You guys impulse getting a pedicure is a perfect example of how walkability is really good for local businesses! The easier it is to pop into a local store the better they do, and the stronger their competition is against large chains.
I'm allll about impulsive pedicures and supporting local businesses 💅💃 but FYI please don't go to the salon with open wounds 😅 it's a bad time for everybody
I have lived in Fayetteville for almost 2 decades. And they are not exaggerating how bad it is to walk here. There's rarely any crosswalks, sidewalks are damn near non existent, and cats blow through red lights routinely. So even if you cross a red light it's still not safe. It's insanely dangerous walking around this city, and they were right it's not handicap accessible. I'm really hoping someone higher up sees this video and helps take action to make this city easier and safer to walk.
They won't. The population is too transient or aged to care, and all the people they would pay attention to live out in Cameron or Southern Pines. 15 years with Fayetteville as the buzzing neon sign outside my window, 12 living in that Deep Space 9-ass city.
Why wait? Start talking with your city council and planners, attending meetings and expressing concern. Encourage other similarly minded people to do the same. Request sidewalks and crosswalks with lights be added. Work on getting benches, bike racks, et cetera, installed in public places to encourage walking and biking. Then maybe you can even try more ambitious efforts, like expanding public transportation, adding protected bike lanes, and reducing minimum parking lot ordinances.
I don't think it can be made better. Maybe they can make some small changes here and there but the city is fundamentally designed for the car, all the roads are huge, distances are too far to walk. If there is no reason to walk then people won't. This can only be changed with the type of change that is not welcome and that people actively resist out of pure ignorance, like restricting access for cars, smaller roads, mixed zoning, denser housing, bicycle lanes.

As someone who lived Fayetteville for a short time, and never owned a car while I lived there, them being at the bottom of the list for walkability makes a ton of sense to me. Everything is SO spread out. Made looking for a job super tough being limited to things that I could reasonably walk to if needed. Ended up settling on something that was close to an hour one way, at a pretty good pace. Not the craziest I’ve ever heard of, but not fun. Especially getting out late at night, cause that’s not the best city to be wandering around at night in either.

2:35 Funny enough, that "sidewalk that made no sense" was most likely designed that way to be ADA-compliant. There are newer guidelines too called PROWAG that stipulate maximum grades for sidewalks without handrails, and sometimes they have to be designed like that to meet that maximum grade. Sometimes they have to end up weird like that, but occasionally the designers just don't do the best job. Either way, as a civil engineer, I always do what I can to make sure pedestrians and bikes are included/considered in my work when I have the chance.
As someone who walks i think i can speak for all of us in appreciating engineers like you trying to keep walk and bikeability in mind when doing your jobs, and i know for a fact we could use more engineers like you

I walked a lot as a kid but only occasionally walk as an adult. Walking can be very enjoyable, you miss so much in a car that you don't realize when zooming past things.
As someone who lives in a city with a walk score of 29 apparently it's a big difference. At least we have sidewalks everywhere and crosswalks on major roads.
It’d be cool for Sam to flesh the powerups and debuffs out and make it accessible to the public, then do more of these challenges in other locations. It’ll be a fun way to explore a new area for anyone who wants to travel to anywhere he goes for these challenges! Imagine doing this with friends or family as part of a vacation
Always love your videos, I did see the route for power ups you took seems to have taken you around the edge of the city, did you feel like you missed out not seeing the downtown?
Now imagine walking this many mile 4 times a week and that's what its like for many people to work at Amazon. The most I did in a day was 20 miles and it was terrible.
I think it's very rare for any towns in Europe to have this kind of problem. Pretty much all towns/cities (no matter how small or large and no matter the country) are walkable (i.e. there are sidewalks and pedestrian crossings in most places where needed). Whether in Sweden, Poland, Slovakia or Czechia (the countries I'm most familiar with), there is no problem to walk around a town/city. Sure, not all small roads have sidewalks and pedestrian crossings but in those cases there's no usually no such need. Sure, sometimes the sidewalk is narrow (since the street might be narrow) but usually there's a wider sidewalk on the other side.
New Orleans is pretty bad about this too. The railroad station cuts the city in half and the only way to get across is a overpass bridge or walking miles around
I lived in the Bronx and on Long Island before later moving down south to the Carolinas. It took years but I’m now used to walking along highways and having sidewalks disappear. I guess making it difficult to walk or go for a run is a Southern thing.
I used to drop my car off for maintenance and walk to the office in suburban Detroit. My secret to not getting run over was to carry a brightly colored umbrella and wave it around. In Salt Lake City they put orange flags on both ends of wider streets so you can wave them for improved visibility.

