Imagine growing up with aspirations to join Starfleet. You have to work really hard and get exceptional grades to be accepted into the academy. You graduate with the highest honors and have the good fortune to be posted to the Enterprise - the flagship of starfleet. You are assigned to the bridge as navigator. Then, out of the blue, a super-smart kid who has a senior officer mom and a family connection to the captain knocks you out of your position. There are three bridge shifts and the kid gets the primary one with all the senior officers. I’d say the Enterprise has some justifiably salty navigators.

Gene's opinion was that workplace conflicts and politics would have been resolved and would not exist by the 24th century. While Gene was in control, during the first few seasons, he was insistent that no friction between the crew be shown. Good point about Wesley, the writers seem to have missed that his promotion could engender resentment

    • @matthewserdynski1699

@@seanmcmurphy4744 Well, thats like in sports where if you can shoot a basket, hit a ball, or run fast you can make millions from a natural talent. Wesley still had to go to the academy, but his knowledge has saved that ship a number of times. Any bitterness from the crew would just be jealousy that they aren't as smart as Wesley is naturally.

    • @billverno6170
      @billverno6170 8 днів тому

I have knowledge of the “Roddenberry box” that asserted that conflicts within starfleet no longer existed. No greed, hunger, jealousy, etc. The writers hated this because while it’s a great way to look at our future, it is difficult to write television without conflict. After Gene’s passing, the series started to allow more conflict on the ship. For an example of how some of the passed-over navigators might have felt, I think the last acts of the season six episode ‘Tapestry’ are a good example of.

It's a very good episode, I love seeing Picard's skills at diplomacy. The ending is a little melodramatic for me though. There was nothing stopping Riker from simply physically taking Yuta into custody. She didn't have a weapon that could harm Riker, or anyone but Chorgan, and Riker could've also stunned her until she passed out, so the ending is engineered to be exciting for the audience. Other than that, awesome episode showing humans as peacemakers, which I love.

It's mainly the Federation who use phasers, with Romulans / Klingons using disturptors and others using more exotic weapons like laser whips or phased plasma rifles.
What makes the phaser unique is its adaptibility: it has several stun settings, modes good for cutting, drilling, burning etc, and of course a kill setting. This fits right in with Starfleet; an optionally lethal/non-lethal weapon that is more like an advanced multitool than a space gun.
Disruptors are more like space guns. They have far less out of combat applications than a phaser, and are commonly used by Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians. The Federation has banned at least one type of disruptor for humanitarian reasons.

The fact Picard just sat there as Ryker shot Utah aside (it was an artifact/director slip up from the setup of the phaser fx shot), it makes no sense that once he stunned Utah the first time, she couldn't have easily been tackled away from her target.

I guess he could have brought a small team to arrest her, but she was given a ton of chances and warnings. She was haywire, dangerous and didn't care about her own life the entire episode anyway. She was the kind of psychotic that would likely have taken her own life once her glorious, whole life goal of murder was accomplished. Her mind was long gone and Riker actually just put her out of her misery after trying multiple times and ways to get through to her. Had she been forced into some sort of prison/rehab custody of any kind, she wouldn't have suddenly changed then either.

yes, and with several different settings between "tickle" or "weak taser" (that riker used a few times at first) and "kill" or even "disrupt" (which he used next), shouldn't there have been several more settings eg to "immobilize" or "completely stun" ? why did he go directly from weakest to strongest (we saw him pressing the adjustment buttons several times), except to quickly and permanently "solve" the problem of having someone with such deadly cells survive and having to take care of that problem individually in a lengthy future process, and instead finish this episode and all implications permanently ?

There are only three issues with this episode that would make it so much better:
    1) The Ackamarians on both sides would have warp-capable ships, but limited to Warp 3-5, making it necessary for the Enterprise to assist, as the Gatherers would’ve left decades ago beyond easy reach of Ackamarian patrols.
    2) Make the Sovereign aware of Yuta’s nature as an assassin, and taking advantage of Picard’s assistance to purge the Gatherers, while a cabinet member and assistant to the Sovereign is genuinely interested in peace.
    3) Riker beams Yuta to a detention cell instead of phasering her, and reveals the plot, also arresting the Sovereign. To cash in on Chorgon’s debt to him, Riker encourages him to continue the talks in neutral space, with the surviving cabinet that was unaware of the Sovereign’s deception.

In this episode, Wesley was in the navigation chair. Plotting the course is a perfectly appropriate task for a "child". At 10 - 12 years old, I used to be the navigator on (interstate) family vacation road-trips. I was in charge of watching the map, pointing out which exits were coming up, and all in the 1970s with paper maps during an age long prior to GPS. Wesley does often sit in the helm chair, which actually "drives" the ship, but that too is something comparable to what I did at age 12, driving tractors and other farm equipment, mostly unsupervised by then, cutting, raking, bailing and hauling hay, driving (giant) tractors for neighboring farmers at 14 - 16 years old. Wesley was 15 (ish) when the series began. (Correct me on his age if I am off.)

