We may cautiously accept the idea of karma only if we are understand it as psychic heredity in the very widest sense of the word. Psychic heredity does exist that is to say, there is inheritance of psychic characteristics such as predisposition to disease, traits of character, special gifts, and so forth. It does no violence to the psychic nature of these complex facts if natural science reduces them to what appear to be physical aspects (nuclear structures in cells, and so on). They are essential phenomena of life which express themselves, in the main, psychically, just as there are other inherited characteristics which express themselves, in the main, physiologically, on the physical level. Among these inherited psychic factors there is a special class which is not confined either to family or to race. These are the universal dispositions of the mind, and they are to be understood as analogous to Plato's forms (eidola), in accordance with which the mind organizes its contents. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, directed by Kim Ki-duk. A 2003 South Korean film about a Buddhist monastery that floats on a lake in a pristine forest. The story is about the life of a Buddhist monk as he passes through the seasons of his life, from childhood to old age.
The traditional song used near the end of the film, while the adult monk is climbing the mountain, is called "Jeongseon Arirang", sung by Kim Young-im.

saw this film almost 20 years ago, it has stayed with me ever since - a masterpiece
This is undoubtedly one of the most wonderful scenes of cinema ever!
I lived 20 years in Korea from 2000 to 2020 and saw many beautiful mountains and temples and people there. Every time I hear this song I am taken back to that magical place and time. This is the true heritage of the Korean People, sadly now they have K-pop, imported crap music and dance

RIP Kim Ki-duk, you left us with a beautiful legacy.
Kim Ki-Duk's climbing of the mountain with life's burden is on par with Albert Camus' Sisyphus climbing a mountain with his own life's burden. While Camus might say it's all meaningless other than the meaning each individual chooses, Kim's parable seems to bring sharply to focus on life's mission.
Wonderful observation.
And yes, Kim's focus is, " To watch sunrise and sunset without any worries " , this covers everything.
this has nothing to do with occidental philosophy is more about carrying the buddhadharma even when someone has clearly misunderstood buddhas words you regret and carry the buddhas path in a more mature way, its like purifying the karma the young monk made when he was a kid when he was a teen he is purifying that to become a serious monk

I'm also watching it for second time after almost 10 years. In this 10 years many many different things happened in my life. Watching this movie again brings the memories back and reminds me how life continues to teach us lessons that we were taught in early childhood but we get the free lessens again and again in different forms and different stages to reach our final goal.
This is one of my favorite movies. I watched it many times. Sometimes have crude scenes and topics but they are part of life. I liked the video and subscribed to the channel.
