My biggest tip is, State Of Mind. You just have to be very zen and relaxed before and during a long flight, there can be delays and annoying passengers, but if you are in the right frame of mind they won't bother you as much. Starting out on the right foot also helps a lot, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and clear check-in and getting to the correct gate. If you're relaxed when you finally make it to your seat the entire travel day will be easier.
Sorry I didn’t scroll through all the comments before chiming in: if you can wear them, compression socks are great for your flight. My other tip is, if you arrive anytime during daylight hours at your destination, immediately take a cool or warm shower and get outside under the sun! You need that sun exposure to reset your internal clock, and the cool/warm shower will help pep you up to take advantage of the daylight rather than just crashing.
My long haul flight tips (from a fearful flier!!) -I have a game called Asphault 8, it's a racing game. Great for turbulence. When you need to focus on the road/driving, you tend to bounce with the turbulence instead of against it. This game has saved me so many times. no I don't work for them lol -Get up and move around a lot. Go to the bathroom, book aisle seats (screw the view on a long haul!) walk around. Stretch, it's way better than sitting the whole time -Make sure you DONT WATCH your fave show for weeks in advance. Save it for the flight! Omg you just pissed away 3 hours watching it? Good, the closer you are now to your destination! -Good headphones, with an app like "rain" or "ocean noises" or whatever you're used to. I'm from Canada, so I like the one that is like rain on a tent. Whatever it takes to at least try and get you relaxed if you want to try sleeping on a plane (I cant) - Don't watch the monitor with the plane icon creeping towards the destination. nope. Maybe if you're within a couple hours you can watch it but otherwise it's just depressing -Keep a bag with all the goodies you need, and pack it before you get on the plane. No, not before you leave home. Before you get on the plane. Put your headphones, snacks, water, gum, etc in it so you can easily access it and you're not one of those ####holes rummaging around in the overhead bins every two seconds. -Say hello to your seat mate, even if just for a second You're sitting together for the duration, so be polite (from a Canadian ) - Think about your enjoyable holiday overseas, and how MOST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WILL NEVER GET TO EXPERIENCE THIS LUXURY (of being packed in like sardines with leg cramps and turbulence, but still. I digress. It's a luxury.) -
I always bring a large scarf. It is not only useful as a scarf, but as a blanket or pillow. Don't waste precious luggage space bringing an actual blanket.
Concierge Courtyard Apparently they may be re-bagged but not washed so may be covered in nasty bacteria. A blanket doesn’t have to go in your luggage as it isn’t going to be under the seat or in the overhead bin. It’ll be with you in your seat. Throw it around your shoulders before boarding your plane. It maybe could serve as a beach blanket as well. However I also like your idea of a large or blanket scarf.
I have a soft and warm blanket from Vera Bradley that folds into a pillow that has a strap that you can either attach to your luggage or easily carry. It’s very compact and is a must have on any flight for me.
i have two really nice blankets for flights. one packs up in a small pillow shape, the other is really tiny when packed. they are so much better than those you get on the flight.
FYI, if you get on a flight and your monitor doesn't work, you can ask for a voucher for a refund/rebate from the airline to compensate since the price of your ticket included use of the monitor. the refund can vary between airlines. I never knew this until someone mentioned it to me and when it happened and I asked for the voucher, I got $25 voucher because the monitor was broken.
I've seen the lady across the isle & a few rows head of me as she took her seat, apologizing to everyone about her nasty cold. Yet, didn't do anything to contain herself, wipe hands after blowing, eating etc. even put her used tissues directly into the seat back pockets, etc. I've seen a grown man swipe his nose after sneezing into his hands & wipe it along the outside of the seat in front of him just as I offered him my napkin. I've held hands with a few people to help them during heavy turbulence, one didn't speak english. I don't know their hygien habits. That foot strap mentioned, think where feet have been, did she put her shoes on it, then socks, where did she walk etc. A lot of things are picked up from the floor (people cough, sneeze, etc.) & did they think to wipe it down before picking it up with their hands & showing it to us? Children eat treats, etc. & smear stuff all over as they're also playing with their seat mates. A over tired 6-ish year old girl sitting in the middle seat next to me (isle) full on wet her pants/seat due to delays arriving at the gate. On one flight, we had an international marathon runner on her way to S. America. She (& travel partner) were accepting (verbal only) well wishes while wiping down the seats, etc. & the two others in her row. It's a amazing what you'll touch let alone when traveling in places or even going to concerts, etc. Seats, bins, hand rails, etc. many touched the side of the plane upon entry, then there's the dry air nose tickle. Before you now it, you could have brought something & shared it with others. Point is, things travel and in mysterious ways.
@@conciergecourtyard4590 Not even close to neurotic. There is nothing worse than planning a beautiful 2 week once in a lifetime vacation only to have it ruined 3 days in because you caught something from the plane. I was sick for almost half my last trip and, when you're already on a tight schedule, wanting to vomit / being unable to breathe / and feeling like crap is no bueno.
One thing I would suggest is to have a well-organized carry on. Have a separate zippered pouch in it with the things that you anticipate using during the flight that you can pull out of your carry on to have with you at your seat before stowing your bag in the bin. That way you don't always have to get out of your seat all the time to get your bag down to try to find something, possibly disturbing others.
jf76 I had small see through bag with allowed liquid, small hand sanitizer, saline nasal spray for dry air, eye drops, toothbrush travel toothpaste. Metal water bottle to fill up that keeps things hot or cold. Other small mesh zipper bag, 2 back up battery packs fully charged and cables, tissues, baby wipes travel size. Easy to pull in and out of my backpack which is used as carry on bag and day pack at destination.a large scarf, or hooded fleece zip jacket, very light but warm on flights 96% freezing.
