Marriage wasn't going to happen for two reasons: (1.) Son shared some sensitive info with girlfriend in the wire tapped room they were spending time in. Son wasn't aware room was tapped (2.) She's black. Go back to the scene when the deal between Matt and the other agent was happening, listen to what the other agent asked Matt about the race issue. @@bandpassmess actually that's not what the dollar deal was about. The dollar represents Matt Damon's character offering to make a deal with Ulysses's aide to be a mole for the CIA. The dollar move is symbolic but he's also speaking in code. If you watch the beginning part of the film and listen closely to this scene you'll pick it up.
I also think that Damon's character had the wife killed, not Ulysses. When Ulysses reveals the taped conversation he skips over the secret that she tells his son but implies she is telling him that she is a Russian spy. But in actuality she is revealing that she is pregnant. I doubt she was ever a Russian spy in the first place. I don't think Ulysses has any reason to have her killed, but he just provided Damon's character with a good reason to get her out of the picture.

The film takes place during the start of the Cold War when Russia and the USA are waging constant intelligence warfare. The Russians, in an effort to gain information on one of their major rivals, Edward, aka “Mother” (Matt Damon), have used a mole (the young black woman) to get close to Edward’s son. In the course of events she and Edward’s son fall in love and are to be married. Because of this she ceases cooperation with the Russians so she can have a life with Edward’s son. Since she is no longer of any use to the Russians, they inform Edward that his son’s fiancée is their spy. Presumably through the transaction of the snow globe, Edward consents/affirms he wants her killed. When Edward and his son are at the church and his son realizes something has happened, he basically is asking his father “did you have her killed?” Knowing he would lose his son if he told the truth, he lies to him. Edward has sacrificed and spent his life working to protect his country, and in the process has destroyed his own family.

James Stackhouse James I agree with you, no need for the animosity. There’s a lot of evil out intelligence agencies have committed, not in the interests of the US but for their globalist power broker masters. 9/11 was an inside job for one, and that’s not the first time “false flag” terror has been used to manipulate the ignorant US citizenry. I do however believe that in the context of THE FILM that Damon’s character believes he’s doing right in the service of his country, and it’s only later in his life he realizes what a pawn he was to his secret societies and his own manipulators. This is signified when he finally reads his father’s suicide letter.
