Let me know what you would add to either list or what I missed! Thanks guys & hopefully this helps some out there looking to build up a 392.
I think the whipple 3.0 upped the game for the 392. Bolt on the kit. and make Hellcat power.
As you said, with the correct tuner/tune.
Can some porting help
I would do the MMX 392 forged bottom end swap out kit and then I would send it
Why no mention of upgrading engine internals (aside from cam) for the first half of the video?
I wanna build my SXT to kill hellcats… I don’t have that kinda money lol… I’d probably need an easy 30-40k for that. Twin turbo, supercharged, NOS, cam, LT headers, crank, torque converter, rear end, suspension, wheels/tires, injectors, CAI,true dual exhaust, I’m sure there’s quite a bit more im leaving out lol
426 stroker for the street, keep it naturally aspirated and reliable. Go forced induction for the strip. You will learn the hard way if you don't do it this way. Ya you can do forced induction on the street if you run low boost. But if your going to do that just go NA with a stroker crank and have a engine you can put a 100k and still put down a lot of power.
A stroker is always a great option - that's the route I went. The problem is how much it ends up costing in labor & parts. Turns into a full build - might as well do the camshaft, fueling, ported heads while everything is open. I was trying to keep the 392 from a total rebuild.
talking with mmx, its 4k more for forged internals on a 392 and a whipple with supporting mods than a 426 build. whipple, and forged internals seems like a no brainer when you think about the power differences
Head work and valve train upgrades to handle 7k rpm is a must. With the extra 1000rpm they run right beside hellcats even if they make more power the extra rpm holds the same gear for longer and carries more speed. Example 4th gear shift point is around 85mph at 6000rpm. With the cam and upgrades to spin 7000rpm you can rev out to 105mph before needing to shift. This makes a mountain of difference.
🎯
All spot on upgrades! It doesn’t take much and the fun of modding is what it’s all about.
100% agreed! Nothing like seeing a Shaker 392 ripping past a hellcat. Smiles per gallon
Yes the driving is the reward, the fun is in doing it yourself. Something most people just don't get.
Great information for all of us 392 owners. 👍👍👍
Hopefully it helps some guys out there. Maybe a light road map to get them to where they want to go.
All spot on player! The cool thing about building a 392 to be on par or faster than Hellcat is that you can take your time. Sometimes people get overwhelmed and want to do all the mods at once and be like "Where am I going to get $20K to do all of this!?" Remember to pace yourself (you got time), enjoy the process (successes and failures) because things will break, not all builds are flawless. And make sure you budget accordingly. #MakeThoseMemories
People def need to enjoy the process more. Many are to busy thinking they'll be happy once they hit a certain point. A lot of money will be spent in the process - so try enjoying some of it lol!!!
Its not smart to do if its a daily driver if u have more than 1 car cool
@mucleboy0151 There are always risks with building. But I get where you're coming from. Putting all your eggs in one basket with your daily driver can be scary while building.
@@Mr392Scat its not smart most giys who do it, its not their daily js
Great advice - especially that final comment about the tuner. I know several builds where the engine was blown because of a bogus tune. Love those old school clips bro - such great memories.
I wish we could rewind time!!! I think I would've tried enjoying it more & stop over focusing on videos. 392's are great engines - just need to be careful who you work with. it's developed a bad reputation because of bad tuners & shops.
I definitely appreciate you and your channel man, it’s so much down talk on 392s and you just find the answers were all looking for to beat the odds great video can’t wait to get started building mine up this winter 🙏🏾
Most of those talking down on the 392 are just recycling prior talking points they heard from a friend that has a friend with a 392. A lot of the 392 guys that actually build them know their limitations & how fast they can be. Either way, hope this helps some guys out there in some way. I appreciate the support
Nice video. My 392 Grand Cherokee is currently getting a stage 1 cam, forged pistons and rods, upgraded valvetrains, stainless works long tubes, ati damper, along with afe intake, rear resonator delete, and a greene tune. Best stock run was 12.6@107 and a 4.26 0-60 at -151ft DA. These upgrades will get me to a sub 4 sec 0-60 and a low 12 1/4 mile
I’d do them all to be honest. Anytime you can get some more out of a 392 without blowing up the engine is a plus in my book 💪🏽. I just have to work on the depth of my pockets lol.
hahahaa I hear you on that! The bank account holds us back. The 392 is a great engine & can be modified to haul ass.
