Driving Nio is an experience, including Nio spaces in shopping malls and Nio lounges at airports. Driving BYD is getting from A to B. I'd rather see Nio get cash from the Middle East. With their superior technology, they'll eventually make it, especially now that they have a new low-cost brand to attack the mass market. BYD is the future VW/Skoda, Nio is the future BMW/Benz.
I think most companies would love to own NIO. They have great premium cars, really smart technology with battery swap that works excellently well and their new sub brand Onvo is looking good. Firefly is also on the way and it is expected to sell even more than Onvo. It will be a win-win for both BYD and NIO. BYD is frugal with spending and they know how to achieve profitability so they could more quickly turn around the financial fortune of NIO. BYD will utilize NIO's technology and make it more efficient. Either way, NIO isn't going away anytime soon in my opinion. They will be profitable and their share price will soar.
BYD are most likely to be interested in Nio's battery swap stations. For safety and infrastructure issues, fast charging won't reach the low times that vehicle owners want. Battery swap however, is dependent on i) standards (this is a critical requirement) ii) mechanical process speed iii) battery weight BYD has strong enough presence that they could create a de-facto standard, fulfilling i). BYD proved their industrial engineering ability with their vehicle lines so they could do ii) pretty well BYD's blade battery would work well with iii) as you could modularize the battery so the battery weight is distributed among multiple battery blades or modules
Maybe this system allow 4 extra money, selling energy from renewable can make more money and like big gas station you can add restaurant, supermarket etc.
The Limiting Factor channel has an insightful video (ua-cam.com/video/rxtS7mjrTvo/v-deo.html) entitled "Nio Battery Pack Swapping // Everything You Need to Know" that discusses some significant challenges to be overcome for a battery swapping to be scaled up and profitable. In my (non-expert) opinion, the three positives you list in your comment are outweighed by the negatives in the video I mentioned.
@@CiaranMcHale Clicked through the video but i don't think those issues are that critical. One point is that without standards, there is 0% chance that economies of scale can be utilized. With ii) and this economies of scale (hence critical), costs will be reduced and that includes station costs. Watch videos on how BYD manages to manufacture cars and sell at their prices and yet make a profit, ie process engineering and economies of scale through integration The single point of failure is fine if you have economies of scale because you build more slots for the same cost. For example, one of them breaks down? Put them in pairs as a single building. The other car manufacturers will also want part ownership (and thus share costs) or build their own (still based on the same standard) rather than have BYD control the entire chain The only point that will affect the battery swapping is the rent vs buy issue but that has nothing to do with the technology or process. It is instead a legal issue and affects the final pricing of the service as legal battery ownership means the battery swapping will be more complex as you will need the same model of battery and requires the owner's nod and approval. This can be solved by putting in a manual swap station that is much less in number so you push consumers to allow for battery changes

There is no compelling reason for BYD to buy or just JV with NIO.. NIO does not provide any benefit to BYD even consider any acquisition.. It's to BYD's advantage to allow NIO to go bankrupt.. by the numbers given here, nio seems poorly managed and doomed, it's investors may take up any half reasonable offer. many nio cars do seem nice, and they have the best battery swap, which i think is good tech. the way things are happening, byd may worry someone else may want to buy nio. almost every other car company would love to have nio.
It would only make sense to aquire technology from NIO. NIO has touted everything but a plan for profitability for three years. Gonna shoulda woulda coulda is not a plan. Stock is down from the high of $65 and now is around $5 a share.
Why should BYD buy Nio when like an over ripe apple it’s about to fall off the tree? After which BYD can pick up the parts it likes during the fire sale?
The premium market on any product has a lower profit threshold. People that buy a NIO do so for the privilege of using NIO houses, lifestyle products, and status! NIO’s plan for profits is it’s lower tier brands that are just starting, ONVO and Firefly. Along with their energy and technology products. People with money pay extra for exclusivity! NIO battery swap vehicles have resell value, not many EV’s have resell value. You need a better understanding of this exclusive market.
