    My wife & I went on the QE2 in 2003! It left NYC for a 31 day double transatlantic plus Mediterranean cruise! We only did the 15 day Med portion of the cruise because we weren't sure
    whether we could stand 7 days at sea & flew both ways! By then, we had been on some 30 cruises but this ocean liner, not cruiseship, exceeded every expectation! Even though it was some 34 years old then, the ship looked nearly "brand new"! The only problem for us was having to get 'dressed up' nearly every night, it gets boring after a week or so!

      Back in the day of the great liners, people traveled with "Steamer Trunks" to hold all the clothes needed just to cross the ocean. In one book I've read about liners, a gentleman was required to changes clothes on a ship four times a day. I think that was in "The Sway of the Grand Saloon, A Social History of the North Atlantic." by John Malcolm Brinnin.

    Seen the QE2 many times.
    The first time was as a 15 year old lad, and I was in a Royal Navy coach on my way from Southwick (HMS Dryad) going towards Portsmouth.
    The ship was just rounding Bembridge on the Isle of Wight heading towards Nab tower and out to sea. Even from a good 5 miles or so off , she was really moving fast and was an impressive sight.
    Years later she was docked at Southampton as I went past her on the I.O.W. ferry, and she looked small against the cruise ships.
    But she was a liner, very capable of ploughing through the North Atlantic at speed which was what she was designed for.
    I saw her being launched on TV, and when she went as a troop transport to and from the Falklands war.
    A lovely ship.

    • @THypher1

      She was towed both to and from dry dock, her machinery being inoperable for several years now as her seagoing condition deteriorated through the warm layup after the Cape Town venture fell through and then in the cold layup when she was left to gather dust for 2 1/2 years. Dubai have had no reason to maintain her in seagoing, operational condition since the above mentioned Cape Town venture failed in 2009 and they haven't, the end goal being static use only.

      I don't think the new paint is more effective, but it will not be subjected to the same stress and wear as the old paint - but maybe the new paint is more suitable for the hot climate
      As an ocean liner buff I wish the same thing would be done to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. But she probably needs a lot more than just a new paint. QM hasn't even been dry docked once as long as QE2 has existed.

      @hdliggett 4 роки тому +1

      @@sealover5861 *very* late reply. QM was last drydocked in 1970, if im not mistaken, while QE2 was being fitted out. She does need major overhauls that would best be done in a drydock, however the issue is there are no civilian drydocks on the West Coast of the US big enough to accomodate her. (being 1018 feet long) The drydocks her "renovations" were done in was filled up at some point in the 80s, i believe? Nonetheless, Urban Commons has been going to great lengths to repair and renovate her. Shes in the best condition shes been in for a long time.

      It's never too late for good information.
      But QE2 actually did her maiden voyage already on May 2nd 1969
      I believe they would have to bring the dry dock to QM instead by using a floating dry dock. They actually have one in Portland now, the "Vigorous", that is big enough for QM. This dock is indeed "only" 960 feet long, but a floating dry dock can usually carry significantly longer ships than itself.
      An other option would be to build the dock, a cofferdam, around QM.

The ship now looks to be back in perfect condition but why did Carnival let it fall into disrepair ? even the carpet around the famous dance floor was completely thread bare . Thats not the ship , thats poor maintainance . The hull is in perfect condition from the last survey and If it was my ship she would be back in service . I agree with you that she should've been put back on the seas.
      But she isn't in perfect condition. The aluminium superstructure suffers from serious metal fatigue. It would have to be renewed. And a lot of other changes would have to be done to meet the strict new SOLAS 2010 safety regulations. Also the engines are pretty worn after 21 years of service.
      The life expectancy of this ship was actually 25 years, but she sailed almost 40. And she sailed over 5 million nautical miles, more than any other ship ever has done. I think she's well worth her retirement.

      You said It should be... Britain didn't ever care much about saving any of it's own ocean liners. And shipping companies don't want ships that they can't make profit with anymore. It's all about money. QE2 is where they had money to buy her and where they have money to restore and keep her maintained (even if it didn't look so good for some years).
      I'm sure Cunard would've sold her to Britain for less money than Dubai offered, just to keep her "at home" but no one was seriously interested.

    Does anyone know if the QE2 has been kept in an operational condition and could “sail” under her own power or is she confined to the Harbour ?

    • @THypher1
      @THypher1 3 роки тому +1

      QE2's seagoing/propulsion machinery has been inoperable for several years now as her seagoing condition gradually deteriorated through the warm layup after the Cape Town venture fell through and then in the cold layup when she was left to gather dust for 2 1/2 years. Dubai have had no reason to maintain her in seagoing, operational condition since the above mentioned Cape Town venture failed in 2009 and they haven't, the end goal being static use only. Her propellers were also cut off at the end of the shafts and the ends of the shafts were capped off during this drydocking - being done to remove a potential source of flooding through the stern glands which could be serious. Her propulsion plant (all 9 diesels mostly intact and the 2 electric motors) is still in place, wisely not removed for stability, trim, and structural integrity reasons as shown and stated by the "big boss" onboard in the Channel Five documentary (here in the UK) filmed onboard last year. Tours of the engine spaces are planned to be offered someday. She has a 6.6kV electrical, water and sewage shore supplies these days.

      QE2's life expectancy was actually only 25 years and she was active for almost 40. The ship, and especially the superstructure, suffers from metal fatique and the diesel engines installed in 1987 have done their job too. And the new strict SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) regulations from 2010 would've demanded a lot of changes too.
      And QE2 has sailed more than 5 million nautical miles, more than ANY other ship in the World. I think she's well worth her retirement.
      Shipping and cruise companies are only interested in making money. She's of an outdated design (even if more sleek and beautiful than any modern boxy ship) and would've needed a lot of changes to stay competitive in the modern cruise market.
      In fact, Cunard put a lot more money on refits and improvements on QE2 during her career that it cost to build her, just to keep her successful for so long.

    • @THypher1
      @THypher1 3 роки тому

      Her condition had deteriorated in the cold layup from early 2013 to mid 2015 and, as a result, before this dry docking her paint was very weathered. Not to mention this drydocking was to prepare her fully for static life in that the propellers were removed and the shafts capped which reduces or eliminates the risk of flooding through the stern glands, various unneeded underwater openings in the hull were also covered over for the same reason, and a new sacrificial anode setup optimised for the static role was fitted - the sacrificial anodes likely needing renewal anyway given her previous drydocking was in early 2013 - 5 years before. This will be her most recent drydocking for quite a few years as static ships don't need to be drydocked as often as their seagoing counterparts.

    • @bigbadtree
      @bigbadtree 4 роки тому

      Yes there are seals/glands that require attention as well as bearings/bushes.
      Props also wear out, even clean water is abrasive and they gradually get thinner as well as cavitation and damage from debris or contact with the river or sea bed. Contact damage is seen less on ships of this size as they're captains don't take risks only traveling in deeper water and ports where there's enough water depth.