Love it! I'd like to go the N/A route. I feel that would be plenty of power for me & be respectable at the strip.
I think it's impressive how you can get an "n/a 392" to mid 10's - many don't realize how fast that is. Best part is you can run it all day long.
Great video R/T 👏👏 Alot of people don't realize the 392 is a little bit bigger NA to start. With just 6-7 psi of boost they'll run with or better a hellcat. Hellcats at sea level are 11 psi. At 2000 ft above sea-level they're 10 psi 😉
Exactly. You can get these 392 hauling ass without completely gutting them & doing a full build. 6-7 lbs of boost will net you a big WHP gain.
You've gotta change the transmission though or get one built. The 8HP70 can't take much more torque over stock.
@@lb9355 Yes true but to get one built or to get the hellcat one built. Besides at the low boost level I think it would survive more than people know. All's fun and games until the boost is raised 😎 then lookout tranny in the near future 😋
Forgot how good my 6.1 car sounded 🙃 wait until her new 6.4 is done.. should be a fun car. Thanks for the love. Oh and btw.. 4 2020 stock hellcats now have seen 570whp on our dyno jet.. we got a low one lol.. so being as my 6.4s not far behind with stock heads and stock headers is pretty impressive.. shows how good the 6.4s can respond to the correct stuff.. they all have their great benefits.. I like NA.. since its fast enough for the street.. but lord I love me a hellcat lol
Your custom cams always sound & perform the part. Keep killing the game buddy.

They sound pretty good. I think that’s the next thing I’m going to do is the cam I just got differential in today. 😁👍
A cam is def a great way to improve overall performance. Adds HP/Torque throughout the RPM's
Excellent video man. I would also add in stripping the seats or replacing them with much lighter ones as well as the extras in the trunk. Save about 200lbs. Can also do carbon fiber from say Anderson composites if you got the coin. These mods will increase everything while leveling the playing field on the street and track. Find the lightest wheels and break kit available along with a carbon fiber drive shaft. Springs track or street will help no spinning on the street in addition. Dif brace for wheel hop. Some times it’s not all about power sometimes it helps to utilize efficiency of what you have first so the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to compete or win as the competition is always lighter. Let’s be real if these motors were in a mustang or a vet it would be end game for them. But no credit is given as the body weighs 2 tons. So do this and all the mods mentioned say good night Chevy ford in the na game track and street unbuilt. One last thing of you are trying to roll race na in these cars intake runner length matter for upper rpm along with porting which will pair nicely with a upper rpm breathing cam. Take a look at the fastest roll racing na Camaros they tend to be hi ram on top of running nitrous or meth injection to cool inlet air like an intercooler shrinking molecules while oxygenating at the same time allowing to run more timing than just 93 but the flexibility of only running 93. Tune is paramount especially if this is done. Meth has its own problems but it’s a route just don’t run dry. Nitrous has its own problems as well but everything has its draw backs it’s just knowing how to get around it. Sorry for the book but I figure those who want info will read and those who don’t will say write books much grandpa. That’s cool 🤣.
Cool information thanks for sharing love these kind of videos
Haven't heard much from Mr. Mack lately.
Where he B?
He's more active on instagram. Def a busy guy with all his builds
If stock 392s are running mid 12s, then my little 5.7 is gonna make some 392s mad, because hopefully i should be running close to a 12.0 with a factory converter and street tire, all N/A
Let me know how it goes. When are you planning on going to the drag strip?
@@RTLife hopefully soon, sense florida gets about 3 days of cool weather a year. Just waiting for a tune, and revisions, and to install the new rear end. Going from the open 3.08, to the 3.70. Might spin though, but its gonna be quick

What did you want to do with your R/T?