We are not BIG travelers but have done a couple overseas flights. This coming October we are going to New Zealand for a month! 2 milestone Birthdays & Wedding Anniversary! We also use Compression socks-a couple things to add-We are flying to Hawaii for a couple days to “break” up the trip-that will help a couple of retired folks like us- also, we opted for Premium Economy seating- for us it is worth it for the comfort. If you can afford the splurge- do it.
Coming from Australia, almost all flights are long haul flights 😅 Getting up and having a stretch is a must, as is drinking plenty of water. Great tips there! You've given us a few ideas we hadn't thought of 😀
Yeah, my legs start feeling weird a few hours into flying so I'm one of those people that gets up every 1-3 hours to walk around and do some quick exercises and stretches at the back of the plane, or near the emergency exits where there's lots of space. Also, I always always ALWAYS pay extra to choose an aisle seat. This means I can get up frequently without disturbing others and since I get up so frequently my seatmates use this opportunity to go to the bathroom themselves.
Chris A definitely! As a pharmacist, I cannot preach this enough. Especially if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you take medicines that already have anti-platelet/blood thinning properties. :)
My tip for long haul flights is taking Magnesium, really helps with restless leg syndrome. Bringing a reusable water bottle is a must to fill up after security. Many flight attendance will fill up your water bottle mid flight which is nice. for sleep, I follow a regiment of a glass of red wine followed by a benadryl.
I wish I could do the red wine followed by benadryl. But little ones makes that impossible! So it's red wine followed by water followed by red wine followed by water....rinse and repeat until the kids fall asleep or you land, whichever comes first.
I lose all shame on flights! I always wear a sheet mask at some point, and it helps me feel more refreshed when I land. I also always bring a lysol wipe or two to wipe down the surfaces around me!
Lizzy Skleton I am leaving soon and with the Coronavirus all over I was thinking the same thing and wipe down and spray my Lysol all over lol. Plus mask and gloves hopefully it works
I recently went on a long flight and was amazed at how restless people were; standing, walking around. I'm used to long road trips; 9-10 hours, so the plane trip was no problem. I found out; I prefer overnight flights because the other passengers are quieter and more settled down. With the lights lowered; it's peaceful.
I think you could be right there! I have done countless road trips, with kids 10-12hrs so find a 14hr flight not too much of a problem. Night flights can be better if one can sleep and totally agree its quieter. Recently did one and got zero sleep. Night flights can be cheaper too.
I prefer overnight flights. You save money on hotels. Instead of arriving way after check-in and having to pay for just a few hours, you can arrive, go thru customs and hopefully get to hotel/Airbnb right at check-in. Giving you more time to get settled in your surroundings
They may not be "restless" so much as "following medical advice" you know. Doctors recommend getting up and moving at least every few hours on flights because the longer a person is sitting, the greater their risk of developing life-threatening blood clots.
I am one of those people. I’ve never-ever been able to sleep on flights. The longest ones were to Australia, Japan and So. Africa. Plus, I already have varicose veins and don’t want to risk blood clots.
Not to be that person, but be careful when crowding galleys and doors in-flight. The galley is the only space the cabin crew have available to them and there's also a limited number of oxygen masks in those areas, which would cause a problem in a rapid decompression (which is why it's discouraged to linger for too long or too many people at once). So, definitely get up, have a walk and stretch, chat to your crew a bit, and if starts getting crowded head back to your seat :) My top tip: If you want to sleep on an aircraft make sure your seatbelt is done up over your outer layer/blanket and visible. That way you won't get woken up if they need to do seat belt checks during the flight.
Hanging things on the seat in front of you, especially at the top is just an invitation for issues with the person in front of you. Not a good suggestion.
True, i hate when person behind me throws jacket over the seat or anything...oh, and those who sit with their knees on a seat in front of them and shove them in my back, gotta love that crap. But I guess there are people in this world who cares just for themselfs and not the others around them.
@@appletree4433 usually smaller people shove knees . Believe me it is no fun beeing small and go on a long flight. Legs not touching the ground, head rest is usually to high, and so on...
The best way to survive long haul trips is to save up for business class, well worth the extra money and you probably get access to the airline lounges.
I fly long haul frequently, longest 14 hrs. In addition to most suggestions stated in the vlog, I starve myself of listening to music for three weeks prior to flight. I would purchase digital music for my mp3 player but not listen to it until boarding the flight. I would also purchase music that promotes relaxation, meditation and to promote sleep separately from my usual active style of music. During the flight, it becomes so stimulating and relaxing. I play chess, and electronic card games using my cellphone. I would also dress comfortably to promote sleep.
Noise cancelling headphones totally changed flying for me. Despite having travelled the world a few times, at some point I developed a fear of turbulence. The headphones really help this as I can zone out and not become caught up in sounds going on in the plane around me.
I fly over 200,000 miles per year. On long haul with connections, many airports have shower rooms for under $10. Having a shower, shave and a change of clothes makes the second flight and final arrival much more comfortable.
Really Cool Introvert you’re welcome! Get on seatguru to help you determine the seat numbers for the type of aircraft and airplane you’ll be flying. That’ll help a lot. Safe travels!
I use a roll of self adhesive Velcro hook and eyes to stick phone to back of chair. Easy to remove also at end of flight. So many uses for a small roll.
Yes to the water 💧 I had an ‘experience’ on a journey from San Diego to Dublin. Lack of sleep and dehydration and I almost passed out on the plane. The flight crew was asking if there was a doctor on the plane (mortifying) Turns out I was just severely dehydrated. I will never fly again without enough water.
@@juliebuys2195 I don’t think there is a formula but I would start by hydrating the day before. On the plane just make sure you have access to water. The body is usually pretty good at telling you what it needs. I was on a shorter flight yesterday and bought a $4 bottle of water to bring with me incase I needed it. Don’t be afraid to ask a flight attendant for more, you just may want to be in an aisle seat for frequent bathroom visits 😂
Drinking is really important during long haul flights so I always bring a water bottle. I fill it up after passing security and before boarding the aircraft because you can sometimes wait a long time to get a glass of water, especially when flying economy. You don't have to keep your tray open like you do when you have a glass of water, and it also prevents spillage. I also like to bring a leak-proof thermos mug for hot drinks. During the flight, you can go to the kitchen part and fill both of these up whenever you like.
