My home city. Used to pass Penny Lane every day for decades on the way to and from work. The shelter in the middle of the roundabout is still there. The banker would have worked at the Martins Bank on the opposite side of the road to the barbers (which is still there). That bank became Barclays Bank. The fire station was about 800 yards away on Mather Avenue.
One fact that goes unnoticed about the Beatles, is that they wrote and recorded hundreds of songs, yet for the most part, once they were finalized they were never performed again. Their playlist for lives concerts were very short (they were on stage for 30 minutes only) and it didn't change much throughout a tour. I find this interesting and somewhat sad.
Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were almost on Pepper but Epstien said they needed a single and George Martin gave those two songs and he said it was his biggest mistake and those to songs are the best single ever didnt make number one problem was they kind of canceled each other out their first single not to reach number one Engel HUMPERDINKIE beat them out with the song Release me and HUMPERDINKIE you are released
This song is anything but simple. You guys simply have to react to classical musician Howard Goodall's commentary on the Beatles, which includes a trenchant analysis of this very song. It is absolutely revelatory. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/ZQS91wVdvYc/v-deo.html
@@simonlee3614 Thanks for responding! I obviously agree that it's great. I wish Nick and Gabe would watch it. It would provide context, insight, and flavor to their reactions which you don't get by just hopping around randomly between songs.
THANK YOU, I have been saying that for YEARS!!! They should have shown PAUL on his own walking around, instead of JOHN! It's PAUL'S compostion and about Penny Lane which was near his home and had more memories for him and George, than John. I never understood that either!!
This is Paul's song to respond to John's Strawberry Fields. Strawberry fields was a church garden just down the street from John's house, where he would jump the fence and have a little fort in the woods to be alone. Paul wrote this about the bus stop he and George would use to go to school and take the bus into the city center of Liverpool.
John quit the band in September of 1969. Paul, George and Ringo topped off some over dubs throughout the winter and finally, Paul ended it in April of 1970.
Yes, Paul was listening to the "Brandenburg Concerto" and heard that high trumpet which he had never heard before, but loved it. He mentioned it to George Martin, their producer, and asked if he knew what the instrument was. Martin told him it is a 'Piccolo Trumpet" which is smaller than a conventional trumpet (which Paul's Dad, Jim, played) and had a higher sound. Paul asked George Martin if they could use one on Penny Lane, so that is when he hired a player for it. I like the version of "Penny Lane" where the piccolo trumpet ENDS the song....much better than the usual version.
The "Shelter in the middle of the roundabout" is still there though the last time I saw it it was unused. The "Portrait of The Queen" probably refers to a banknote with a portrait of the then Queen on it.
Lennon did break up the band. He left in '69 and never came back. The others finished the last album without him. But in actuality thanks mostly to John, George, and Jann Wenner Paul was the one who got the blame and most of the hate. It remains today to a large extent. The reason people dislike Yoko has more to do with Julian and Cynthia.
It's astonishing how many stories there are about the breakup of the Beatles. The accepted facts are...Ringo left for a few weeks in August, 1968. George left in January, 1969. John wanted to leave many times. And Paul finalized his break in April, 1970. The legacy left speaks for itself.
Actually John told the other members he was done in November 1969 but they agreed not to make it public with Let It Be yet to be released. George and Ringo got into an argument with Paul over the release date of new his solo album being too close the Let It Be release. That fight led Paul to make the announcement the band was done prior to the album release leaving the others quite angry. Those hard feelings between Paul and the others lasted several years.
Do you even have a favourite Beatles song ???? Good grief do you EVER stop talking ??? Listen to your friend you might just learn something… as for it being 3 + mins please remember this was on vinyl ….sorry can’t cope with you yapping on but actually saying very little
At this point, you should just release a shirt saying ‘This isn’t one of my favourite Beatles songs’, because that’s what ends up being said 90% of the time after a Beatles song.
Yoko Ono had practically nothing to do with the breakup of the Beatles. They had begun falling apart after doing Sgt Pepper in 1967. It was a slow painful decline.
this is probably not in my top ten Beatles songs BUT....... it's still fantastic with a capital F!! All of the best Beatles songs(and there are many) seem to be unique unto themselves. AND I almost never don't hear the influence of producer George Martin........ I'd bet that trumpet solo was his idea......amazing.
The Love Shows last performance in on July 6th, because the "Hard Rock Cafe" bought the Mirage where the "LOVE " show is, and they decided NOT to keep the "LOVE" show. I am so upset, because I was never able to make it out there, to see it. Too much expense for that kind of trip, for my financial situation. I doubt you could get a ticket now. I wish they had at least FILMED it and put it on a DVD so those of us who were never able to go to Vegas and see it in person, could get a sense of what it was like. I am so heartbroken.
To be fair if you are from Vegas how can you really identify with a song about a small lane in Northern England UK. And the Beatles are singing about what they saw there in the late 50s early 60's! I'm from Northern England so it resonates with me a lot more but I can completely see how it wouldn't with people from completely different parts of the world!
I don´t get this song. it is weird and not structured. it reminds me of old pink floyd, just without any charm or.. structure. it is a weird song and many beatles song are. too english.. british that is. they did establish many thngs first but really, they eventually had very little to offer.
The dude is being so polite to the old guy. he didn´t really like the song but he tries to explain how it was cool. so sad. this compared to any queen reaction is like a frost against a tropical wather. to me it says it all.
It would have been part of a concept album with Strawberry Field Forever. I would have liked an album like that. Also imagine if they had been included on Sgt Pepper album, wow!! I will add that music does not come out of a vacuum, so I would recommend looking at a programme around at the time called " The Avengers" which was a surreal kind of Spy M.I.5. British humour, type programme. You might understand the vibe going on in this video.
Come on Guys. You have to React to the Three Songs that Sydnie Christmas sang on BGT. She was very funny in her Audition then she sang, 'Tomorrow'. Her Second Song was 'My Way' except she sang it Her Way. Her Final song was 'Over the Rainbow'. You will never have heard it sang her way before.

