Yeah, as someone from Richmond, watching this was wild. I didn't realize that Sweet Frog was a big deal outside of the Richmond area. And hearing him talk about Yapple vs Sweet Frog in Carytown was super funny to me. I honestly don't know anyone who ever went to Yapple - that storefront has been sooooo many things over the years. I was starting to think it might be cursed, but the Indian restaurant that's currently in that spot seems to be holding strong 🤷
Where I am, the boom of bubble tea locations reminds me of what happened with froyo stores (lots of stores often in proximity to another one, and also expensive!). I wonder if they will also eventually fall down the same path…🤔
That was literally the time of the great recession. How's that a good time for people in general? Maybe for you because you were a kid and you innocent
I don’t remember the frozen yogurt craze, just that the characters in the Nickelodeon shows I watched were obsessed with it like victorious and icarly.

When I was in elementary we had a place called yogurt mountain. We would go as a family every Sunday after synagogue. It closed down in 2016 so we started going to the menchies around the corner. Then they closed in 2018. We ended up stopping this tradition because the few places left were too far or on their way to the grave. Some of the best memories there

The touching music towards the end with the slideshow was just *chef kiss* Lol I'm actually recently new to the Froyo game, my fiancé got me into it a couple years ago and we go by OrangeLeaf every chance we get (also filling the cup too much everytime). Great content man!
Lived in Virginia my whole life and I’ve been going to Sweet Frog for probably close to ten years. I had legit no idea it started in Richmond. Go figure! Love the video!
I’m so glad you mentioned TBCY! I’d forgotten that it was a fro yo place and use to go there in the early 2000’s as a kid. Always got the rainbow/psychedelic looking scoops
These videos are somehow always uplifting to me. Even if the topic doesn't seem all that relevant, it's delivered in such an inspirational way. Huge bonus; the music is always, seemingly, perfect!
I remember there used to be a Sweet Frog nearby in my town and I loved going there, but when the pandemic happened it shut down, and I haven’t ever seen one since. But I’m so glad you talked about and showed it off briefly in this video! It brought back lots of memories.
Sam, look at the frozen dessert aisle in supermarkets. People still buy frozen desserts - they just don't want to spend $20 to get 2 cups of frozen yogurt? It just doesn't seem equitable. The fast food restaurants did the same thing - they raised prices on regular food and people walked away. Now these restaurants are starting to reckon with that. The frozen yogurt chains priced themselves out of the market.
It's so funny because I was a teenager in the 2010s to 2015s but because I grew up in Europe I had a vastly different experience with frozen yoghurt. It only became a trend in like 2016-2028 and it wasn't that insane over here
I find this so interesting as someone who grew up in Ireland. We were pretty much untouched by this aside from it's media impact. I remember always seeing it on stuff like Disney Channel or some Cartoon Network stuff.
my family has travelled to vegas a lot (we’re from Canada) and we still make it a point to visit yogurtland at the outlet. Even though it isn’t that good anymore (and overpriced) it’s nostalgic. I also see the same thing currently happening with milk tea, that market has been booming
Emotionally going through a really bad past 3 days. there’s been relationship stuff going on and it’s been keeping me in bed with anxiety. I’m watching videos or trying to find videos to just give me some peace through all the thoughts and waiting, but laying here and reading “it’s going to be okay” on your back drop have me an ounce of hope even for a second. And when you ended the video reminding me again that it was going to be okay I finally held some peace in my mind even for a second I’m glad you are here
It's crazy how fast you've become one of my favorite, if not my favorite UA-camr. With every video it feels like you're trying to make a very enjoyable video while asking how you can make a difference in a truly meaningful way. It's honestly so refreshing and worthy of many more eyes then you currently get. Every time I watch I'm dumbfounded how this amount of care and respect for the topic hasn't equated to more instant success. I beg that you keep being you and stick to it. I can't wait for the day when I'm talking to family and coworker about your latest video because they've become so well known.
Hey Sam, don’t know if you’ll read this, but wanted to thank you for the content. Your positive message at the end of each video is more of what the internet needs. You’re making great content and I really appreciate you and your message. Cheers, JB
blows my mind that you did this in RVA because when i started feeling nostalgic for froyo i went to carytown (2019), and then i see the EXACT SWEETFROG i went to when I was having a panic attack in college, this video hit so deep in so many ways.
I live in Kansas. OrangeLeaf was everywhere. My go-to was wedding cake or cheesecake froyo topped with graham cracker, strawberries, and the pink bubbles that you pop in your mouth. 2010-2013 was the middle and end of college for me. There was a location near my college sweetheart’s townhome, so we went together a lot.

