors to its beer.
Chocolate Malt is malted barley that has been dried at a high temperature. It does not taste chocolaty. It is named for the deep brown color of the roasted malt.
    Scott, who drinks Murphys?
Scott: I think its a wide variety of people that drink Murphys. You mentioned that it had 4.0% ABV and that is on the low end. It really shows in the beer itself. It has a bitter, kind of, chocolaty balanced taste, but the alcohol is almost unpronounced in the beer itself. So, young drinkers could probably drink this if theyre looking for something new and exciting.
James: Ok. Hey Joby, does the mouthfeel match the head? I mean the creaminess that you see in the head?
Joby: Id say no. The mouthfeel is pretty thin once you get it into your mouth. Whereas the head is thick and creamy. Its a sustainable head, you can see in our glasses we still have a bunch of head in the glass. And even down to the final sip the head is still around.
James: What flavors or aromas are we experiencing here?
Adam: I got the lingering malted flavor, again the chocolatey flavor and a little bit of coffee. I consider this since Im lactose intolerant, this is my chocolate milk right here. This is what I enjoy all the time.
James: Scott, does this beer work for you?
Scott: It works for me for one beer. Id probably drink it with some fish and chips in a bar just hanging out with some friends, but I wouldnt go overboard and drink a bunch of them. It has so much bitter coffee taste that it just kind of throws me a little bit. Its okay. I would drink it. I would probably give it a six.
James: You dont see it as an exceptional beer?
Scott: No. I like stouts. I like Guinness, but its just not quite there for me. I dont know. The mouthfeel is a little off. Its a little thinner than Guinness. Its just not anything that excites me for some reason. Maybe its just today.
    James: Joseph?
Joby: Well, as scott was saying, hes kind of comparing it to Guinness. Its hard not to compare this beer to Guinness. When you think dark stout, you think Guinness right off the bat. If I had a Guinness in front of me Im not sure if I could tell the difference. So, Id like to do this. Id like to challenge you America. Get a Murphys. Get a Guinness. Drink them both. Blind taste test. See if you can tell the difference. For me James, I rate it an eight.
    James: An eight. Great. Adam?
Adam: I love this beer. Im a stout drinker. I like drinking this beer. I think we had one of our cameramen Frase he said that this could be a meal replacement shake for lunch. I agree with him. I would drink this anytime of the day. Id pour this over cereal. Id drink it anytime of the day. I give it a nine.
James: That gives Murphys Irish Stout a (???) on the BBA Scale. Head to you local pub, try it and let us know if this is your favorite stout.
AND Let us know what you think of the show. Whether you love it or hate it we need to hear the truth so we can keep improving. The comment section is waiting below.
Thanks for watching. Dont forget to subscribe. Im James Knott and this is YOUR Better Beer Authority."

This is an excellent thirst quencher. There are two things other than water that serve this purpose. Gatorade, and Murphy's stout. After mowing the yard in August, Murphy's is a real treat. Also perfect with spicy foods. The only problem is, it's a 'chug-able' stout which also tends to make the lower ABV, part of a good design because, if you are really thirsty, you can destroy 3 or 4 of these in a hurry. If one is tired of trying to inflict or perceive a profound experience from everything they eat or drink, this stout serves as a great 'utility' beverage. When I was in Ireland, I leaned towards the Murphy's more than Guinness. I keep two 10 packs on hand at all times. I just wish it was more readily available. The only place near me that carries it is Total Wine.

This American loves Murphy's Stout. I prefer it over Guinness and Beamish in the can. First let me explain that of American beers, I only go with craft beers from brewers such as Sierra Nevada, which in my view is better than anything coming out of Germany, Holland, Ireland, or the U.K with the exception of pub stouts. So to our Irish and Brit beer buddies, don't know American beer or those of us who appreciate them, until you've tried them.
I give Murphy's a 93% grade for stouts which is an A, and James tell your buddy to the right that if he doesn't really like stouts then don't judge them. One last thought Murphy's is also a low alcohol beer that's perfect for Saint Patrick's day pubing!

@dorf68 sort of. I bought the first couple of beers, but we are all having fun with it, so everyone is taking turns bringing beer for the group. Thanks to Hayes on Camera 1 for bringing the Murphy's.

Big props to Adam. I'm a Murphy's drinker. I live in Cork, Ireland where it's brewed. It's harder to find further up the country so I settle for Guinness instead. I go drinking every weekend and I always drink Murphy's. It's a lovely smooth tasting drink. Really nice. Adam has taste.

It's not bitter as in hoppy bitter, but stouts have a roasted bitterness to them. This is pretty light for a stout, but that's how Irish Dry Stouts are designed.

@mrphmcpat Thanks for the feedback. I recently had some really good Guinness in the pressurized bottles. That's the only way I think I'll drink it now. I've had two bad Guinesses in a row at bars on tap. It was probably dirty taps or old kegs, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I preferred the bottled Guinness to the Murphy's in this review.

@EmeraldIsleStar Guinness Draught in the U.S. is 4.2 percent alcohol by volume. Murphy's Irish Stout is 4.0% alcohol by volume. That is is not a significant difference that would lead to getting significantly more drunk. Guinness Extra Stout is 6.0 percent ABV and that is more concentrated, but that is not comparing apples to apples.

I'd have to save after having both back to back, I prefer Murphys. It seems less bitter and more flavorful than Guinness. However I will say these two stouts were tried from the draught cans and not on tap. We can only get Guinness on tap here. For what it is Murphys does it better it seems. Its hard to beat a real draught stout so that is where the real challenge lies. Thanks for the review.

  • @GenPhilips

I love stout's and this takes guiness for me. I love both but if I had to choose I would pick Murphy's. I like the head alot more on the Murphy's the taste is really close to Guiness but I actually like the light body, or as some people have said it's a tad watery. To me that's not really a bad thing. It gives it a easier drinkability and less filling so you can drink more. Who doesn't like that !

Coming from an Irishman myself (Cork of course) or in other words the real capital!! I couldn't highly enough recommend Beamish as being the best stout in Ireland simply due to its lighter and more creamy flavour with Murphys coming second and Guinness in third place.

Yeah. I'm a big fan of stouts and porters. A 4 pack of guinness goes for about $1 more than murphy's, and the cans are only 14 ounces. Something about murphy's just keeps me coming back as opposed to guinness. I wish i could find Beamish!

I would have to go with Murphy's Irish Stout over Guinness for a Dry Stout style beer. I don't know what it is but it so good and easy to drink. I've had both companies beers and I have to say the Guinness was a bit thinner, but the Murphy's has more of the aroma Charcter with Coffee and Chocolate which I love. I'm to point I buy a keg of Murphy's because of the nice creamy head. Overall both beer will be identical blind folded. Guinness just knew how to market their product in 1935 which cause them to book like crazy. In a way they are the Macallan of Beer. I'm not saying Guinness is bad it's just that Murphy's is an underdog and is better priced.

When it comes to mass produced stouts, I would take Guinness over this any day of the week. Both of these beers are very "one note". There is no subtlety; the flavor you get when the beer first hits your tung, is the same flavor you get when you swallow. However, with Guinness the one flavor you get is much richer, and deeper. I also think Guinness has a better head.
