  • If you want to experience the quintessential taste of Bengal, then a Bengali Fish Curry is probably a good place to start! Fish Bhuna or any style of Fish Curry is what defines Bengali Food from other parts of the subcontinent.
    It is no secret that every Bengali household has their own style of cooking fish, and no two fish recipes are the same.
    For this fish recipe we are using Sea Bass which is known in Bengali as Bhetki Fish or Bhetki Maas.
    Follow along to learn how to cook this Sea Bass Recipe to perfection. We start by marinating the sea bass fillets in a simple mix of turmeric and salt and then fry them to get a beautiful crust.
    We then cook fry garlic, onions, tomatoes, mustard seeds and various other spices to create a tasty bhuna style sauce. To complete this Sea Bass Curry, we add the fillets into the sauce. Simmer for a while, and that is it! You have a traditional tasty Bengali Fried Fish Curry. Serve it with white rice just like a Bengali!
    The reason the dish is called Bhuna is because this is the method of cooking the sauce. A bhuna sauce is made by frying the sauce over a low heat and then adding water and repeating the process to create what is known as a bhuna sauce. Some people will make a drier Bhuna while others may like the sauce to be thick but ‘saucier’.

    INGREDIENTS
    To Marinate
    400 gms Sea Bass Fillets
    1-2 tsp Turmeric
    ½ -1 tsp Salt
    For The Main Recipe
    50 ml Rapeseed or Mustard Oil
    1 tsp Mustard Seeds
    15 gms Sliced Garlic
    200 gms Sliced Onion
    100 gms Diced Tomatoes
    ½ tsp Salt
    ½ tsp Turmeric
    1.5 tsp Ground Coriander (Dhania Powder)
    1 tsp Ground Cumin (Jeera Powder)
    1 tsp Kashmiri Chilli Powder
    5-6 Green Chilli
    10-15 gms Chopped Coriander