One of my best friends in high school worked at a froyo shop. We quite literally spent every weekend just hanging out there while she worked 😂 helped her close up the shop most nights!
I grew up during the boom and also worked for a small business froyo shop as one of my first jobs in HS and college, worked there for 5 years. What a time to be alive.
Hell man, so glad you mentioned smoke shops. I’m in VA as well and on every street it seems like there’s 2 of them. It’s genuinely insane. No clue how they do business.

love this video dude!! frozen yogurt was such a big part of my childhood but i witnessed 5 froyo shops close down in ~2016. the closest one near me is now a 35 minute drive! i need frozen yogurt to have their comeback
Can you do quick stop stores next? We seem to be in a new trend like froyo had where there is a Wawa on every corner or a royal farms. What makes them so needed what makes them need to be everywhere even down the street from one another.
Penguins was the spot back in the 80s. There was a Warehouse next door, so on Friday and Saturday nights, everyone rented a movie and then stood in line for froyo. It was such a strange experience for me to see Golden Spoon pop up some 20 years later. It looked exactly like Penguins, but red and gold replaced the black and white color scheme. The line was out the door, though, just like I remembered
In Memphis the city and suburbs were covered in Yogurt Mountains in this time period. Was in town a year ago and felt nostalgic so I thought about getting some frozen yogurt only to find they all had closed and only 4 or 5 frozen yogurt places seemed to be left in the entire city. Sad but not unexpected.
Sam, I love your videos, started watching with your Outback in Australia. I have to say that I don’t think you can talk about frozen yogurt with 0:02 out talking about TCBY. It opened in 1981 and spread all over and now still has about 450 locations. In fact it was so popular that they were even a plot point in Seinfeld.
Here in Olympia, Washington, we grew up on Limeberry. Didn't know of a single other brand. It's pretty empty now, but we still go every once in a while.
I was so excited to see this video - I talk about this all the time!! I feel like after the froyo phase (my local fav was Yogurt Mountain) was the cupcake craze. We are seeing somewhat of a cookie craze now due to crumbl and their competitors but none of these have been able to match the oversaturation of the OG, froyo!
In the suburban NJ town where I grew up there were 5 frozen yogurt places within a ~ 2 square mile radius. One of which was shown at 8:46 in this video and the last one to close in our town
I miss going to the mall with my mom or friends and ending the day with a froyo. There's a place on my way home from work and on a super bad day I'll stop and treat myself with some. I love you frozen yogurt. My favorite toppings are gummy worms and mochi, lowkey love how hard to chew the worms get when they're cold.
My middle school hang out spot was a fro-yo place. In high school we didn't go quite as frequently, but still on occasion. They even had a fro-yo place in Meknes, Morocco I went to in 2018. Truly a phenomenon. Just looked it up, the one we went to (the first one to open here) is still around, but all the others closed after the boom. I think we had 4 or 5 at the peak in like 2015 before they started shutting down. They all had the Green-Pink-Orange theming.
i’ve had frozen yogurt many times from grocery stores, but last weekend was my first time actually going into a frozen yogurt shop (and i loved it btw) it’s funny this pops up in my recommended cause finally going in person also made me think about the froyo craze of the 2010s
Different episodes are good; Variety is key. Really like the "best wings" episodes and was excited to see the latest one. Keep up the good work; I remember subscribing when you had less than 20k subscribers, so your channel is booming now. And funny when they were advertising frozen yogurt as 'heathy". As a kid growing up in the 80's I vividly remember the switch to getting yogurt over ice cream big time and it was hilarious when Seinfeld did the episode on the frozen yogurt.
Strangely enough, froyo shops have had a resurgence in popularity where I'm from. It was the in thing in the early to mid 2010's and then was replaced by tea and boba shops just up until recently, and then had a resurgence again in the last 3-4 years
Where are you from? I read a comment on this video that Froyo has become popular in Australia so it might be a more American thing for Froyo to lose popularity.
My wife and I were HUGE fans of Yogurtland. She was the Foursquare Mayor of a Yogurt Land we frequented back in 2011-2012. Yogurtland closed down all their locations in our area in 2020, likely due to Covid among other reasons. When we made a froyo trip part of our trip itinerary. Now, our closest froyo place, wgich is decent, is 15 minutes away. I miss the early 2010's!
Growing up in upstate NY, we had sweet frogs everywhere. Use to go there with my family all the time. Took a girl I was dating to the closest location to me back in 2023. Unsure if that location is still open today. But the memories of the frozen yogurt craze will always be in my mind
I think the frozen yogurt place by my parent's house is still open... which is a miracle considering it's wedged between two different ice cream places. But it definitely had more customers in the 2010s and I remember my sister taking me there sometimes.
i can’t believe how good the youtube algorithm is i’ve been wondering this question and missing menchies and other chains around me and im like “where’d they all go” so thank you for your video lol
I love the variety of Sam's channel! From the way too long best wings in every state series, to eating nothing but Taco Bell for a month and now an in-depth history of frozen yogurt that no one asked for! And I'm here for all of it! There is a great Seinfeld episode about frozen yogurt. Love the content Sam! Keep it coming and remember, it's going to be ok!

