You're so right. Many comedians joke about race, physical appearances and such and you and everybody else laugh because y'all think the jokes are so over the top that there can't be an ounce of truth in them. Right? Still your gut tells you "but what if?". When Don berates someone you NEVER get that gut feeling. You only feel love and warmth and happiness. (Maybe it's because your gut is occupied from bouncing up and down with laughter.) Tbh, the more I see of Don, and Dick, the more fall in love with these magnificent human beings.
I have never seen Don as soft and kind as he was here toward Beverly Sills. It shows so well the humanity and humility of this great man of comedy. Likely just a really great guy for real. Thank you for posting and sharing this video
3:30 "I gave up sucking my thumb a long time ago". "Okay Beverly". I laughed so hard I was slapping my leg to breathe again...Don really let her off easily.
When Rickles died, I went to his website and at the time it of course still showed all the dates he was working. I marvelled that even at that age, he wasn't taking it easy as such (or didn't seem to be), there had been his illness in the year before but he still had dates at places lined up well into the next year. We should be so lucky to have a fraction of the energy he had, the wit and the warmth. One of the greats.
I admire Cavett for taking his lumps from Rickles, and even getting a few in back at him. What fun and respect these two have for each other to do that.
Cavett had previously been a comedy writer for Jack Paar and then Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, so here Rickles is generally respecting the more serious tone of Cavett's show, as a good guest should, like Rickle's observation on censorship, while still ready for some shtick when Cavett gives him an opening!
Seriously, has there been anyone more entertaining than the Don? When he's on my neurons kick into overdrive. Off the cuff funnier than most comics with their well-practiced material.
I've heard that Jonathan Winters and Don Rickles never had anything written down. Everything they said was totally off the top of their head. I also like how he's acerbic to Dick, but so sweet and polite to Beverly.
The ending with "my husband will be there" and Don quickly saying "your husband will be there and my wife will be there and we will work something out" was great. It diffused the awkwardness and he instantly got in front of it by saying "hey look, I didn't meant it as a date, all the respect to your husband and my wife".
Dick Cavett brought the best out of all of his guests. This is one of the best interviews with Don Rickles, ever. Especially when he dropped out of character. Thanks for sharing these videos. Cheers.
Funny,! I meet Rickels at a Emmy dinner,( working VIP), serving Champagne. Standing waiting at the Bar,.I said" isent it amazing how well the bartender cope with the stress off so Manny attendes" later discovered he gave my friend , bartender a 200$ tip. And, he waited a long time....says it all, about comedy/persona🇺🇸🇩🇰❤️🦅
Yeah I never heard of him before I've obviously seen him in movies and the like. But I never knew his comedic stuff growing up in England we never saw shows like this. Also been watching a lot of Rodney Dangerfield and various other people in interviews like Cavetts Carson Letterman and Leno's it seems to me that late night hosts after these have become formulaic and a bit too partisan in there political rhetoric. Which is their right and free choice but it seems they would better serve there purpose if they remained neutral and let the guest show their side and opinions
I still can't believe he's gone. I laughed at his rapid fire wise-cracking since I was a kid. In one interview, Don did tell of a mobster fuming at a crack he made at his girlfriend during a show. He told Don he'd be back to take care of it. Friends successfully calmed the guy down.
"Says here, dumb comedian doesn't ask midget questions..." HAHAHAHAHAHA Don Rickles was a VERY funny man, you can find ENDLESS genius clips of him here.
I checked online, and there is nothing that corroborates your assertion that Don Rickles had anything to do with the creation of the Howard Stern Show. Don Rickles was not a radio producer or radio talent scout, and in reading about Howard Stern there is no story from the early years that would suggest that Don had anything to do with getting Howard Stern his break in radio.
What's most impressive is that according to the current description this show apparently aired on April 13, 197. I really didn't know just how far back these guys went. I bet Rickles killed in Pannonia.
Legend. So were those day's where everyone had thicker skin. Once the 80's passed us by ALL these people that got discipline as kids were oh stuff that i am going to never discipline my kids like that. Now we have soft people who melt in the sun even when it's night time.
I just bought the Cavett book Talk Show and this clip has me so ready to read it. “When did you have you’re first homosexual experience?” Don’t eff with Cavett.
God, Don was a real man. Look at his boots? When guys sit in a chair, their pants go up and you can see socks, like Cavett's, but not Don's. Always elegant and never off the tune.
Asked about getting his wife pregnant, Rickles replied "I put on the robe and circled her" that was an Illumanati sex party reference and a slip there from Rickles! 😮 He wasn't supposed to say that!
Rickles told a lot of corny jokes, that you couldn't even understand, but even those were somehow funny. You just love to see him riff. Too zany to be really mean.
have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other ones.
"Take a hot bath and watch your duck." Only Rickles. And what Don and Miss Sills have to say about how show biz was changing at that time is very interesting.
rickets is not a comedian, and he knows it.....he is a smart guy with good perceptions, and he knows people like to laugh at others when they get exposed....because it always contains truth....he is a decent comic.....who tells unfunny jokes to fill in the place his talent should have been
Why are these so refreshing? I just realized one thing: it was way better, i mean way funnier when the 'careful language' was fearing a sort of conservative, religious group of critics. It's damn near what makes it fun. It's way better than today when the 'opponent' to fear, the critics and language-policing are now the left, the woke church, politically correct cops.

Don Rickles really can knock audiences down. But at the end of every joke he reaches his hand out to pick them up. Such a class act.
Very Well put
Thanks, hockey puck.

It made a profound impact on me the way he ended his shows, he made sure that in the final analysis we NEED to poke fun at ourselves.
I have never seen Don as soft and kind as he was here toward Beverly Sills. It shows so well the humanity and humility of this great man of comedy. Likely just a really great guy for real. Thank you for posting and sharing this video

What does he mean by that really?
ah man I literally was dying laughing. Rickles is the king.
@@timowthie it means he doesn't care
The best timing in comedy of all times, then and now.
I genuinely think this is the most serious and straight to the point Don Rickles interview i’ve seen and somehow I still love it!

Only ones I can think of are Rodney Dangerfield and Robin Williams
Don Rickles was unique in the sense that none of his material was ever written down. No comedian today could duplicate what Don Rickles did .
"Put on the robe and circled her"!!! 🤣🤣🤣
He circled the bed & got an estimate.

The one and only Don Rickles ! I met him later in his life during a "meet and greet" before one of his shows.
What a great man . RIP Don !

So refreshing to know I lived when this kind of show represented our culture instead of the junk and propaganda we have now.
We will never see the likes of him again. When comedy truly was comedy!

Don Rickles, a true legend of comedy. We miss that humour today when times made people so sensitive and weak.
Most people are still ok with it, you just have to be funny...
Don Rickles and Beverly Sills. That kind of booking is unimaginable today. What in the name of God happened to Talk Shows?
There were only three networks. No competition for the biggest stars.
2 Talented People
RIP Barbra Rickles, forever in our hearts.
Don Rickles inventing the Howard Stern Show in this clip.

Until they pulled the camera back, I legit thought the corner of Beverly Sills' dress was a flag.