To each his own, but I personally would not recommend coffee before a long haul flight. Not only will it dehydrate you (and cabin air is dry enough as it is) but it will also make you have to use the toilet more which sucks when you’re squished in with tons of other people on the plane. Not to mention the caffeine will keep you up when really all you want is to sleep.
My record is Toronto to Beijing. It was 15 hours 45 minutes. Endless, and then the extremely rude immigration and security in Beijing. I've avoided China completely since then.
Oh dear. I must admit I'm not looking forward to US immigration next month. Last time I was in US was 2000 so very different now! travelling from southern Aus to Boston so stopping in San Francisco as its only a touch over 14hr direct, then a 5.5hr flight after a rest. Took my son 29hrs non stop back in April, due to delays, missed connections and re routing. that was a bit toooooo long for me or for anyone!
Are you ok? It’s not what I said at all. It’s okay. I won’t be rude back to you. I suspect you can’t handle it. Have a good day Matt and try not to see negative where there is none. Xx
Before long haul flights always try to book an airport lounge and take a small food container with you and fill it up with the food from the lounge 👍🏻 plus taking a travel flask and fill it up with another hot drink for the flight
I love my Bose noise cancelling headphones. They bring you such peace on those long haul flights! You are so right, it's worth taking them even if they do take up space in your hand luggage.
Bring Clorox wipes to wipe everything down including the seat back pocket (I personally don't use it) bc studies have shown that the seatback pocket is filthy.
Great tips! For the foot rest, I discovered that you can do the same with a scarf! Did that in our long haul from Hong Kong to Amsterdam (12ish hours). Worked great. I would add lysol wipes to wipe everything down. For teeth, I would use wisps instead or wait for the airport bathroom to brush teeth, but I totally get why you do it! Looking forward to your European videos! Let us know if you make it to Amsterdam 😊
The air in planes at altitude is very dry leading to dehydration. I would always recommend taking an empty water bottle in your carry on, a lot of airports have free water fountains so can fill up past security! If you forgot to take one then buy water in the shops airside, cheaper than onboard bottles of water!
Well my first tip if you’re flying international long haul is spend the extra money and fly with a foreign carrier. They’re almost always better than the big 3 US carriers and have better catering. Second know the type of aircraft you’re flying on and try to book good seats that have better legroom. There’s sites like seatguru that’ll help you figure out the carriers seat configuration. Third, if you have a layover before your final destination, try to have a shower if you have enough time. Many international airports outside of the US have showers that either free or paid. Yeah you might pay but it’s definitely better than feeling all yucky. Fourth, bring a second set of clothes that you can change into during the flight, something comfortable that will help you feel at ease. Fifth, hydrate, hydrate! With that said, safe travels oh and bring some sort anti microbial wipes to clean your seats. Those tray tables are NASTY! Happy travels!
Some tips that work well for me: Put your luggage in a locker on the other side of the aisle instead of overhead. This way you can keep an eye on your stuff. Plan your flight so you’ll arrive by the end of the day. Nothing worse than arriving in the early morning after a long flight and having to fight sleep for a whole day. Try to ajust your biologicial clock as soon as possible. Put your watch at local destination time before departure and try to sleep/eat accordingly. Keep well hydrated. Dont drink to much alcohol during the flight. Use noice canceling headphone. I prefer listening to podcasts over staring at my phone/ipad all the time. Less tiring for your eyes Being 2.00m tall I always book an aisle seat / emergency exit.
No one s gonna steal your stuff while you re on a plane with them😂 just put it right above you..it s not nice for other passenger to change their luggage position
Ellie B depends where you re flying😂 sorry but you dont put your PURSE( with money, cards, wallet, passport etc) near any luggage. It s your duty to keep it near you all the time. And jackets as well.
One thing I would add for those who aren’t used to long-haul flights: it’s definitely worth it to pay extra to select seats. No stress about being stuck in a middle seat, in the middle section of the plane 😩 As for myself, I never really get bored: I’ve got podcasts, a book, the airline’s entertainment system, a nintendo switch and noise-cancelling headphones.
The aisle seat is the best for a long haul fight, a window seat with a 5 to 10 minute view on take off and landing is nothing compared to the ability to get up late at night over the middle of the Pacific to go to the toilet without having to scramble over sleeping strangers.
disagree, as a "special meal" eater who usually gets stuck with the vegan option, the only benefit is getting it earlier than the normal meals - they are not fresher or better in any way unless you just want steamed vegetables
Eric looks like a French count with the beard! 👌😂 Tip to fight jet lag on landing - eat the 1st meal as per the clock, so if you land in the morning go in for breakfast. This helps to some degree in countering jet lag and also acclimatising the body clock to the new location...
These are great tips, thanks! I also like to bring a tangelo or something fresh with vitamin C to open about 30 minutes before landing. When break the citrus’s skin all the bright oils help wake me up. :)
Renee Grable Gotta be careful taking fresh produce on flights tho, it can be a big no no on international flights or flying into a state like California.
Overnight flight for long haul was way better than a daytime long haul by far. So many people kept their shades up during the day when some of us wanted a couple hours of rest.
I used to have a blow up foot stool, I switched to the foot hammock and I love it!!! And you have convinced me, about the noise cancelling headphones! France!!! Yay, my wife doesn't want to go, I am working on her!
Good to know! I did a 10hr overnight flight recently and had my bag under the seat in front as a footrest. Wasn't high enough. I've purchased one for a long haul next month. Don't purchase Sony noise cancelling as I did duty free flying from Fiji back to Aus in Oct. They're cheaper for a reason. I could still hear plane noise, though fainter than normal headphones but still had that constant sound.
