  • Every lathe and turning center needs to have tools and material organized, even in home shops. While getting my midi lathe up and running and tricked out, it became quickly apparent that I was seriously lacking in that department.
There were quick-change tools all over the place, I lost my live center for 2 hours, I kept misplacing my chuck key, and when I started the lathe with my chuck key IN THE CHUCK!!!! I knew that I had to address the mess. That last thing is a sackable offense in every machine shop I have ever been in!
I sourced some remnant 2”x2”x1/8” wall angle iron and stole some 3/4” and 1” pipe from 2 wood working pipe clamps in the shop. I then did a little cutting, some bending, a little atrocious welding, drilled 18+ holes, cleaned, primed, painted (got in trouble for painting in the basement…), and made the Q-C tools holders out of some 1-3/4” aluminum stock left over from my tool board organization build.
It is 32” long, sits at a 55 degree angle, and the chuck key pipe is 2-3/4 ” tall. Let me know if you have another questions about the build.
Below are links to the tools and material I used or are featured in this video. I don't earn anything for the stuff you see in this video - I paid retail for everything and don't get any sort of deal or discount for you clicking on the links below or buying the products. Really. I have just found the sellers/sites to be really helpful or the best bang for my buck.

Nice. Hope it helps a little. et a gear puller, clean and lube ALL the gears. A change gear organizer would be awesome (in my build list). Take a look at Edge Technologies Tools. Check out Blondihacks lathe suggestions: the backing tray chip pan is next level smart.