And the Barbers is still there on Penny Lane - with photos of the Beatles on the wall.

The Beatles' Vegas show Love has two weeks left. Last day, July 6.
Next time try The Ballad of John and Yoko.
I can never understand why Americans in general have baseball caps on 24 7 . They look ok . Just wondering .
Really? I'm American and have never noticed, probably because it's not true?

"Imagine" is not a Beatles song, big mouth!
I mean who could NOT like this song! It's a McCartney masterpiece!

Thank you for the link, I'd never seen it before. What a great documentary.

its a complicated song, not simple. Its a great
It sounds simple....... but like most Beatles songs, there's just a lot to it!
I don’t understand why this video is so focused on John when it’s Paul’s song. Stroking John’s ego I guess.
THANK YOU, I have been saying that for YEARS!!! They should have shown PAUL on his own walking around, instead of JOHN! It's PAUL'S compostion and about Penny Lane which was near his home and had more memories for him and George, than John. I never understood that either!!
Penny Lane a real street in Liverpool.
this was the other side of Strawberry Fields Forever by John on the single. Its more poppy and simple at first gaze, but also so layered and complex.
I love this song. With so many lyrics that are so British
So strange that the video focuses primarily on John Lennon when Paul McCartney is the main writer and lead singer of the tune.
Yeah I always wondered about that. Showing John to be boss Beatle probably
Much better than rap and hip hop rubbish
It was John that told Paul directly that he wanted to leave the band, it was something Paul knew was going to happen before anything to do with Yoko.
Absolutely!!!!
Four of the absolute COOLEST people to ever set foot on Earth !!!! 😊
I agree😅
There is a brilliant clip of Elvis Costello singing Penny Lane at The White House in front of Barak Obama and Sir Paul
Penny lane was a # one hit .The Beatles are so different. that one should. listen to a Beatles song at lease 2 or 3 times before judgement.
This is Paul's song to respond to John's Strawberry Fields. Strawberry Fields was a Salvation Army orphanage. My uncle Harry was a brigadier general or the like in the Salvation Army lived to be nearly 100
A piccolo trumpet player was paid to record the catchy higher trumpet sound.

Doesnt matter a damn what the song or the band is, gabe will talk totally unrelated shite. I dont know why you bother.

Full of bullshit ! Annoyed me as well. Not the brightest

i am sure you have heard this song back in 1967 or were you born under a rock, smoking LSD or in a coma
Jeezo ! A woman ? Penny Lane is a street in Liverpool where they grew up
Boring Reviews is right.
Just went to show. It’s called LOVE. Must do, before the mirage also gets taken down!!!
this is probably not in my top ten Beatles songs BUT....... it's still fantastic with a capital F!! All of the best Beatles songs(and there are many) seem to be unique unto themselves. **I grew up in Vegas.... I read about the Tropicana thing recently and it just makes me sick to my stomach and breaks my heart.💔
Bioletti's is the barber shop I just don't know if the spelling is right you know how English language is 😊

Penny Lane is a street and the title to this song. Abbey Road is a street and a recording studio, and the title to an album.
Who could go past a track featuring that fantastic Bach trumpet!
Afghans hounded the Oz out