@@RTLifewas working with joe at lemon chasers. Plan was a ported and polished 6.1 intake manifold, cam, shorty headers larger throttle body and a procharger. Probably not hellcat fast but definitely fast
Sweet video brother, I was thinking of doing something similar but you beat me to the punch 😂
It's an interesting topic - gets people talking & thinking of upgrades for their ride. Also nice to give people realistic expectations modding their 392
"Or, here's another idea that's going to be very controversial, you could shut the fuck up." Classic 😂
Love your videos bro. Thank you.
I have a 2013 charger srt8 6.4. Plan on getting long tube headers and maybe a hellcat TB. What Mackbuilt cam would you recommend?
I would talk with him about which custom grind camshaft would work best. He has really great results for 392 guys - that & long tubes will really pick up a lot of HP/Torque for you. Def worth the $$$
@R/T Life thanks for the quick response. I will definitely do that. Those are at the top of my list. And a tune of course. I currently have the diablo i3 tuner.
Where is your tuner located or could you recommend someone on the east coast
I use EFI Specialities - he's tuning MackBuilt & Modern Red Hemi as well. Both throw up very respectable times & push the boundries of their build.
Wassup R/T life, got a question for , planning on getting a Durango, me and my wife have four kids and this will be my daily driver but I’m stuck between a r/t or a srt , which one would you recommend
All depends on your budget. Hard to turn down that 392 power right out of the gate. I love the 5.7L & didn't mind modding it so it was a nice fit. If it's your daily I would say the 392 SRT is the better bet, so you don't have any down time adding HP/Torque.
@@RTLife hey thanks for responding, love the channel, long time follow, yea I’ll go with the 392 , and what’s your favorite exhaust setup of those 392
You should check out mid muffler delete (sounds solid on 392). Also borla Atak & magnaflow Xmod are up there - both have aggressive exhaust sounds without any drone or being to raspy.
I dynoed at 755 in colorado altitude with a stage 2 cam long tube headers whipple 3.0 e85 upgraded torque converter fully built on only 8lbs of boost and 1050 cc fuel injectors
I just got 2.5 pulley voltage booster for the fuel pump I'm hoping to be about 860whp but it's been a mission no rebuild on the transmission yet thankfully good so far
Lol the Dave Chappelle clip made me subscribe😂😂😂😂
Great info, awesome video
Thank you! Def appreciate it
If you are adding boost to a 392, you damn well better look into forged pistons and rods. Also, the tranny is only rated at 517wtq. Boost is going to put you way over that.
if you're dropping in forged internals it's going to open a very expensive door. You will want to run more then 6-7 lbs of boost - that will lead to a transmission swap, upgraded fueling w/ all new lines, etc. A tuned hp70 can handle around 650 of torque - after that you will begin to slip. A stock 392 can handle 6-7 lbs of boost no issues if tuned properly.
@@RTLife to build a boosted scat to around 800hp is like 20k at most
I have a 392 bro and this helped
Nice! Glad this was helpful in some light. Hopefully it gives people a good ballpark for expectations & performance figures.
@@RTLife definitely doing headers and a cam next but living in CA makes it hard to do anything to our cars
This is such a loaded question. The responsible and better build platform is obviously the hellcat. We all like to mod cars, the Hellcat is the better platform to mod on, so you buy the Hellcat. That's pretty simple. The aftermarket supports it better, direct connection support is better, so it's literally better in every...single...way.
The only reason you'd buy anything other than a hellcat is because you couldn't afford a hellcat in the first place. And if you couldn't afford the hellcat in the first place, you really shouldn't be sinking a ton of money into a substandard platform.
And I'll leave it at this: I have never, neither on the internet nor in person, seen someone who spent the same total amount of money in their scat pack versus someone who spent that same amount of money on their Hellcat, stomp them/beat them. I have seen them stay close or even. At that point, you have to ask yourself, why go to all of that trouble, to spend the same amount of money, on a platform where you'll continuously have to monitor it, versus just doing the right thing and getting the better platform.
This is really analogous to someone buying a V6 mustang or Camaro versus the V8 upper trim. Do I build the ecoboost or do I get the V8? The answer in those communities is, you get the best possible platform you can afford to build off of. The answer rings true in Hemi world too.
