Jen: "Commercial break? What is this thing?!?" It's an interruption of broadcasted programming during which advertisements are shown, but that's not important right now.
If Riker had fired a phaser during beam-out, he would have appeared with the phaser on the transporter pad of the Enterprise. He appeared there in a normal pose, empty handed. O'Brien didn't detect any active weapon during transport, which he has been able to do in the past.
Yup. I liked this episode, but I did have one issue. If Riker had fired his phaser when in transport wouldn’t it still be firing when beaming back to the enterprise? They can detect that.
4:15 Bare in mind Picard has to pass judgement over Riker's extradition and a private conversation at that time might be seen as giving him an advantage - but you can see in Stewart's acting it pained him to have to deny Riker a chance to explain himself to Picard.
I didn't realize it when I was a kid, but this episode is a brilliant dive into how people remember the same events differently. As a kid, I believed Riker's recreation was the truth and the others were lies (or just inaccurate memories). When I first rewatched this episode as an adult, I quickly realized that none of the recreations are completely accurate (including Riker's), but none of them are complete fabrications either. The actual events were probably somewhere in the middle. For instance, Riker never would have done what Apgar's wife remembered him doing, but I bet she was not as forward as Riker remembers, either.
I agree to an extent, but at this point the events were still fresh in everyone's minds. Had the trial been a year or so after the events, I'd be willing to accept that Riker and Manua actually _believed_ that was how things had transpired. As Jen said, this episode was a bit clumsy in its execution (Riker not having beamed back to the Enterprise holding a phaser, for example). For instance, there had clearly been at least _some_ spark of chemistry between Riker and Manua, but I'd lean more towards Riker's interpretation of how far it went. (Manua obviously felt guilty for having had those feelings for Riker, so she downplayed how much she may have subconsciously flirted with him.) We also know for certain that Apgar attacked Riker when he found Riker and Manua together. When Apgar entered the room, he obviously saw _some_ sort of behaviour that triggered him to attack Riker. Maybe Riker had his hand on her arm (something that all three of them interpreted differently). Then when Apgar found them, Manua also blew Riker's actions out of all proportion because of her guilt and her own 'betrayal' of her husband. "Riker was a bad person who made my poor husband suffer while I watched on, appalled."

I liked the ambiguity of what actually happened. We know Riker can be flirty, so did he cross the line with her? Was he just being flirtatious and she overreacted? Was she just being friendly and Riker misinterpreted her intentions? Notice the episode never really answered the question. The truth is somwhere in the middle I imagine 🤔
I imagine the wife's interpretation of events was highly tainted by grief and loss and Riker being the first point of blame, putting her into a state of denial. It forced her to question and re-evaluate everything she thought she knew. Death transformed her husband into a heroic martyr and Riker into the villainous threat, and her memory of events adjusted accordingly to reflect that. She may have initially been attracted to and flirtatious with Riker, but afterwards her mind couldn't allow any thought of betrayal to her husband or attraction to the man that killed him.. couldn't accept that the evil Riker could overpower her righteous husband. By the same token, Riker's natural confidence and charisma could very easily lead him to misinterpret signs of flirtation that perhaps weren't as overt or intended as he imagined, and he'd never even consider that his forward nature might come across as intimidating. His ego could very easily lead him to believe he had much more control over the fight than he did. Riker's interpretation is likely much closer to how things really played out, but certainly not immune to it's own considerable bias.
17:23 - HOLODECK SAFETY - As with the ship's 'replicators', the 'holodeck' can create physical objects from matter. Because 'materialised' objects possess 'mass', it is important that occupants are protected from potential injury. Therefore, 'safety protocols are implemented.
For Riker to converse privately with Picard would be seen as collusion. Riker is a witness as well as the accused. Picard csnnot have a private conversation with Riker at *least* until Riker has given his statements about what happened and committed them to the record. Else there may be accusations Picard is coaching Riker since Picard knows more about the case against Riker than Riker does.
Well the Holodeck reconstructions are based on everyone's depositions, so its safe to say Riker has been deposed and his testimony is on the record from basically the start of the holodeck sequences
"We're raising the stakes in this season." Oh, if at this point you even knew how little the surface had been scratched in that regard. I'm sure in real time you've gotten into season 4 by now, so you should know how high those stakes get raised at the end of this season.

