- This is the final episode of the Better Beer Authority - although there is a plan to keep the community going! For the last blind taste test I wanted to do something epic and I think I found it. Beer geeks go nuts for this beer from Three Floyds, which is one of the top breweries in the world. Dark Lord is only sold one day a year and you need to have a ticket to buy it. It has a cult following and is really hard to track down. The Better Beer Authority has a reputation of not always following the crowd. What will they think of this? Is it worth the hassle? Partial Transcript: "Hi. I'm James Knott and this is the final regular episode of the Better Beer Authority. Today we are drinking a special beer, a hard-to-get beer, a beer geek's beer -- Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout from the Three Floyds Brewing Company in Munster, Indiana.
This is one of the most sought-out beers in the United States. It is only for sale one day a year -- Dark Lord Day. You have to have a ticket with a valid ID to enter the brewery to purchase your bottles. I didn't have that, so I had to trade away half my beer cellar for two bottles -- doh!
Beeradvocate says it is 15% ABV and the brewery describes it like this:
"A demonic Russian Imperial Stout, brewed with Intelligensia coffee, Mexican vanilla and Indian sugar. This beer defies description."
There is a lot of hype with this beer, but unlike most reviews, this review will be blind so we can see if this beer is worthy of the expense and the hassle.
Let the final blind taste test begin."
So long, BBA. Without you, I'd never have known what craft beer was, much less refined and expanded my palate with all that the world of craft beers has to offer. Hell, without you I probably wouldn't drink beer at all.
You'll always be remembered, and of course I wish you guys luck in everything you do from here on out. Thanks for the memories, and thanks for changing beer for me forever.

Hands down the best beer show on youtube. It's actually strange how much entertainment can be derived from watching four friends drink and talk about beer, but you guys really did something special with BBA. Thanks to everyone involved for making such a great beer show, you guys rock!!!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Goodbyes can be difficult, but sometimes its just time to go. The Better Beer Authority has been a great experience and I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Can't believe this is finally being posted! Feels like you guys filmed this one forever ago. What a crazy, awesome evening too. Thanks so much for giving me the chance to try this James! Glad I don't have to worry about seeking this bucket list beer out anymore. After having this I would agree with you guys that it's overhyped. I will say the 2008 I had was very, very enjoyable, but you shouldn't have to age a beer that long to make it worthwhile. You guys stayed honest to the end! It's funny because Three Floyds makes some of my favorite beers, but not this. Great way to end the reviewing James!! Thanks again and good luck with your biking blog!! Cheers guys!!
I was just going though some old beer reviews because it doesn't seem the quity is there as it was before but I truly miss the old review and this channel for sure. Maybe one day one more for old time sake thanks for not taking these down great memories cheers

I hope you guys do a get together every now and then. Once BBA started doing blind taste tests your show was 10x better. It is really true that beer geeks or snobs see a beer and act like it is the best thing ever just because others say it is.

Totally agree, so glad I went to DLD on a general admin ticket and didn't have to deal with the bottle b.s. and pay $80/for $40 with of diabeetus.

Thanks man, I was there, but not on the panel since we wanted the original guys there for the final review. My hands are the ones opening and pouring the beer though. I put it at a 6, too sweet for my taste, many of my thoughts were along the same lines of the other guys that talked about it being too cloying to truly enjoy. Many much more enjoyable beers from FFF that are WAY easier to get a hold of. And if you're looking for big tasty stouts, we've reviewed WAY better ones too.
The fun part about Dark Lord day from what I have been told is that it is almost like a beer festival. I was told this year there were kegs of Cigar City Hunupha's, KBS, and other top notch beers as well as live bands performing all day. So in that respect, DL Day would be great to go to.

As a guy who has been to the last 3 dark lord days and tried a bunch of dark lord vintages it seems that each variant gets worse and worse. 2013 was like a hot sugary soy sauce mess. I cracked a 2010 last year and it was fantastic so I dont know what FFF is doing. They can pee in a bottle charge $50 for it and everybody would still line up for it. Ill be at DLD this Saturday so hopefully 2014 batch is better.
There's somebody in each of these men's lives who thinks that they are the most knowledgeable men they know when it comes to beer.
Maybe they didn't drink it at room temp?
I agree with the review 100%. Dark Lord is very overrated and I don't know why you'd drive to the brewery to buy it when you can get stuff like KBS and BA Plead the 5th and Bourbon County from a nearby store.
Dark Lord Day's a metal head's dream. That's why.
Its McRib-esq. Not the best thing in the world but still better than other things. And pretty good overall. Is it over hyped? Yes. Is it bc people love the reverence of a Limited supply? I do think so. Its a 8/10 for me. But not a 10.
There are a lot of over rated Imperial Stouts and very few have been what I would call excellent or worth the money.

A great beer to go out on James. I learned a long time ago that this beer wasn't very good. All the hype came from the earlier years of it when people said it was amazing. I almost had to drain pour a taste of last year's batch. It's just not a good beer and the worst beer FFF make.
is the barrel aged version worth what people usually ask for it?
mcdougal trevor The barrel aged versions are much better but cost $50. Not really worth it for them either.
That beer looks really thick.
You have to let this beer age for several years. There is a ton going on with it. It's a ~15% ABV beer that hasn't been aged or placed in barrels. Drinking it fresh isn't going to taste that great. Age it for several years and it's amazing. The BA variants are even better and obviously don't require quite as much aging.

Soy sauce...one of the worst beers ive ever had
On paper it sounds absolutely awesome. A coffee, vanilla Imperial stout? Hell yeah. But just like everything that 3 Floyds does, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overhyped and overrated to the point of nausea.
It's a monstrous mess of shit. I fucking love Imperial Stouts, Dark Lord is definitely the most disappointing beer I've ever had; it's just booze, booze, booze, ultra heavy dark fruits, no vanilla, no coffee, sweet crap. Bomb! from Prairie is such a better alternative, in my opinion, even though it's slightly different with the additional peppers to it.
Would I try one of the variants, yeah, sure, but I'm not paying $300-$1,000 for the goddamn thing on the secondary market and I have quite the animosity towards 3 Floyds in general so I'm not going up to see their brewery for Dark Lord day.
Crack the Skye is pretty much the only beer from 3 Floyds that I'll actually say extremely good things of. It's a fantastic coffee stout that goes for a noble cause; suicide awareness.
