I have the Shure SE215 (a cheaper version of the SE535), and they're fantastic just for listening to music but also have great sound isolation for drumming. The foam eartips make a great seal that blocks out sound from drums, and sound from your environment when just listening to music. If you're not interested in super expensive in-ears or custom ones, they're a great choice.
Just want to share my experience with some Vic Firth studio isolation headphone. They are great. They block out soo much sound and they arent expensive at all. Just about 60 at guitar center. Check those out!
Am I literally the only guy that thinks Vic Firth should make some In ears for drumming?!? I mean seriously, they could do that and make it work that isn't like $1000 and make it like $30
Can you suggest what are the best in ear defenders? I'm a drummer in a band and I need something not too pricey to protect my ears! Keep up the work casey!
Just a quick comment: I believe they distinguish between 'over the ear' and 'on the ear' headphones. What you're discussing here is all over the ear I figure. I got to this video because I'm trying to figure out what truly is the best for rehearsing. I find that I do want a little bit of sound to pass through live, just for my particular set up. So I was thinking open backed headphones. I realize your video is more tightly focused on a smaller range of hardware, just wanted to make that comment. Thanks for your honest and very detailed reviews, I appreciate that
I use Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs "studiophones" because they're loud, sound great, and were very reasonably priced. Years later, the plastic coating on the ear pad things comes off in flakes. It's everywhere. They don't make as good of a seal anymore... but hey. I still own them, I'll still use them. I'll probably also use ear plugs as well as... drums are loud, mmkay.
COOP3RDRUMM3R Just wondering, are you done at GSU now? Also, what happends with the stuff you get from the company you endorse if the endorsment ends (if that makes any sense)?
Im old now. I play guitar but am visually impaired. I used regular old earplugs for a long time but still have that constant ringing. Its important to mention i was a stage electrician when i could see. Lately i am using those fender earplugs that are volume reducing but not muffling but my ears still ring after playing. I have not tried over ear protection. I do prefer over ear headphones for music and it makes it obvious that im ignoring everybody. Im looking at drum phones because i live next to a train crossing and its loud
Great video, would have saved me many hours of research way back when. Though I'd mention that when I was Just starting out and didn't want to spend a ton but liked the in ear monitors I bought the meelectronics pro music monitors from Amazon, clearly inferior quality to your examples but for the price you get memory foam tips that do a great job of isolating and even though it's single driver (I believe) it's still a decent sounding practice option.
What I found out using multiple headphones is that earbuds no matter how good will not be able to achieve the proper frequencies needed for electronic drums, the over ear tend to be overly bassy which in some cases it is not good because they get muddy, the closest headphones that are usable are 40 mm drivers from Sony.
What do you guys think about the custom molded in ear headphones by Decibullz? You think its enough Sound Isolation for drumming? for everybody who doesnt know them its definitely worth it to check them out because they're custom molded ones for about 60 bucks.
Thanks for the vid! DT770s are great, but the con you mentioned about them moving around when you play is really a big minus... That's why I am choosing Audiotechnica's m50x, which are also not so bulky as Beyerdynamics
I have the Beyerdynamic's he mentioned in the video and their sound isolation is PRETTY good, and comfort is incredible!!! I'm still however, looking for even MORE isolation than the Beyer's. Anyone out there know of something quieter than the Beyerdynamic DT-770-M-80?? I know they're way up there in terms of noise reduction, but I'd still like even more DB reduction for use in my home studio. I'm trying to avoid custom moulded IEM's, just because of the price increase... I'd like to try and stay around the $250 range.
Do your Beyer's move around as much as the Pearl's mentioned in this video? I play drums also and am looking for headphones with good isolation, but I don't want them moving around all over my head while playing causing a different distraction for me.
No, they don't at all. They're very comfortable, sound great and don't move! The only things I've had a problem with is, there's a volume control on the cord... I don't want that getting bumped during a show, so I taped it in position with electric tape and it works/looks fine. Also, I bought them because they're supposed to be one of the best sets of headphones available in terms of isolation from outside noise, but to me... they're still not quiet enough inside the ears. I don't know what other options there are for something quieter other than custom molded in-ears, so I guess these are the headphones I'd recommend for most drummers. Hope this helps.
What do you recommend for someone like me who plays w headphones but my family wants to hear the music I'm playing along with? All they hear is my drumming. I get on their nerves since they can't hear the music.....thanks
+Shawn C I would suggest you use an audio splitter. You can use both your headphones and a speaker that is loud enough for your family to hear the music and your drumming at the same time
Great video! Right now im using shure se315 with Comply p series tips with sound muffling earphones works really well for blocking out sound...but im looking into getting 1964s or alien ears!