I love the villain. He was a bumbling police sergeant in Columbo. Fabulous actor. Speaking of, I’d love your reaction to Columbo!! Loved this reaction!
I always wondered how you, as a music person, would react to this music in the opening scene. One of the most beautiful pieces on the entire show. Romantic, simple. It was made by Ron Jones. He also worked on Family Guy, American Dad, Fairly Oddparents and Superman 1988
Last episode had a Picard facepalm. This one has a Riker facepalm. I didn't remember them happening in back to back episodes. X) Love your thoughtful analysis of these episodes, Jen! This show always made me think, and it's fun seeing how you get going watching it too. :)
Here’s the problem: truth is in the eye of the beholder. Troi can’t tell if someone’s lying if they believe it to be the truth even if it deviates from fact. Hence, ‘A Matter of Perspective’. It’s actually quite funny that eye-witness testimony is held in such high regard by the courts when numerous scientific studies indicate that a person’s recollections of events are usually spotty at best, given to being colored by their own many varied “perspectives”.
It's definitely an interesting use of Troi. Season 3 definitely started using her well, while paradoxically criticizing her powers. Here it's more a critique of her power than a criticism, but in at least six s3 episodes, her power has been attacked in one way or another. I guess the reason they did this is fairly straightforward. The problem with s1 and 2 Deanna was her powers would often ruin the plot if they really worked so they nerfed her by making her state the blindingly obvious.
That's what put Trump away. The paperwork. Put the feelings aside, be it glee or venom, and just go thru the evidence. Like a CSI episode, or Sherlock Holmes.
Not just in high regard by the courts, but kind of a lot of the history of law. But I suppose humans had been dealing with the burden of how to ascertain truth, particularly in matters of law, long before empiricism. In most of Christianity, proselytization comes in the form of testimony. When they have those mass sermons, they shout "Testify!". Jehovah's Witnesses named their group "witnesses". The sacred book is divided into 2 parts that are literally called "testaments". And the Ten Commandments contain a prohibition against bearing false witness and testimony (although, so does the Law Code of Hammurabi, so it generalizes beyond just Christianity).

I love this episode.. The holodeck let's us see the events through different characters eyes. I thought that was a very cool way to tell the story as a kid.
Jen, as usual, your reactions to both episodes reflected my thoughts (well, nearly) as I would have thought about these two episodes. Great reactions AGAIN! Please don't stop with this STTNG series, I enjoy your take on it, thank you! 😇
Nice reaction! 12:05 Hey, how about Counselor Troi's uniform? Much less restrictive around the collar than the standard duty sciences division uniform you're wearing 😁
3:22 Why is he using his Ready Room, isn't that the sort of business his office is for? I thought the Ready Room was just for rest and relaxation close to the Bridge rather than going to his quarters. They do use the holodeck for work rather than recreation sometimes. In 'Booby Trap' Geordi used it to recreate the Enterprise engines (and their designer) to work out how to escape.
Good reaction ensign murry. When you get to Season 4 you can be promoted to Lieutenant, then Season 5 Lieutenant Commander, Season 6 Commander and then Season 7 Captain haha.