@@sophialwei It's funny. In California, the boba boom was before the Froyo boom. Around 2001-2008. I think the popular thing is the crumbl cookie fad.
Same! I grew up in Cali but I moved to Vegas around 13 years ago. I've consistently gotten boba with my friends in both places.
2009-2015 was the peak of life. class of 2015 here and I remember always leaving school and driving straight to menchies with my friends
2009-15 was horrible. The economy was still recovering from 2008 and quality of life has still not recovered in many places (mine) from 2008
Same boat.
lol this mf peaked in high school
That was literally the time of the great recession. How's that a good time for people in general? Maybe for you because you were a kid and you innocent
The peak of life? lol no, not everyone peaked in high school..
I don’t remember the frozen yogurt craze, just that the characters in the Nickelodeon shows I watched were obsessed with it like victorious and icarly.

@@anayaj7163 I really didn’t ask. Not everyone is a delusional heretic who thinks fairy tales are real. Grow up.
When I was in elementary we had a place called yogurt mountain. We would go as a family every Sunday after synagogue. It closed down in 2016 so we started going to the menchies around the corner. Then they closed in 2018. We ended up stopping this tradition because the few places left were too far or on their way to the grave. Some of the best memories there
On a Sunday?
Jewish person here. Maybe the commenter meant after Hebrew school class on Sundays? 🤔
@@jillsarah7356 Maybe? I'm not Jewish (unless a lame ass 2% Ashkenazi from dad actually counts), so I was very confused 🤣

I have the best memories going on froyo dates during my first serious relationship in the early 2010s. Nothing will ever compare to the innocent joy of young love froyo dates.
Living in Richmond and seeing you be in Henrico was a trip!! In Cary St now Sweetfrog is still there (somehow) and Yapple is now a fancy lil Indian restaurant called Tulsi - thanks for the RVA shoutout and for teaching more about local history!
Feels really weird seeing you in Richmond, VA and immediately recognizing where you are lol. That’s so neat!
The editing on this felt like a 90's doco with better graphics; it was everything I didn't know I needed. 11/10.

The touching music towards the end with the slideshow was just *chef kiss* Lol
I'm actually recently new to the Froyo game, my fiancé got me into it a couple years ago and we go by OrangeLeaf every chance we get (also filling the cup too much everytime).
Great content man!
Music at 8:37 just made me burst out laughing. Like why is this so melodramatic? 😅
0:42 Sam just used “respectively” in spoken communication… what a gentleman and a scholar. This is why I watch, like, and subscribe.
It only became a trend in like 2016-2028 and it wasn't that insane over here
And I mean that's Europe. Which is the closest region to follow US trends next to northern America I think
Your from the future
@@chianghighshrek😂
I find this so interesting as someone who grew up in Ireland. We were pretty much untouched by this aside from it's media impact. I remember always seeing it on stuff like Disney Channel or some Cartoon Network stuff.
UA-cam recommending this video today after I have been craving FroYo for a week is crazy business. 😭
my family has travelled to vegas a lot (we’re from Canada) and we still make it a point to visit yogurtland at the outlet. Even though it isn’t that good anymore (and overpriced) it’s nostalgic.
I also see the same thing currently happening with milk tea, that market has been booming
Whats crazy is I don't remember this, because the region I live in PA is famous for water ice, so we had more of a boom of that during this time.
And when you ended the video reminding me again that it was going to be okay I finally held some peace in my mind even for a second
I’m glad you are here
I’m glad you’re here too! Rooting for you
It's crazy how fast you've become one of my favorite, if not my favorite UA-camr.
Cheers,
JB
blows my mind that you did this in RVA because when i started feeling nostalgic for froyo i went to carytown (2019), and then i see the EXACT SWEETFROG i went to when I was having a panic attack in college, this video hit so deep in so many ways.