One more for you... to clear that dry air nasal stuffed up thing: Olbas inhaler nasal stick. Two sniffs and the world is clear and clean again. One of my must haves. Great tips Adventures!
Great timing guys! My hubby and I are flying from Toronto, Ontario Canada to Sydney, Australia in 3 weeks. Good to have a reminder of the tips I already follow and a few new ones. Thanks! Enjoy your trip!
I've recently found my go-to survival, albeit some may find it inconvenient lol. I'm a person who has really bad motion sickness so watching movies or reading in flight is a big no no. so here's a couple tips for my motion sickness people/those who hate economy: 1. I pack my own (favourite) pillow + separate pillow case for hygienic purposes. I fold the pillow in half with a tie and it becomes pretty compact! So i get a pretty comfortable sleep! 2. Since i packed my own pillow, i use the pillow the airline provides as a seat cushion to prevent my tailbone from hurting. 3. Pack anti motion sickness meds! And take it 30 minutes before the flight as well as follow up when it's time to take the next dose! I will never survive without this one. 4. Even before you book your ticket, take a look at the flight seat map. My go to seat is the two seater one (right after the 3 seater one) and pick the aisle seat. Because you're in front fmof the 3 seater, you get an extra legroom space!! 5. Brings me to my next tip, pick an aisle seat! That way you don't have to worry about bothering people to go to the bathroom. 6. As someone who is usually restless and can't sleep in long haul flights, taking a sleeping pill was lifesaving! If you don't have a prescription for a sleeping pill, trynover the counter melatonin. 7. Pack a water bottle and top it off with water before your flight (if the airline is ok with it) that way you habe water reservoir and don't need to wait long for a flight attendant to come. 8. Download relaxing instrumental music to help you calm down even more! I'm the type of person who finds music relaxing, so this is important for me.
I feel sorry for the person who uses the airline pillow after you sit on it for 10 hours. They change the covers on them but still I would be a little grossed out.
You know...I'm about to take a 13-hour flight from London to Manila and this video will actually help me. This will be my first long-haul flight. The longest I've flown thus far was like 7 hours.
We always take eye drops, about half way through the flight or when feeling tired these help so much! I once had a broken screen on a trans-Atlantic flight but the crew came and gave me a fully loaded ipad so always worth asking ! (Virgin Atlantic rock!!)
Eye drops, nasal spray and a moistened cotton bandana covering nose & mouth (no dignity at all). Maybe with a drop of eucalyptus essential oil. Keeps my inhaled air hydrated. Chapstick, moisturiser and loads of water.
I think if you're using it gently, while you sleep, it's unlikely to bother anyone. If you're using it to exercise... yah, I can see that being annoying.
Scrolled down a bit and didn’t see compression socks on here. They really help! I was just on a 15 hour flight and didn’t get a chance to put them on before my flight and I had swollen ankles for a week during my trip. I wore them on my flight back home and was slightly swollen the day I got home but was fine the next day!
I believe that there is a big difference between eastbound and westbound flights. Eastbound that leaves in the morning is flying into the darkness, so you eat a meal on the plane at around lunchtime. This is your dinner and it’s soon gets dark outside. Even though your body is still awake, you have to resist the temptation to watch movies and give your body a few hours of “lights out” time. Allow the adrenaline of arriving in a new place carry you through the day.
I have a square carry on, I put it under the seat in front of me, but after takeoff, I slide it out and use it as a foot rest. I just don't have anything breakable in there. That's all in my carry-on in the overhead.
I have a similar footrest. It could disturb the person in front of you depending on where you secure it and how much you move your feet around. It felt good though to be able to elevate my legs.
Rae Rae same here. Have used mine in various trips from New Zealand to Europe and Asia , never had any complaints from the person in front of my seat. Like you said , he/she did not even realize I have a leg cradle .
My tip for surviving this type of flights is put on blue gloves and wipe everything down with antibacterial wipes before touching anything. The last flight I was on the teen across the aisle slept thru the entire flight, ate nothing, and got sick right before touch down. I feel sorry for who ever was going to be in that seat next.
Brunei PRS nope your wrong our school has an exchange program for students taking French and a flight from Brisbane to Zürich Switzerland is around 20 Hours. It’s longer if you’re going from Sydney.
I travel a lot and go to Asia quite often. Hong Kong is 16 hours for me. Its a long flight but you sleep a little, meals, movies, lots of water don’t drink caffeine or liquor. You’ll get through it. Bring your own ear buds, it works on planes and if you have noise cancelling headphones if you travel a lot. I also have a travel pillow, that’s essential along with a small travel pack containing face cream, lotion, spritzer for my face, lip balm and always bring a pen. I tried several foot rests I had the same one in the video but it didn’t work well for me. I stuff a small carry on roller bag and I pull it out a little and use that for my foot rest. And yes, the eye mask is a good thing. Amazon has some really good phone and pad holders for the back of the airplane seat that clips on the folding tray. I always have a battery power supply for my electronics. One tip if you get hot on planes, buy a usb portable fan and use the battery supply, it lasts the entire flight and that way you don’t have to mess with the air vent on the plane. Always have a pack of hand wipes and clean the tray and any other hard surface you will touch in your seat. These all harbor lots of germs.
A thumb rule for longhaul flights, is to just sleep on flights going east to help your body with the shorter day, and when flying west stay awake, because your body just think the day is longer (similar to how you feel when the clock goes forward in the spring). Plus try to fast during long haul flights and only drink water and juices.
When I travel, I find it’s the perfect time to disengage from my phone and media. I never watch movies on flights. It’s more relaxing than the beach! Just doing nothing but enjoying the flight! I can’t force sleep and comfort. If I sleep, fine. If I don’t, fine too.
