Hi. I love your videos! My question os regarding the whole NEC 680.40. The whole within 5’ horizontal of the tub. Mainly the part that states “whith in site.” Even though there is no obstruction does your install, being its cornered comply? I ask because in my state the tub dealer says the within site is only multiple dwellings, yet every electrician says with in site is crucial. Thank you.

I'm turning mine on today, concerned about my neutral and grounds being shared at main. See they are here as well. Neutral isn't used on royal spas anyways so shouldn't effect either way? (Isolated neutral at sub panel combined at main)

Because the main breaker was so far away and out of sight it is safer to have a disconnect no further then 20 feet and no closer then 5 feet and in the line of sight so as if there is a problem the Hot Tub can be turned off quickly.GFCI is also required by CODE... Thanks for Watching & SUBSCRIBING
You are absolutely correct! Also it is required and a GFI will keep you from getting shock or killed if your heater shorts out. You got 240 volts going to the heating element in the water. I have been installing hot tubs for over 35 years!
Mr. Scott, I have a couple questions. First, I'm not clear on your statements about sub-panel placement. To summarize, am I correct in saying that the sub-panel must be placed between 5 and 20 feet from the tub, above the TOP edge of the tub, and within line of sight of someone in the tub? The reason I ask is because the installation in your video seems to be both below the tub top, and around the corner from it (out of sight). Further, is there generally a code limitation on the length of the Seal/Liquid Tight flexible conduit that can be used? Is that where the 20ft comes from? Does that mean that the flexible conduit section can only be 20ft long (even if the direct distance between the sub-panel and the tub is less than 20ft)? I have a sub panel in my basement that was added for a run to my garage for an EV charger. Is the external box national 'code'? What if I had a gfci in the sub panel and just ran direct to the tub? This seems like a pretty easy run to do the external box either way with flexible whip, but just curious if the NEC has some code requirement since I see hot tub manuals specify that external box. You would be insane to not have a gfci here!!!
Do not use aluminum wire ever.. in my experience when I've worked on tub tripping the breaker or other problems and the only thing that I found that caused me to look at things closer was the aluminum wire and after changing out the wire to #6 THHN/THWN and the problem went away and never happened again Thanks for Watching & SUBSCRIBING

There is nothing wrong with a second hand hot tub especially with the prices of some new hot tubs.. Do a little checking around before you buy one and buy from someone that will service the product after the sale. I sell more used Hot Tubs in Az then some dealer sell new... Hey Mr Scott, a quick question, My hot tub will be away from the house and any place to mount my sub panel.Can I have the sub panel, that contains the GFCI 50 Amp Breaker mounted to RIGED conduit coming out of the ground through a 4 inch thick concrete slab about 12 inches above the concrete?The Rigid conduit that the sub panel will be mounted to will be in place when I pour the concrete pad for the tub.The hot tub will be 5 foot from the sub panel box. Great Question... Thanks for Asking, EMT/metal is for above ground from the main panel to the Sub Panel. The PVC is for under ground only and is grey in color so to let anyone know that there are wires in side them if they are digging in the area and uncover them. Seal/Liquid Tight is used from the Sub Panel to the Hot Tub. Now when placing the Sub panel. It should never be placed closer then 5 feet to the hot tub and in line of sight and no lower then the edge of the hot tub and should never be further then 20 feet from the hot tub and as alway should be in the line of sight for safety...Hope this Helps Thanks for Watching & SUBSCRIBING.

My hot tub motors pull 46 amps. I have to run 150-200 ft of wire from the panel to the hot tub. Do I need to use 4 gauge wire instead of 6 gauge? Thanks

You need to use THHN or THWN wire #6 When you are dealing with a Hot tub.. When ever Ive had to figure out what was causing a hot tub not to run or trip the breaker and everything with the Hot Tub was in great condition and working as it should... it was the wire every time that caused the problem . Stupid question because I over think these types of situations, but if my hot tub needs 1 dedicated 60 amp and 2 dedicated 40 amp , does that mean I need 3 separate GFCI breakers and 3 separate runs of that 6 AWG wire to an outlet box that will accept 3 inlets for the power and 3 outlets to go back to the tub? I hope this question makes sense.

Bro same goes to emt it rust over time where I am we get alot of rain if anything I use pvc it's in code as long as u use sch 80 I'd rather use sch 80 pvc anyday than emt I wouldn't dare use emt outside I'd use rigid if I don't use pvc

All of the wires need to be connected.(With the breaker off) put the GFCI in the main panel and run all four wires in #6 THHN wire(two hot wires common/neutral and the ground) to a spa disconnect with a 50 Amp breaker and then from the spa disconnect you run the two hot wires and the ground to the spa.Check everything with a volt meter before you connect to the spa. As an electrical guy, I can see where determining wire size is confusing. In the nec, table 310.16 has columns for different temperatures based on the insulation type. Most people do not realize that nec 110.14 is for terminal connections, where you hook your wire on the breaker. This section talks about breakers under 100 amps using the 60 degree C column unless the breaker has a different rating on it. So, if you breaker is not rated higher or has no temperature limits on it, you are in the 60 degree C column where no. 8. Is rated for 40 amps and no. 6 is rated for 55 amps. Be careful out there.
Use #6 on all four wires... Others will tell you different but most of the time when we go do service work the wire was the wrong size and cause the problem or it was wired wrong to begin with. Thanks for Watching & SUBSCRIBING

My Sundance requires only 3 wires 2 hot 1 ground from gfci panel the white is capped but my gfci keeps tripping ?

Most people that electricians start with ground. And you out that lock washer in backwards I believe at the tub.
It looks as though the homeowner should be more concerned about the peeling paint on his house before he gets a spa.