@@Cam-yu8wy "I didn't see or hear any explanation to why she would be stronger" - at 13:38 she clearly states that her body was altered.
Obviously, whatever gave her long life without aging, also gave her resilience against damage, perhaps fast healing, etc.
After all, she would become the last assassin of a dying clan - it wouldn't be acceptable if she were to be taken out by some random mugger or a disease, no?
"so many obvious ways of resolving the situation without killing Yuta" - so many?
      Like what?
Beaming down Data to restrain her?
They didn't know she is this strong - remember, they only knew of the virus, they didn't know her body was altered, nor how it was altered - and also it's possible even Data wouldn't be able to act fast enough to stop her in time.
Same with teleportation - we are clearly shown that teleportation isn't instantaneous.
It would only take her a fraction of a second to transmit the virus - by the time she got teleported to the Enterprise brig, her victim would be dying.
      What other obvious ways?
Remember that Riker beaming down was a rush job - they didn't have time to properly study the situation and come up with a plan.

@@JustGrowingUp84 The only information we are given is that she's been altered to halt her ageing in some fashion and to carry a virus that kills no one but the intended target, and is in some undetermined way resistant to phasers. I'm saying everything else is speculation for us fans because that much detail isn't important to the writers with hard deadlines, which is perfectly fine and presumably normal for most shows. the whole idea is to force Riker, to kill someone he, and maybe some of the audience, cares about, and providing Yuta some plot armor to make the scene more impactful is one way to go, and personally I think it did that.
I would have liked to see them remove options like the transporter which could have beamed her, Chorgan or for that matter everyone away. Considering the phaser stopped her when firing, he could have kept firing. She could obviously be distracted for a few seconds, it shouldn't have been just Riker...the list goes on. Again, I like the episode, but they didn't set up the scene in a way that made it seem like he had no option...

@@JustGrowingUp84 Riker first used one of the lowest settings twice, then at once went up many steps to one of the highest settings. and while also the intermediate settings might have had not enough power to really stop her, even the weakest already was good enough to "pause" her momentarily and gain enough time to at least try to capture her with physical force (she didn't appear to have extreme strength, and the virus was only dangerous for ONE who would have been able to leave in the meantime) before going to the highest settings. immediately going to the high setting might have been intended "only as a deterrent", but would be inappropriate for a leading officer like Riker.
killing her was only a (imho stupid) plot device to solve in a much too simple way the problem to quickly and permanently finish the episode, and without any need to discuss legal issues, whether and how to punish her, and how to treat a permanent (limited) danger from her being kept prisoner with her deadly abilities. although much less dramatic, it could have been solved (or at least been attempted to solve) in a much more peaceful and non-deadly way. of course, this ending fits the movie law of "villain gets killed in the end" :-(

Yeah, I dont think he did have to kill her, the second stun appeared to be doing cumulative damage, one or two more would have floored her. Im not sure why they wrote it the way they did, they could have just carted her off to prison so its not like itd disrupt the episodic format. If they really needed her to die they should have shown her appear to grow, for whatever reason, more resistant to the phaser not less.

all cultures have phasers or a phaser-like system, most noticeably the Federation (Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, etc), the Ferengi, the Bajorans, the Cardassians (compressors) and the Jem'Hadar (polaron beams).
Klingons and Romulans have disruptors, from which the Federation got technology to develop phaser _rifles_
the difference? the phaser fires a weaker beam that can be adjusted for various roles (as shown in The Enemy, used as a welding beam, or later on in Frame Of Mind settable to "wide beam", or in Brothers, set to repeating pattern)
the disruptor fires a short concentrated blast aimed to pierce materials and energy barriers.
phasers were first developed from laser weaponry and phase cannons back in the 21st century, while at the same time the Romulans had plasma cannons.
mixing plasma weapons with phase cannons, they got disruptors, which they gave to the Klingons during a brief alliance.
after the Borg incident, the Federation started developing pulse phaser weaponry and portable phaser rifles.
they got that by -stea- _studying_ some Romulan designs from captured weapons.
source? TNG technical manual and six months of study in order to better balance a weapons upgrade in Bridge Commander :D

Disruptors are more common than phasers as they are cheaper and easier to build. Phasers are more reliable for stunning people and can easily be tweaked to have different effects. Disruptors aren't as reliable for stunning as they can still kill when set to stun. Thus they are the preferred option by the Federation.

Btw - the point of not having a lot of "killing action" is that it would be just totally absurd and unrealistic. SciFi is sort of fantasy... but the sad thing is that in many shows or movies that seem to take place in our real world... these stories are often much more fantasy then this show.
This is part of why it is liked so much.
These are intelligent people. Selfcritical and learning. Feeling a duty to make the universe a better place and understand the potential to participate in this.
In the end I find it sad that in most shows and movies killing is so much taking place. Do we really need it in all our shows?
Anyway - thanks a lot for your reactions. Still so many episodes to discover and looking foward to many more of your reactions - which are always a huge pleasure 🙂

The great strength of scifi is to abstract our political systems to critique it from a rational viewpoint. However these themes of bloodfueds and tribal violence don't quite translate to star trek. Tribal grudges are very much fueling conflict and war to this day. They may not be cause or reason, but opportunists abuse the existing prejudices. Tho I must say that DS9 delves much deeper into these themes

With great respect to you both, and apologies.
If you notice, AS SOON as Riker arrives, she IMMEDIATELY starts moving closer to Borgha or whatever his name was. I don't think he would've had time to even say the order, let alone Worf to have time to acquire a lock (assuming they released lock of the "delegates," which they shouldn't have) AND actually engage the transporter before she touched him.
Her augmentations made her resistant to phaser stun, which we're shown, as well as the camera looking down last time at the phaser on max, with her and Will then looking at each other knowing he had tried and that the next shot would be the last.
I personally don't think it was poor writing, but it's portrayed in a very quick 90s way so it's all easy to miss.
Just my opinion, take care you two. Be safe out there
