What a nice surprise trip down memory lane! My son moved from California to Haiku about 7 years ago and rented a studio apt right up Kokomo. On my first trip to Maui to visit him, I discovered Colleen’s and would go for early coffee . My son would break from work and join me there for a delicious breakfast. Shopped at the market there several times as well. He has since moved to Lahaina, so this is the first time I have been “back” to this center. Brought back great memories, thank you! Now, if you could just find him a condo or house before he is outbid again…
Colleen's has amazing cocktails. Nuka is my favorite lunch spot (sometimes too busy for dinner). Mediterranean Grill has the best gyros on island. The food trucks down the street on the highway are pretty great as well.
A few trips to Maui ago, we ate at the Haiku Food Trucks (shown at about the 6 minute mark) after we went exploring Maui. As a WW2 history buff I had a mission that day, searching for the markers remembering the 4th Marine Regiment and its training on Maui after completing the invasion of Saipan (June 1944) and before going to invade Iwo Jima (Feb. 1945). The markers were hard to find, placed on the slopes of Haleakula where the 4th Marines trained. We found the markers (with the help of a friendly electrical power company lineman) then stumbled upon these food trucks afterward. Just driving around Maui is a wonderful way to see this magnificant island and to find some great local businesses and people. (Eric: How about some vlogs covering historical Maui? WW2 Naval Airfield, Marine Training grounds, planatation life, etc.)
Camp Maui (4th Marines) located near Ha`ikū, Amphibious Training sites from Mā`alaea (or Buzz's) Harbor to Mākena Landing and NAS Pu`unēnē just north of Ma'alaea Bay. sanctuaries.noaa.gov/maritime/expeditions/maui/history.html

SHAKKA to Eric! (Noun. An ancient Hawaiian hand gesture whereby the thumb and pinky fingers are extended whilst the index, middle and ring fingers take the form found in a fist. The hand thus displayed is then shaken or 'shakka-ed' in alternating 180 degree movements. The 'shakka' represents the philosophy of 'hanging loose'). Kokomo - Beach Boys, released 7/18/1988-became No. 1 for about two months. Did you say Macadamia nuts, pineapple, & mango?
Thank you for promoting local businesses
Always. Mahalo Sam! 🤙
