  • In this video I show you how to apply regular baby shampoo to the lawn to act as a soil conditioner. The shampoo contains surfactants that will allow wetter to better penetrate into the soil.

      @LonghornsLegend 2 роки тому +1

      @@steverupert6988 sure. Baby shampoo makes your lawn more water soluble and allows water to get deep to the roots which is more effective and also breaks up hard soil so you do that first and water it in. Hydretain needs wet grass to be applied first so you can apply immediately after, and the Hydretain gets attached to the roots a lot easier. They work hand in hand with drought and heat stress, and also making the most out of your watering schedule. I'm in Texas and it's been over 100 for months and my grass has able to stay dark green. If you want to go the extra mile, I add in some 'Revive' sold by home Depot or Amazon. Using all 3 together has been my summer secret for high temps

  • @Torpedomtb

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      It helps the water soak into the soil a little bit better. Not a miracle worker but I did a few experiments where it showed that the areas that I used it were growing better than the areas I did not. If you used it over and over it should help with compaction as well. I'm not sure by how much but some swear by it. I still prefer to core aerate for compaction.

    I don’t see any replies to many many questions here several years old. . .
    Kind of defeats the purpose of me asking a question about a sprayer that has a dial to select how many ounces, versus Ryan’s.
    It looks like that sprayer is direct, so I’m not sure how they compare.

    • @MrGatya2
      @MrGatya2 3 роки тому +1

      I don't think you need to worry about the dial. The dial sets the concentration of the stuff (X oz per gallon) it is important for pesticides that need specific concentration. Here you just need to calculate your spraying speed. Ex.: he put in 3 oz and water, so by the time the bottle finishes he hast to evenly spray the 1000 sqf. So if you set it to dilute a lot, then you spray slower (with more water) and if you dilute it less, then you would have to walk faster.

    • @mrmsbhvn
      @mrmsbhvn 2 роки тому

      @@MrGatya2 Normally the SOP is to maintain a pattern and speed while walking across the area for laying down the sprayed liquid.
      He puts 3 oz in water. . . . but how much water, probably (looks like) a quart.
      So if that is constant, but the concentration is set low, like 1 oz per gallon, that what will cover the soil, but if the dilution is set high, like 20 oz per gal, that is a crazy difference.
      Hence my question wondering the recommended spray setting

      I have a miracle grow sprayer as well that allows for how many ounces per, so I guess I just put the dish soap in the street and set it for 5 ounces per gallon or something.

    • @worldpeace5853
      @worldpeace5853 3 роки тому +1

      @@mrmsbhvn You don’t really need metrics as such for spraying shampoo as long as you have the ounces required. It’s a flat 3 ounces here. You need metrics to spray say humic acid, fertilome liquid iron etc since it specifically asks for a particular rate/sq feet as per their tested specs. Ortho displaces 2 gallons/minute and you need to adjust the dial as per your walking rate/1000 sq ft. Having said that I am curious to know if ortho dial can be used since it has a filter inside. I am wondering how it works with shampoo when it displaces the water mixed inside.

    • @mrmsbhvn
      @mrmsbhvn 3 роки тому

      @@worldpeace5853 I think I understand what you are saying; "metrics" =amount/quantity, so soap isn't significant as to the % put down same as products/chemicals. Gotcha, thx.
      As for the dial sprayers, well-mine doesn't fill with water as it sprays. It just venturi/siphons the cup/product up through a straw/hose, I think that the amount is set by changing the setting dial as to the amount.

    • @worldpeace5853
      @worldpeace5853 3 роки тому

      @@mrmsbhvn Yes. Say for example you need to spray humic acid via ortho dial spray at the rate of 6 Oz per 1000 sq ft. You put 6 ounces of humic acid and the rest water up to 26 ounces. The standard setting is to turn the dial to 8 Oz. Since the sprayer displaces water up to 2 Gallons/minute it now displaces 8 ounces x 2 gallons i.e 16 ounces of mixed solution per minute. You now have up to 2 minutes to spray the 32 ounces on the 1000 sq ft you in which 6 ounces of humic acid is already mixed. Walk at a medium to brisk pace. If it’s fast turn down settings and recalculate the time required.

      You want to run it as long as it takes to get about an inch of water on the lawn. That depends on a lot of factors but you can put out a rain gauge while using the sprinkler to figure it out. My backyard will still be showing stress even with an inch of water per week if it's super hot (it gets full sun all day long) so I try to spread it out a little bit more like a good soaking every few days or so.

    Hi Ryan, I shampoo my lawn using Jerry Baker
    recipe to make it green and I got reverse results. After few days I felt that my lawn started get yellow. When I investigated more carefully I found a layer stayed on soil, initially I thought it is a layer of fungus but later I found that is a layer of dried foam. Is it fine? Do you have any suggestion that how can I save my lawn? Here was my recipe :
    1 Cup of Baby Shampoo
    1 Cup CORN SYRUP
    1 Cup of Regular Cola
    1 Cup of Ammonia
    P.S.1 The current temperature is 70 in day but we had a two days around 87.
    P.S.2 I mow the lawn two day before I applied the tonic. (1/3)
    Thanks for your kind and prompt reply in advance.

      I'd just water it heavily with clean water and try that. I've only ever used shampoo by itself

      it works for this as well. you can spray it alone as well to be used as a soil conditioner

    So do you add the surfactant prior to adding something like tenacity? Is this in days? Or can you do both at the same time?

      You can add surfactant directly to the mix with tenacity

    Your lawn is looking great! We're hot and dry here in Michigan as well. Are you a fan of sun and shade or Kentucky blue? I ask because your color is looking rich during the current dry spell.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  8 років тому

      Color is not as good as it could be but it's hanging on...barely. Haha
      This grass here is 100% kentucky bluegrass and I like it but it takes a lot of maintenance (fertilizer, water, etc) I'm trying to decide about maybe changing my front and side yards to more of a turf type tall fescue since there is already some of it mixed in anyway.

    Can you use this in place of a liquid aeration product?

    • @jwang6230
      @jwang6230 4 роки тому +1

      Yes. It is probably a little more risky nobody knows the perfect amount to their lawn.
      The key ingredient in shampoo is sodium laurel sulfate, kind of like baking soda. It breaks down things leaving gaps between substances same as shampoo breaks down oil and few other substances on hair and scalp.
      Putting too much is obviously not a good thing for your lawn, you don't want to break up the grass roots, only the dirt. Same with your hair, if you shampoo too much or the shampoo is too strong for your baby or your head, it will cause dry scalp or have more hair falling off.
      That's why we use a milder form of shampoo like baby shampoo and especially use it at a 1% to 2% concentration or 1 - 2 ounce per gallon of water.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      I don't believe it will but if you wanted to let the grass come up a little bit and then use it you should be fine

    • @Danny19411
      @Danny19411 5 років тому

      Ok it looks like it didn’t hurt my seeds. I choose to chance it and spray anyway because my lawn was getting two wet because the soil wasn’t absorbing fast enough all the rain water we have been getting. So long story short my seeds are coming up nicely even after two applications of this a few days apart after I over seeded. It took a little longer for the grass to come up but I think it was due to us still having chilly temperatures here in the northwest.
