I just went there to watch
your reviews of the last
SEASON 2 episodes
and it's blurred
Data does try romance in a future episode. I won't spoil the particulars, but it's an interesting story.
However, he won't achieve true emotions until the movies, when he finally installs an Emotion Chip into his posatronic brain. Then he has to learn how to control his emotions.
Hi Jen! So there have been changes to season 3 as you can tell. New uniforms (no jumpsuit with the colored stripes on the shoulders). They increased the budget as you can tell a bit. Also, new cinematography the original, Edward R Brown, retired, and was replaced with Marvin Rush. They got better film stock, so it doesn’t look as grainy. And the lighting is a little brighter and a bit softer. And you’re noticing a change in style. Stories are moving towards more character based, instead of plot, oriented episodes. And of course, a new title sequence! This is gonna be great!
When the Sheliac are calling back and Picard lets it ring while inspecting the ship's badge cracks me up every time. 😆🤣😂
That be my favorite Star Trek moment that wasn't created by Robot Chicken.
The whole scene is just awesome. I particularly love how Picard completely drops his (entirely justified) smugness when the Sheliak agree to give him the time and thanks them with total sincerity. He doesn't taunt them or gloat or even try to say "see how it feels?" He just assumes his points were made and moves on.
The idea that the Enterprise would accumulate dust is funny as well
I believe the delay was improvised by Patrick Stewart, and the smile on Jonathan Frakes face while looking at him was genuine.
@@josephD32 That would make it even better. :D
Jen: Ten Forward, the coolest bar in the universe!
Quark: And I took that personally.
Well, Quark’s a Ferengi; they take everything personally.
NO Spoilers lol.
I mean I don't know if she'll watch DS9 but just to be safe
There's Milliway's, the restaurant at the end of the universe.
@theinvestigativemillennial9381 it's hardly a spoiler
And the Cantina. Where Han shot Guido.
WESLEY: It's just a science project.
GUINAN: You know, a doctor friend once said the same thing to me. Frankenstein was his name.
WESLEY: (Rolls eyes) Guinan, that was just a novel.
GUINAN: Was it?
@@LoneCloudHopper
GUINAN: Wes, do you think you're gonna get a good grade?
WESLEY: I always get an A.
[leaves]
GUINAN: So did Dr. Frankenstein.
Diana Muldaur left after season two for her own reasons. That left the door open for Stewart and others to convince McFadden to come back. Since the producer that she butted heads with also left, she said yes.
I remember reading about the issues on TNG in Starlog and Star Trek-Communicator magazines, the Communicator mag I bought every issue that came out.
Maurice Hurley
@@benn454 Yeap, that's the guy folks had issues with, what an &&&hole.
@@user-be7tc2bd6e Please tell us more. What seemed to be the trouble?
The producers seem to have quite a history of ....
Let's say "treating female cast members in a manner that many of them were unhappy about".
@@benn454 I ask you to spill the tea, also.
What did this Maurice Hurley do that drove away three female cast members before he also left?
"I like the new uniforms!"
TNG has one of the best costume evolutions in ST. You can tell the actors were complaining until we got to these two piece fits.
I recall at the time that some of the actors were beginning to feel the effects of the one-piece suits physically (bad backs, etc) and this helped force a costume change. It did however introduce its own characteristic feature. Each time an actor (particularly Pickard) stood up, they had to pull down the top to cover the midriff gap. Look close and you will see the quick jerk downward after rising.
@@pasteye1671 The fabric was also not breathable and everyone was a sweaty mess beneath 🥵 The shift in their comfort is palpable.
@@pasteye1671 i actually like picard adjusting his uniform

@@stefanforrer2573 The real Picard Manuever
Glad we’re into season 3. This is where the show really started to find its legs and it just got better going forward
Until the last season anyway. But very strong finale.
@@desmondd1984 Until the movies. But very...oh, never mind.
and it only took 50 episodes to make it here. 😄 while people are still complaining about the first 6 episodes of DIscovery...
