6:30 I wholly agree, I was on board with this product until I saw the paid subscription for core features. Now nevermind, not touchiing it as long as that's there.
There's two reasons a company will usually go for a subscription model: 1) the cost of ongoing development of certain features of the product means that we need to charge concurrently to fund that development, or 2) Screw you, you clearly have the money to spend on our product, why shouldn't we continually charge you for the pleasure of using it? Especially if there's no similar competitor on the market, I find it hard to believe that $2500 for a bed cover, water pump, heating element and tubing isn't enough to turn a profit. I know R&D and whatnot is also a factor, but surely the subscription is unnecessary... The app development is probably negligible compared to the upfront cost of the manufacturing.
@@bilalsadiq1450 I'd argue there's a third: investors won't give you money if you don't have a subscription model, as that is a much easier way to build long term revenue than constantly finding exponentially more people to buy your product.
The scary thing about the Eight Sleep is if the company goes belly up. To no fault of your own that core functionality probably stops working. With no way to alter it. Unless these types of companies explicitly say these features will be unlocked in the event they can no longer provide support. I’m hesitant to jump onboard.
Its also an expensive product of course as with all expensive products it might fail and leave you with nothing but it has a built in failure that if you stop paying the company, it becomes nearly useless despite costing thousands upfront.
Yeah I'm not liking the idea of Sleep as a Service becoming normalised. If I'm going to have smart tech in my bed then I think I need it to be open source. I've learnt that I can't trust companies to do the right thing, so before I buy something that may come to be a major part of my sleep schedule, I need the code (and ideally schematics).
You were 100% selling me on the Eight Sleep (I sleep like crap because I can’t get the temperature right), until I saw the subscription. Hell absolutely no, if I’m spending that kind of money, and I’m happy to given the tech behind it, you’re not locking me out of it because you don’t think I’ve spent enough yet. Like you said some of the features require active development and I get that, the subscription being needed for some features isn’t a bad thing, but effectively making this awesome product a $2500 heated mattress cover if I don’t want to subscribe should be criminal.
no joke i was ready to shell out 2500 until the subscription thing popped up, some day their service and servers will shut down and the hardware made useless, with foresight like this they WILL eventually fizzle out. unfortunate.
Same. Ended up ordering their competitor (sleepme) when they started stocking covers again. Hopefully it's good as well. I just wanted something that would work at least somewhat without an app because companies will eventually die, so you have to account for that.
Exactly the same.. yeah $2500 max and the wife will be happy.. oh wait no i’m not paying a monthly subscription for that whilst hoping they remain afloat. Nope.
For me, although I agree that the $15+ a month is shameful, it's as much about the fact that my $2,500 purchase becomes as useless as having it without a subscription if Eight Sleep go under, or get bought by a company whose privacy terms I don't like, or they decide to double or treble the monthly charge, or I'm out of work for a time, etc etc.
The optics are terrible, but imagine instead: would you flip a quarter to a witch doctor every night 1000 years ago if they could bless your sleep and you'd wake up great? I would.
I'm personally not buying the Eight Sleep because of the subscription requirement. I'd pay more upfront, but I won't get locked into a monthly fee for my own bed.
FYI The name of the country is pronounced as if it was "Czekia" (che-kii-ia) not "Czechia" (che-chi-ia). Some also prefer "the Czech ('check') Republic".
I would get the 8sleep thing in the enar future but the subscription thing just made that change instantly. I'll wait for a cheaper version from another company that doesn't have sleazy practices.