This might sound goofy, but I'd suggest buying a $10 USB air fan (to plug either into a battery pack or the IFE usb port) for those particular aircraft that have removed the personal air vents. Sounds silly but it works
I wish I had known about this before my most recent long haul. It was so hot on my flight I had to use my zip lock bag from my liquids as an ice pack. I ended up getting sick on the flight.
My 6 year old son loved watching your video! We have a long haul flight coming and we are watching this together! he asked me to write his suggestion. His suggestion is “neck pillows help too!”
An antibacterial gel or spray for your nostrils. I fly almost every week for business, and I used to catch a cold or ear nose throat infection every second or third flight. Also anti-bacterial wipes as others have mentioned. And also, really important, give plenty of time to get to the airport on time. There is nothing fun about running for or missing the flight.
Great tips guys! We need that flap thingy 🤣Here's one more... We always take on disinfectant wipes to wipe down the table tray, tv screen and head rest. No one wants a plane cold 🤒- Trevor
My longest flight has been a couple of hours, so I usually just listen to an audio book or watch a Netflix movie. I'm considering going to New York in the near future, and I think that's about an 8-9 hour flight from Gatwick. Your travel tips are very useful, especially the noise cancelling headphones. I've been on many flights with screaming children :/
Greetings from Dali, China!!! I will take all the long haul advice I can get ... usually our trips to or from China door to door are about 40ish hours .... we have to get creative!!!
I had the Flight Flap but returned on Amazon. I wouldn't want to alter the seat for the person in front of me. I never would have bought it if I realized it would enter someone's personal space. I just book flights that have the TVs or hold my Ipad in my lap. I agree with you guys though on it hurting your neck on the tray.
I’ve tried everything to be comfortable. The best I can do is take my backpack, full, stick it on the tray table and sleep on top of it with a blanket over me after I have taken some unisom an hour before. If I can I cross my legs on the seat depends on who’s next to me.
- Carry on foot rest - Eye mask - Noise cancelling headphones/ earbuds - Flight flap - Download Netflix movies / podcasts - Bring a charged powerbank - Bring toothbrush and toothpaste in carry on - Bring face wipes, moisturiser, lip balm (air becomes dry) - Bring a blanket (doubles as a towel, wrap, pillow) - Move every few hours, walk around, stretch
Here are my tips: 1) A larger silk or cotton scarf in case you are sitting next to a cougher or sneezer 1) Saline nasal spray to keep the germies out of your schnoz 3) A small inhaler bottle with comforting essential oils (like lavender, tea tree, chamomille) to keep you feeling relaxed and chill.
on my most recent trip, my special meal (gluten free) wasn't on the flight so I had no provided food for my 9 hour trip ( shared flight air NZ and Singapore airlines, top tip, contact both airlines so there's no way they can mess up!) If it weren't for the fact I bring some gluten free snacks everywhere I go I would have been starving, so I highly recommend bringing snacks with you on the flight
My tip is: stay away from salads before your long haul flight, and always take some of your favorite tea bags, so you can ask just for hot water! It’s really good for gases,(who doesn’t have it?)also, will never travel without lip balm, my lips got so dry and painful on my last trip, and licking just gets worse! Will definitely take headphones this time!👍
I didn't know what to watch on UA-cam so, I asked spirit and said, " what should I watch right now. Saw this in 2 seconds. Then I felt a pull to watch this, then I affirned it out loud, then I felt a shocking to my crown chakra. So much more happened. I cried bc I've always wanting to travel even when young. It felt so good to cry about this. This is part of my spiritual journey w my twin flame. 😭🙂💗
i must repeat one of your tips, Bring a blanket, i traveled in may and didnt think layering would be necessary, but in the sky its -80s and i chose teh window seat, so layer up.
I'm getting ready for a 9h flight NYC - Belgrade (Serbia), and I remembered your video, watching it again 😀 Looove long flights as long as there is orange juice and music 😀 I'm also the person that can't sleep on a plane
I usually fly Air France or Delta to France - the food is quite good, the cabins are not cold, the blankets work, the service is excellent, they are not very noisy. My tip would be to find a different airline. And remind your self that you are on a transport not a cruise.
During our last loooooong flight we had a size-able layover so we rented a hotel room. We were able to have a nice dinner, get a little rest and most importantly .... shower and put on comfortable clothes before the 12 hour flight. I was so thankful! It is going to sound weird but I like to wear scrub bottoms (medical scrubs) on a flight because they are cotton, comfortable and as close as you can get to wearing jammies but still look presentable. I stick with black because I can make any top (long sleeve and sweater) work with it.
I always have a mid size bag that I carry in- it fits under the seat, but I use it to put my feet on. I’ve tried those little hammock things- horrible. Did NOT work!
On the battery pack, check for your particular connections. The newer USB-C connections can speed up charging if you have the correct battery pack and cable. Great tips!!
Cool and very useful tips. We've just talked about traveling to Japan after the Olympics next year and everything will be so helpful. I found that Contoured 3 D masks work well for rem sleep. It's the kind that doesn't touch the eyes. That footrest is just the thing to have. Thanks for the info.

He gave u guys a ride to the airport, overheard on the way home, thank goodness their gone!😆
Best is probably not to respond at all. The will always be someone to misinterpret what you say
If you're relaxed when you finally make it to your seat the entire travel day will be easier.
reading this makes me zen 👌
Thank you! Favorite comment I’ve seen!
Best advice yet. Too bad it wasn't mentioned.
Awesome tips 🙌
I wore compression socks on our flight from San Francisco nonstop to Portugal, and they honestly seemed to help👍
I always use compression socks on flights over 2 hours. I don’t know how compression helps with circulation, but they work!
My long haul flight tips (from a fearful flier!!)
-I have a game called Asphault 8, it's a racing game. Great for turbulence. When you need to focus on the road/driving, you tend to bounce with the turbulence instead of against it. This game has saved me so many times. no I don't work for them lol
-Get up and move around a lot. Go to the bathroom, book aisle seats (screw the view on a long haul!) walk around. Stretch, it's way better than sitting the whole time
-Make sure you DONT WATCH your fave show for weeks in advance. Save it for the flight! Omg you just pissed away 3 hours watching it? Good, the closer you are now to your destination!