Menchie’s was always a fun experience and had color changing magic sprinkles. ✨✨✨
Tutti Fruti was my introduction to froyo and flavors like Taro. 💜
I grew up during the boom and also worked for a small business froyo shop as one of my first jobs in HS and college, worked there for 5 years. What a time to be alive.
My friend and I were JUST talking about this. What good timing
Getting emotional during a video about the decline of the frozen yogurt industry was not on my bingo card for today... I love this channel.
Menchie's cake batter will forever be my favourite dessert 💔
SAME!!!! I have so many memories eating that…
lol y’all don’t have one near y’all’s
@@mlw9195 I do it’s only like 10 minutes away where I live
Hell man, so glad you mentioned smoke shops. I’m in VA as well and on every street it seems like there’s 2 of them. It’s genuinely insane. No clue how they do business.
Red Mango was the place to be in my social circle 😆 but also Orange Leaf was big too. I haven’t heard of some of the others you mentioned
RIP Berries, the best frozen yogurt spot in the San Gabriel Valley. I still think about your purple walls and Cold Stone-style mix-ins far too often
I love your videos so much. It's insane! You make the best videos, you seem so positive and are so awesome! You are by far the best UA-camr on the platform, and I can't wait to see you blow up even more than you have! Thank you for entertaining us and for being so positive! Love this video just like the rest of them!
i love how this video is formatted i am so intrigued and i have never thought about how froyo was boomin in the 2010’s
This guys production is top tier. Menchies was goated fr
I’m an Aussie and this craze went absolutely global - I still remember the Pinkberry theme song off by heart, despite being countries away from a PB 😂
I really enjoyed this video. I would definitely love to see more content like this from you.
2:26 That statement right there is the epitome of the American food landscape
I hear Inside Edition calling! This episode is so good Sam!!
love this video dude!! frozen yogurt was such a big part of my childhood but i witnessed 5 froyo shops close down in ~2016. the closest one near me is now a 35 minute drive! i need frozen yogurt to have their comeback
YoPo on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill! Cornerstone of my college days, and still alive and kicking!
i moved from hong kong to australia recently and I'm so glad that there are still froyo places here cuz I still loved froyo a ton
Seinfeld predicted this 10 years before it happened
In Memphis the city and suburbs were covered in Yogurt Mountains in this time period. Was in town a year ago and felt nostalgic so I thought about getting some frozen yogurt only to find they all had closed and only 4 or 5 frozen yogurt places seemed to be left in the entire city. Sad but not unexpected.
Hi Sam! Havent watched it yet but I’m sure this video will be a banger like everything else you do!
I love at the end when Sam says it's gonna be okay. It's my favorite thing!
Sam posts. I hit the like button, I watch, I comment.
Found this video randomly and as a Richmonder was hype to see my childhood movie theatre (and old Sweet Frog) in it! Hell yeah. Great video 🙂
The nostalgia of this video hit hard. I was indeed engulfed in the froyo boom & it was amazing. Had so many dates at my local spot(s). Lol.
i’ve had frozen yogurt many times from grocery stores, but last weekend was my first time actually going into a frozen yogurt shop (and i loved it btw)
it’s funny this pops up in my recommended cause finally going in person also made me think about the froyo craze of the 2010s
Another amazing Sam Reid video! I remember my Grandma taking me and my Sister to Tops Yogurt on the last day of school.
2:00 LIVING FOR THIS MONTAGE
My first job was at a froyo shop, and froyo will always have a special place in my heart.