It only has disadvantages for anyone involved. An app is fine and good, but it should connect via bluetooth and work without any cloud service. Loved the video! I love these kind of videos by Quinn - from server and audiophile setups to guilty pleasure hardware! I’d love to follow a blog about such random topics if he ever created one!
The thermal alarm for the bed would suck for me, cause I learned that my brain does NOT like heat when sleeping. I consistently will get nightmares if I sleep with too many blankets on me. Ever since I figured that out, I've slept either with a light blanket, or with like half of my body exposed to air. I found that the last few times I had nightmares, I was covered with blankets and sweat. Also can't sleep with PJs/clothes on, mainly cause I can't stand the loose fabric rubbing and tugging on the bedding, but partially to prevent overheating.
I was intrigued by the mattress, but that's a hard "no" on the mandatory subscription model. I will be astonished if they're still in business in a couple of years if they stick with that.
Quinn - may I suggest looking at the Kawai CA701 for your next piano? It's got the Grand Feel III action, which most people will consider as close as you'll get to the feel of a real piano action without spending a whole lot more money on something that's basically a digital with a full piano action inside. I've got the predecessor, the CA79, and as someone in a very similar situation who took 12 years of piano lessons: it's an excellent piano that's a pleasure to play on.
Yeah Bambu printers are impressive, but the damage they've done to the desktop 3D printing community and market far outweighs that in my opinion. We were a community built on open source and collaboration, and far too many people seem willing to abandon that.
My parents have been using a product similar to the 8 Sleep for about 5 years. It's called the Chilly Pad, but it doesn't have the subscription/sensor stuff. So it's just the heating/cooling without the stuff that you have to pay the subscription for.
Can some e-bike owners in the States explain what is the point of owning one? I thought riding a "manual" bicycle is to exercise, build stamina and commuting relatively fast. Why to use e-bike at all? It's like going to the gym, but not working out? Commuting in a large city only to be afraid of it to be stolen? I've had a Ninebot for 3 years and even it seems more practical as a last mile vehicle.
I'm laughing at the idea of a waterbed being bougie, I had one in the 80's complete with user controllable heating and no subscription but my parents got rid of it in the 90's when hypothermia fears gripped the nation. It was the only bed I could comfortably sleep on my back, regular mattresses I have to sleep on my side. The electric bike is one thing I want to get, I don't need the expense of a car for getting around town. I've been thinking of getting a piano, electric or percussion, but I'm watching estate sale auctions to get one cheap. 3D printers are an unnecessary expense for me, I've been perfectly happy ordering from Thingverse for the few things I've wanted.
Yep, was wanting to get a mattress for temp control, but I am not paying for another subscription. I'll be on the lookout for a company that doesn't see me as a perpetual money-printing machine, and in the meantime, I'll sleep better knowing I'm not paying those vultures.
The Yamaha CP or YC 88 are fantastic options for great feeling and sounding keyboards. They don’t have built in speakers but the keybed is incredible feeling.
I know it kinda defeats the purpose of the video, but I just recently bought the Yamaha CK88 (essentially the next model down) and it does essentially the same as the YC for half the price. I got to demo both at a music store and personally preferred the CK just for the interface.
This is why I like the sleep number beds. Has all the same health tracking, while being adjustable for firmness, and the higher end models have temperature adjustment, not locked into some dumb contract. Cool product, but that monthly fee is absolutely a no. Hate how companies are locking features behind a monthly fee, like when bmw was charging a fee for wireless CarPlay…
I like the big battery of that ebike, but if you are using it for commuting all year round (just 10mi/d for 250d/y is already 2500mi/y) you will need a place that will service your bike (or you need to do it yourself) and you probably want to upgrade the brakes and the shifting (but you can do it when the components that come with the bike wear out), make sure your local bike shop will service the bike you buy or learn how to do it yourself.
You're right about Eight Sleep - I looked at the monthly pricing model and thought "I don't need another Netflix subscription on top of 2 grand for my bed"

I don't play piano, but I've tried to learn and I think that the Kawai is a good keyboard for the price.

