Thanks for the coverage and all the kind words! Made my day :)
Maybe I should make an IL for you then.
    Here are a few remarks:
Stronger bow: Well, a 70 pound compound bow usually outperforms a 100 pound longbow and going any higher seems pointless. Having said that, Joe Gibbs (who can pull really heavy longbows) said he will send a 160 lb longbow to me and I will make an IL for that one. I can probably not draw it out in full, but Joe can and I can't wait to hear what he thinks of it. In any case, heavy bows are exhausting and it takes time to operate them. Therefore the IL is most effective on a lighter bow and shorter distances, also as "tent defense" as you can hang it to your main pole fully ready for action.
Longer arrows: The IL can handle any arrow length, but as a difference to normal bows there is no minimum length. I am using those short 15" bolts as they already only have two vanes and are truly affordable. Yet you can make them as heavy as normal arrow simply by using a heavier tip. BUT I am currently experimenting with really short bolts, and I think that they can be just as accurate as long arrows. In fact they are less sensitive to side wind. Maybe our common assumption ("longer is more accurate") was wrong all the time. Thinking outside of the box, as you said. Short bolts (under 12 cm) are so much more compact.
Side: The IL can be attached to either side and I made both types. Just if you have a bow with a recess for the arrow rest (right of left handed bows), that settles the question as you need to attach it to the "open" side of the riser. I like the left side though as you can then add aiming devices, such as open sights or red dots. Hard to see through them if they are on the right side of it.
Magazine/clips: Everybody wants them and I have already made clips for faster reloading. This works but I am not a big fan. Such magazines tend to be clumsy. I think of the ILs as the 12 gauge pump gun of the archery world. Pump guns have no clips either (usually). Now with the new super short but heavy bolts, maybe I can make the AR-15 of the archery world... that one would HAVE to have high capacity exchangeable magazines.
Larger mags: My current gen 10 IL has 7 shots. It is not hard to make the mag as big as you want the thing gets very boxy at some point. My largest mag holds 35 arrows... and is fully automatic, powered by a battery drill.
That was it! Did I forget something? Probably. Let me know.
Thanks again and greetings from Southern Hessia
    Jörg

@@pRahvi0 The main reason arrows are the length they are is the length of the human arm. When you draw to your chin/ear/cheek/whatever, it is a stable and reproduceable draw, and the arrow need to be long enough to rest against the bow so you don't shoot yourself in the hand. I did it once, trying to use shorter arrows than I needed, thank goodness they were only target tips! - With a crossbow, the bolt can be shorter as long as it has good flight qualities, because the stock holds the bow instead of your hand, and there is a surface along which the bolt is guided. There is sometimes even a spring or clip to hold the bolt in place, so no hands are at risk.

More like a mad bowmaker/inventor and merchant that the characters chance upon and are able to get a really good bow from.
Was a general weapon merchant a thing I wonder? seems to me a smith would make swords and other melee weapons while making bows was another profession entirely, so a weapons merchant would have to be someone who bought weapons from other people and sold them for more money, making their goods more expensive than simply going to where the weapons are produced in the first place. Unless of course blacksmiths and bowmakers didn´t sell their goods in that way because they wanted to make more instead of selling them since selling them to customers one by one takes a lot more time than making a contract with a weapons merchant.

soldiers who were using early firearms such as muzzle loaders while holding a defensive position, it was not uncommon to have someone that shoots and another person that would reload. This would lower the total balls going donwrange at any point in time but greatly decreased the downtime between shots.
Assuming you have a good marksmen shooting, you could have an unskilled person simply reloading.

I have to point out though that you wouldn't have someone "unskilled" reload any kind of muzzle loader, outside of lowering your rate of fire because it takes experience to reload those things even remotely quickly and second, it would be a recipe for desaster. Making a mistake reloading a muzzle loader can easily cost you a finger (and that's if you are cautious enough to make the barrel point away from anyone, otherwise it could lead to a lethal accident). As a matter of fact, the skill of early gunmen often was measured in regards to how quickly they could shoot rather than how precisely, notably because those weapons were inherently inaccurate anyways.

