Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- Just about every beer drinker in America is familiar with Pabst Blue Ribbon. The brewery has been around since 1844. After years of decline, Pabst grew sales through a below-the-radar marketing campaign that appealed to anti-establishment, urban hipsters. Is this beer worth the new found hype? Is this a working man's beer? Does this beer hit the spot with the Better Beer Authority panel? Tune in and find out!

"On Tap -- Pabst Blue Ribbon
Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. First, thanks to Rocky & Jessie for wearing their Better Beer Authority T-shirts to the Tennessee Cigar & Brew Fest. Shirts are for sale on our website and if you send me a picture of you in your shirt I will feature it on the show.
Now on with the review... "Heinekin, Fuck that Shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!" says Dennis Hopper in the movie Blue Velvet. Pabst -- once the beer of your grandfather, now the beer of your hipster neighbor.
The Pabst Brewing Company was founded by Jacob Best in 1844. It was founded in Milwaukee, WI, then moved to Woodridge, IL and recently announced that they are moving the headquarters to Los Angeles.
Pabst Blue Ribbon has 4.7 percent ABV and 144 calories per 12 oz bottle. It is brewed under contract at several locations around the country with the help of MillerCoors.
It is an American Adjunct Lager that uses Corn Syrup as it's adjunct ingredient.
Q&A
Pabst Blue Ribbon gets a (???) on the BBA Scale. What is your favorite discount lager? Do you think this beer is cool and hip or not so much? Let us know in the comment section. Be cool -- buy a T-shirt like Rocky did. Thanks for watching. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority!"
@khunopie I like your play on words.
Thnx for the review!! This Miller High Life and Rolliing Rock were my fave macrobrews in the 80s! Have a great 4th of July too!
@brandon0409 Got it. Thanks for the explanation. I would hate for you to miss out on some of the tasty imported beers.
My favorite beer
Have you had Yuengling? I think their porter or black n tan are a "good bang for your buck" beer.
You are quite the Old Style expert!
Great review to style for an AAL, nice!
Thanks. We like your comments.
@brandon0409 I thought that was odd too. That's why I pointed it out.
Love the bucks hat! Also, hanging out in Morrill tower, drinking PBR, watching the basketball tournament. best. day. ever.
@AgileHProductions Union trouble. So, they solved that issue by outsourcing. It's more efficient, anyway.
That picture is priceless lol. Vintage beer ads are the best.
I think I need to do a blind taste test with this and some other macros. People keep telling me that it tastes better, but I think it would blend in amongst other similar adjunct lagers.
@wildbilltexas When I'm in Texas I'm drinking Shiner.
Yep, I live in Ohio. It's available in most package stores in Columbus, and available in the rest on special order. Shout out to Blacklick Wine and Spirits on the East Side.
thanks for the review... excellent show!!!
@gez1308 I need to catch a replay of that.
@pizzaman123 You have to remember that when we started the show none of us had any beer experience. Our mission wasn't to promote craft beer. It was to talk about all different beers whether we liked them or not. However, in the course of trying all these beers we've discovered tons of craft beers that we love and our tastes have changed a lot. And, we've turned a lot of fizzy, yellow beer drinkers into craft beer drinkers because they like our laid-back unpretentious approach.
That's a good way to put it.
@40ozkingcobra Not King Cobra?
You can only get it through Superior Beverage Group, which is in Columbus, Cleveland and Mansfield. They are the only ones that sell it. They sell it in 24 pack of bottles for around $20.
@HeyJoeHaze Yeah. I think it has. It's not the cheapo beer it once was. The hipsters raised the demand for the product.
I loved sipping beer as a toddler! I think P.B.R. is one of the better beers, as per American-style lager.
@CraigKramer No worries. I hope you will continue to watch. We have come a long way in our beer journey, but still have a long way to go.
good review guys.
Great for what it is. I would def. pick this up over Coors, Bud, Molson ect.
By the way NEWARK has the water. Ballantine, Kruegar, Pabst, Budweiser, Fiegenspan, Hensler to name a few were / are brewed there. Rheingold a NY beer, moved to nearby Orange , NJ and Trommers in Harrison, NJ, same water.
I agree with your assessment. However, I did pick up Pabst as a cheap session beer last weekend. Does that make me a hypocrite?
What about underwater? Is it great underwater?
There has definitely been a resurgence of people who appreciate this fine beer.
drank 9 of these last night. woke up feeling fresh.I love it
Of the ones that you mentioned I would probably go with a fosters.
Yuengling is big in Ohio these days. It's only been here about a year.
The comment about his first drink from his dad, the exact thing happened to me. Thanks for reminding me. Blue Ribbon!
This is the best BBA episode
I enjoy Tripels and Stouts. I love the Chimay and Allagash Tripels, and really enjoy Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Founders Breakfast Stout, and Smiths Oatmeal. Great Divide imperial is great as well.
It's not a time or place beer, it's a "how many quarters can you find in the couch" beer. I say that with super love for PBR.
PBR is pretty good if you ask me. It's pretty crisp and for it's price it's got plenty of flavor and drink ability for me personally. I've got to give it a 6 myself, even though the other guys I review with gave it 8s. I just can't give it an 8 myself though.
@ilovefastcars89 I drank a lot of Schlitz in college - mainly because it was cheap.
@WehrmachtLuftwaffe I agree. People should drink what they like and not worry about what other people like. I only brought up the hipster thing because that is an important part of the resurgence of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
@ronaldtheriot It had a decent taste. I wish they hadn't closed their brewery though. It makes them lose a little street cred.
Why not? We do all sorts of beers from the best in the world to the worst. I think doing varying qualities of beer helps keep it all in perspective. Drinking a bad beer every now and then makes the good beers seem extra good.