This needs to be a series. I'd be up for watching you do this in Chesapeake Virginia.
Sam & Preston. An out of control duo. Love it!
Sam is stupidly genius and I love it. Keep it up Sam!
This is one of my fav vids so far. Love the Jetlag inspo. More game episodes like this would be great!! Been so sick seeing the progression of this channel over the last year, huge props for all the growth !!
As someone who walks i think i can speak for all of us in appreciating engineers like you trying to keep walk and bikeability in mind when doing your jobs, and i know for a fact we could use more engineers like you
I love when a new video drops! I just finished this episode and never thought I'd enjoy watching people walking around. LOL. Preston's energy with each honk was inspiring, but I loved the upbeat attitude you two kept up despite the heat and long journey. You seriously should have millions of subscribers - your content is great! Looking forward to the next one...
As always, I can't stop smiling while I watch a video of yours, Sam. Preston was a huge contributor this time though - he has such great energy! Thanks for everything that you do.
Sam, I am just rooting for you! No matter the challenge…just fun to watch. Thanks!
As a Fayetteville area resident I knew the city was bad, but I didn't know it was literally the least walkable lol
31:33 - I wouldn't be able to handle that. His excitement about each honk he got was by far the best part of the video, but at what cost?
7:14 “if you can drive in this city, you can drive anywhere” - my brother in Christ, if you can WALK in that city, you can walk anywhere. Great vibes from Preston!! 😂
Sorry, no. I am disabled but can walk. I wear braces that support my legs and let me tell you, half of their trek I couldn't do simply because there is no pavement or even ground. :(
@@MnemonicSyntax Well, her statment still stands true then.
I love how he always has ideas for improvement or numbers for people if they have mental health issues, etc. He genuinely cares about people. This day looked like so much fun for them! They are both such good sports! Another awesome video!
As a disabled wheelchair dude, I would perish on the first corner
Two such happy dudes in duch a hellish environment.
I’ve loved Sam’s channel since I saw the Wing videos while also being a huge JetLag fan. So glad to see Sam is as well!
I was the one that made those street signs, over and over. It was my idea to put those signs way up there.
I have no idea how Feyetteville could be worse than Houston, TX. I’d love to see you try this down this way
I will say, Houston is pretty rough! I tried to skate around that city once and it was IMPOSSIBLE! 🤣
@@PrestonGriffin it’s like all highways. There’s no way. Good job surviving the skate
Houston has 3 metro train lines and a bus system that covers a decent area, it sucks but it could be worse compared to feyetteville
Houston has some public transit Fayetteville has nothing
I walked a lot as a kid but only occasionally walk as an adult. Walking can be very enjoyable, you miss so much in a car that you don't realize when zooming past things.
Honestly, it's good you made this video, it might very well cause for improvements within that city!
Why are your videos so amazing man! You are so under rated I love your stuff!
Keep it up Sam! Seeing your growth over the last couple months has been so inspiring.
Always love your videos, I did see the route for power ups you took seems to have taken you around the edge of the city, did you feel like you missed out not seeing the downtown?
14:33 "an intersection that has 2 waffle houses on opposite corners" i mean to be fair that intersection is about a mile wide soooo
I really love your channel. Every video is just so wholesome, Unique and I get to learn a thing or two while watching.
Now imagine walking this many mile 4 times a week and that's what its like for many people to work at Amazon. The most I did in a day was 20 miles and it was terrible.
Fayetteville sucks. I saw J Cole’s house & got rear ended lol. Keep up the great work Sam & Preston!
Bring forced to dangerously cross an intersection is so demeaning to anyone not in a car. Shameful on the city for this terrible infrastructure
Preston feels like the perfect person to do this sort of challenge with. Such a great energy 😅
This is definitely my favorite video of yours so far!
So good Sam!!!! Getting scooters back in the garage ASAP after this bc you never know when you might need them!!
Yall 2 chemistry was off the chain hope to see another collab
New Orleans is pretty bad about this too. The railroad station cuts the city in half and the only way to get across is a overpass bridge or walking miles around
The amount of effort put into these challenge videos is unmatched! Great video as always!
I love Preston's positive energy!
I lived in the Bronx and on Long Island before later moving down south to the Carolinas.
It took years but I’m now used to walking along highways and having sidewalks disappear. I guess making it difficult to walk or go for a run is a Southern thing.
So good. Great vibes. Smiled throughout watching.
Now you have to do this in the most walkable city with the same distance
I used to drop my car off for maintenance and walk to the office in suburban Detroit. My secret to not getting run over was to carry a brightly colored umbrella and wave it around. In Salt Lake City they put orange flags on both ends of wider streets so you can wave them for improved visibility.
Preston legit seems like the kind of guy you'd want to do any sort of challenge with.
What a depressing place to live. Feels so inhumane.
Lol, you might want to visit other parts of the world if you think this is "depressing"
@@manne8575relatively speaking in the US, you are at the bottom of the barrel if you need to waste 1.5 or more hrs walking on these stroads to get some groceries and carry them back. I know from experience and feels very depressing to be that broke. At least third world countries still have good urbanism
@GirtonOramsay You are the kind of person that should definitely live in a third world country for a year and then we will see if you still think that
@@manne8575 you act like you are saying that isn't already obvious. We are talking about American pedestrians relative to the majority of American drivers, not some random poor country where you can still walk to get some food or clothes easily
@@manne8575 I've in Mexico City and a couple cities of Chile, they were way better in this than Fayettesville.
My dudes....I was born and raised here, and except for a stint in Florida have lived here all my life. I am laughing AND cringing. At only 7:49 minutes in I am just hoping you survive. And I'm being serious.
I lived here for most of my life and I now live in one of the most walkable cities in the country (PDX) and seeing this made me appreciate being able to walk to the store so much more (i do miss biscuitville and cookout so bad tho) ALSO WEINER WORKS.... don't know what you got til its gone
Yea, leaving Fayetteville as a kid and coming back as an adult has made me realize how garbage it is for pedestrians. Can't wait to live somewhere where I can walk places again!
As always, a wonderful video. Excellent quality and 10/10 entertaining
Sam you have to do this again! this was fantastic- such a very interesting study on the actual livability of our cities today and how that impacts our communities! please keep tackling that list !