Season 1 was confused, sort of throw everything at the wall and see what works. Season 2 went through growing pains. There was conflict between the actors, writers, creators, production company, and others. By season 3 they had a better idea of what they wanted from the show.
Nah, season 7 has some really good episodes besides the finale. Not a strong season over all, but it’s not all bad. They were only contracted for 6 seasons and did one more which made have led to a little wearing down of the shows quality. But some episodes like I said a really good, nice moments of character exploration.
Picard hanging up on the Sheliac and making them wait is one of the iconic and most favorite scenes of the series. You just watched Star Trek history in the making.
Ahhh, the Picard manoeuvre - slightly and sharply pulling the uniform shirt downwards.
S3: New showrunners, new uniforms, new writing team and in the first ep, Bob Kelso from Scrubs!
At this point Gene was a producer in name only and had no oversight on anything.

The officers puzzled looks when Picard dusted off the plaque wasn't acted. Steward improvised that bit on the spot.
In the next series to air, DS9, the child character has a recurring friend character and I think its the underlying reason why Jake never faced the hate that Wesley did. (that is to say, it was much easier for the writers to include Jake in episodes without making him seem like some annoying super kid)
In my opinion the issue with Wesley isn't that he is smart or a good kid or anything like that but that he seems to get this preferential treatment no matter what he does.
@@thomasriddle7005right, he's literally sitting on the bridge with zero training or education because his mommy and the captain are crushing. I can't imagine how hated he is on the ship. The number of more tenured and deserving cadets that despise him may rival the number of fans who just hate his "Mary sue" character

It's good to be in the "good costumes" section of the show's run LOL. And Picard leaving the Sheliac to simmer when they call back is such an alpha move. Among my favorite Picard moments.
I think that if Jen was scooped up and transported to the 24th century, she'd fit right in effortlessly. I've never seen anybody take to a show so quickly and organically. I hope Jen gets to go to a Star Trek convention soon. That would be fun to see. \\//
The Ensigns of Command. The episode where PIcard beat the Sheliak over the with the rulebook after they tried to take him out with it. Stewart improv'd that inspection of the dedication plaque and it was glorious.
I like that you dig the intro song so much. It's iconic.
The civilian scientist in the first episode, is known for his character on the comedy scrubs, he was also briefly in the og movie Stephen kings the stand.
And in the 4th Jack Ryan film "The Sum of All Fears".
And Gerard Kirkhill in The Abyss.
He was an amazing character on Scrubs, did an amazing job like most of the cast there.
SCRUBS! That's where I remember him from! Thanks.
@Jen Murray FYI: Lwaxana Troi is not only all the computer voices in the series and movies, she's also Nurse Chapel from the original series.
The new uniforms are more relaxed, and Picard has a much more even demeanor starting with this season.
From this season on, the crew starts to really exude their excellence.
Fun Fact the thing he inspects for dust is called a haul plate. It contaings the ship's name and lead builders along with the names of her first commanders. To be a haul plate owner means you either built the ship or crewed her at her launching. If you can zoom it you see the names of the creator and producers of the show. Fleet Admiral Gene Roddenberry is in that bronze.
Thanks! That is sooo awesome! I wonder who got that prop after the series closed?
Got me a fine replica of that plate. Yes! At a convention.
In Star Trek it's called a dedication plaque, although it's clearly meant to be the same thing.
One of the benefits of the HD Remasters, many of the computer consoles and terminals and other set dressings have these fun Easter eggs that we originally missed on the lower quality versions we watched when they originally aired. (Raises fists over never having receivied HD remasters for DS9)
Hull plate.
Props to Jenn for wearing a different color uniform each season 😍

Data the love machine! 😏😏😂
There is a saying that explains Data Perfectly.
“A child born to parents that love each other. We have nothing but goodness in their heart.”
