    Artexic - great video and help. Think our problem was my daughter bought Dell XPS13 at John Lewis with WIN10 preloaded - who by?. Not aware of the recovery bitkey/code protocols, no-one told us what that code was. Machine broke, she's on 2nd replacement device, and off course we got locked out without the bitlocker key after a recent "sent away to Dell for repair" (so we couldn't learn the key via windows). Several days of angst but breakthru was she just been able to locate details from MSoft account & it's fixed. All because of the belief I got from your video. Many thanks. THINKS: Dell repair replaced the motherboard, so that's (I assume) a hardware/configuration change ?? - maybe her PIN might struggle (so we need the 'double reboot' with key suspended method, eh??

    Hello. I have someting to ask. A few years ago, I did bitlocker to one of my files but I didn't know I have to make Recovery key(id) to unlock them. And I have changed my computer, and I tried to unlockt them, I couldn't succeed. Someone said "If you didn't make recovery key on the computer where you did bitlocker, you can't unlock them on other computers. You have no choice but to give up the files" But the files are really really important to me and I just didn't know, and I wasn't noticed that I have to make recovery key!! Can I unlock them with your method?

    ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th gen.
    The windows does not boot, it asks for the bitlocker recovery key. Just blue screen
    I gave up on rescueing the data, just want to reset the original factory state. But I'm asked for the recovery key for that as well.
    The device has not been registered with my MS account. I created local accounts during the install, did not use my online MS account. I did not set up OneDrive, either.
    What is the way of reverting back to the factory state?
    Thanks!

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому

      Hi Triwin GR, I'm sorry to hear that, it's not nice when locked out by full disk encryption. The latest version of this video is ua-cam.com/video/AZlGZLDWnIQ/v-deo.html If this doesn't help you track down the recovery key, I'm afraid it isn't likely you will be able to get in.
      I assume you have powered down the laptop and that it continues to ask for a Recovery Key. Bitlocker does this following certain BIOS/UEFI changes, and well has hardware changes.
      I've never tried brute force software against Bitlocker, and don't hold a lot of hope up that it would work (protection like TPM is likely to prevent it), but this is the first I would naturally try myself: www.elcomsoft.com/edpr.html
      Best of luck to you. Unfortunately there is no simple backdoor, but do make sure you've checked all options in the video as lots of people find there key was backed up to OneDrive or similar.

    If i do format and insatiling new windows OS .. the Bitlocker disappear? Or i can't do formate ?

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому

      Ali, formatting the drive will destroy all data, and the Bitlocker setup. Personally I tend to choose to delete the partition and force the installer to recreate, but a format should be good enough too.
      It goes without saying (but I'll say it to be sure!), you'll lose all data on the drive, so be sure that you've backed up anything you need first.

    • @Artexic

      Kaira, the video shows you the only options I'm aware of. The updated version of the video is here: ua-cam.com/video/AZlGZLDWnIQ/v-deo.html
      If you're confident that you saved the recovery key somewhere but have lost it (e.g. it's encrypted on the disk), and the other options don't work for you, then the only remaining option I know about is to about to brute force the password. I've never tried such software myself, and don't hold a lot of hope up that it would work, but this is the first I would naturally try myself: www.elcomsoft.com/edpr.html
      I would suggest to exhaust all other options before putting your faith in such tools. I'm not a big fan of Microsoft, but Bitlocker does seem to be well secured.

    can you please help me

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому

      Hi Kalwar, an external drive should be no different to an internal in that the key will have been offered to be saved to the same locations. It is quite likely you would have saved it to your internal drive I would imagine.
      It maybe worth watching my updated video (ua-cam.com/video/AZlGZLDWnIQ/v-deo.html) and checking those same locations. Unfortunately there is no master key or way of clearing Bitlocker pins, it is true full disk encryption, so you will need to track down the Recovery Key or pin.

  • @mtalrashdi

    Hi I bought a laptop from eBay and it’s asking for a bitlocker key is there anyway I can use the laptop “ unlock the drive “ ?

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому +1

      Mutasim, if you don't have the Bitlocker pin or Recovery Key, you won't be able to get to the current data on the drive.
      If you bought the laptop with the intention of using the Windows installation that is on it, then you will need to contact the seller for these details.
      If however you were planning to install your own operating system, then you can just format the drive to remove Bitlocker (and lose all current data on the laptop), and install the operating system of your choice.
      In my job, I use the free Ubuntu installation media (via USB key), and choose to Try Ubuntu (doesn't install it, just boots into Ubuntu directly from the key). From here, I use GParted to delete the current partitions of a hard drive that was locked. This way you can reboot the PC and install the Operating System of your choice.

      @@Artexic Hi Friend , Can u tell me if I can throw away the encrypted hard drive and put a new drive with New Os , will that boot my laptop, or does it also locks the BIOS as well ?

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  5 років тому

      @@samratpaul25 actually, if you're happy losing the data you can wipe the current drive and use it instead of buying a new one. Days will be lost but of you're happy to wipe you can wipe it.
      Use a boot USB stick or CD to boot a program that can wipe drives. I believe the Windows setup should offer option to delete the current partition(s). If not download something like Ubuntu, which has Disks as a program that will delete the partitions for you

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому

      Sorry to hear that TheEdisse. Bitlocker is an enterprise grade encryption solution, with no simple bypass methods... Something that is great until you find yourself locked out.
      For clarity I never recommend people to contact their manufacturer (they too have no secret bypass or master key), I simply remind people of the process they would have been through in encrypting, which helps many people to track down their recovery key. Sorry it wasn't able to help you.

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому +1

      MyTech Planet, don't panic... Bitlocker comes in different versions. I believe Win8 has an older version than Win10, hence it is not able to read the drive.
      You will need to upgrade to Win10 again to read the drive. If you really want to use Win8 going forward (I'm not a Microsoft fan, but Win10 definitely beats Win8 for me), then:
      1. Upgrade to Win10 again (sorry!)
      2. Unencrypt the drive in Win10
      3. Re-install Win8
      4. Re-encrypt the drive in Win8
      If you didn't use TPM in the encryption, you maybe able to unencrypt the drive by plugging it into another PC that is running Win10, but that is a big "if".
      I hope that helps you get your data back.

    • @Artexic

      Totally agree. I marked this video as superseded when i created the other video (UA-cam doesn't allow updating of videos unfortunately. I left this one as it seems to get ranked differently so helps lots on onedrive based codes who wouldn't find the other video. Better save the recovery key instead of the password then !?

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  6 років тому

      Sorry Meghal, I don't offer phone based technical support. It sounds like you have no option to recover the key as it is encrypted itself. It is worth considering whether it may have been backed up as part of any cloud backups you perform. I'm afraid I don't know of any reliable method to break the BitLocker encryption, which is effectively what you would need to do, if your recovery key isn't stored anywhere other than in the encrypted area of your drive.

      Ouch! I'd appreciate any specific feedback you have Hussain. My videos seem to help lots of people, so I don't intend to stop just yet 😀. Happy to bear in mind any feedback you may have though.
      Hope you found what you were looking for in other videos.
