Jesus of Nazareth - Sanhedrin Debate

  • This is an apocryphal scene from the 1977 TV miniseries "Jesus of Nazareth."
One line has stuck in my head for decades and I finally bothered to track it down. It's an off-screen remark when Nicodemus suggests that the Lord Jesus could very well be the promised Messiah of Israel... "A carpenter? From Galilee!?"
We suffer from this disease today in the modern church. We submit will and intellect to "experts" and "scholars" and "catechisms" and "councils" and "church fathers" and "pastors," etc. Men with "letters." Men with titles. May it not be said of the true workman.
"Study to shew yourself approved unto God [alone], a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." -2 Tim 2:15
In Acts chapter 4, Peter and John were accused of having no education as well, but they had something better, the holy spirit and knowledge of the Lord.
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: 9 If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were UNEDUCATED and UNTRAINED men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
    -Acts 4:8-13
James Mason as Joseph of Arimathea
    Laurence Olivier as Nicodemus
    Anthony Quinn as Caiaphas

Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Matthew 11:4-5 All I know is I was blind and now I see.

Anthony Quinn even surpassed the great Sir Lawrence Oliver in this scene. Not bad for a Mexican, who played an Indian in his first movie and couldn't speak English?

I think often Laurence Olivier overacted, playing to the back balconies as if he were still onstage. But this is one of his finest performances, much more subtle and introspective; especially his delivery of the Suffering Servant. On an unrelated note, in his autobiography Ian Holm said a lot of the actors were frustrated with Anthony Quinn because of how slow and deliberate his delivery was, whilst they were all wanting to hurry up and go home!

I think Zeffirelli had everyone overact in the entire series. The music builds and the acting was all very over-the-top. That said, since it was consistent, it does attain the effect he wanted. Every line comes off as important and with a punch. In that scene with Mason, Olivier, and Quinn, you're get a combination of powerfully delivered lines. The heavy natural reverb adds to it all as well.

@@MichaelScotto It was all built around Robert Powell. Zeffirelli knew that he was writing history with Powell's portrait of Jesus.
The "heavy classic actors" added was to give the whole production further weight, but in the end it was all up to Jesus..or the guy portraying him rather.
What Powell managed to do was both a blessing and a curse, I presume. But his portrayal of Christ is unmatched to this day.
Mel Gibson tried, but the enigma of Jesus is so much more than suffering.
To millions around the world still today..Robert Powell is the face of Christ. Kinda scary tbh.
I'm also certain it will never be toppled, and will fade into history as the masterpiece it is.
Kinda like The Lord of The Rings Trilogy. What we got in the early 2000s will never be achieved again.

I've read people's answers about how things were back in the Bible days when
These Religious leaders get together and try to sort things out, but the fact is
Why do we debate on something when theses Religious leaders think they have
The Answers, the problem is that Jesus knows what's in your Heart and knows
On what's coming to pass, and Jesus was rejected by the Jewish leaders because
They didn't believe in Jesus, and during the early persecuted Church in Revelations
This is what Jesus said in Chapter 2.....I know you're works tribulation and poverty but
You are rich and I know the blasphemy who say they are Jews and are not but a
Synagogue of Satan do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer indeed
The Devil will throw some of you into prison that you might be tested be faithful unto death
and I will give you a crown of life......

Always good to see people quoting the Bible, George. I'll paste Acts 5 below if you have the fortitude to read what you quoted.
Yes, many claimed. The probability of Jesus saying who he was by examining the evidence is astounding. Christ fulfilled over 300 prophecies documented in the Dead Sea Scrolls written 50-150 years before Christ. By just checking on 8 Jesus is Lord by 1 in 10⁴⁸. [10 with 48 zeros after] Chuck Missler has a video on it for documentation.
      34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

Hundreds like him ???? Is this lucifer who wrote this ? Never in the history of mankind from the beginning until now has there ever been a human flesh and bones to perform the miracles that Jesus christ did. He resurrected the dead who were dead for over 3 - 4 days , gave sight to thousands of blind people, he healed thousands of paralyzed, deaf , sick , leprosy, and women who was battling 24/7 menstrual cycle period for over 10-15 years . Do you want me to continue ? He is the greatest human being to ever walk the face of the earth. Loving , caring , merciful and powerful. Jesus christ is king and he is now sitting at the right hand of God.

The sanhedrine crucified the son of God. Not pilot.
Therefore what came to become is no surprise to those that believe. Those who killed the son of God can expect what was coming.

JESUS who is GOD did not die but the flesh of the man with GOD the spirit in him. So you mis state. JESUS body was buried and then that same body became glorified after the resurrection. All power and glory was with GOD in fulfillment of what was spoken before the incarnation of JESUS in to one Virgin woman named Mary wife of Joseph!

    • @MichaelScotto
      @MichaelScotto  17 днів тому +1

Jesus is God, but he did die. The wages of sin is death, and he paid that price. Then her conquered death and the grave by rising again. "And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.' Having said this, He gave up the spirit." The spirit is the breath of life. Adam "became a living soul" when God breathed spirit into him. And more pointedly, Paul writes in 1 Thess 4:14, "For if we believe that Jesus died and arose again, so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus."
A common mistake in theology is the idea that men are triune beings. We have a body, we are a soul, and we have life (spirit). These are not separate entities. The Lord said he would be in Hades (which is the state of the dead) for three days and three nights. He was not simultaneously in a grave and in heaven. That would mean there are 5 parts of the Godhead. He died, his body was put in a tomb, but who he is was in a state of death in Hades. Paul uses "Hades" only once, and it refers to believers in a state of death (1 Cor 15). Thanks.