Bro you’re so mad haha! Do you have a hellcat or something 😂. When people show behavior like yours it’s just saying that this guys is proving a point and you can’t handle it lol
Running a blower on a stock 392 is really pushing it. I say just put a Holley hi ram and ported heads.
I think you hit on the head with the words “for those of us who really enjoy the building process”
So Iv just done a complete build on my 2021 scat pack internals lifter springs pistons rods then added a procharger and Holley intake sniper manifold plus Holley fuel pump and 1500 fic injectors my question is what horsepower is to much for the trans and what trans did you go with because I have a feeling I’m ganna need one real soon
Once you pass 650whp & similar in torque that Hp70 is going to struggle. From the sounds of it - you're going to be well past those numbers. I'm installing a built hp90 so I can drive it with a clear mind.

Will a upgraded cam void the warranty
Do a vid on recommended blowers for 6.4
Why does everybody say the six point fours are not a good motor to aspirate everybody says putting forced induction blows them up constantly you see it everywhere
Forged rods, pistons, and aftermarket steel billet main caps with forced induction added to the equation for piece of mind. Don't roll the dice with the weak AF factory internals.
I run 10 some 1/4 with cam and converter e85
I was under the impression you couldn't throw a supercharger or turbo on a 392 do to the way the engine is without spending ridiculous money to rework various part do to the added power?
Just make sure you use the right tuner. Many guys run 6-7lbs of boost without any issues. Anything more you're running a risk & should upgrade those pistons ASAP.
What would you do to increase hp for Durango hellcat?
Has this exact setup been done with someone u know?
You missed one of the BIGGEST issues with the 392 engine. It has cast iron pistons and connecting rods. You need to replace those with forged parts if you want to run any higher than 3 psi / 600 whp or else you are in serious risk of destroying your engine.
With the right tuner you can easily run 6-7 lbs on a 392 reliably. In this I was trying to not do a full rebuild of the 392. Once you open up that door it gets so expensive. If you forge the internals you're not going to run 6-7 lbs - you'll want 10-15 lbs. You'll likely be in the 725+whp range. Then you need to upgrade that hp70, entire fueling system, etc.
@@Mikes05Hemi The pistons in the 5.7 are actually better than the 392. For some reason they tossed cast into the original srt 392 and never changed the design. Most likely a relic from the 6.1
I have a 2016 scat pack. I had supercharger, and headers and high flow cats installed by Petty’s garage. At the track I was running 11.0 @ 124mph. Then the engine blew within 6000 miles. I had them rebuild it along with a custom cam and forged pistons, I had it tuned by someone else after because something seemed off, and the tuner said Petty’s tune wasn’t very good, plus I had issues with the quality of work they did. After that I was running 11.4-11.6@ 130 mph, with a lot off wheel spin, on MT drag radials, 60’ time went from 1.5 to low 2’s. But I was also starting to run out of fuel at the top end. I have upgraded to bigger injectors since but haven’t been to the track yet. Tuner went MIA, so I been having to learn how to adjust the tune for the injectors myself. It’s good cruising, haven’t had a chance to test WOT. Not sure about trying to find another tuner if they won’t stick with you.
@@ramdart74 I'm sorry to hear about that. It's incredible how many shops are just unaware of how weak the 392 pistons are.
It sounds like you're on the right track now. Bigger injectors and possibly a stronger fuel pump setup should help your top end like you said but its sounding like you're encountering a new problem for your 60' now. You're making good power, using good radials, but still slipping so you might be suspension limited now. That's another expensive route to go down so if I were you, I would get a 2nd opinion from a proper drag pro instead of some random guy on the internet, haha. Best of luck!
@@RTLife so if u get forged internals u cant run 7 pounds of boost u have to turn it up ?
Or you can just swap the 392 for a hellcat longblock and much cheaper to do 👍
yah that's always an option. I see some used hellcat engine/transmissions on ebay for $20k in good shape.
@@RTLife if your patient they are even cheaper I've seen some down to 8500 with trans
I bought a Scat brand new, fully loaded, I could afford the Hellcat as this is just 3rd car for fun so to me it’s way more fun to get the scat and add the hellcat longblock and make a killer with all the scat badges.
No forged internals for the forced induction?