That same base idea is actually still used to this day but with guns.
Look up talking guns. It's the practice of two or more usually lmg but can be other types, and one will fire say half his mag then the other guy fires half then the first guy fires his second half and reloads as the second guy shoots his second half.
It helps overheat issues, being the primary target too long, and ensures there's always rounds going down range.
Also fun fact, this like many other things are simply inventions of long ago, just using modern stuff to make it better, look at the oldest cannons and guns, and look at the civil war grapeshot.
Tanks, grenades(a particular flashbang with hard rubber balls in it called hornets nest I believe) and even rounds for the rail gun are doing the same thing right now... Just a bunch of balls in a container propelled at high speed to deal high damage in a wide path, But now it's tungsten or something similar.

@@darthplagueis13 Believe it or not there were some pretty stupid people behind those at times. Ever see a civil war soldier in uniform? See those little brown bags on his waist only a few inches apart from each other?
Yeah... Those were both wonderful and terrible, those are bags of black powder, they are filled to the exact amount of powder you need for a single shot.
However... Two big issues with them were 1.many times in the heat of combat some dipshit would end up pouring multiple bags in and boom goes the gun, and the guy.
And 2.if by any chance the shooter or one next to him fell down and fired or otherwise in any fashion managed to get an ignition source close to those bags.. Well second verse same as the first basically, only with a higher chance of being engulfed in flames as opposed to an actual explosion, depending on many factors that is.
So yes to sum it up... You can't always just pick the best of the best. Hell you can't do that now... If you could literally the entire military would just be navy seals, green berets and the like...which actually sounds nasty in an awesome way if you ask me.. But alas impossible.

I'd thought of this years ago, w*rking on a Birthright style fantasy wargame with friends. I used it with crossbows, mind you, but...
Have an archery team set up with a few buckets o' bolts, a large shield or two for counterfire, and have your 'trained' archer fire one bow while the other two are being reloaded by two peasants who would switch off the windlass duty. Rate of (accurate) fire would be higher, and the cost of peasants was minimal. More people to feed, but...
Only recently started thinking about how modern techniques might have been allowable in fantasy settings, and came up with 'failed' mage apprentices (for whatever reason: Lack of magical talent, loss of city holding the academy, kicked out for misdemeanors, etc.) who need to support themselves, and are not allowed to use their magical talents by law (not full mages or whatever). Using higher 'magical' ideas, what could change? New smelting ideas, alloys, the whole idea of compound bows, manufacturing processes, etc.. I'm writing a story about a shapeshifter at the moment, but after this...?

Speaking of clips, there is a kind of similar technique used to fill rifle magazines. Ammo comes in tens on some kind of rail, add a small plastic between the rail and the magazine to align the properly and you just have to push the ammo down inside. It is sometimes tricky because you have to push against the spring, but in the instant Legolas' case there would be no opposing force to cause resistance and the arrows would come in aligned, in the correct number. You would gain precious time having a batch ready at one instead of having to draw them one by one from the quiver, and more importantly in the heat of battle, with stress or sweaty fingers, you would only have to set the clip in the correct position once instead of fumbling through the process for every arrow.

Sure, they give up the advantage of insane fire rate and better accuracy, but once the enemy is out of arrows, them still having any long range capability is a huge advantage in itself.

Funny thing, your "removable clip" idea is a well-known and thoroughly developed idea in the firearms world. Late 19th and early 20th century bolt action rifles (particularly military use ones) often use what's called a "stripper clip", which is a line of bullet cartridges clipped onto a short strip of sheet metal that lines up with guides on the firearm. The cartridges are secured because the edges of the stripper clip are bent around into rails that insert into the rim of the cartridge on each side.
You line the stripper clip up with the guides, push the cartridges down into the internal magazine, and discard the stripper clip itself in a single motion that's a lot faster than individually loading 6-8 rounds.