Def no spoilers but I'm surprised how many things you've brought up that will be explored. This is one of the goats of television shows.
Hell yeah, more early drop star trek episodes? Yes please.
😂😂😂"You enjoyed that?!". "You're Damned Right!"😅😅
Over 20 years I've wondered, did Wesley create the Borg?
Love how you noticed the juxtaposition in the second episode of Data having to handle an emotional crowd while Picard is doing his best dealing with an overly logical/inflexible being, especially since Data could have handled it so easily, doubt he'd have needed more than 5 minutes to work through and find a solution in the treaty, hah.

Oh, right, Shades of Gray. I never rewatched that episode; I often forget it exists. Lol. I don't really mind clip episodes of shows that have run 5+ years to get a little reminder of the shows "best of" moments, but to do one after only 2 seasons is just goofy; not enough time has passed. I was so excited to have Dr. Crusher back in Evolution as a kid! :) And I've always loved The Ensigns of Command, though to this day I do not understand the title. Lol. I really appreciated your insightful commentary on that episode, Jen! Excellent analysis! :)
At 2:20 - No, they never explain what happened to Pulaski but behind the scenes Diana Muldaur wasnt well liked by the main cast, the only reason that Gates McFadden was fired in Season 2 was because a writer didn't like her, Gates often thanks the fans for bringing her back to the show
Never did like Pulaski,js.
Having a new character join the cast and immediately pick on a fan favourite wasn't a great move. Although there was clear character development through the season and she warmed up, the damage was already done. I'm sure if she'd had another season she'd have fully integrated.
@@pkelly6618 she wasn't bad, it's just that she didn't click with the cast and crew of the show. Others have joined shows and instantly fit in, others don't. Pulaski wasn't a fan favorite but she was fine on the show, it's just that Gates was much more popular.
The big issue she had in season one was about changing her hair too often, while one person she bumped heads with left they still added a contract clause about her hair, limiting changes. If you check season one styles and cuts changed between shots so often she must had spent more time in Mott's chair than in sickbay.
Gates mc fadden was choreographer on labyrinth
If memory serves, the actor playing and voicing the Sheliak was also the tar monster from Season 1.

Finally Season 3. Now we are talking, this is when TNG got better and better. I can't wait for the cliffhanger at the end of season 3!
I was once at a party with the actor who plays Gosheven, but it had been so long since I'd seen the episode I had no idea who he was. I think I said 'hi' in passing though. Weeks later someone who had attended the party told me he'd been in a TNG episode and told me his name so I looked him up and lo and behold! This was in South Carolina, where he is from.
He is probably grateful you didn't say anything, since he was not happy about the way they overdubbed his lines
@@ammaleslie509 I'm sure you're right. I read more about that episode and apparently he denied himself a tv credit for that episode, so he is uncredited even though he played a big part.
Is 4 episodes a week going to be a permanent thing now? I'm all for it if it is.
Dr Crusher is back!
Gates returns by fan demand and looks great 😍
Ships doctor is always one of the best characters (Pulaski no exception despite her short time) and Beverley Crusher is one of my all time sawbones. They may not get to develop much but they are always a source of humanity and a voice of concern.
Beverly - crushing it!
The Ensigns of Command is one of my absolute favorite episodes. Glad to see you enjoyed it.
Those chess moves the computer was spouting were a nice call back to the OG trek.
"They really do have him doing all the same work as an adult."
Boy, if that isn't Wil Wheaton's story in a nutshell..
I’m so glad Crusher is back. I just didn’t ever care for The other Doc. And you’re right about season 1 & 2. As you’re going to see, the show does improve considerably, but I would never suggest skipping them. There’s just too many building blocks for later on.
Ep 2 was a good one. The best part is the Cap getting a little petty at the end. They had it coming. A Data/Picard episode is always good.
Loving these extra ST drops Jen!