640whp after 15k mods. 🥶
It's a big jump in performance - 200+whp gain & cutting 2 seconds off a 1/4 mile.
Can you do this with awd?
Man it would take crazy amounts of money to make a 392 as fast as a hellcat. not to mention to make it reliable because you would also need forged internals etc.
Naw 15k to 20k is not a lot of money to some people, maybe to you it is lol
@@timcox7912 Regardless it's still not cheap. If you gonna spend that kind of money on a scat, you might as well get a hellcat. That sound about right to you bruh? 🤨
Naw I want a new hellcat not a used and that’s closed to 90k, my new scat was 54k brand new so with those mods It will still be cheaper than a hellcat
So what’s the parts\labor costs on those builds cuz I’m starting to wonder if getting the Hellcat would be cheaper
Really depends on where you live & the quality of the shop. I don't talk prices usually because they're so different for everyone
Your right, getting a hellcat is much more cheaper, plus you have a warranty, compared to getting all those mods going to cost you 15k+ to get 640whp
People don't account for down time while modding these cars as well. I haven't had my car in 2 months. When I did my Stroker kit - that was 2 months etc. That said, in this the 640whp 392 is much faster then a Hellcat - don't let the similar HP fool you. But, if you can get afford a Hellcat - get it. You will have a much higher ceiling to add power without having to break everything down & start from scratch.
Also the sticker price is just one part. I've priced out a hellcat & 20k doesn't seem like it would add much to a monthly payment. The sticker may be $20k but then you have taxes & fees rolled into those payments - adds up quick esp. when your insurance goes up.
Hey got a 2015 jeep srt what can I do to get without crazy cost
Supercharging the 6.4 is a bad idea, they can't handle boost. They crack the top piston ringlands unless you open up the ring gaps, and at that point your so deep into the motor you may as well install match weight rod and piston kits. Problem is that to make the 392 compete with a hellcat is more than the added cost of a hellcat for most ppl.
I was telling everybody the same thing when I first got my scat pack and read that it was a bad idea lol calm down these cars can actually handle more than you think, it even shows how much the car can handle on Wikipedia lol
Also it cost about 15k to 20k to increase the performance drastically, brand new hellcat is close to 90k, my new scatpack was 54k, so with the mods I’ll still be cheaper than a hellcat
My RT is a cat killer
For anyone reading this in almost 2025 the price of Hellcats and Scat Packs has come way down since this video was made. You just can't look at places like eBay and Autotrader.
I talk to a guy from comp cam and I was told I can get 60-80 off a cam setup ..whats ur opinion.
It really all depends what other upgrades you have in place & whos tuning it. 60+whp isn't far fetched at all.
Can the stock 6 speed man trans handle those numbers? Maybe just upgrade the clutch?
take a look at b5beast422 - he was throwing down 900+whp with almost a stock 6 speed
it finally gave out but he's making crazy power

I have a 2012 srt 8 FBO Cam & e85 & I’m only making 470whp. I was expecting way higher numbers. I feel like something is holding it back. Could it be the tuner?
How does it do at the drag strip? Sometimes dyno correction factors are different. Which is why some read higher then others. In the end, all that matters is how fast is it.
@@RTLife haven’t been able to get a good run.. whenever she hits 120 mph the check engine and battery light comes on and she stalls high almost like it’s pulling whenever I let off the brake. @srtLEE Did you ever figure out what the problem is? If not, I would try data logging, or if you have an obd scanner, you should be able to see the freeze frame data and show that to tuner or mechanic.
I guess all of this voids your factory warranty 🤔
def kills the warranty. Some dealerships are cool & look the other way though
change rear gear ratio
lmao fuck yours is pretty fast
i'm pretty sure the reason we dont go get a used hellcat is because its like trading in your good looking girlfriend in for a hot stripper. She may be hot but she's been used, abused, run through and ragged on. Not a good decision to buy a used hellcat. And the difference between a paid off 392 and a new hellcat i could buy and modify a big block and have money left over.
Can he cam a v6 tho with custom cam lmao 😂????
