Sketch a Staircase

- Staircases can be frustrating and time consuming to use in Sketch in Xactimate if you don't know which staircase tool is the easiest to use. There are several "pre-built" staircases along with the "custom" staircase tool....which one is the best for everyday use?
This is exactly what I cover in this video - which tool is the easiest, least frustrating option for creating stairs, as well as which measurements are the most important when you're out in the field scoping the building.

Open means that there is not a riser or you can see through the stairs like in basement stairs. Open means you can see through them.
Thanks Chuck!! I appreciate you filling me in on that :)
Your a natural teacher-Thank you
I appreciate that! Glad my videos are helpful.
I didnt know you could rotate the stairs!!! I've always rotated my sketch! Such a great help. Thanks!
You're welcome!
This was a great way to do the staircase on the platform of the software
Is there a way to build a staircase in the middle of a room? I tried doing a custom staircase but I couldn't get it to stick.
The staircase I tried to draw was in the middle of a basement and it had walls from floor to ceiling around 3 sides
How do you make a staircase with an angled wall? Been trying but having difficulty.
I haven't searched all of your videos yet, but how do you include a staircase that has walls from riser to ceiling but no wall below, like a free floating staircase? Like in a basement
How do you put together a curved staircase that shares a wall with more than one room on the curved area? I failed my mastery exam because I couldn't get that sketch part right.
How do I get my stairs to come to the next level of my sketch, maybe I'm missing something?
When you accidentally turned the staircase one too many times around 6:24 how did you go backwards? I never knew about that tab tool to move the staircase! I always would put it down and then rotate the whole staircase. I have been self taught xactimate for years and REALLY appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work.
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying my vids Tomato! You can use shift+tab to rotate the tool you have attached to your cursor the other direction. Works with many tools in XM8!
How do you create a spiral staircase?
How can I deal with stairs in a split level? I can get the balustrade at the missing living room wall, but not get the stair wall to stop at the living room floor.
Your stairs total rise would need to equal the elevation of the second floor. Traditionally in Xactimate the second floor elevation is 109ft. So the total rise of the two staircases, and the landing, need to equal that.
Lovely thanks
You are so welcome!
Alena my challenge with stairs is with the walls. When you place stairs between existing walls, you get double walls. I tried to remove the stairway walls but then I have holes in my sketch where parts of walls should exist. This has been a nightmare for me. Was hoping I could get an understanding from you in the next video you create. Thanks
Hey Marshawn. So the things with stairs is that they are a room package. Xactimate sees the stairs as its own room. But you can hover your mouse over the walls on the room next door and you should be able to connect the stair wall. Hope that helps!
@@EstimateMastery Can you explain how you might separate stairs into two rooms but connect at any given riser? I've got a stair that is missing above stairs about half way up; Ive been trying to frankenstein my way through it but it looks goofy with the higher sections floor height starting at the stair height of the lower section
how in the world did you delete that staircase? I've had to start over 3x! lol
Since the staircase was highlighted sh probably hit delete on keyboard
Chuck is right. An open stringer has no riser back piece ( you can see through) while a closed stringer has a riser back piece and you can not see through the staircase.
Is there a way to change the direction of a sloped ceiling on a staircase? In other words, if I'm standing on the staircase walking up, the ceiling low wall is on my left and high wall is on the right.
You should be able to use the Orientation tool on the Sketch toolbar to change the direction of the stairs. Does that help?
@@EstimateMastery I tried that first. Actually called their own help desk and they guy called me back 3hrs later and said it's a program limitation and XM8 was intended for "most" layouts...oh well. Thanks!
Open is where there is not a riser board and you can see between the stairs.
Yes! That is correct!
Open Staircase has no risers like a spiral.
OH! I got it - thanks for clarifying as no one has ever explained what it meant :)
To say you know a lot more about Xactimate that I do would be an understatement. I feel like I just wasted 15 minutes, however, because there were several items you're not familiar with in XM8-1. No loss for you, of course, but it affords people (or maybe just me) to look for other UA-cam channels. Just my .02 cents.
Thanks for letting me know that there are some items I'm not covering for you in my vids regarding X1. If you'd help me out by letting me know where I'm deficient, I'd be forever grateful!
It was a great video, I'm currently learning xactimate and I just dont see the point in this comment.
Dont watch if it's a waste of time. I don't know, let me not be a keyboard warrior over a comment from 7 months ago.
How about starting your own smarty pants instead of ranting on Alena. She says she doesn’t know everything ( which is better then those to prideful to say). Sooo Charlie. What is your channel????
What a jumbo dummy