There's a lot of TNG to get through, and more movies, and more shows and oh no I've gone cross-eyed! 🤓
Seeing Jen fist pump to the TNG opening theme is everything. 🎉😂
I absolute love it that your Star Trek Reactions are now twice a week!❤❤❤❤❤
Hey Jen, i think you deserve a rank promotion with each season on your uniform.
Wesley is more disciplined than most 17 yr olds, and it is not harming him. Let nature and fate guide us. We're not all the same.
My favorite scene of episode 2 didn't make the cut. It's when a frustrated Picard checks in on Geordi and O'Brien's progress and asks them how it's going, Geordi replies with "about like you'd expect", and Picard just turns around and walks out exclaiming, "Splendid! Splendid!" I just find that little scene so damn funny! 😂
One of my favourites actually came at the end of the episode, when Geordi reports that they can use the transporter, only it will take a large team a long time to achieve it! I've always loved how Geordi seemed to activate his own brand of "malicious compliance" in order to successfully follow Picard's orders on the matter! 😊
@@TheNighthawke502 "It'll take 15 years and a research team of a 100 ..." That line is pure gold.
@@TheNighthawke502 Indeed! 😁 That whole subplot is gold. It's a playful self aware jab at the shows trope of the chief engineer pulling a miracle out of his hat.
Data is the #1 character in the entire Star Trek franchise. We have only scratched the surface.
Season 3 is my favourite - sooooo many great episodes
Liking the video is a good way to know what videos you've watched... and a great opportunity to support your favorite UA-cam creators at no extra cost to you. Hit that like.
Yes absolutely!
Geordi and O'Brian as a team for transporters are the same quality team as Spock and Scotty in TOS. (That's my perception).
the last system wide malfunction was Scotty tampering with Exelsior in Search for Spock
1:08 I've been watching this show since I was like 8 in 1994 and I never realized the opening theme changed so often the first couple seasons until your reactions! And I would always dance and hum the opening theme each time lol.
I'm loving all the TNG reactions Jen. Thanks so much. Season 3 is pretty much where everything comes together for the show and I just know you're going to love it.❤
Who's that? That's Bob Kelso, Chief of Medicine for Sacred Heart Hospital!
If you want to know what it is like to have a relationship with Data, just ask Tasha Yar. Season 3 is where tnG really took off. Some of the best episodes of the series are Season 3 ones.
The voice of the Shelliac (however you spell it) is the same as the black tar thing that killed Tasha in season one.
Shelliak*
And since we never knew what race created Armus (black tar thing), maybe it was the Shelliak? 😀
@@TheRealThunder Maybe
I'd say Dr. Catherine Pulaski was transfered, and allow me to quote Tyrion Lanister from Game of Thrones when he said: "Death is so finite, while life,...life is full of possibilities." If Pulaski is out there somewhere else, she might come back. I'm not saying she will, just, she could.
That question about the love between a human and a robot can be explored further in the film "Bicentenial Man" starring Robin Williams and I highly recommend Short Circuit,
Do you like to read Books? Then I would recommend Patrick Stewarts Autobiography to you. He called it "Making it so"❤. I am reading it now and I love it.
Also there is a fictive Autbiography about Jean Luc Picard by David Goodman I red. Especially we learn more about Picards 20 years on the Stargazer there. First as helmsman later as Captain.
Don't worry, most of us hate season 2 last episode.
Ensigns of command offers one of the most badass Picard negociation scenes ever.
Great reaction :)
I'll just say Data felt more than he even realized at the time for Tashs Yar - he mentions their intimacy in Measure of a Man so there is that. As with the core crew Data's emotional evolution is slow and ongoing - you'll appreciate each step. :)
I think Data knows he is "creative," it's just that he lacks emotions. He definitely can invent new things and find new solutions that did not exist before him, and I don't think there is any dispute about that, per se. And music is definitely an area where creativity is a good things to have
The writing noticeably improved as soon as they got new collars on their uniforms!!
