🦘 I flew halfway across the world to eat at Outback Steakhouse - all so I could bring you a review of the food served at an Australian themed American restaurant located in Australia by an American.

Plot twist, the Outback Steakhouse in Aspley you went to ironically was a Lone Star Steakhouse previously many years ago, and was popular back then. Only scratched the surface of things. Sauce on the pies and sausage rolls is next level. And next time you must explore the pubs and their food, that's where the real outback steakhouses are.

Yes, a meat pie is usually eaten with a big dob of tomato sauce splashed on top. And as my father (who was an Irish immigrant) taught me as a kid, the measure of a true-blue Aussie was being able to eat a pie with sauce one-handed (and these were the old-school mass-produced square "footy pies" with a runny mince & gravy filling and a thin, soggy pastry base served in a shallow & fragile foil tray) without spilling the whole lot down the front of your shirt and into your lap; the reason why it was essential that you be able to achieve this one-handed was because you'd [naturally] be holding a frosty can of beer in the other hand.

Outback was opened because a group of rich dudes wanted a spot to have drinks and a steak after a round of golf. It got it's theme becase Crocodile Dundee was SUPER popular while they were hatching their genius plan to eat and drink for free by building their own restaurant. I worked for one, and the brand is very proud of it's origin story, and it's a central part of the onboarding process when you're hired. Another fun detail that they're weirdly proud of-- an inventor local to their original location loved it and wanted to help them streamline the Bloomin Onion. He fabricated a customized potato cutter (like for fries). They didn't accept his invention because they didn't think it was worth paying for it (he offered it up VERY cheap). He spent so much time on it and had no other use for it, so he just gave it to them for free with 0 contract etc. Naturally they immediately got a patent and now it's a cornerstone part of their very dumb lore...

But you also explain your side well, take the opportunity to experience their culture even if it's at the surface, and have the time of your life with something that many could say was a once in a lifetime experience.

Other than that, yep our food is what you'd find in the US or UK. Our bread doesn't tend to be as sweet as bread in the US.That pie looked like about a 6 to me too but the best pies are from Yatala - just off the freeway half way from Gold Coast to Brisbane. Mate, we're not that particular about 'standing on ceremony'/ being exact, unless we're engineering stuff. Our golden rule is: "She's right mate!" Pies & sausage rolls depend on the skill of the cook of course, but yeah, we love em', along with Turkish kebabs, Thai/ Asian, Greek, Italian & Aussie lamb/beef/seafood barbecues. Outback Steakhouse I've eaten there once. For an American tourist you seemed able to pack in so much for such a short visit - well done son. After about a month or two, if you can afford the accommodation & some quality food, many don't want to leave. Coffee here, is IB, the best by world standards thanks mostly to the Italian and Greek migrants who came to Oz after WWII. In the late 1950/60's they brought us European cuisine, proper coffee and liqueurs. Many came with great a work ethic & managed to carve out a new life away from the devastation of Europe after WWII. You did some excellent close-ups of kangaroos, endearing critters unless one comes through your windscreen at 110km/h, or a wombat takes out your entire front suspension. They keep tow truck operators quite busy. I was a kid in the 1950/60's and we watched a lot of American content and cartoons. FYI: Many cartoons like the Flintstones, except for the voice overs, were drawn & produced right here in Oz... along with movies and awesome music from the 1970's to this day. So yep, there's solid American & British connections in Aussie culture. These two cultures control considerable interests 'down-under', not that I subscribe to a spinning earth theory, or being held captive upside-down by gravity 🙃, it's buoyancy, not gravity that keeps us grounded, despite the academic brainwashing. Anyway, thumbs up for a well produced/ presented UA-cam. Our American brothers are always (well usually) most welcome to our shores. Cheers from Sydney, AU.

idk i love how earnest you are about learning about australian food, culture, and pronunciations. this video is so well done and makes me keen to go back up to queensland

I am Australian, the algorithm kept pushing this to me, and I am happy it did. You are good at covering information succinctly without it being too simple. You explained the Bunnings snag without even tasting it better than most! Good job algorithm!

Sam this was a wonderful and respectful showcase of my home country - honestly one of the best I’ve seen. Your presentation style (as always) is just a delight to watch. I appreciate you taking the time to engage with a small piece of Indigenous culture as this is something often overlooked in travel videos to Australia - the traditional custodians of this land deserve our respect.
It’s a shame you didn’t get to spend much time in Melbourne (the city I call home) as we’re known for our culture of sport, live music, food, and art! And also our trams!! And Victoria is just teeming with amazing national parks. I hope you come back again soon to visit! You’re always welcome 🩷

I didn't have much hope that this would not be just another American flies to Australia and gets everything wrong, video but I'm glad I watched it. I enjoyed that, mate and one of the most accurate, fair and insightful in terms of understanding our particular sensibilities about things broadly, I have ever watched - across all video content genres.
Well done. Subbed. You're very likable. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
    Subbed.

Yes "shrimp on the barbie " is from that commercial and from the guy in the commercial, Paul hogan. he used that phrase on australian TV in a comedy show and was asked to be a tourism ambassador and use it in ads for american TV. it led to him becoming famous here and even got him a few movies.

Great Video Sam! I'm from Australia and love your videos. I would have never thought you would make any videos Australia-related. I'm a massive AFL fan and am so glad you attended a game. To me, it is the greatest game on the planet.
When I first watched a video of yours I read your Chanel name and thought "There is an AFL player with the same name" Never did I imagine that an American like yourself would stumble upon his existence. Interestingly enough, my Dad actually provided piano lessons to Sam Reid of the Sydney Swans over 20 years ago.

I don’t usually watch videos all the way through because they all began with the same sort of content but you really have a great way to make it feel like interesting and fun, enjoyable and you manage to get my attention all the way throughout your video, very well done 👍🏻 and I love it so much, thank you for sharing this amazing experience and blessings!!!

Mate you did great!! Thanks for coming to visit my home town of Cairns and showcasing it like you did, a great job. The reason you saw folks at the footy match eating a pie with sauce on it, is because they are the ones right out of the freezer commonly known here as a mystery bag (Aussie slang)! horse meat and god knows what else is in them and the sauce is what gives it the flavour, the ones you ate are the good versions made in house from quality ingredients! Sad to say when I was travelling around your great country back in 2014 the Coffee scene was really crook and the best coffee we found was at Maccas in Times Square was Caffè latte served out of an automated machine!

the great part about australia being in the southern hemisphere is that even when the onions aren't bloomin' in the north you can hop on a plane to eat a freshly bloomed onion.

The fruit at 21.36 is a passion fruit. The passion fruit (Portuguese: maracujá and Spanish: maracuyá, both from the Tupi mara kuya "fruit that serves itself" or "food in a cuia") is the fruit of a number of plants in the genus Passiflora.