@StumpyJoeJr I'll have to go check out the latest South Park episode. Was it about PBR?
Plus, the price is going up. It's not as cheap as it used to be.
There is a bar in town that sells this beer for $.50 on Monday nights, $2.50 for a pitcher. So awesome.
Plus this beer is WAY better than almost every other American Lager.
I prefer drinking most beers out of a bottle over a can. A good beer is best in a glass though where you can appreciate the aroma.
Yeah, I like it. I bought an 18 pack for 11 bucks earlier tonight. Budweiser is 15 bucks for an 18 pack at the same store! (Walmart in FL.) It just hurts to pay that price for an 18 pack when there's another beer on the shelf that I like just as much as the other one.
@257milo Rating by style is definitely one way to go. We don't have enough experience to do that very well.
best beer cheap and delicious every day pbr
Closer than Bud Light?
I haven't seen that in the store for a while. I wonder if it's still sold in Ohio.
Sounds like a party in a box.
good beer....
Pabst did an underground marketing campaign with bicycle messengers that helped it become popular at bars that were popular amongst the alt-culture crowd.
By far my favorite adjunct. I haven't tried Fosters, Rolling Rock, Red Stripe etc. mind you, but thus far PBR is my adjunct of choice.
You can't get a 30 rack of PBR in Chicago for 11.99 all day and night.
On a sale sometimes you can find it for 9.99
"Well it was better than this pour." Had me rolling.
@SNQHShow Excellent comment! Keep them coming!
@hctimhtims Just one of many reasons for its awesomeness.
I think where everyone in America lives is mostly Bud and Miller. They sell a lot of beer.
@plainoldstickfight Most of them do if you drink enough.
@CraigKramer Are you a big Chimay fan? You seem to have taken that one really personally. I think Chef may have been a little off on that one, but he is not a bad person.
I was only a math minor. I guess you are my superior. Forrier (sp?) Analysis Using Partial Differentiation helped me decide to stop with a minor. I dropped the class. I had no interest in it. But, I do love most math.
yum gotta love corn syrup beer
If your on budget and like to get a good buzz after work definitely go with this beer.
@XtianFreak I need to check that out. Was PBR a big part of it?
Its getting there.
Rolling Rock is a pretty good AAL. It's cheaper than bottled water and doesn't have any off putting taste to it and is quite pleasant and very drinkable for an AAL. If I had the option, I'd choose a Boston Lager over any AAL, but for my money, Rolling Rock is my AAL of choice.
@WiiAreSIN A lot of people agree with you.
I live in Kalamazoo so I'm partial to Bell's. I also like almost anything from Sam Adams and Heineken. If I'm short on cash I'll drink anything
Hay mark were did you get that hat
It fucking awesome
Best cheap beer of all time.
I am a big fan of Pabst Blue Ribbon, I have been drinking it since I was a youngin. When it comes to a cheap and GOOD lager. Pabst is the way to go!
@spewintothis I don't crave Pabst these days, but I would never turn one down - wait - I never turn any beer down.
I like Pabst. For what it is, it deserves a better rating than Bud.
Whatever happened to Olympia beer blast from the past but was good
great review. Host looks hammered.
Ya guessing he wasn't drinking PBR hahha or any other watered down beer
A lot of beer drinkers like to see the head of a beer. It's not a good or a bad thing. It's a personal preference thing.
Are you talking about playing Duck Hunt on the original Nintendo? That's usually where I spill my Pabst.
@Cowboylikeme I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I wouldn't turn it down either.
Review Earthquake High Gravity Lager.
(can't wait to see that one...)
I prefer my high fructose corn syrup in Twinkie form.
You can't please everyone. They did say in another show that they would take PBR over Chimay Blue. That made a lot of beer nerds mad.
I just bought a 12 pack of PBR for $7.99. Very smooth, very drinkable. I'll take a PBR over Bud, Coors, or Miller any time.
@albedo0point39 Shipped from Germany? That's dedication. This is just a so-so beer, but it is a decent session beer for a tailgate or something like that. Do you "tailgate" in the UK?
What is wrong with the pour? Even the "experts" don't agree on how to pour. Also, pouring etiquette can vary by style and brand. Give us some advice.
My favorite beer... FREE BEER!
After watching the review it makes sense to rate beer in categories or styles. But how to fit this in your format this late in the game? Very good review overall! My go to is Yuengling Black and Tan.
Is that ABV or ABW? The numbers are different.
brewed with water from the Los Angels river.
I like PBR.... not on a daily basis, but every now and then I will drink it.
god I miss this show.
It looks like you also type while you drink it. :)
Good beer
Most people on beeradvocate hate Anheuser Busch. Budweiser does not get a fair assessment on their because it is not a blind taste test. Everyone has their own opinion, so it's fine if you disagree with me, but I challenge you to do a blind taste test of PBR vs. Budweiser (not bud light) and see how it turns out. PBR has closed all of its brewing facilites and moved its HQ to LA. It's just as much of a corporate behemoth as AB InBev. It's just not as good at being a corporate giant.
I couldn't agree with you more. That's why you won't hear me demonize people who like to drink American adjunct lagers
Thanks! What are some of your other favorites?
@FTWbiology I was surprised that they knew what skinny jeans were. They must get out more than I do.
@AgileHProductions That's probably a tie between warsteiner and lienenkugel original. I know those aren't really expensive but they are like 7 or 8$ for a six pack by me where as PBR is like 12 or 13$ for a case of 30.
Are we talking about the ABV? Sometimes ABV and ABW get mixed up. Are you sure you are talking about ABV and not ABW?
