- Takashi Murakami is unquestionably the most famous artist in the world of Japanese contemporary art. He owes much of his success to hard work and a lack of sleep. “If I relax for more than six hours, I feel like I’m being extremely lazy and I have to get back to work. I can’t really relax,” he told us. The relentless output of new works, sculptures, and exhibitions crafted by himself and his global team of 300 Kaikai Kiki Gallery assistants is driven by one simple dread: “I fear that people will get bored of me,” he said.
We shadowed Murakami for three consecutive days prior to his massive “HEADS⟷HEADS” exhibition at New York City’s Galerie Perrotin. From observing the unreal synchronization of workers at his L.I.C. studio to encountering crazed fans at his meet-and-greet for the Uniqlo UT Doraemon collaboration, we offer viewers a rare look at the artist responsible for the limelight.

Ppl who just know him for his flower pieces try exploring his other large scale pieces. The detailing and intricacy of some of his massive pieces are incredible. His art is unprecedented in modern art in regards to vibrancy.

I can really just agree, I always thought he‘s just kind of a cartoon artist until I saw his big show in the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris last year. It was really mind opening. He is maybe not comparable on the level of hyper-intellectuality like the most other big artist but he’s doing his thing with more twists than you would expect on the first sight
@@moritzsimon6613 i can see how one might consider his work cartoonish but the best artists are working on invoking emotional interaction rather than over done "intellectual" content. That sort of thing is for the rich elitists showing off their collection while sipping champagne and snorting cocaine. most of them care more about provenance than anything else. Most people outside of japan only know murakami because of louis vuitton. He deserves better recognition than that.

I went and saw his exhibit in Vancouver, and let me tell you, He is a genius of his craft. There is soo much more to him than just the flowers. His statues are immeasurably impressive and the excruciating detail and abstract order he puts into every piece sticks with me to this day.

I was just looking at videos related to art and I stumbled upon this video it’s so lively and it has this sort of pressure behind it. I love it! That’s how I know I’m choosing my right path. Do what you love, not because of the outcome of it, but because of the experience and events you might come across. I’ve been in love with art since I was 6 and after 10 years I don’t plan to stop.

Having ur art appreciated by the world would be a dream, but also a nightmare.
The idea of assistants doing the "heavy lifting" bothers me to no end! - I so endorse the sign David Hockney put next to his work when displaying near Damien Hirst: "All the works here were made by the artist himself, personally." Now we know that Murakami is a Japanese version of Hirst and Koons.
Not sure if I agree with this, you wouldn’t discount Tarantino if he didn’t set up all the lights, sound, and operated camera for Pulp Fiction on top of directing the talent would you?

I got to photograph him for a Japanese editorial and got some great shots. He was there working all night. Been a fan since his super flat show at the Pacific Design Center. His pieces were selling for a one million at the time. For a living artist that was a big deal.

I used to think Murakami is just another businessman that fakes to be an artist, but this video changed my view. It’s like a statement that reveals his real artist pursuit or something like that.
