I feel there was a hidden message in there. He said Hans is now playing much better than he was two years ago, implying that the dominant win just now is a strong (albeit not sufficient) reason to suspect foul play back then. A much stronger version of Hans basically lost to Magnus right out the gate and it was nowhere near close while a weaker version dominated Magnus multiple times? I don't know how to describe that except sketchy.
Yes - he said 'miles, miles better than he was playing two years ago'. Which must have partly helped to form his judgment on Niemann's games then. Very interesting observations.

Kasparov had his best year at 36 or 37. His rating was 2851. He retired young though at 42, while still being the best in the world easily. Some guys retire way before 60 though, especially from big tournaments. Magnus is much better than all these guys. He has a while as the best player still.