Nio will always have funding and spend a lot cuz the CCP backs them. They also have backing from some middle Eastern country UAE I think. The swap stations function as grid backup to the local communities so they're in the public utilities business and get clean energy subsides from that and they also do microchips and software for self driving so they get govt subsidies for that arm of the business as well since China needs to grow the chip industry. They have a wide moat.
😂 man, why should NIO sell their assets and technology patents to BYD? Why are you so sure that they are in trouble? You probably missed their earning call and haven't checked the business outlook and comments about forecasted deliveries for 2025. They have a solid plan to become a profitable company by 2026. Please do your homework first, listen to what professor Parkev and other trusted analysts talk about the company now.
I'd love for you to be right (I'm invested in both companies), but Nio's current financials are not good at all. They've been losing more and more money over the last few years, in spite of their increasing revenue. They've also only managed to get their gross profit margin up to approximately 10%, which is half of what BYD earn. If they were in Tesla's position 10 years ago and had a lot of government support (i.e subsidies, incentives etc.) I could see them potentially pulling things off, but in today's market, with the rest of the Chinese competition - it's a very tall order.
@@tomfahey2823 It's not a tall order at all. The Chinese government in Hefei is supporting Nio. Chery Changan JAC have joined in the Swap network. Geely too. This is a long game Nio is playing. The state and the state owned companies are supporting Nio.

BYD are huge, but they're drowning in debt. Why would they want to take over NEO? What do they offer that BYD doesn't already have? BYD have enough problems of their own. Sure, they're making a profit at the moment, that's not on EVs, that's overall. It's by no means certain that BYD will survive, it's an incredibly difficult market to be in.
I saw that vlog on this topic regading their huge losses, and it stated they only make a profit of $4 per car sold. BYD have more debt than evergrande supposedly which is not a good sign. I am surprised Viking has nothing to say about that. Maybe the report was incorrect, so some additional input would be nice to see on this.
BYD makes more revenue than Tesla, and they make a profit on their EVs as well. Because 40% of cost of an EVs is the battery, unlike Tesla or any other car manufactorurs who have to source batteries from CATL or BYD and Panasonic to build their battery pack, BYD make the whole thing, plus all the vertical integration they have... they have at least 20% cost advantage over anyone. The only reason it appears BYD is not making money or very little money on their EVs is because they have reinvested 90% of their revenue back into R&D and capacity building. in 2023 Tesla's R&D cost was 4.5 B USD, BYD was 8.5 B USD. So when you look at profit per car it appears very little. But you really have look at balance sheet before they reinvest the revenue.
How is BYD "drowning in debt"?. Their assets (CN¥ 679.55B) exceed their liabilities (CN¥ 529.09B) by over CN¥ 150B. They've been profitable since 2002, their revenues are skyrocketing, their gross margins are 20.21% and their FCF was CN¥ 47.73B last year. What about that picture says "drowning in debt" to you? And talk about BYD surviving...have you seen NIO's financials? As an investor in both, I can tell you it's not a pretty picture at all...
Whats the future of battery swap when soon it will be possible to charge a car in 10 min.? I think it still make sense when those batteries always are charged when the energy is cheap.
I can see it as a way to protect resale, get newest tech as it improves, allow one to least a modest battery and then swap out for a larger one for a long trip.
Getting out of your vehicle to Charge in 10 minutes in hot/cold/rain/snow vs 3 minute battery swap just by using an app. Add a free car wash at the same time and Americans will flock to it plus byd has bad name recognition as big, bad, china. The future of battery swap lies outside the personal car market. It actually has a bright future in industries like mining, remote area construction (which China has plenty of), long-range trucking, and even the military. The problem with Nio is that they aren't even exploring these obvious applications.
so why have multiple car companies in china signed on to the swap alliance, some are going to be doing swap tech cars as early as next year. Fast charging is great yes, but it degrades the battery also. Not a problem to throw away a cheap car once the battery is dead, but for more expensive car that's not going to go down well. bear in mind that China have just included battery health in the annual checkup to get your inspection sticker.
I don't think we will ever be able to charge our cars from empty to full in 3 minutes. Like everyone else, NIO also has fast charging but only them have battery swap technology.
Nonsense. Fast charging made battery swapping obsolete some time ago. Also, I checked and it turns out that battery swapping was a stupid idea all along.