You should look at the Swiss Stromer ST7 if you like expensive e-bikes. It has an automatic electronic transmission, anti lock breaks, 240km range and 45km/h top speed. But it’s 14000€
Despite liking stromers, they have a very big Achilles heel: It's a wheel motor, so, unnatural center of gravity. It's not about the most expensive but the best compromise on all fronts. I'd take any bike with the new pinion motor over any stromer, every single day. And pay less. Heck, I'd get a POLE (100%CNC machined) and chose the components myself (hoping for the pinion with them soon). Stromer is overpriced BS.
They do make similar digital pianos with wooden keys. Sticking with Roland, they also have FP-701 and DP603 fitted with PHA-50 which has wooden keys. Same with Kawai CA701/901 and Yamaha Clavinova SLP line, but they're quite a bit more, especially the Kawais. If you're looking for the more realistic touch, there's Yamaha AvantGrand NU1XA which has true acoustic upright piano action, also Kawai NV5S and K300/K200.
Was going to get the 8 sleep before until I looked on the website and saw the subscription. Either charge for the tech upfront or a subscription, not both.
I literally had another tab open looking at the 8Sleep until I heard that $15/mo price. Oddly never heard of it in their sponsored stuff with other creators. Quinn is spot on: paying a subscription is deterring buyers.
Subscription on bed tech would make me say no and 15.00 doesn’t make me happy either. I would consider it if not for subscription. Maybe have a onetime lifetime payments?
I was looking at upgrading my ChiliSleep system a while back but all of the competitors have subscription models, which is a hard no from me. All I want is more cooling power. I become a furnace when I sleep and the Chili Cube I have struggles to dissipate my body heat. Still, so much better than nothing. It fixed a nearly life-long sleep problem.
For compact digital pianos I'm a huge fan of the Casio PX series. Some of them look downright beautiful and, in my opinion (as a fellow grew-up-with-Yamaha-CX-Grand kid), has one of the best keyboard feels in any digital piano under $4000. Plus they're way more affordable.
The e-bike is actually not a bad deal. Like many other products, e-bike prices jumped during and just after the Pandemic....but Himiway's prices did not spike, happily.
We are re-tooling for early next year. Shot a couple pilots and we liked them, but we want to *love them*. All while trying to avoid spreading ourselves too thin.
Yo Quinn, serious question, why not try a weighted blanket? If you like the heft of a comforter but get too hot using it, a knit-style weighted blanket is a literal game changer. I can't go back. Do consider it if you haven't!
Wow. EightSleep looks so cool, but that pricing model is absolutely a no go. I won't even consider a product that expensive with most of its features locked behind a subscription. I see a bunch of other comments saying this, but I'm posting this in hopes that they see all these comments and reconsider their model.
You are absolutely right! Been looking at eight sleep and was going to eat the price till I found out about the subscription cost and that deterred me away
I'd love to buy the Eight Sleep but you're right their pricing model is what will keep me from buying it. I get they offer features that warrant the subscription cost which is fine, but the product itself will ware out and need to be replaced at some point. Subsidize the price of the cover with the subscription cost or remove it don't have a high price and monthly subscription.
I have a much cheaper Roland FP-30 (not the latest X) and it's amazing for under $500, and I got a chance to see the 701, and I agree it's incredible for the price!
The Eight Sleep is very expensive for me, living in Slovenia and earning a regular paycheck here, but I was certainly thinking about it. Now that I found it its also a subscription, I certainly won't be thinking about it anymore, just too expensive to justify.

0:44 ***just a heads up the mattress comes with a cat and you can’t remove it from the order
Out of curiosity since you made this video are these items all tax write-offs now? Amazing video and very helpful.
"I think our home pod just blew up" 4:26
RIP
The e-bike is actually not a bad deal. Like many other products, e-bike prices jumped during and just after the Pandemic....but Himiway's prices did not spike, happily.
Is your HomePod okay? Did it blow up?
RIP HomePod 💥
Hey, when’s your new channel “I said yes!” launching?
We are re-tooling for early next year. Shot a couple pilots and we liked them, but we want to *love them*. All while trying to avoid spreading ourselves too thin.
What's that about? His gay marriage?
@@keksimus__maximusSorry I’m not single, sweetie. You’ll find your man someday.

Maybe in another life
So what's the new channel about?
I wonder if you can do a comparison of the EightSleep and something like a Chilipad - similar product but no subscription.
Yo Quinn, serious question, why not try a weighted blanket? If you like the heft of a comforter but get too hot using it, a knit-style weighted blanket is a literal game changer. I can't go back. Do consider it if you haven't!
input shaping beta was released today on the xl
Downloading it as we speak!!
Hope it works great!
another SnazzyLabs Video this month!?!?!?!?! I love this Quinn, love this.
Interesting stuff, thnx! regarding you question i like the Unistellar "smart" telescopes, expensive but pretty cool if you into Astronomy
I didn't expect to be called out so early into the video! Thanks man!
Alexa... Play "Loser" by "Beck"...
I have been wanting to get this 8sleep thing for a while now, but refuse to accept that monthly fee. The cost of the product is already soooo high.
would love to see more 3d print content!
I'm not paying $2500 to get stuck with a $15 subscription
The Eight Sleep is very expensive for me, living in Slovenia and earning a regular paycheck here, but I was certainly thinking about it. Now that I found it its also a subscription, I certainly won't be thinking about it anymore, just too expensive to justify.
3:53 there are studies that show that temperature affects your sleep cycle more than light.
Love the Husqvarna Svartpilen in your garage. You should have included that one in the list as well 😊
