Mine do it every day when I practise this specific passage, with double stops and I have to switch to no string. My ears are crying. At some point I actually started crying because I was desperate and still don't completely understand why it starts to whistle.
Very easy method: Let *Ling Ling* plays and so on :-0
Ling Ling never has this problem since he doesn't need an E sting.

Get the PIRASTRO EUDOXA (comes in yellow packet) E string which does not whistle. Was suggested by my violin tutor
It's even better when u add alot of weight and go as sloooww as possible and just listen to the high pitched screaming of actual nails on chalkboard and the grinding of tectonic plates.
This is why I don't regret choosing the cello

I've played viola for years and my strings have never whistled that bad.
Its actually much more common on violins due to that high e string. Viola strings are thicker and wont squeak as easily
To all triggered violists: it was a joke. Obviously it's more common on violin. But why admit that, when you can just blame the violists?
That being said, I'm advocating for fairness. I blame the piccolo.
I blame the piccolos or flutes, since I am a violist

Neither does the A, actually; I’ve only had that problem on violin.

Evelyn Sanchez, I am not really sure. Maybe it's your bow technique? I have the same problem. I honestly don't know either. Try bowing straighter... If that makes sense. :)

My contact point is good and I bow straight and not straight and still, but now always though😢😢😂
The worse is when you are sooo confident and BAM 😤😂 And nothing happens in class.
I think it involves many factors, good bow technique definitely only somehow reduces the odds of it happening, it does not solve it in itself.
I also observed that sometimes left hand is involved as some part of the palm slightly touches the E string.
But in my experience the most important two factors (appart from context=preceding notes/chord) are the instrument itself and the E string. Some violin/string combinations are more prone to the problem.
In which case easiest is to experiment a bit with different kind of E strings..

It doesn't happen very often to me either but I think it's just a harmonic (from the bow) on the E string