-Good headphones, with an app like "rain" or "ocean noises" or whatever you're used to. I'm from Canada, so I like the one that is like rain on a tent. Whatever it takes to at least try and get you relaxed if you want to try sleeping on a plane (I cant)
- Don't watch the monitor with the plane icon creeping towards the destination. nope. Maybe if you're within a couple hours you can watch it but otherwise it's just depressing
-Keep a bag with all the goodies you need, and pack it before you get on the plane. No, not before you leave home. Before you get on the plane. Put your headphones, snacks, water, gum, etc in it so you can easily access it and you're not one of those ####holes rummaging around in the overhead bins every two seconds.
-Say hello to your seat mate, even if just for a second You're sitting together for the duration, so be polite (from a Canadian )
- Think about your enjoyable holiday overseas, and how MOST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WILL NEVER GET TO EXPERIENCE THIS LUXURY (of being packed in like sardines with leg cramps and turbulence, but still. I digress. It's a luxury.)
-
Thank you for the tip :) traveling from Europe to the US this summer. Hope everything goes well 🙏❤️
You're hilarious! I'm also Canadian :) the sardine thing is the worst!
Hahaha, “it’s depressing” 😆 that made laugh! I’ve never thought about it that way before but it’s so true!
very good tips! thanks for sharing my friend
This was way more helpful than the actual video thank you very much!
For really long flight, a pair of light compression socks are handy.
Kathe Mayer How do they help? Preparing for my first long haul flight.
Gilbert Flores it can help prevent blood clots, but also reduce swelling snd discomfort :)
I always bring a large scarf. It is not only useful as a scarf, but as a blanket or pillow. Don't waste precious luggage space bringing an actual blanket.
Why would you bring a blanket? Airlines provide them, do they not?
@@conciergecourtyard4590 The ones they provide (especially in economy) are not warm.
I always wipe everything down as soon as I get to my seat ,seatbelt ,tray table ,tv controls and so on .Who knows what germs have been left behind .
Neurotic?
Lmaoo the relevancy 😂😭
I really hate that I’ve read this comment....
Coming from Australia, almost all flights are long haul flights 😅
Getting up and having a stretch is a must, as is drinking plenty of water.
Great tips there! You've given us a few ideas we hadn't thought of 😀
yes basically every major intl city is 7-20 hours away
Yeah, my legs start feeling weird a few hours into flying so I'm one of those people that gets up every 1-3 hours to walk around and do some quick exercises and stretches at the back of the plane, or near the emergency exits where there's lots of space. Also, I always always ALWAYS pay extra to choose an aisle seat. This means I can get up frequently without disturbing others and since I get up so frequently my seatmates use this opportunity to go to the bathroom themselves.
AliceRoared you are every flight attendants nightmare
Secret Explorer lol what?? Didn’t realise that doing a few laps around the plane and using extra space to do stretches makes their jobs harder 😂
Me too!
The biggest key is to stay hydrated. 100%. That is how you survive. Great tips!
Low dose aspirin (100mg) a few days before, during and after the flight to prevent blood clotting from lack of circulation
check with your doctor before doing that, aspiring can be contraindicated for many conditions
Chris A definitely! As a pharmacist, I cannot preach this enough. Especially if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you take medicines that already have anti-platelet/blood thinning properties. :)
Aspirin is great. Turmeric also has the blood thinning too.
Magnesium is typically a salt and can cause other issues... talk to your doctor before using
It's a regimen. Regiments are military-related
Magnesium yes love it
Careful with magnesium....too much causes diarrhea
"We're not experts."
How does one become an expert? A PhD in transcontinental aeroergonomics? haha
Perhaps a travel ambassador
I lose all shame on flights! I always wear a sheet mask at some point, and it helps me feel more refreshed when I land. I also always bring a lysol wipe or two to wipe down the surfaces around me!
Yes to the Lysol wipes. I like idea of the sheet mask. I might do that close to landing
Lizzy Skleton sleep mask?
Tiff Prendergast face mask lol she’s brave. 🤣
I would have so much fun sitting next to you!
@@ldystardust thanks for this comment. I was about to post the same. It’s important info to share
So, definitely get up, have a walk and stretch, chat to your crew a bit, and if starts getting crowded head back to your seat :)
My top tip: If you want to sleep on an aircraft make sure your seatbelt is done up over your outer layer/blanket and visible. That way you won't get woken up if they need to do seat belt checks during the flight.
Hanging things on the seat in front of you, especially at the top is just an invitation for issues with the person in front of you. Not a good suggestion.
Geri Shoop agreed!
True, i hate when person behind me throws jacket over the seat or anything...oh, and those who sit with their knees on a seat in front of them and shove them in my back, gotta love that crap. But I guess there are people in this world who cares just for themselfs and not the others around them.
Morkees or maybe we are so cramped that there is no solution. Being tall on a plane isn’t fun
@@appletree4433 usually smaller people shove knees . Believe me it is no fun beeing small and go on a long flight. Legs not touching the ground, head rest is usually to high, and so on...
Especially hanging the weight of your legs from their seat back? You’d have to be pretty unaware to think that would be okay.
Likewise
I fly over 200,000 miles per year. On long haul with connections, many airports have shower rooms for under $10. Having a shower, shave and a change of clothes makes the second flight and final arrival much more comfortable.
Any tips on how you handle turbulent/scary flights?
Really Cool Introvert book a seat by the wings. That’s the most stable part of the airplane.
Tony the Mad Brit 1000% agree! I always bring a second set of clothes and try to shower either through paid services or whenever I have lounge access.
@@juniyananajukyu Thank you! I am assuming that and Xanax should do the trick.
But I heard water on the plane isn't clean and you can't bring on board a bottle of water.