The holodeck is weird but can be great when used smartly, like in this episode. Like Data said, the holodeck cannot create anything dangerous to the ship, but things created there can be used to damage the ship. Like when Moriarty took control of the ship and was able to "shake" it by moving a lever. It's interesting to think about because despite everyone saying nothing on the HD is real, it uses a similar principle to the replicators and the transporters. If you go to a bar or restaurant on the HD, you can eat and drink and it can be made real by replicating the food. But i don't think most people do that, they usually visit just for an experience or a change of scenery, not to eat
Hey, Jen! I think you’d really like The Expanse - it’s a sci-fi TV series that aired from 2015 to 2022 and it’s arguably the best thing in the genre in the last 20 years. The Expanse is written incredibly well - based on the book series of the same name with books’ writers deeply involved in production, the show has epic and consistent plot for the whole six seasons, with great dialogues and some of the most nuanced and fleshed out characters in television. The acting is superb - The Expanse features both acknowledged masters of the craft and young talents really making the characters alive. The cast is great across the board - not just the main cast, but supporting actors too. Production is great - beautiful sets (with surprisingly small amount of green screen), awesome practical effects with subtle CGI on top, exquisite camerawork, clever sound design and brilliant score make the viewing experience a real treat (especially to someone who loves good soundtrack as much as you do). Another feature of The Expanse is its fan community - dedicated and passionate about the show to the point it was fans’ effort that saved the show from being cancelled after season three. We’re always happy to have someone join our ranks, and ready to help you navigate quirky waters of interplanetary politics, spaceship design and orbital mechanics :) I would be delighted to (re)watch the Expanse with you as much as I am delighted by these TNG Sundays - so, The Expanse Wednesdays maybe?... :)
Reminds my of the Kirasawa classic ,,,,, I forget the name, you know the one with different perspectives. Also the All in the Family episode with Ron Glass as the repairman's assistant and the three differing perspectives of his confrontation with Archie
"Rashomon"-Style: Multiple accounts of the same event disagree with each other. Due to the unreliability of human memory, the way that preconceived notions can affect one's interpretation of a situation, and plain old dishonesty, pretty much any attempt to reconstruct a complex event using only eyewitness testimony and circumstantial evidence is likely to suffer from this. This was a holodeck-aided version of the "Rashomon"-Style trope. Riker has one story; the people who think Riker murdered one of their scientists have another; and Deanna Troi tells Captain Picard that both sides are telling the truth, or rather what they believe is the truth. The actual truth does come out, but only because the holodeck recreates the crime scene almost exactly and is left on "crime scene." Also, all versions of the story have common threads that are consistent between them, and those threads also help lead to the truth. Riker is absolved of the murder, however, exactly what happened between Riker and the scientist's wife is left nebulous. The possibilities left open are her seducing him, him trying to rape her, and them mutually throwing themselves at each other. Sure, we know Riker as a ladies' man, but you never know... Or Riker and the wife simply misunderstood each other due to each perceiving the other's body language through their alien cultural viewpoint.
0:37 Data channelling early Will Hunting right here. Hey Picard, how do you like them apples? 🤣 1:07 Pretty sure, right before the explosion, I heard a distant "ding-ding, ding-ding-ding". 😉 8:57 Commander William Weinstein in this crazy broad's scenario.
as someone who has been in an abusive relationship and the victim of a lot of gaslighting, the whole "people remember things differently" and "its a matter perspective" angle to this episode really REALLY rubs me the wrong way. this reeks of the woman just being a delusional narcissist, and troy is just backing her up and helps her gaslight and lie because the woman is psyco enough to believe her own lies. although riker is sorta vindicated in the end, they intentionally leave a lot of it ambiguous. the episode always triggered me a bit. i get that memory is faulty, hence why you need evidence in court and stuff, but that doesnt mean that any random self serving lie is just as valid or that there is no objective reality we can reference. if you have ever had someone lie about something you were there for and try to convince people something else happened, you know how i feel.
*_This episode is a great exploration of witness bias: While trials rely heavily on witness perspective, science has shown that witness experiences are highly unreliable as everyone experiences the same event from different perspectives and taint their interpretation of it with their own personality; not to mention that understanding of traumatic or unexpected events can often be wanting in those situations._*
I personally always felt Riker was hiding something at the beginning. And the diverging perspectives between him and the wife, both remembering it differently. I think they were probably both flirting with each other willingly, the wife made a move on Riker, he let her down gently, but while also letting her know that his interest was still real, and that’s when the doctor walked in and caught them, attacked them, and Riker acted in defense. I think he was sketchy at the beginning because he felt guilty for even hinting that he was interested in a married woman and that the doctor might report to StarFleet on it.