Hello, I run a home studio, and my drummer always complains about the phones. He´s never satisfied. He wants big loudspeakers next to him in order to hear and "feel" the heavy sound of the band. He finds the earphone´s sound too low and thin. I tested with many different earphones, and I don´t know what to do. I can´t use loudspeakers while recording. It looks like he has a hearing problem. He justifies by saying that he wants to hear and feel people around him. Every earphone I tested, he finds low and thin. I use a Behringer Powerplay Pro XL as the phones amplifier. I even burned one of the earphones trying to achieve the power he finds it´s the optimum. Now, I seek a robust very high power earphone for drummers, in order that he "feels" he´s on stage, what do you suggest ?
If you want a very good pair of headphones just for listening music you should try the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 or the first version of the Momentum (both on over ear version).
I just recently bought a pair of wireless 535’s cause I was able to get 20% off, they do plenty enough to isolate me from my drums when I play and they’re comfortable, but I’m so used to my around the ear Sennheisers that the Shure’s basically feel like they have so little low end and especially sub bass. I can still return and if I don’t grow to love them, I already plan to because like you said, they’re expensive; but do you have a good idea for what in ears to get if the 535’s are pretty good for me except for needing more of a low end soundstage. I was looking at the Westone B50’s because I prefer to be wireless if possible, but I heard those B50s are only Bluetooth 4.0 instead of being updated like the newer Shure BT2 that has Bluetooth 5.0. I checked out the manufacturer of yours, but the Qi is no longer on the site and their cheapest 4 driver is more expensive now, so is it worth it at this point especially compared to the Westone B50s that have 5 drivers each for about the same price? I’d love your input because I don’t have a ton of experience with IEMs and drumming, I’m still barely 18 months into getting my whole kit. I’d love your feedback and the guys at Drumeo as well. I’m signed up on edge under my same name.
The headphones get plugged into your monitor control which ties into the entire system. This allows you to fine tune your listening experience. You are able to individually turn up and down each musician as well as the vocalist.
Very edifying video. One question, do you have any recommendations on headphones that would be used with Roland VDrums to get the best sound out of the electronic kit? I'm currently using Koss UR-30 which work pretty well, my only issue with them is where they sit on my head gets sweaty really fast.
Hey my name is devante and im 12 years of age and i was wondering do still have the zildjian zht cymbals and are u giving some away or selling them cause i want to do alot with my drum career but i don't have any cymbals and my friends are starting a band do u think u could help
I have the same problem as ur band member I have a constant ring in my ear from drumming tho it is annoying b cause when I play I have to have custom moulded and then ear protectors on
Not to tell you to do stuff but I would recommend you playing moon baby by godsmack....I drum to that song all the time and I think you drumming to that would be even better haha thanks man....
I've got some SE215s, and they are great. But, there is a LOT of handling noise, whenever i move my head (and even a lot of 'ear noise' when my head is totally still), to the point where I have to have it uncomfortably loud to properly hear music over the sound of the wire moving around on my head. I want to get vic firth's isolation headphones to wear on top of them, because drum spill is also an issue for me, but I don't know if that's going to help or if they will just make my 215s rustle around more and make everything louder. Any ideas?
Hi, I am a drummer and I use custom molded in ears by Tunz (Starkey) and I put on top the Vic Firth isolation headphones. It's a good idea to isolate as much as possible from the outer noise... but I put inside the Vic Firth's heavy isolation membrane + HD Foam. The Vic Firth's isolation headphones are not isolating too much out of the box. Hope it helps.
V-moda m100 crossfade are good, noise cancelling, army grade body with customizable shields, they make good in ear defenders that cut out high frequency and there only £15 on amazon
Tudur Jones I thought about getting a pair of V-Moda's. I like Beats, though. I'm not an expert audiophile or anything, but I think my Studios sound fine. I'm thinking about getting the Pros. You can find them on eBay, brand new or refurbished, for $170 - $180 rather than $400. Then again, maybe I'll try V-Moda...either the LPs or LP2s...I don't know.
None just yet but I help the company out in the UK at bpm in Birmingham, they were voted the best dj headphones of the year and this has been running for 3 year beating beats
See the thing is I can't afford the good ones maybe the most expensive i could buy is 20 dollards but i bought the 20dollars one and they messed up the first day :(
They're okay, but your best bet is just to buy a cheap pair of construction earphones (the over-ears) and wear them on top of the Shures. You shouldn't have any issues then.
I'm 10 and I drum I started when I was 7 I love it!!
Darcy Warden now your 13
No one cares u not
15 now
now youre fifteen
We are now the same age

Same here! Still great in ears 7 years later!

Spot ON. I have Beyerdynamics DT-770 and they are one of the BEST.
Cheers.
Hey man, just a question. Are the dt 770 pro headphones good for live performances (for drummers) ????? 🙌🏽✌🏽
I would still wear cans over those 1964's... isolation around the ears is key to pure enjoyment of hearing your instrument like never before!
Protect your hearing !! Thanks for the review of headphones/in-ear monitors
i am an audiophilers, best IEM for drummer is Fitear MH335DW, and for headphones is DT770
Can you suggest what are the best in ear defenders? I'm a drummer in a band and I need something not too pricey to protect my ears! Keep up the work casey!
Appreciate all the tips, man. Another great video!

Daniel Dossey did you ever find headphones with more isolation than the Beyerdynamics? I’m searching as well
Could you do a review of the whole drum lite package
I would also suggest getting the ACS custom pro17's and then put some sort of studio headphone over them
How do you record your drum cover?
Thanks coop
Would you recommend using active noise cancelling headphones for drumming?