@@MelindaMc you can buy water once you pass security, or bring an empty water bottle and fill it at a water fountain.
How much water should I drink for a 12 hour flight?
@@juliebuys2195 I don’t think there is a formula but I would start by hydrating the day before. On the plane just make sure you have access to water. The body is usually pretty good at telling you what it needs. I was on a shorter flight yesterday and bought a $4 bottle of water to bring with me incase I needed it. Don’t be afraid to ask a flight attendant for more, you just may want to be in an aisle seat for frequent bathroom visits 😂
Thanks I’ll use this tip so i can sleep through the flight
David Giles me too
From someone living in Australia. 11 hours is not a long haul flight haha
totally agree with you
11 hours is a long hour flight. Just because you live hours away from the rest of civilisation it doesn't minimise everyone else's suffering
Are you ok? It’s not what I said at all. It’s okay. I won’t be rude back to you. I suspect you can’t handle it. Have a good day Matt and try not to see negative where there is none. Xx
Matt Merchant you have got to have just made the most ridiculous comment on UA-cam...lol
Some Australian girl has probably recently broke his heart lol
I take melatonin as soon as i am on my seat in the plane especially on red eye flights! Works like a charm!
Melatonin raises your blood pressure
3mg? 5, or 10?
@@beautifulme5522 does it really?
@@nathaliejewels8796 i take 5 👍
Before long haul flights always try to book an airport lounge and take a small food container with you and fill it up with the food from the lounge 👍🏻 plus taking a travel flask and fill it up with another hot drink for the flight
I love my Bose noise cancelling headphones. They bring you such peace on those long haul flights! You are so right, it's worth taking them even if they do take up space in your hand luggage.
Charla B. Had them for 10 years, gift from heaven
Bring Clorox wipes to wipe everything down including the seat back pocket (I personally don't use it) bc studies have shown that the seatback pocket is filthy.
I think for our trip to Ireland we are going to put a slim laptop sleeve into the pocket and put our stuff in that.
I use Lysol one, does't smell as strong and still kills germs
Thanks for the extra tips! Hopefully we can get back to Amsterdam soon 😊
Thanks I’m short and my knee hurt when they hang for long. I will definitely use your idea on my trip to Amsterdam
The air in planes at altitude is very dry leading to dehydration. I would always recommend taking an empty water bottle in your carry on, a lot of airports have free water fountains so can fill up past security! If you forgot to take one then buy water in the shops airside, cheaper than onboard bottles of water!
Movies and work and hydration! I am a FLight Attendant I know!
Yup. That's the key!
Put your watch on the time of the place you are landing, and work with that time during your flight to adjust your body clock
Yes! This is the best advice.
If the airport doesn’t have a shower, the lounges at the airport probably do.
Some tips that work well for me:
Put your luggage in a locker on the other side of the aisle instead of overhead.
Less tiring for your eyes
Being 2.00m tall I always book an aisle seat / emergency exit.
Ron Laan I listen to podcasts too. & use beats not anything else
No one s gonna steal your stuff while you re on a plane with them😂 just put it right above you..it s not nice for other passenger to change their luggage position
@@amddwulszek3021 my friend had her purse and sunglasses stolen and my sister's jacket went "missing" on a flight. It does happen!
Ellie B depends where you re flying😂 sorry but you dont put your PURSE( with money, cards, wallet, passport etc) near any luggage. It s your duty to keep it near you all the time. And jackets as well.
@@amddwulszek3021 you said " no one would steal your stuff while you are on a plane with them" incorrect 😉
One thing I would add for those who aren’t used to long-haul flights: it’s definitely worth it to pay extra to select seats. No stress about being stuck in a middle seat, in the middle section of the plane 😩
As for myself, I never really get bored: I’ve got podcasts, a book, the airline’s entertainment system, a nintendo switch and noise-cancelling headphones.
Dream. Flying standby, we absolutely expect to sit in the middle. It's the trade off for flying for free, though.
Family on Standby unless u prefer the aisle
The aisle seat is the best for a long haul fight, a window seat with a 5 to 10 minute view on take off and landing is nothing compared to the ability to get up late at night over the middle of the Pacific to go to the toilet without having to scramble over sleeping strangers.
I’ve seen some people order vegan food because you often get either better food or food that tastes fresher
disagree, as a "special meal" eater who usually gets stuck with the vegan option, the only benefit is getting it earlier than the normal meals - they are not fresher or better in any way unless you just want steamed vegetables
You described my backpack for long hauls almost item per item. You forgot the neck pillow though, very important!
Eric looks like a French count with the beard! 👌😂
Tip to fight jet lag on landing - eat the 1st meal as per the clock, so if you land in the morning go in for breakfast. This helps to some degree in countering jet lag and also acclimatising the body clock to the new location...
@oldhippy lol
Gotta love body shaming from strangers 👍
Its true - he looks like the actor who played the king on Versailles. I think the actor's name is George Blagden
@@amiesparkle00 you can take them on the flights, you just need to eat it and dispose of the skin BEFORE you disembark the plane..
Elizabeth Read - another is compression socks... don’t even hesitate!
Compression socks help your blood flow on the long flights
I've recently found my go-to survival, albeit some may find it inconvenient lol. I'm a person who has really bad motion sickness so watching movies or reading in flight is a big no no. so here's a couple tips for my motion sickness people/those who hate economy:
Instead of a blanket I bring a light jacket with a hood, but for the same exact reasons. Bonus it helps keeps the ears warm and block out light.
And I always drink Vitamin C tablets on flight days. Don't want that airplane crud.
100% Yes have movies, music, books downloaded on your device.. And be sure to power-up (recharged) before your travel. Great advice, great vid!
LOL. I was born in Argentina. And it’s the same for Australians and Kiwis.
