Intel has a lot of stuff going on in Malaysia: from their SIMS facility that manufactures testing equipment for their other factories/facilities, to testing labs that put their latest silicon through hell before production, to the actual die sort/prep and packaging, there's a lot to see. I genuinely don't understand why this video is performing badly. It's so fascinating
Well, for one, it has only been up for 2 hours and Quinn does not have the broad network like others, though I love him to bits, because his story telling is amazing. It is giving us a different look in the world of UA-cam glam....
I mean, the channel has been doing pretty bad the last couple of months. The algorithm is killing it.
I think sometimes it’s things like negative sounding words in titles. On another channel I have I had a video with the word “hates” in the title and basically no one saw it. I ended up removing it so it didn’t affects the rest.
So maybe it’s the “made me so mad” in the title? Just a guess though, I don’t actually know.

I don't know but I almost didn't click it, it just didn't seem inviting to watch another Intel factory commercial. I'm not saying it is but that's what I thought seeing the thumbnail and title

I used to work for Microchip, at their fab in Oregon. It was amazing seeing what goes into semiconductors at the literal base level, and being a part of that was a fabulous change of pace from after a decade of retail.
It's always cool to see Malaysia flexing it's manufacturing capabilities. I used to live near the omron factory there and took a tour of it once. It was amazing to see all the advanced facilities there. Hope you got to enjoy the marvelous food there Quinn!

This was a great video, one of the best ones I've seen from Intel's lab tours. Intel is an engineering giant, and they are doing everything from the ground up, unlike AMD/Nvidia/Apple/etc. Chip foundries, chip packaging, CPU and GPU architecture teams, test labs, security researcher centers, you name it. Since they have foundries they literally have engineering teams devoted to reducing water consumption that their fabs use.
I’m such a nerd to the point these types of videos are entertaining.
Intel should’ve let you in like they’d let Linus in a couple of months ago.
This channel is not even close to be big enough for Intel to let them walk into their factory. Linus would have had well over a million views right now, this video is struggling to brake 10k.

Letting random (to them) people film can go bad, for PR reasons. Letting randos in with USB devices can mean a compromised network/production line. There's all sorts of very real risks involved.

The thing about letting people inside to film inside is that Intel (or whoever) has to make sure to go over every bit of footage shot with a very fine comb so that nothing secret is accidentally leaked. This is fine for one or two big channels - but a much worse effort to value proposition for a whole bunch of smaller channels. So - I do get where Intel is coming from in that regard.

I like how even Intel aren't running Windows 11 on their production machines, still rocking 10 lol.
11 is running on the ones at 2:05, 5:03 and 5:40 but yeah, I'm surprised they're not running embedded versions of XP😁
@@Cyba_ITI have ditched windows for what is now an ARM based OS because MS kept installing bloatware, tampering with my system configuration, destroying driver compatibility. I don’t blame them for operating old systems.
Working for various suppliers to this industry I understand how resistant to change manufacturers are. Which is not a bad thing. They want consistency in their production system.
I was surprised how the mylar was used. I worked on a vision system using a line cameras to align dies on a wafer for testing. But that was a decade ago.
@@chriswatt2702 Yeah, Enterprise usually hold back until all/most of the bugs have been ironed out. They leave that to the early adopters and home users. 😂 Hence why Win 10 is still by far the most used Win OS worldwide.
I've got 28 PC's in the office running Linux distro's, Chrome, Mac and Windows. I run Windows on the main ones because free and compatible software is easiest to find. They're fine as long as I clean and optimize them often.

