Well, in this case it means that the scene was basically unscripted, with the actors having to make up the lines on the spot, relying on their chemistry and knowledge of their characters for it. Which is why I was shocked, because I love that scene and had just found out that it was all thought of on the spot.
In some of the behind the scenes shots it looks more of a magenta color than the deep red it appears to be on screen in the final film. I think it's just a matter of how the camera picks up the color and then how it's color graded in post, presumably the real paint that they're putting on him just has more of a purple hue to it and that's why everyone says he's purple.

My guess is they chose magenta as the filming colour because it's the actual opposite to green, and since they film in front of green screens a lot of the time, using the exact opposite will make it even easier to separate him from the background in post.

his performance in Uncle Frank is relentlessly good, also Every Woman Knows A Secret, also David Copperfield, also Master and Commander, also Beautiful Mind, also many other things, his not JUST good at being purple.
Many of us adore (yeah, that means me😊) the final Vision/Ultron scene in AofU. Paul's portrayal brings a nuanced sense of innocence, hopefulness and an unscathed wisdom to Vision that might be lost in a more stoic delivery. He continues to be a brilliant choice for the role. And Ali, you are just terrific. Thank you for bringing such light to your work. (BTW, there's a brilliant video essay on that very scene here on UA-cam in the One Marvelous Scene collection called I believe, Two Robots Stood in the Woods Reflecting on Existence. Visions character development in the show rivals any in the MCU and were only 5 episodes in as of today Paul Bethany has some serious talent and I’m so glad he’s gotten a main character role in this show he’s been fucking unreal gives me chills

Its purple when its filmed, but its turned to more of a red type colour when it's being edited