I look forward to watching these episodes every week. I know that its a ways off but I cant wait until you get to voyager that is my favorite series. they are all good you do a great job🙂

Hey Jen! May I say you're looking stunning! Have you recently had your hair done, something looks a little different, although still very nice, of course! The uniform is looking consistent with starfleet regulations, although the badge needs straightening, lol! 😂 I always enjoy the mystery style episodes where someone is accused of having done something, and they have to find evidence to show otherwise. I did also recently watch the other video you posted today, the one with ' Q ' I think I'm very much like Picard when it comes to ' Q ', he's rather annoying, lol! 😂 It does seem that either he or someone on the crew learns something from each interaction they have though. Anyway, a wonderful set of videos Jen, Really enjoyed them. Have a fantastic day, take care! ❤
After credit scene: Ricker and Picard in the ready room Ricker: one thing stricks me odd, each time that generator fired, it caused a lot of damage, you took a big risk allowing it to fire one more time Picard: none sense no. 1, when we figured out the generator was causing these radiation bursts, we immediately turned it off Ricker: wait, so how did that think in the holodeck? Picard: its our holodeck, we can show what ever we want there...
This is one of those times the Enterprise really needs a real lawyer. If the Federation wants to respect a hundred different worlds' legal systems, they need more than the Captain and Data to stay out of jail.

"We're raising the stakes in this season." Oh, if at this point you even knew how little the surface had been scratched in that regard. I'm sure in real time you've gotten into season 4 by now, so you should know how high those stakes get raised at the end of this season.
I was today years old when I realized Dr. Apgar is a young Hector Salamanca.
Thank you! I was trying to figure that out.
ding ding! ding! ding ding! :)
Whoa episode 14 already. Close to the episode we are all waiting for Jen to react to. 👏👏👏👏
The safety protocols on the Holodeck go offline a lot, so I was not surprised the Holodeck was a danger.
I can't wait for 'S3 E15 · Yesterday's Enterprise' It is generally considered a top 5 episode. It is my #1 favorite. Hold on to your butts, let's goooooooo
It’s actually quite funny that eye-witness testimony is held in such high regard by the courts when numerous scientific studies indicate that a person’s recollections of events are usually spotty at best, given to being colored by their own many varied “perspectives”.
you should search Niel Degrasse Tyson on his jury duty. it's a youtube short that perfectly exemplifies why eye witness testimony is so fallible

Jen really should do a reaction to Rashomon. It's a classic film that gets reinterpreted all the time but the original reamins the best.
Couldn't make the premiere, but here for support. Thanks for continuing the TREK!
Apgar is played by Ace Ventura's landlord, also the car bomber who worked for Sosa in Scarface.
And Control in the 80s The Equaliser.
Yes, Satan? 😆
00:23
😂
JEN : OH MY !
Jen and her next Jen Sunday's are the best 🔥💙🔥💙
Ah yes, the episode where the meme originated, which was popular for a good while. At 9:42
6:40 I just realized that Dr. Apgar is the same guy who plays Ace Ventura's landlord. LOL
Nice reaction!
12:05 Hey, how about Counselor Troi's uniform? Much less restrictive around the collar than the standard duty sciences division uniform you're wearing 😁
Riker: "Last chance to look at me, Dr Apgar"
Dr Apgar: *ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding*
I always really enjoyed the mystery element of this episode! Thanks for reacting to it!
Beautiful and entertaining as always. You are the perfect viewing companion, Jen. 🥰🤭😘 xxx
I love these star trek the next "jen" sundays.
Good reaction ensign murry. When you get to Season 4 you can be promoted to Lieutenant, then Season 5 Lieutenant Commander, Season 6 Commander and then Season 7 Captain haha.
The first scene and its music take me back to those TNG Edits from back in the day. I do miss the old UA-cam.
I can't even watch TNG these days without the crazy edits intruding into my brain.
We’re always happy to have someone join our ranks, and ready to help you navigate quirky waters of interplanetary politics, spaceship design and orbital mechanics :)
I would be delighted to (re)watch the Expanse with you as much as I am delighted by these TNG Sundays - so, The Expanse Wednesdays maybe?... :)
Luv Next Jen Sundays! Thanks Jen ❤
And then Riker was suddenly transferred to the Neutral Zone to run the undercover Orion Vice Syndicate
I knew that was Tio Salamanca (Mark Margolis) as Dr. Apgar. Dang, my facial recognition skills are sharp!
Reminds my of the Kirasawa classic ,,,,, I forget the name, you know the one with different perspectives. Also the All in the Family episode with Ron Glass as the repairman's assistant and the three differing perspectives of his confrontation with Archie
I like this episode cause it gives a chance for Frakes to flex his acting muscles.