Really Jeorg has engineered the bow from a basic to a more advanced weapon system. And to answer the question as to why this wasn't used in medieval times... I think Jeorg kind of answered the question with how quickly he cranked out multiple versions using different mechanisms, tolerances, and arrow lengths. Arming an army with these weapons systems would have required a standardized product, system of production, and training dozens of people in producing the bows, arrows, and Legolas devices and parts. The early and middle ages weren't like modern times where you can jump on Skill Share and find people teaching skills. Back then, artisan skills like woodworking, smithing, masonry, etc... were passed down father to son, and the skills and techniques were NOT often shared between weapon makers for obvious financial reasons.

First it would allow an army to do a much more efficient staggered fire with much less practice and a lot faster volleys, with much less practice, you wouldn’t need as many archers and the less practice is very good considering army’s were made largely of slightly trained people from sounding villages

Also with Lars we only see his successes we don't see how many times he misses a trick
I'm not nocking Lars, his shooting is impressive and he has put in a lot of work to developing his skills, the issue is repeating those skills at a lethal poundage, he shoots around a 15# bow. We've seen that 160# bow can't penetrate plate but can penetrate mail since the primary target on an opponent is center mass the bow is question would need to be of a high enough poundage to penetrate standard chest armor. If you go take a lesson at your local range you will see that a 15-20# bow doesn't have the energy to be viable.

    • @kelleren4840
      @kelleren4840 4 роки тому

@@Debbiebabe69 Sure. And it would also be great if you could just train up every man woman and child to be a fully fledged knight with heavy plate armor and...and...and... but that's ignoring real, practical constraints on that type of thing.
The very fact it takes years of training to be proficient with a Warbow means there will ALWAYS be a limited number of archers (or knights, for similar reasons). Hence a contraption that could easily turn someone without years of training into someone quite proficient with a warbow, and likewise boost the firing rate of a veteran archer.... would absolutely be a huge game changer.
One of the big constraints on mass producing plate armor was exactly that... you couldn't mass produce it. Saying the instant legolas wouldn't have had an enormous influence on ranged warfare is like saying a modern steel plant wouldn't increase armor production, or the printing press wouldn't increase book publication.
The instant legolas would both reduce the learning curve for archers an enormous amount and grant trained archers (especially with loaders) an astronomical advantage over anyone without that same technology.

in formations the loading of arrows could be staggered. Half the guys load while the other half pump arrows in the sky.
Because of the slideing and locking mechnism, the muzzle could be set on the ground and the bow arm stepped on to cock it.

On the point about clips, both types you describe exist in the firearms world, they're known as "en-bloc" clips and "stripper" clips. Both are used to load ammunition into an integral magazine, the en-bloc clip is loaded as a complete unit, functions as the feed lips for the magazine, and is ejected when the last round is either loaded into the chamber or fired, depending on the rifle. The classic example of the en-bloc clip feeding system is the M1 Garand. Stripper clips are used to hold ammo in a convenient packet for loading, but are not loaded into the magazine as a complete unit, the firearm will have a stripper clip guide that the clip is placed into, then the rounds are pushed off the clip and into the magazine. The stripper system is common on many rifles including the Lee Enfield, SKS, Mosin Nagant, and Mauser pattern rifles.

It also wasn't very good, which is why we don't see it used much in real life: faster shots mean little if you run out of ammo in 10 minutes, and a field army just can't carry enough weight with it to make up for the ammo loss. As such, it's better to have a weapon that shoots slower but farther, and is as uncomplicated as possible so it's easier to fix. On the defense, such a weapon has more value: manpower is much more of a limiter than the equipment, so you can expend way arrows and bolts purely as discouragement so the enemy is forced into an expensive and exhausting siege.