32:22 literally every straight man who ever gave a woman flowers can attest.
So excited you are on season 3! From here on out, some of the BEST Star Trek ever done is on the way!
You never fail to impress me with your attention to details (yes, the theme for S3 is a new Arrangement) and your intuitiveness with the characters and stories. If I knew you in real life, you would be a top-tier friend. Keep going boldly!
Season 3!! I'm so excited, I can't wait for more!!! 👏👏👋👋
When you mess with Picard like the Sheliak do, you end up with Picard totally owning you.
Picard's calm demolition of the Sheliac is legendary. Where Kirk would start shooting, Picard will absolutely destroy you with diplomacy.
I’m so happy we get Trek twice a week!
I've always spoke the intro with Picard and hummed along with the theme myself. -Gear out! ✨Communicator chimes✨
The role of Leslie Crusher is played by Jen Murray. "Lt. Crusher, report to the bridge!"
Speeching the Sheliak cements the legacy of Captain Picard speeching his way out of problems.
(Akin to Kirk speeching machines to death.)
They were contractually obliged to create an extra episode for season 2 but there was a writer's strike so they couldn't get anyone to write a script. So, yes, creatively, season 2's finale is The Neutral Zone, Shades of Grey is only the contractual finale.
I 100% agree with you that Data does have emotions, they're just not human emotions, they're Data emotions.
Data episodes are the best. He's got a heart of gold, even if he never sees it in himself.
loving the uptick in Trek releases. Always a welcomed surprise. TNG had the burden of establishing 'Trek' as we still know it today. I love watching it come together.
Can Data fall in love? No spoilers. The "Naked Now" has already shown Data showing off his more human programming with Tasha.
And he kept a portrait of her, which we see he has in measure of a man.
man, it's so fun watching you watch this series for the first time. I wish you released a video every day.
Great reaction I hope you having as much fun as we are. It’s so fun to see your react how you enjoy it least you appear to enjoy it. Thanks for the fun until next time. I can’t wait to see more. It’s like the old day when I first came out. Had to wait a week till the next episode. I couldn’t stand it then I can barely stand it now it’s OK that’s all for now.
You make watching these programs more interesting than the actual program itself.
I was a teenager when these originally aired, I had such a crush on Crusher. (Away because she was actually pregnant)
Thank you for another great watchalong, Jen. ☺️ Fun to see Dr Kelso from Scrubs. 🙂
I'm so glad Jen is watching this whole series. With some exceptions, this show just kept getting better. And to truly appreciate the experience, the whole show SHOULD be watched.
Hello Jen!😊 Pulaski was unpopular with Star Trek fans. Both the fans and Patrick Stewart wanted Crusher (Gates McFadden) back. The showrunner that fired her was gone by the beginning of season 3, so there was no reason for her to be off the show. Rick Berman took over as showrunner beginning this season, so you should see a difference in the episodes.😉
Love your reactions especially to Star Trek TNG. If you are interested in the precursor for data it is the 1974 TV movie "The Questor Tapes". A Gene Roddenberry creation that unfortunately was not picked up as a series. The main character, Questor, is an android like Data.
I like both these episodes. The series is really ramping up now.
Congratulations, you are now ahead of The Target Audience in shows!!
Not so fun trivia: The Ensigns of Command. The actor who plays Gosheven, Grainger Hines, claimed the studio didn't like his voice, so his lines were dubbed in by another actor and by way of protest, he asked that his name be pulled from the credits. That's why his mouth movements and speech are off so much.
I heard the former uniforms didn't transpire much so they were so sweaty wearing them. So, these new episodes are not just an improve in style, but also in physical confort for the cast of the show.
They weren't just sweaty, they were also way too tight, and that tightness didn't do any favors for Johnathan Frakes and his bad back.
@@corvus1970 Thanks for completing the issues of that uniform, I frankly forgot about the additional problems for Johnathan Frakes. Those suits were quite a nuisance.
