Inside the Violent Mind of Otaku Artist MR.

  • Опубліковано 13 вер 2018
  • Takashi Murakami collaborator, MR. is well-regarded for his illustrative, anime-inspired paintings and cartoonish sculptures. However, the Saitama-based creative resents the cutesy label often slapped upon his work. “From when I was around 13, my family had a rough time,” he admits. “Like with my older brother’s domestic violence.” The effect this turbulent upbringing had on MR.’s work is striking, considering the saccharine sweet designs that he often subverts with aggressive paint splashes and brush slashes.
    As a teenager, he was obsessed with manga, video games & anime and was subsequently tagged as an “otaku,” a subset of Japanese culture primarily made up of young males who forfeit social skills for personal pastimes. “When I was a teenager, I thought ‘otaku’ was something embarrassing,” says MR. “I was embarrassed … that I was an otaku.” Eventually, however, “I started thinking that embarrassment could be a weapon … it is interesting to let that embarrassment [explode].” We head inside the artist’s humble studio to witness that explosion as MR. fabricates his signature cartoon-indebted creations by means of paint and pencil.

      @Verti Gho That's not my point. My point is that instead of portraying him as an artist who grew up with a violent childhood and coped via doing art, they make it seem like he's an artist with a "violent mind", as if he's gonna go on some kinda murderous streak or something. It's incredibly lame.

      I think by "Violent" they mean something more akin to "Aggressive". MR's illustrations are full of "aggressive paint splashes and brush slashes" that, I guess, he does not intend to put in but does anyway out of 'Trauma'.
      It's like when you get mad and just want to punch things except it's subconscious for him and is reflected in his art.

    I don't see where the "violence" is, Hypebeast. He seems like a genuinely sweet guy who has gone through some very difficult things in life and uses art as a way to express what's going on inside. Perhaps you should change the title of the video? not very respectful to refer to someone like MR as having a "violent" mind when that simply isn't the case. He went through trauma, and his art is a way of venting. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING about that is "violent", not even the content of his art could be described as such.

    • @george_yassington
      @george_yassington 5 років тому +1

      They're referring to his brush strokes as in the random splotches of paint and such that he puts on his work and his horror work that he also does. When you have aggressive brushwork it is often referred to as violent.

Granted, the internet is full of clickbait titles, but that doesnt mean it cant be called out, especially in the context of video about man who creates artwork to, at least in some way, cope with what has happened in his life. and the title specifically says "the violent MIND", not "artwork" or "brushwork", so, although you make a good point, it isnt likely that's what they were going for.

By violent they didn't mean him as a violent person but he does have a violent past and the way he colors the background is by "violently" splashing colors. In the description they descrived his art as like "saccharine sweet" (whatever that means) to me his art is... it sure is cute but it has some darker tinge to it. Like someone that's smiling on the outside but dark on the inside... that's the vibe his art gives me. I still do think that the editing on this video is just weird though.

    Soo... Am I to conclude that we'd be more creative if we had trauma in our childhoods...? ...and that it's... bad? Wait, whut? I'm confused. o.O
    I don't know if thumbing up is pro childhood trauma or thumbing down is against creativity...? But you don't have an auto-created "thumbs down" video list, so I thumbs up the video. 👍

    The title is very misleading. I feel bad for him; He seems like a genuently nice person that just wants to express his feelings by drawing but he gets misinterpreted.

    this man seems genuinely interesting and nice, but the editing makes it seem a bit too, well, psychopathic-ly like, if you can understand what im saying
    what im trying to say is that he sounds like a killer when we all know its just the editing

    Read the description, the editors knew what they were doing and did not literally mean that Takashi's mind is violent. The title is not meant to convey violence in that literal sense. The video isn't even edited to convey him negatively.

    Sooooooo what about him being violent? There’s no violence at all, just art.