Incredible video, seeing every piece of machinery and just thinking about the amount of engineer that went into every single thing is sooo deeply humbling

I have a soft spot for Intel (as I stated in my probably most upvoted comment, on the Linus Tour video). It's nice to see that there is still a lot of dedicated and very cool people working there, and I am happy they made it possible for you to tour the factory and make this video. I enjoyed it a lot!
Hi, Quin glad you got a chance to see it in person video doesn't do it justice. I have worked at Intel's Ocotillo Campus in Chandler, Arizona it is bigger and more complex than you can imagine. Intel provides everything to their employees on site for example banking, dental, eye care, day care, gym, etc. It is a very interesting place to work. Everything there resolves around "Culture".... I know they pissed you off by inviting you there and then denying you access, working there is even stranger than you can imagine and not in a good way. I wont go into detail but your new Intel buddies can enlighten you perhaps if they care to. Like everything in life there is good and bad. A job used to be about just the work, you know show up on time do your job, treat others well. Not anymore now anyone can report you for fictitious reasons and just like that you are shown the door, with no chance to defend ones self. It is a weird place to navigate, love the tech but a lot of the blue badges (Intel employees) are straight up a nightmare. Peace
I work in the Leixlip factory in Ireland, cool place to work, stressful at times but fulfilling. Parts of the process are surprisingly simple once you understand them, not all of the equipment is 200 million dollar EUV tech after all.
Hey Quinn, keep up the great work. Production quality has certainly improved since the earlier days, and I feel like the topics chosen for videos offer a different view compared to other techtubers.

I understood your description way better than Linus's! 😁Imagine how many processors they have to make to make this financially viable and every new processor design requires retooling of the manufacturing equipment although I'm sure they try and keep physical changes to a minimum to save costs. Samsung I think might be another company that is as vertically integrated as Intel? They have their own fabs, and while they do have a lot of contract work for chip design companies much like TSMC, they also make their own chips, and, unlike Intel, a lot of their own products to put those chips in.
Thanks for this video. I now know that the visual artifacting on my Arc A770 card is coming from a failed chip. 😅 Im the only person on earth who had this visual artifacting and I couldn't find a single other report of this until now.

Honestly it would be nearly identical at this level. The differences are in the microscopic features made on each die.

Intel may be the only major logic chip maker that is fully integrated, with in-house design, process development, fab, packaging, and testing. But all of the major memory makers (Samsung, Hynix, Micron) are also fully vertically integrated.

I work in a German semiconductor manufacturing company (in a plant located in this same country) and in my 8 years here, i’ve only once manage to visit the final testing area. I’ve yet to get the chance to visit the assembly area😢. It is very, very difficult to get the chance to visit these production area as they consider it an interruption to the production area. Auditors visit alone give them enough of a headache.

Intel is just nuts for doing everything in house. I work at a foundry and even without the packaging and a much more basic version of electrical testing its still so complicated

It’s interesting that Intel churning out blistering CPUs (yes, they do run hot but they they’re very fast). I’m not sure if the shake ups , Apple leaving them or what, but at least in the desktop space they’re competitive. As a Portlander I’ve known more than a few people who work there, so I’m always rooting for them.
They're only (and just) competitive by throwing almost twice the power at the problem compared to the AMD equivalent. It's like saying you have a faster car, by just putting in a bigger engine, yet still barely beat the car with the smaller, less fuel thirsty engine. They really are suffering from poor management and lack of R&D investment for those few years before they got rid of their old CEO. A lot of brain drain too as engineers left or were made redundant.

they should handle media better on both sides - those mediocre 14th gen chips need all the positive press they can get.

As shaky as their CPU releases have been for the past few years, it's always impressive to witness how these chips even come to be. Even though they're pretty late in terms of performance to their competitors (especially in gaming segments) they still make impressive hardware and there are really pationate people behind all these incredible parts that fit in the palm of your hands.
What's the next step now Quinn, visiting TSMC? 😏

This is a very Intel thing. They don't give a f about anyone just another huge corporation (like apple) that wants to look good infront of the right people to look good and grow their stocks.
(BTW looking at a MacBook Pro 14 M3 (if it's released this year) just because of the battery life so not a complete apple hator)
That's the default stance for practically every company, regardless of size. It's just more obvious when you get to the bigger players.