OR, you could just bolt on a Hellion Sleeper kit with tune, boosted to 5-6lbs safely on a stock motor and be done... Hellion swears up and down that 5lbs is absolutely safe and will give you that 620-30whp. People are just never happy and always want more when they know it's on the table... Superchargers will always be harder on the motor. Turbos are just added power...
As you know, I'm all for turbos. They're the most efficient but a costly option - labor of install is much higher then a supercharger. That said, a 200whp gain is impressive esp. for such low boost.
@@RTLife You should check into the Hellion kit. It's literally bolt on and comes with new exhaust manifolds. 8K plus another 4 for proper install and dyno tune. Not as expensive as you'd think...
Why screw UP your Scat, just for more power.just go and f****** buy one.
no idea why i'm watching this, i own a gt
Awesome video as always.. However your cammed boosted 392 with stock everything else is no where near as reliable as a stock hell cat.. To get there.. you need to do engine work, trans swap, then other suspension upgrades like half shafts etc.. That is just reality.. It just becomes a fast ticking time bomb and a money pit..
Yah the ceiling isn't as high as a hellcat without completely building out the engine. That said both options if tuned properly can be very reliable. If your goal is just to beat up on Hellcats - these are solid options. Once a hellcat is modded though you'll have to invest a lot of $$$ keeping up with it.
Maybe. Some of us never wanted a Hellcat.
Scat widebodies come with the same half shafts as the Hellcats and Demons. And a FBO e85 Scat only needs a tranny tune as you are not past the HP70’s capabilities. But you are correct, it is a fucking money pit x2. But so are Hellcats with 20K+ dealer markups.
You did not mention anything about gearing. Also, when you talk about tire size, you may want to discuss how smaller diameter tires will essentially give you the equivalent of lower gears.
Do these modern care have to have a cage if they get down to 10.5?
I am going to come down hard on this rolling start crap. I worked as an EMT in S.F. for 4 years, and scraping innocents off the road because some dummy wanted to go fast is not cool. Do you want nightmare fuel? Because that is how you get nightmare fuel. Period. I have two cars, my daily driver which is a '16 Scat Charger. The other is my 68 Barracuda Fastback race car, which does *not* get raced on the street. Yes it will drive on the street, and to work on occasion. It even still has the rear view mirror, wipers and the heater blower motor.
Also also, you may want to discuss putting these heavy HEAVY girls on a diet. I fully expect to get my 68 barracuda fastback down around 2800-2900 lbs. With my tiny, little, antique, naturally aspirated 360LA with a mere 3 speed a727 Torqflite and 4.10 Dana rear end with super stock springs, just put your hellcats back on the trailer, ladies. Fat girls have no place at the track, that's where the svelte girls belong. Obesity requires a rolling start, on the freeway, where idiots can wipe out entire families in a ball of flame and twisted metal.
Whatever. People get wiped out on the freeway everyday from non-racing incidents. I personally don’t street race…ish, however I do drive Hwy 80 between Sac and SF every day and have seen multiple TC’s by people just being dumbass drivers.
Will not be even remotely as reliable or as consistent. Not to mention resale loss. Just buy the hellcat/redeye.
it can be very reliable with the right tuner. It's only running 6-7lbs of boost.
@R/T Life psi is not a metric that matters, cylinder pressure is. Please show me even 1 650whp scat pack that lived over 5k miles being routinely romped on but respected.
Sure, go talk with EastCoastJeepSRT - he was procharged for years (jeep SRT 392) & traded it in for a Trackhawk. Many people do it - we just only hear about the ones that fail. A lot of crappy tuners out there
@R/T Life I've only been in the scene since 2018 and have a redeye charger but personally I've never seen a 6.4 car live under boost without spending more money than they would have had j into a hellcat
@@thewolf61691 They have to at a minimum have forged rods/pistons.
Is there a cam and tune that really just gets u the lope? Ford had the “ hot rod” cams for the 4.6 that don’t really make anymore power but sounded amazing. I’m more just wanting the lope instead of chasing every ounce of hp.
why would anyone want to do all this work and spend money like that to go out and do burn outs. I can take a six cylinder and burn out like they are doing. you're ruining and engine for what, just to play with, where is the since in that.