A 11 hour long flight is just a regular flight for us!😄
We always take eye drops, about half way through the flight or when feeling tired these help so much! I once had a broken screen on a trans-Atlantic flight but the crew came and gave me a fully loaded ipad so always worth asking ! (Virgin Atlantic rock!!)
Nice tip! We haven't used eyedrops yet, but we'll have to give that a go 🙌
Yes!!! Eye drops and a nasal spray. Dry nose will welcomes germs!!!!
Eye drops, nasal spray and a moistened cotton bandana covering nose & mouth (no dignity at all). Maybe with a drop of eucalyptus essential oil. Keeps my inhaled air hydrated. Chapstick, moisturiser and loads of water.
No one gets upset with you having a flap on their seat. I would for sure...
I have those Sony Noise Canceling Headphones and they are such a life saver!! Love this video, traveling to Italy next month. Thank you!!❤️🙏🏼
I believe that there is a big difference between eastbound and westbound flights.
I use my GorillaPod to hold my phone for movie watching on fold-down trays. Perfect eye level and you're probably already packing one.
Does the foot rest disturb the passenger in front of you? Seems like you'd be tugging on their seat all the time, no?
I have a similar footrest. It could disturb the person in front of you depending on where you secure it and how much you move your feet around. It felt good though to be able to elevate my legs.
I've used it many times before...seems like the person in the front don't even realize it. I don't fly without my foot rest now.
Rae Rae same here. Have used mine in various trips from New Zealand to Europe and Asia , never had any complaints from the person in front of my seat. Like you said , he/she did not even realize I have a leg cradle .
I have had someone use one behind me...I hated it.
Yep, the cleaning crew will just leave the puke on the seat and floor.
You should ask a few Aussies about long haul flights we do 26 plus hours
liar haha, even the world's longest flight don't go beyond 19 hours.
Diane Wolk flying to Australia in February from America! Can’t wait to visit your country, but not looking forward for 28+ hours total in flying time
Enjoy.. let hope you don’t get an unsettled baby near you.
@@bruneiprs4854 stop layovers...so yes 20+hours. It took me 24 hours from Melbourne to London
These are great tips!
Awesome tips
A thumb rule for longhaul flights, is to just sleep on flights going east to help your body with the shorter day, and when flying west stay awake, because your body just think the day is longer (similar to how you feel when the clock goes forward in the spring). Plus try to fast during long haul flights and only drink water and juices.
....I've never heard it described so eloquently. That east/west thing is genius.
Also, is wine considered juice?
@@FamilyonStandby definitely as long as you don't forget to drink water too.
That's actually pretty brilliant...
There is nothing fun about running for or missing the flight.
rubbing coconut oil inside ones nostrils during the flight is helpful for the dry air.
Simple vaseline is best for me always
I did my first and second long hall flight recently and on the way back i took my shoes off and put fresh socks on. Worked a treat
My tip for Eric and Allison is to... Keep on making these videos! You two have helped me before. Travel on.
Y'all actually have really good, cool and useful tips for travel, I will use some of these when I travel! Thank you both!
They're literally just pushing sponsored products lol
Greetings from Dali, China!!! I will take all the long haul advice I can get ... usually our trips to or from China door to door are about 40ish hours .... we have to get creative!!!
Don’t use the water from the faucet on planes!!
Claire Hernandez eww
they have the sign the water is not for drinking
I had the Flight Flap but returned on Amazon. I wouldn't want to alter the seat for the person in front of me. I never would have bought it if I realized it would enter someone's personal space. I just book flights that have the TVs or hold my Ipad in my lap. I agree with you guys though on it hurting your neck on the tray.
You can use a see through plastic bag and use the tray clamp thing to hold the ipad up! stuff something behind it (like socks) to alter the angle.
I’ve tried everything to be comfortable. The best I can do is take my backpack, full, stick it on the tray table and sleep on top of it with a blanket over me after I have taken some unisom an hour before. If I can I cross my legs on the seat depends on who’s next to me.
- Carry on foot rest
- Eye mask
- Noise cancelling headphones/ earbuds
- Flight flap
- Download Netflix movies / podcasts
- Bring a charged powerbank
- Bring toothbrush and toothpaste in carry on
- Bring face wipes, moisturiser, lip balm (air becomes dry)
- Bring a blanket (doubles as a towel, wrap, pillow)
- Move every few hours, walk around, stretch
When you love travelling a lot, you don't get insane from long flights! You're just excited!
Well said.
Only in Business class tho. You likely have all that miles eligible for upgrade anyway.
So true! A good attitude helps!!
@@constancekang9914 it doesn't matter! I never could see the bad things during my low cost flights! Because simply I was excited to see new places!
@@lauraz2896 it's not necessarily having a good attitude, it's my nature being excited if I get the chance to travel!
You can use inexpensive foam ear plugs . Men can carry a man purse to keep items in. It’s small enough to be accessible and maneuverable.
i must repeat one of your tips, Bring a blanket, i traveled in may and didnt think layering would be necessary, but in the sky its -80s and i chose teh window seat, so layer up.
the hammock thing is not permitted for use on a lot of US carriers...breaks the tray tables and can impede exit in an evacuation
I'm getting ready for a 9h flight NYC - Belgrade (Serbia), and I remembered your video, watching it again 😀
Looove long flights as long as there is orange juice and music 😀
I'm also the person that can't sleep on a plane
i’m going on a flight from london to kenya and i love long flights and i’m so excited
agree on downloading shows/movies. there are times when i can’t find anything i want or haven’t watched. offline downloads are a lifesaver 😀
How I survive long haul flights with my brother?
Me: Sleep and eat
Minutes into it and I love it already. Informative, interesting and funny.
Few airlines have their own kitchen and make amazing chef orchestrated food
I recommend to bring a face mist ! Because of how dry it is, you’re more prone to break out because it’s so dry!
That first item is always my struggle on flights!! I always want my feet propped up higher but have nowhere to place them!
Kayli LaFon my purse 👛
