MADSAKI Thinks "Perfect Art" Is Boring and Talks Relationship With Murakami

  • Just before the launch of his solo show with Galerie Perrotin in Paris, we caught up with MADSAKI at his Tokyo studio to get an exclusive look at his new works for "French Fries With Mayo." With his latest exhibition, the artist is once again displaying his signature defiant use of the paint medium to poke fun at the fine-art masters of Europe. Along with some original works, notable newly created haphazard artistic recreations draw from the recognizable works of Eugène Delacroix, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Édouard Manet and more.
    In our candid studio visit, MADSAKI points to how his nomadic childhood informed his view of art and how visits to museums of the world sparked his desire to reimagine "perfect art." The artist also talks about how moving to New Jersey at the age of six from Japan forced him to face his cultural identity in relation to his foreign surroundings. MADSAKI then offered some rare insight on how Instagram facilitated his chance meeting Takashi Murakami at a time where the art world just wasn't noticing him. Finishing off our studio visit, MADSAKI recalled his time at Parsons School of Art and Design laughing about how he has gained notoriety for the same visual style that he received flak for at the prestigious school.

      Family just looks out for the money income. But not your happiness. I’m planning on getting a bachelors degree on fine arts and make a name for myself ( I don’t plan on cutting ties with my family ) I just plan on doing my own thing. I’m sure it’ll all go well. I’ve been drawing since I was 6 or 7 I don’t remember so I’ve got at least a good 10 years of practice under my belt.

      Christian William in the past 6 months a lot has changed and I’ll still be making art but I’ll also be skipping art school and go straight to college for graphic design. Hopefully I land a job the doesn’t hurt my artistic lifestyle. I’m nothing fancy but I do find drawing really fun. Thanks for reminding me of where I was 6 months ago.

      Good natured? He's not so pure. He is selling horseshit for high price, because some critics gave him a green light. Ideas are as systemic and institutionalized as in the Impressionist's day. Critics and galleries are the gate keepers to discussions of idea. They tell rich people what to buy and build collections to increase their value. This clown is playing the game and using race politics as a subject. The person who made the video is marketing an idea too. We are living in a post Warhol dystopian nightmare of materialism, that is a total falsehood. This is beyond art. It is disgusting.
      So no, the man is no lamb. He is liar and a player.

      Critics of art are normally failed artist who are very bitter. I've seen worst art to that of Madsaki that got sold for millions. Madsaki art is no worst than Georges Braque. ..Basquiat..Leger.. Twombly..Picasso..Francis Bacon..Jasper Johns. @ #DavidHenson

    I like the way you say New Jersey classic also I've been debating with the definition of art is and people that are critics I'm not sure they know artist know but maybe the critics don't. I never thought I art was about painting what everybody else always wanted you to do, I always thought it was your interpretation of something you create.

    If you dropped out of art school because they didn’t let you express yourself then you totally didn’t get art school not the other way around. Art schools teach you the basics and the rules. You don’t go to Driving School or Cooking School to start stunt driving or cooking using a blow torch for a beginner. You learn the rules and then when you get them down, that’s when you start breaking them because you know what works.

      Richard Hannay what he’s doing does work. Those analogies don’t work for a subject like art that is completely subjective. He’s amazing all by himself.

    • @KP-ul2ep
      @KP-ul2ep 4 роки тому +12

      that an interesting way to see it. But yet, many artists like this guy then to just go straight to exploring their own style without learning the basics, and with art, it works because of how subjective it is.

    Historically speaking, art is indeed needed technical aesthetic. In modern times art is more about expressing ourselves. If an art teacher only based art through what they think is technically correct and should be, then they are not artist..... they are just paid teacher.