I wonder if the crew ever referred to the hollodeck as the hollow-death trap? Thanks Jen great work!
Troi's emotioanal reads probably are not admissible as evidence. All she would have to do is lie when it suited her
"Rashomon"-Style: Multiple accounts of the same event disagree with each other.
03:31
that statement explains the
random radiation
later in this episode
This episode is definitely inspired by the film "Rashomon" which explores varying perspectives of a murder.
0:37 Data channelling early Will Hunting right here. Hey Picard, how do you like them apples? 🤣
1:07 Pretty sure, right before the explosion, I heard a distant "ding-ding, ding-ding-ding". 😉
8:57 Commander William Weinstein in this crazy broad's scenario.
The scientist is also Hector Salamanca from “Breaking Bad”/“Better Call Saul” 🛎️
Sometimes when you fail at Wave converters, you turn to meth distribution.
Can never go wrong with a good mystery and a good episode of next Jen! 🖖
Two more great reactions from you. Yes i'm one of the many who love Yesterday's Enterprise, so i look forward to your reaction next week.
Cant wait for your reaction to the next episode jen. Keep up the good work, I'm glad your enjoying tng so far. 🙂👍
Not only a great episode, but I read once that they use for teaching law students at the University of Miami. Imagine that.
here we go! best one coming up next!
Jen "I need a ready room...."😊
as someone who has been in an abusive relationship and the victim of a lot of gaslighting, the whole "people remember things differently" and "its a matter perspective" angle to this episode really REALLY rubs me the wrong way. this reeks of the woman just being a delusional narcissist, and troy is just backing her up and helps her gaslight and lie because the woman is psyco enough to believe her own lies. although riker is sorta vindicated in the end, they intentionally leave a lot of it ambiguous. the episode always triggered me a bit.
i get that memory is faulty, hence why you need evidence in court and stuff, but that doesnt mean that any random self serving lie is just as valid or that there is no objective reality we can reference. if you have ever had someone lie about something you were there for and try to convince people something else happened, you know how i feel.
Dennis Quaid movie VANTAGE POINT.
Ah yes, the mandatory Rashomon episode.
Any series that lasts long enough makes one of these, eventually. 😅
And Data's perspective of Picard'a painting was a forshadowing of the title of the episode. ❤🤍💙
Remind Picard Data is a robot without emotions. Frankly, to truly understand art, emotions are required.
Greetings Admiral Murray! 😊 forgot about this episode. ❤Love your reaction as always. Hope you have had a good weekend. 🖖🙂 Live long and prosper
"Rashomen" in space. If you haven't seen it, it's a landmark Japanese film.
"He does come up a bit short in other areas"...ouch
Is that Tio Salamanca?!?! Weird to see him from so long ago. It took a while to realize, since he has so much ish on his face but I'm pretty sure that's him! Wild 😅
We all need a ready room.
I need a “.NOT READY‼️”Room!! ⁉️⛔️. 👁️
You are going to bawl your eyes out when you watch the offspring, but not before you have a lot of anger at Maddox.
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too :)
Hey Jen!
May I say you're looking stunning!
Have you recently had your hair done, something looks a little different, although still very nice, of course!
The uniform is looking consistent with starfleet regulations, although the badge needs straightening, lol! 😂
I always enjoy the mystery style episodes where someone is accused of having done something, and they have to find evidence to show otherwise.
I did also recently watch the other video you posted today, the one with ' Q '
I think I'm very much like Picard when it comes to ' Q ', he's rather annoying, lol! 😂
It does seem that either he or someone on the crew learns something from each interaction they have though.
Anyway, a wonderful set of videos Jen, Really enjoyed them.
Have a fantastic day, take care! ❤
After credit scene:
Ricker and Picard in the ready room
Ricker: one thing stricks me odd, each time that generator fired, it caused a lot of damage, you took a big risk allowing it to fire one more time
Picard: none sense no. 1, when we figured out the generator was causing these radiation bursts, we immediately turned it off
Ricker: wait, so how did that think in the holodeck?
Picard: its our holodeck, we can show what ever we want there...
This is one of those times the Enterprise really needs a real lawyer. If the Federation wants to respect a hundred different worlds' legal systems, they need more than the Captain and Data to stay out of jail.
